Came here late at night for an emergency fix for a bad haircut because it was the only place still open. Place passed the vibe check with flying colors- there was a dog and the place was cozy and had relaxing music playing. All the staff were super chill and friendly. 10/1/2022 - Paid $45 to get the worst freaking haircut of my life. Asked GIO for a flattop fade and he cut the top so short there was an actual bald spot right in the middle. I asked him to try to even it out and he basically said he gave me the cut I asked for. I pretty much have to go somewhere else and pay to get it even now. Fresh cuts. Hip hop. Fitted caps. I don't know what else one needs in life, and you can get all of them at Frank's. The haircuts are a tad bit on the pricey side but the price is worth it. These stylists take their craft seriously and it shows. I get a very simple fade buzzcut, but my guy B still takes the time to use a combination of high quality products, clippers, scissors, and a sharp razor. The staff is very nice and there is always excellent hip hop blaring through the speakers. Also, this place is known for their designs cut into their hair. I recently let B freestyle, and couldn't be happier with the old school 90s-esque result. This place requires a reservation, so give them a call and get a fresh cut. read more

Came here on a Thursday morning for a quick haircut. I had sort of an idea of what I wanted but wanted advice. Mr. Bee helped me figure out what I wanted, and knew exactly what I was looking for. He has super attention to detail and gave me the best haircut I've had since moving to nyc. It wasn't that the haircut was complicated, it was his service what made this experience great. Super engaging and personable. The decor was awesome and all the barbers seemed really chill. The haircut is a little pricey at $47, not including tip, but I'm willing to splurge for good service as I don't get haircuts as frequently. I'd rather have a barbershop that listens to what I want and has a fun environment if I have to wait rather than pay less for a haircut in which I am misunderstood. Highly recommend. I told him specifically what is wanted but he tried to give me the trendy hairstyle where one side has more hair and then you do a combover. The quality of the haircuts here is very high. It was my first time and I was able to call in and book an appointment for an hour later. I only decided on this place because my regular place was closed on Saturday. My barber was Yuke and first I must say he has tremendous attention to detail. Really great with his hands and makes sure everything looks perfect. However, although partly my fault for not asking beforehand, I found out at the end that the cost of a scissor haircut is $40. But I also didn't see the prices clearly listed anywhere. Personally I can't justify paying this much for a simple cut. Last time I paid this much for a haircut, I got a glass of whisky with it! My last cut was at a place nearby for half the cost, and I was still very happy with the final product. I can recommend this place for the customer service and attention to detail, but I'd look elsewhere if you want a simple haircut that doesn't cost as much. read more

I received, hands down, the worst hair cut of my life from Frank's today. After the barber botched my hair and I asked him to fix it he freaked and told me he was going to have to charge me double the price since he was, "giving me two haircuts". When I went to pay, the barber actually tried to charge me 40 instead of the 30 dollar haircut I asked for. What I got was shit, whats worse is he tried to take me for a sucker. Worst haircut I've ever had - this is including haircuts I've given myself, mind you. If you insist on going here, avoid Ivan (see Johnny R's review below, same story). Truly unbelievable. I have very short, very straight hair, and I went to a barber shop for a trim: not exactly rocket science. But the haircut is so bad, so totally unsalvageable, it almost looks "on-purpose" bad. Been to this place roughly 6 times... Chop Shop has potential to be a great barber shop, but the employees do not make you feel welcome. The barbers take a break after every customer, which being in the hair industry for a minute myself, I found unnecessary. Prices are another issue, they charge anywhere from $45-60 for a haircut. Its plainly too much for the service and the barber is in charge of how much they want to charge, which can vary depending upon the day. Believe me and the other reviewers when we say they are real "aholes" when it comes to pricing. And the haircuts are not all that, I always have to clean up the cut for my husband because the barber is too lazy to cross check the work. The one positive is that they have one guy who is willing to do designs with the buzzer, but the designs are up to his discretion. I wanted a slight trim when I came to Frank's so that I could keep growing my hair out and give it some cleaner texture for the meantime. My hair is medium length, straight and pretty simple. I comb it with my hand to the side or straight back and throw a little gel on sometimes. So when I sat down, one of the barbers with a short buzz cut and a thick beard greeted me. I told him that I wanted a light trim to let my hair follicles grow out more and thin it on the sides to give my hair a cleaner look. Okay, he said, and then began to cut my hair. He started by chopping at the hair on the sides of my head as if he were cutting weeds. Why I didn't stop him in the process, I don't know, I thought there may be a method to this carefree style but there wasn't. He missed multiple spots. There was a patch at the bottom right of my neckline that stuck out severely from the rest of my hair. (I didn't notice this until I got him afterward and my roommate validated my concern). So I went back the same day and asked him to fix that spot. He responded, That's why I asked you if everything was okay at the end. Really, I thought and then responded, it's messed up can you fix it. And he did very reluctantly. My point here is that he rushed my haircut and did a poor job in the process. It's okay to crack a couple jokes with your customer (me or whoever) and act cool, but if you're going to act pretentious about having made a mistake and act like it was no big deal, then you shouldn't be cutting hair in New York City. There are too many other professional barbershops to go to, and even Supercuts does a much better scissor haircut in comparison for a way better value. To boot, the barber who cut my hair missed a few other spots elsewhere. My haircut is uneven on the sides. In fact, the sides of my scalp are soar from having the hair yanked out while being chopped out with thinning scissors, with no discretion at all. Keep in mind, my review is based on just one haircut. Only one experience, but it was a bad one. My hair will grow out again and when I get my haircut in the future it won't be at Frank's, that's for sure. read more

