This FRED MYER has very RACIST PRACTICES (Please Read) (Please read. The site only pushes positive reviews) While I was shopping at the Hawthorne store last night, with my noticeably Hispanic girlfriend, I watched her be mistreated by white woman at the self check out nearest to Hawthorne street. For context, we are older, grandmothers, and grew up in the Hawthorne area. My fried moved to Prineville, but is back in Portland for her mothers funeral this weekend. When we went to check out I noticed the employee at self check staring my friend down intensely. Her focus on my friend was so intense that the employee didn't notice that I needed help getting the sale price for an item. After my friend then payed for her items, my friend began to eat some yogurt bite she had bought, then threw her receipt in the trash. The employee then went directly to the trash can to dig my friends receipt of the garbage, and proceeded to check what items my friend bought. I was COMPLETELY ALARMED, DISGUSTED, and EMBARRASSED by what I was seeing. This Fred Meyers employee was profiling my friend as a thief because of her noticeable Hispanic ethnicity, and dark brown skin. I had opened my yogurt, but the employee did not do that to me, a blonde white woman. Prior to this, I have seen other situations at this store where they have been very un-kind to other people of color. This time really took the cake for me, hence me writing this review. Another time, I saw a woman who is employed at this Fred Myers wearing a shirt that said, "SAMBO", inside the store. "SAMBO" is a racial slur for African Americans. It's just deplorable that any store in this area would allow this kind of behavior to perpetuate after everything that Portland has been through during the 2020 protests due to racist practices. This store should be ashamed of it's self, and needs to do better. read more

All I can say is that if you are not whit, hippy, urban Portlander than do not frequent this store! My husband and I are very preppy and have money and usually spend quite a bit of money at Fred Meyer. We were just in the area so we went to this Freddy's location (which was a TOTAL mistake!). So, I dropped my husband at the front of the store and let him go into the store while I parked and ended up staying in the car with my little dog, it was a little to warm to let her sit in the car alone... So, just ask quick as I dropped him off and I parked I saw him walking out but he didn't have a bag with the items he went to shop for.. I was wondering if maybe they were out of what he wanted, which I though was odd but OK.. So, he got to the car and was completely furious! I asked what happened and he explained how he went into the store looked at the fruit and decided not to get anything in that dept so he went to pet section and that was when he heard a mans voice coming up behind him and he was on the phone saying , "the guy in the white shirt" he turned around and said "excuse me sir" the guy totally played stupid but continued to follow my husband down 2 more isles. He immediately confronted the guy and told him he knew he was LP and that he was being totally racist because he was the ONLY black man in the store, again the man played stupid. my husband went to the customer service desk and spoke to a woman there which she was equally disgusted with the mans behavior, so she gave my husband the GMs card and advised him to contact him the following day because he was in that day. So my husband told them both he was leaving the store and they lost his business for the behavior and contacted the GM the following day. Although the GM did nothing to make the situation any better, all he did was tell my husband sorry it happened, it was really disgusting!!! read more

Funky Freddys, as we call it - this Freddy turned hipster in the heart-land of hip - what more can we say, its a cool freddy with some vibe - if this Freddy were human form, he's be sporting a handle bar stach and some skinny levi's - They've definitely up there game here, aesthetically speaking. The exterior and interior are very pleasing to the eye... then you pull into the parking lot and all the fuzzy goodness goes away, as your racing to find a spot that has opened in the main lot - if you dont find one there, your in lucky, they have a upper-level parking structure now that seems to be open more often than not - have a look. For being in such an urban area, im even surprised they have a garden center, which we've scored some pretty good deals on planting flowers, etc. Now for the exciting stuff...... SUSHI....???? Yes! We noticed they have put in a sushi bar! Sushi = Freddy's? You would've never thought, huh? Well they did and its pretty decent, might I add. The one time we were at noon time we stopped and had a bite to eat. Prices vary from $1.10-$2.50, depending on what roll size you get. Not only did they have this glorious sushi bar going on, there bakery started carrying some pretty well known name-brand goods - Papa Hayden, Jaciva and other great deserts that you often dont find in all-in-one stores. TIP- You've gotta try the hipster donuts (or what portlanders call VOODOO-style donuts)- i.e.: Cereal donuts, bubble gum donuts, etc. - for under a $1/piece, get your sugar high on. Anyways, i could go on and on about everything in this store, but it would take up to much time. Groceries and Produce are on the street level, everything else is on the top level - which you can use the escalator or elevator to get too. The only down fall of this store is parking, hence the 3 stars. other than that, its a "One Stop Shop" kindof place! read more

An unfortunate incident regarding staff. While I was shopping at the Fred Meyer location listed above a member of asset protection with a shaved head and tattoos was blocking off the aisle with another member of security. After waiting for a moment to their obliviousness I asked them if this was a habit of theirs. They were immediately rude to me and started giving me shit saying "yep we're good at it huh?" I didn't want to deal with it and I asked why they were being rude and of course, blamed me. As I walked away I raised my voice saying "Hey this is asset protection everybody is careful." Then immediately after he began to get in my face with obvious anger and told me don't yell in his store. Of course, I asked for a manager, the guy refused. I continued to ask, he said "I am the manager". I told him to get his manager, he told me "I don't have to". I went to customer service and he followed me. Continuing to provoke me and escalate the situation. After the manager finally showed up he stood silent as I was provoked, and finally, after the situation was calming down I asked him to have skinhead stay away from me while I shop. He said, "I don't have to do that". Finally, after being provoked for a good 15 minutes I asked "What is your fucking problem?" the store manager used that as an excuse to kick me out of the store. I know I shouldn't be surprised by this sort of thing, but professional workplaces excuses that kind of behavior should never be tolerated. They're just disgusting people. I'm not against co-workers being friends, but when it comes to the point where there's no longer accountability isn't that too far? read more

