Side salad was very good and entrees were ok. Flavor was good and portions were huge; pasta was very very al dente (which I normally like but this was really crunchy). Our first visit won't be our last. Food was really good just as we were told. Portions are large so it's easy to share if you can agree on one tasty item. Friendly efficient waitress. Old tavern with a quirky atmosphere in rural Lebanon (truly just outside the city). Very nice staff. Accommodating: I wanted all flats for my dozen wings, and I got them! Nice, crispy delicious wings (and I am very picky when it comes to wings). I also requested the Army-Navy game on TV and they put it on. My son enjoyed his meal. Let's start with the poor bartender. She was new but incredibly sweet. However due to either horrible ownership/management, she is forced to measure out a shot at a time to make a drink. This affects the customer bc she got so far behind and drinks would take much longer than usual to get or for customers to get refills. The customer service goes out the doors when crap like that is done. And it is NOT the bartenders fault as she stated that is the policy there. I have not seen a bartender have to measure out a shot in decades. So stop the non-sense already and put pouring caps on the bottles and let this poor girl do her job. If she's not a certified bartender or has no experience being a bar tender, then hire a real bartender. If she is a bar tender with experience stop hand cuffing her and let her do her job. Now onto the food. The bacon wrapped scallops were decent but you can't put them out with no dipping sauce. This is the first restaurant I ever been to that had bacon wrapped scallops without a dipping sauce. Most places use some type of honey mustard dip. The calamari, take it off the menu, completely bland and tasteless, clearly frozen and not even crispy. I got the "best in the county" crab cakes. That 's what it said on the menu. They were terrible!!! and not even close to being the best in Lebanon County. Super dry and fell apart and super bland. No seasoning whatsoever. The wife got the stuffed haddock, clearly frozen haddock so again, bland, tasteless and blah. The bake potatoes, broccoli, salad and house dressing that we got with the meal were very good but how can you mess that up. Overall I love the place, it's a cool environment, everyone is really nice, but the food quality is super lacking. And stop with the bs with measuring out a shot and take a hard look at the quality of food. And a piece of advice, customers don't want to see cooks in sweaty t-shirts walking from the kitchen to the cooler and then walking out of the cooler back to the kitchen with a piece of fish, sausage, and raw food in their hands while wearing no gloves. Pretty disgusting and the health standards are super lacking. read more

We used to love this place but just had a horrible experience. We waited 25 mins for a beer and a water. We placed our order and we were informed that because the manager was late getting out the specials, we weren't allowed to order yet!! That is placing our order would fringe upon her specials. When we explained that we had a one hour window and specifically came there to be in and out, we were told that it would be at least another 15mins until the manager would allow our order to be placed!! Needless to say, we left. Until there's better management and customer service, we won't return. read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Lebanon (that's not saying much, but it would be a great restaurant wherever it was). They have a great selection of entrees and sandwiches, and they always have a variety of specials. The portions are big and the prices are reasonable. My favorites are the mushroom cheesesteak and the crab cake sandwich. The owner is a bit difficult sometimes, which can detract from your experience, especially if she's your server. Besides that, the service is excellent. They have a policy that they won't cook steaks any more than medium, which I know may be a turn-off to a lot of people. I wish they had a better beer selection, too (more like the Gin Mill's). All in all, though, this is a great, no-frills restaurant. read more

Heard a lot of rave reviews about the steak. We took couple of friends with us. No one ended up with steak. One person ordered a sandwich and raved about it. Two of us ordered chicken parm. The chicken was great but the pasta was not good. Linguine was grossly over cooked, cold and has very plain, tasteless sauce. The waitress was great. Ordered Chianti by the glass. A good label and year but it must have been sitting for some time as it was very off and not drinkable. May give the bar food a chance some day or go for the steak as recommended. Keep in mind when you order 3 bacon tavern burgers with fries your plunking down 35 dollars plus tip and the last thing you expect is RUDE service. Here is our original review: Visited Franz's today(07/25/2013), was told by the grumpy one-eyed bartender that it would be best for me to give my food order to a waitress that was working tables, so he could sit there like a lump and watch TV. I am not a good looking person but this guy screams CREEEEPPY. He said placing your order by phone is easier than doing it in person??? If you are lucky enough to have the old man take your order you are rewarded with him staring at you the whole time you are there. Its awesome. The food is always good, if they'll take your order, I have called in orders to go and been told they aren't taking orders. I know the economy is supposed to be coming back but this is ridiculous, turning down business is just plain wrong. I've been there a few times but waited to write a review in case it was just one of those "bad nights". First of all, food is good - but it's the entire package I'm looking for. A previous experience left my family members not wanting to ever return. A few had ordered iced teas and weren't informed that there is "no such thing" as a free refill. What restaurant doesn't give free refills on soda's and ice tea? It is such a cheap drink even though they charge a ridiculous amount for a soda. Even the fine dining restaurants give you free soda refills. My boyfriend and I aren't big eaters and we share our food a lot. We had each ordered a soup and then split a sandwich and ordered fries. Imagine our surprise when we received the bill. We were overcharged for the fries according to the menu price AND they had the nerve to charge us a sharing plate fee! Lots of things wrong with this. First of all, we weren't informed ahead of time. Otherwise we would've just cut the sandwich in half ourselves - good grief. I've seen this practice in fine dining establishments and it is noted on their menu (was not noted on Franz's menu). I do understand why it's done in fine dining but in a tavern? Really? Let me note - I always share a sandwich at the Downtown Lounge - they present it on 2 plates, cut in half with the shared side. I never ask them to do this, they just do it as a courtesy to their customers oh - AND AT NO EXTRA CHARGE. Now that's customer service. I did want to register a complaint but he didn't want to cause a stink. Instead his thoughts are just we will never, ever come here again. I'd rather let the establishment know how I feel and see if they will rectify the situation. So we didn't say anything and just left, never to return again I'm afraid. Stopped here one night for a few beers expecting it to be a dive bar. It's more of a resturant though. And it's an amazing atmosphere. The place was pretty packed and we took two seats at the bar. Had a few beers and decided to grab a few appetizers. Food was great. All of it. We really enjoyed our time here and it was obvious everyone else was having fun from the smiles and laughing.