So I went here for like a year and within that time period I've setup an appointment at least 5 times there's someone else there to cut my hair. Either "he doesn't cut on those days anymore" or "this guy is filling in for him"--no lie, five different barbers along with the one I always try and make an appointment with. I even tried following one of the other barbers who cut my hair, "he was fired." Started up with a new dude, "they let him go too." Tried to see this other guy, "he's taking some time off but he'll be back." No one ever gave me a call to tell me my main barber was out, even though there's always a teenager hanging out at the register listening to music, or outside talking. Like setup an appointment with THAT barber, he's my guy, not some dude who you think will do a good job. I wasn't even mad at it for a while because the guys did a good enough job, until the last guy who said two words to me, "I'm ____" and then just jacked my hair up for $30. I just can't go back here. The place doesn't have a pulse. It almost seems like barbers aren't even aware that there are other barbers in the room. read more

You know after 8 years of coming here I had stop. They never return calls when you try to make an appointment so leaving a message is pointless. It's disheartening to think from one appointment to the next they never know who you are because they never keep any information, so everytime it's just: whats your name? What's your number? What barber do you want? After leaving two messages and never getting called back, despite the fact that the answering machines says: "we'll get back to you shortly" when I finally reached the non responsive zombie girl who answers the phone she was all put out by the fact that I was annoyed and angered at being ignored. And of course there were no appointments for the next 4 days. Obviously they can ignore their customers because they have plenty and from this experience it's clear they just don't care. If however you're cool with that and can just do a walk in and score an appointment it works. I've always loved this place. It has a great vibe and is very chill. Hiro is one of the best barbers in town, I'm sad I won't see him again. The other guys who have cut my hair over the years have ranged from OK to really good. I just can't help feel if they bothered to return calls maybe I would have been able to get an appointment. It's not like the LES is lacking in places to get a hair cut. read more

Me, I just wish you were more consistent. I went to Frank's for about a year back in the day. I had cuts from Mr. Bee, Chris, and Ivan. I was charged anywhere from $25-$40 without any particular pattern. I've had some decent hair cuts, and some of the worst in my life (my fault for giving the barber carte blanche and falling asleep in the chair; I deserved to wake up with a mohawk). End of the day, I think of Frank's Chop Shop like a box of chocolates, then decide that I need to know what I'm going to get and go elsewhere. read more

2 years ago the person who had been cutting my hair forever left the business. I panicked like anyone else who needs to find a new barber. Lucky for me the first place I tried provided me with not 1 but the 2 best barbers I've ever had. The haircut is a little pricey for a men's cut coming in at $40 but there is almost no amount of money I would not pay for the piece of mind of sitting down in a barbers chair and leaving looking fresh to death without having to say a word as far as what I want in a haircut goes I've been getting cuts from Yuke and Moj for 2 years now and I've never left unsatisfied. This place has a great relaxed vibe, music playing, the ability to sip on a drink while your in the chair etc without feeling disorganized. It's been pretty much the same core group of bartenders for as long as I've been coming here and they all work together to keep the shop running smooth. This place is the tits. Before going in for my haircut I had walked by this place numerous times. From the window looking in you can tell it's got a cool vibe to it. It was finally time for a haircut and I wanted to check this place out. Normally I've got a place in boston that I go to, for the past two years it was the only spot I'd go to, but with not having the time to go visit, I set my sights on Frank's. I will admit I was a bit nervous at first about the whole barber shop aspect of it. I think it's due to my childhood nightmares in barber shops where I got some of the worst hair cuts known to man, Not the case here, the people here know what they are doing. I hadn't had a hair cut in several months and Miles tackled it like a champ. Getting a good hair cut is all about establishing a relationship with the person who's cutting it. People who come in and just say "i want it short" aren't helping themselves out or the person cutting their hair. I brought in a picture of the way my hair was cut once to show the style, length and Miles did it up better then the picture. Everyone here is super friendly and nice, they also have mean skills with scissors. Miles spent a mad amount of time cutting my hair and it was only 38 bucks. The basic hair cuts start at 28. If you're looking for a shave or a fresh trim you gotta stop by this place. read more

