As mentioned in many of my other burger reviews, we've been trying all the places in the Akron beacon journal for best burger in Akron and I have to say, this one shocked me. I came into this place not expecting much given many of the other places on the list have been disappointing. This place was very good. The burger was well seasoned and they used fresh ingredients that added a nice crisp. The place itself is dark and definitely reminds you of a dive bar. To put in perspective, we've almost completed the tournament posted and this place will likely be in the top 3. Price was good. Burger was fantastic, and the crinkle cut fries had a nice crisp. While not the most inviting ambiance, the burger was great. Definitely worth a try read more

Frank's is my local. An eclectic dive bar with a cozy, homey vibe and friendly regulars. You might not guess it when you first walk in, but the food is terrific. Steak night on Fridays is not to be missed, but you'll get something good no matter when you go--burger night, wing night, or Taco Tuesday. Plus weekly and monthly chef specials that always delight. If the food is a key attraction to Frank's, their secret weapon is the staff. They're lovely people who will know your drink of choice and seem like old friends before long. I can't say enough good things about them. And if all that weren't enough, there's karaoke every Sunday night that has to be experienced to be believed. I can't say I've been anywhere else where a local parish priest belts out Frank Sinatra tunes... but that's just a Sunday night at Frank's Place on Market. read more

Franks is the typical hole in the wall and those of you that have read my reviews know I love these places. The service is good at Franks and the bartenders are friendly and can carry a conversation. Atmosphere is very eclectic - see my pictures. The food specials are a deal so make sure to check those out. I had the cowboy burger on this visit but have also had the NY strip which is good. The cowboy burger is sautéd onions, cheddar, bacon and candied jalapeños. Handmade burger and very tasty. Only complaint is the burger was thick but not wide enough to cover the bun. Stopped in on a Saturday late afternoon, this place was busy but felt cramped and dark. They were busy, but we were able to find a seat at the bar and waited over 15 mins, to order a drink, neither barmaid behind the bar acknowledged us. So we didn't stay. Don't get me wrong i like a good dive bar that has good food , and cheap drinks. Other places that are busy , acknowledge you and say " hi how you doing, be with you as soon as we can" and only takes about 5 to 10 mins before you get service. read more

Atmosphere: I actually love the inside of this little place. From the outside, it looks like a shack. Like nothing more then maybe a storage shed or an outhouse. But the inside is so charming and inviting. There's two Ohio lottery machines, which is great because we went just to catch the beginning of the browns game and have a couple appetizers while playing some keno. Food & Drinks: I had my usual (whiskey neat. Kinda hard to screw up). Kayla got a beer. She said it tasted funky though. Like it may have been skunked (for those of you who don't know, that's when your beer is refrigerated then comes to room temp and refrigerated again). Now we were only here to play a couple games of keno so we only got two appetizers this time. The big ass pretzel and the pickle chips. Kayla said the big ass pretzel was DELICIOUS and the chipotle aioli had a pretty potent kick but it didn't stop her from eating it all. The pickle chips (served with ranch) were also delicious. Server was pleasant enough and it is definitely somewhere where we will be coming back. Next thing on the menu we will be trying is the frankenfurter and the wings. Tips for restaurant. -Update your website, make the menu more easy to find and navigate. -On your wings menu, be specific that "Franks hot" is not the actual Franks Name-brand hot sauce but actually, your house made sauce. Simply changing the menu from "Franks hot" to "Franks house hot" would make all the difference because people who actually live hot wings steer WAY clear from that crap. -Get a crispy chicken sandwich on that menu, y'all. That's the only thing your perfect selection of pub food is missing! We will be back and I will update the review! read more

I have reviewed this place before and it remains one of my favorite hangouts in Akron. It has an eclectic crowd with sporadic juke box music, good selection of beer and just the most family feel (Somebody say Cheers?) of any bar. The small U shaped bar leads to instant connections and conversation. You cant be a stranger long at Franks. The food specials are much better and cheaper than you'd expect from a local gin joint like this. It always amazes me to see folks wearing Tux and gowns stop in for a nightcap or real fun after some fund raiser gala. have a laugh! read more

Just went for the first time and loved it! Very cool, chill, simple neighborhood bar with good food and even better service. Really awesome people! We went on Sunday night, wing night, although not much of a special at 90 cents each. Value, in general, isn't as great as most hole in the wall bars, but still pretty good. Average drink prices and food on par with average restaurant prices. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a cozy, low key, intimate kinda vibe. read more

The atmosphere of Franks Place was pretty cozy. Service didn't take long. And the food was absolutely amazing! The onion rings I ordered were hot and steamy. The fries, while crinkle cut, were crunchy and crisp which I've never experienced before, because usually crinkle cut fries are soft and mushy. And the burger was out of this world amazing. It was so juicy and savory. Everything about this place is just right. If you live on market you got to give this place a try. read more

First I had their burgers, which are good, but didn't blow my mind. However, their oven baked salmon is amazing. It's at high-end restaurant level, yet in a dive bar! My favorite type of bar is a dive to be clear. The salmon was still pink, absent of the markings of overcooked salmon: gray and chalking (that white goo oozing out of it, yuck). I love cooking salmon too, so I know what to look for. Properly cooked salmon is still pink since the flesh is naturally pink, which confuses many people, including cooks/chefs. This is why you either must use a meat thermometer or be so skilled you can just look at it and know. You also have to not be scared of seeing pink as salmon is very different than chicken and other meats. This is the best oven baked salmon I've ever had, period. That said, when I cook salmon, I prefer to sear it to have crunchy skin on the bottom. I understand many US Americans are weird about eating fish skin though. read more

