There's something about an old-school neighborhood pizza place that makes you want to love it before the first slice even hits the table. Frank's Pizza in Middletown has that feeling--the comfortable booths, the familiar atmosphere, and the sense that, at one time, this place must have been absolutely buzzing. I ordered a whole spinach-and-garlic pizza along with a Capri salad, water, and a ginger ale. The spinach and garlic sounded like exactly the kind of simple combination that should shine, but the pie was noticeably oily. By the time I settled into a slice, the excess oil had become the thing I noticed most, overshadowing what could have been a much better pizza. The salad was a pleasant companion to the meal, and the service was fine. Our server was fairly friendly, though nothing about the experience felt especially polished or memorable. What Frank's does have is convenience and character. Being right in Middletown makes it an easy neighborhood option, and I genuinely loved sitting in the booth and taking in the throwback feel of the place. You can almost imagine the dining room in its heyday, filled with regulars and families coming in for their favorite pie. I wanted the food to live up to that atmosphere. With a little more attention to the quality and preparation--particularly a lighter hand with the oil--the experience could be considerably better. A good crust should have some backbone--crisp on the outside, a little chew inside. This one felt underbaked and soft, almost like it skipped the oven's final exam. Flavor-wise, it wasn't terrible, but texture matters, and this crust just couldn't carry its weight--literally. If you like your pizza more like a floppy flatbread, maybe this works. Pizza and Caesar salad were good. Caesar salad is definitely shareable by several people. Service was good. Very limited wine menu. I only gave 4 stars because the furnishings are slightly worn with cracked, "leather" seats at the booths. read more

Came on here for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised. Got the amazing salad with a really nice size proportion it was delicious. They have so many different varieties of pizzas as well as other items to eat. Reasonably priced so definitely check them out if you're in the area. read more

Mhew, not a fan of this shop. The decor and seating by far are better than the pizza they sell here. Pizza is so thin and big that you can barely hold it and keep it intact without it falling over into a hot mess in your hands. I'd rather they make normal slices that are a bit thicker and sturdier so you can actually hold it to eat and enjoy it or even fold it. The way they make the slices you can't fold or hold it without it falling apart or flopping over with hot cheese getting on your hands. Service is top notch and the decor are the only good qualities about this pizza joint but you come here for pizza not nice seating and smiling faces who are ready to serve you but serve you sloppy crappy pizza. Only reason I don't give this place 1 star is because I haven't tried any of their hot dishes but based on my pizza experience I'm skeptical that those dishes are any better. read more

Frank's has been great since the late 90s or so. It is some of the best pizza I've had over half a lifetime living in NY and NJ. They have such a variety of pizza as well as their infamous garlic knots. I recommend their buffalo chicken pizza, plain, and pepperoni pizzas. Any time I am in town (once a decade or so now), I have to stop in here. They used to prep pizzas for me to drive from NY to MI to be cooked there. read more

Hands down the worst meal I've ever been served at any restaurant Ever. I went in for lunch, ordered Baked Penne Bolognese, and my guest had a Sausage and Egg hero. I feel like I was served something that was days old and heated up in a microwave. The bolognese sauce was pizza sauce with tiny bits of ground meat and likely bad mushrooms, which would explain why I kept thinking I was eating mold. The sausage and egg hero was not much better. Dried, thin slices of pizza sausage and way over cooked eggs. We asked for the check and left most all of my meal and 1/2 the hero on the table. I've been nauseous since I left there. Ordered penne ala vodka and got a baked ziti. Got a taco pizza was suppose to have cheddar and has mozzarella. I'm a loyal customer and am extremely disappointed. Can't really review them, because we did not eat there. But what happened was we looked them up on yelp, found they were close by and looked pretty good. We drove there with my two granddaughters sat down at a table. A worker walked by but did not greet us. We sat for 10 minutes. Nobody came over so we finally got up to leave and I just yelled thank you bye, and all of a sudden a worker runs out and says what's the problem what's the problem and my wife said well nobody came over to us, and she said well you're supposed to come up to the counter. Will you see that's the problem they had no sign, indicating that we had to go to the counter, there were menus on the table, so for all we knew they were table service. But they had no other customers place look like it had, and served a meal in the week and we figured we didn't want to eat there so we left. read more

The Stromboli's can be pretty thick and sometimes are a little raw, but they are never a disappointment. The staff is super friendly and genuinely appreciate your business. I have never dined in, I have only done take out, but there a great pizza stop when I am in the area. Stopped here for lunch with my husband and daughter. Service was great. The waitresses were on top of it and friendly. Food came out pretty quickly. My husband got a wrap and thought it was pretty good. I ordered a Sicilian slice which came after the other items and I was told it was because they had just made a new pie and it would be out shortly. It wasn't that hot when it arrived though, kinda seemed like it had been reheated? Pizza was great, the chicken was good quality which is always a gamble with pizza places. But the garlic on the garlic knots taste off, like they used cheap jarred garlic. Very good pizza... But can be very pricey. Also make sure when you order an entire pie they are actually giving you a fresh pizza. I've seen them put an entire pizza in the oven minus 1 slice to heat up for customer,... Then they took one slice of plain, and doctored it up to match the remainder of the pie. Chicken Marsala slice was awesome. I was skeptical of the thick crust but it had a light dough with a crispy outside, almost like deep dish pizza. The garlic knots are unique. They are literally 50% garlic, 50% knot. They taste very good but you'll definitely want to brush your teeth before you talk to anyone after eating these. I felt they were just missing some Parmesan cheese. They bake the knots when you order them. Most of the place is waiter service. Only tried the plain cheese. It's ok, not great. Never thought I'd say this, but the pain slice has too much cheese. Which led to a soggy crust and bland sauce. The grandma slice looked amazing. Will try that next time. read more

DW and I used to go here weekly when it first opened. We'd eat the same thing every week... The Penne a la Vodka. The vodka sauce is home made with plenty of creme and the bits of prosciutto add something a little different. The Garlic bread that comes with the meal is also really good. I think this place changed ownership a while back and the first few times we went the service didn't seem to be as good. Soon after this we stopped our weekly visits. We now go back every once and a while and the Penne is still our dish of chioce. The prices are really reasonable as well. The service has been better the past few times we have gone but with so much variety in the area now we're always looking for something different. I have never had the sit-down order-from-a-menu food, I've only had their pizza and must say it is a great. They have soooo many different slices. Go in and grab a slice and some garlic knots. Those are the only 2 things I can vouch for that are good. They got cheese and pepperoni slices, BBQ and buffalo chicken slices, fajita slices, mushroom + sausage, tomato + pesto slices, macaroni, margherita, chicken bacon ranch, vodka sauce, grandma's slices, lasagna slice, taco salad, eggplant parm, spinach alfredo, stuffed slices, supreme, grilled chicken and broccoli, and many others.