Really interesting joint: kinda hip hop, kinda rockabilly. They publish their own literary magazine, sell their own line of caps and sell a Bialetti espresso maker with their logo on it. The vibe is "enlightened macho". I go here for a shave and to have my sideburns shaped into crazy points. Both guys who have done this for me have been artists! Since legal issues keep them from using a proper straight razor they have a fake straight razor that accepts disposable single edge blades. Not quite a classic shave, but a great one nonetheless. The hot towel is a nice touch. For $15 I call that a deal. Recommend it to any dude. They describe themselves as catering to the "modern gentleman of leisure". It's by appointment only. Worth the trip. It's a relatively inexpensive indulgence that leaves you looking great. read more

This place is amazing! It has a cool, but with no new age LES fakeness. This is the real deal. Being a female I rarely go into Barber shops, but when I mentioned to a friend that I wanted to get some professionalism parts done in my new short do he recommended "Mr B" immediately. As soon as I met Mr B I knew he was a true hair artist, I felt 100% confident in letting him free style and was more than happy with what he came up with. I observed another Barber across from me who was doing what looked like a cut n shave on a guy in the chair next to mine. Although his didn't look as sick as mine, it was obviously a good cut. I would recommend franks chop shop to both the ladies and the gents. Mr B is the top dog in my book and I can't wait to see what he does on my next visit. read more

The problem with most barber shops is that they don't listen to what you want, give you a rushed hair cut, brush off their chair and sit the next person down. One of the many reason I like Franks is because they are by appointment only so they have enough time to make sure you are happy and look good. Chris is the barber I go to and I definitely recommend him but the other guys are great too other wise they wouldn't be working there. Make sure to get there early so you can try on some limited edition hats, it's really hard not to. read more

I got a same-day appointment. I had a nice conversation with the guy cutting my hair and he paid full attention the whole time. I won't name him because this isn't personal, and because I believe that an untalented barber is less at fault than the manager, whose job it is to hire only skilled barbers. I paid $40 for a bad haircut. I knew it was mediocre after I left; two weeks later, it has grown out badly. I always have bedhead with this haircut. $40 is a lot to pay for a guy's haircut in general, but I really feel like a sucker paying that much for the worst haircut I've gotten in ten years. read more

This place really does not need another amazing review but I cant hold back right now. Franks is amazing! After cutting my own hair for about 4 months I decided it need a professionals touch. Franks has a comfortable decore and the old school barber chair are extremely comfortable. What you ask for is what you get. They want you to be as specific as possible when you go in. If you dont ask for something your not going to get it, but if you do ask they will be happy to do it. Bottom line there is a price to pay for quality but that is what you are getting here. P.S. On a recommendation of a friend who recently raved about his haircut he got here, I made an appointment and had my haircut today. I wanted to try something new. Finding it was pretty easy - the place is pretty small with room three old-fashioned, barber chairs; I can understand why it's appointment only. The space is somewhat modern, well lit. My barber was Georgie - he was attentive, had great feedback, and with care and skill, gave me a pretty awesome chop. He worked mainly with scissors and a razor. At the end, he gave me a really nice "neck shave" -- hot towel and shave cream. However, what was surprising was that they didn't have a hair washing station, and I didn't get my hair washed (is that normal for a barber shop?). What was also surprising was that my hair cut came out to $38; I didn't realize what I had was more than just the basic cut. Be wary; there's also no price list. Even so, I'll probably go back when I want to treat myself to a new do. read more

After years of having my friend tell me I must start going to Frank's and me resisting, I finally relented after my old barber shop closed down. Well, I must say that I'm glad that I finally gave it a try. The place itself is cool inside, playing good music and looking good. The barber (I had Mr. B) did a great job and I'm sure the others do too. The hot towel massage thing on the back of your head before the back neck shave was a nice addition. And lastly, and most importantly, the absurdly cute receptionist puts the cherry on top. She is incredible. All make it worth the price, which is a bit more than my old haircut ($28 for me, but it ranges depending on what you get done).