Emerika is strange, let me tell ya. Walked in here to get some eats, goceries, you know the usual. Picked those out, talked to a machine (self checkout) and then married along upstairs. While searching for a 'flip phone' in this store, a well aged female in a walker comes by and pretty much assaults me with her, "do you know if anyone works here is available?" I walk by. Earplugs in. Woman: "DO YOU SPEAK ENGLISH? Moi: Still no reply. Woman: Any English? Wow. That's the biggest compliment I could have received on this very day. You think I don't speak any English, so you won't talk to me anymore! Horray! *throws confetti* Gotta keep this one up, for sure. These people out here don't know how to read non-verbal cues. i.e my back is turned away from you, which indicates I am focused on looking at something else and/or preoccupied with myself. People out here, I swear don't get this very simple simple piece of interpersonal communication. Actually, the most crucial piece of all, because 70% + of human communication is non-verbal. I cannot stand this store... The remodel annoys me because they are playing off the communities concern for the environment and making their store "green". While this is great for the Earth, it annoys me because I know full well that there is not one fat-cat rich prick at Fred Meyer corporate who gives two sh*ts about the environment. Its all about the dollars and manipulating people to get said dollars. Also its worth noting that they are running scared right now because New Seasons is planning a store about a block away. I hope that is takes a large share of this stores business. In the meantime I suggest you shop the many local businesses that line the Hawthorne strip and if you need groceries there is a Safeway just down the street. To many confusing price options...buy 5 for this price...Digital price...Card price. And then the Sale price? Every time I shop at Fred's...I have to tell the attendant that once again the promo is not in the computer..and it always rings up the higher price, not the sale price..It always favors Fred Meyers...not the customer. I believe that the attorney generals of several states should investigate this...as the company is making millions by fudging on the pricing....employers have told me that it is a game they play all day long! Will the customer see or catch the higher price being recorded...If not, Fred's makes the highest price and the customer gets screwed! Cha-Ching... They do this simply because they can...and the higher profits ensure that until someone really goes after them....It will continue. read more

Hawthorne Fred Meyer--Pharmacy--Absolutely the worst customer service ever. Have not encountered such a bad attitude in a really long time.Heard a young female pharmacy employee exclaim "She is so rude" about the lady ahead of me in line and I didn't see the woman do anything wrong! Do you have to act as if an employee is your new best friend to get good service here? Is it all of a sudden ok for a business to allow it's employees to talk about a customer within the customer's hearing? After hearing this girl loudly complain about the customer and then watching her talk to her fellow employees about this (oh yes, she got everyone involved) I decided to go elsewhere to get my perscription filled. The best Fred Meyer in Portland, no competition! I'm a huge fan of the floor plan at this one - all the food and general household things on the first floor with electronics, hardware, toys, seasonal things, etc up on the second floor. It makes navigating the store so much easier than the sprawling ones that tend to be in the suburbs - you know, the ones where if you remember you need carrots by the time you're in the dairy isle, it means a 10 minute trek to the other side of the store and back! Hawthorne Freddy's keeps it nice and compact, and on top of it all, the cashiers and other folks working there are always helpful and great to approach with a question. It's too bad you've sold out to Kroger - the gigantic food corporation that has no feel for the unique areas it encroaches upon. Just one of many complaints I have is this part featuring the Chicken Co. to get fried chicken meals. Now they are supplied by Pilgrim's Pride Corporation - one of the largest chicken suppliers in the world. They run these mega farms using all kinds of chemicals and abuse the chicken in horrible ways. They've been reported by many animal protection organizations like beating with metal rods and letting carcasses sit and rot in the cruel confining pens. Wielder Hollywood location is disgusting- trash and fluids all over main lobby. Dirty employees sprawled along smoking cigarettes and vaping while in uniform. Heavyset red headed slobber self checkout with exposed gut should be avoided; extremely rude and needs training in basic human relations. Open packages of food in multiple aisles opened a leaking contents on to adjacent items. I have been to third world countries with cleaner stores run by more courteous and apt employees. I had a really special dinner planned, and went shopping for the ingredients a day in advance with careful planning. I spoke to the man at the meat counter about my plans and he was extremely helpful in helping me pick the right cut. Unfortunately the day after my big night, everyone who ate the beef got food poisoning (including myself). This place consistently impresses me. I don't know if it's because they are trying to compete with the New Seasons right up the street, or what, but Freddy's kills on prices for produce, seafood, etc. And they have a great selection of natural/organic foods. Their beer and wine section is also really amazing. Lots of local products, too. I never thought I'd be such a fan of a chain grocery store, but Freddy's has stepped it up for sure. read more

Yes they did just remodel and yes the place is much nicer, but the service still lacks. I just waited in line for 45 minutes. Did they tell us what was happening, no. Did they tell us we should get in another line, no. Did they do anything......no. Get it together, you can pay millions to remodel but you can't pay enough to get better employees. read more