I have been a regular at Franks for more years than I would like to admit. While I like to diversify my watering holes, I usually end up at Franks at the end of the night and at least once a week. Every time I go there I see someone I know but often times I end up meeting someone new. You never really know what you're going to get when you go there. The crowd is pretty unique on the weekends. Bartenders are GREAT and so very friendly and I count them among my friends. Drink prices are higher than average but your glass will never be empty. Food is good and Frank runs some excellent specials. Half-off burger nite on Thursday is highly recommended. They also book some pretty good music on the weekends and is really worth the stop if you have never been there. Great place to top off a Highland Square bar crawl. read more

We bought a Groupon to try this establishment out because we live in the neighborhood. We went around 6:30pm on a Saturday night and found four other tables occupied for dinner and the bar was a quarter full. This is actually a small cozy place with only about 10 - 12 tables for dining and a large half moon bar. Different t-shirts were pinned to the wall and that was interesting. Tonight, Halloween decorations were all over. Our server tended to us quickly, asking for our drink orders and telling us the specials for the night. He was efficient but not too warm or welcoming. Our food came out quickly. I had their chicken wings (a dozen wings for $8). I asked if I could split the flavors but the server said no :( The wings were tasty, coated in some teriyaki sauce but they did not "wow" me. I did not feel welcomed and felt a little uncomfortable here. I will probably not be coming back here soon. read more

I'm going to give Frank's only 4 stars even though I can drop the word "love" when I mention it, and I'll explain why. Frank's is the kind of bar I adore. A hole in the wall, friendly staff, locals and some cool decor. I've only eaten the food a few times, and I'm gonna have to say it was pretty typical for bar food; not good, not bad. The music trivia and karaoke is always a blast, and the patio is great for summer time. Now why am I giving Frank's only 4 stars? Because I really feel like the drinks can be expensive. The drafts are never anything I would consider on a craft level, and I don't like paying that much for PBR if/when I get it. I'm a relatively new fan of Frank's....having just been there a few times. Talk about a neighborhood bar/restaurant, this place is unique and filled with friendly peeps having a good time. The food is good, and I hear a new menu is rolling out in September. They have chef specials every Wednesday and other deals each day of the week. We like that they have an outdoor patio too. Love this place! Been a fan since moving to Akron in 2008. We didn't expect more than bar food the first time we were there - turned out they have an extensive menu with nightly specials. While on business from Columbus, I have now frequented this establishment two times, in the past week. I'll just say:... This is one of my favorite bars of all time. Really. From the atmosphere, to the frequency, to the vibe, to the amazingly friendly staff,- this place delivers on ALL FRONTS -however, I don't want to forget the food... This is not your ordinary bar food, by any means. My first experience at Frank's, I ordered a few cocktails and then the special of the day: salmon and lentils- to go. The food sat on the bar top for a good half hour before I left... I got back to the hotel, and finally ate about an hour later. What I experienced in room temperature food was nothing short of amazing. This was gourmet. I'm not kidding. So, I could go on, and on, and on... But I won't. Just get your butt there whenever you are in the area or, drive there from wherever and you will absolutely have an amazing experience. Promise. read more

She had a scowl on her face the whole time and when she didn't hear me correctly (said "I'd like one more beer, then close out"), she matter of factly said: "well, I didn't hear you." This is def the best bar in Akron. Hit this place two or three weekends in a row and you might become a regular. A true Cheers place if there ever was. I used to play softball for Frank's, he is the best bar owner ever! You cannot have a bad time here. No one hassles you, the drinks are affordable and the food is extremely great for a bar. It is small and intimate, when you are talking with your friends, you can hear them. They always have events going on and lots of fun characters frequent this bar. The parking lot is sketchy so make sure you never leave alone. read more

Wow, lived in Akron all my life and just now realized I had never reviewed this bar. My oversight. Frank's has found a "sweet spot" on the edge of Highland Square - a little nicer than the typical "dive bar" - but still very casual and comfortable, with incredible food. Frank always seems to be able to find a first-class chef; different ones may come and go, but the food standard is always high and the portions are plentiful. Draught beer selection could use expansion; still plenty of decent bottles on tap and drinks are well-made. Bar staff varies, but most are reasonably pleasant and efficient. Clientele is mostly regulars from around the neighborhood, or other Akron folks who have been coming here off-and-on for years. Always pleasant crowd, always fun - people after work, guys after a golf round, hipsters hiding out, couples, groups of friends - it's all good. There's a nice, private patio out back for smokers, or anyone who wants to get a little sun. Interesting and eclectic décor; plenty to look at and enough TVs to keep you occupied if your sitting at the bar. Excellent jukebox, and great weekly programming like Karaoke, etc. Frank is a great host who really cares about his customers. Though they advertise pretty regularly in the Beacon's Enjoy section, they could stand to update their website more often; it's pretty stale - and new customers do check sites out before visiting. Both times I've been to franks place, the service has been good and the drinks were well made. The problem I have with the bar is that the service staff isn't trustworthy. I came in with a friend, and we were both on the same check. I left early and paid the bill, and my friend was given the same bill not even an hour later. Had she not called me to fix the mix up, the bartender would have pocketed MY hard earned money (I'm a bartender) and my friends hard earned money. The first time this happened, I thought it was a mistake, but now that this has happened again, I won't be back. Dishonesty in the industry makes us all look bad. read more

It's a total dive and a small little hole in the wall, it has been around forever...since long before I was born and my father was dragging my mother out of there during their college days until now!
