We were spending a day at the SD Zoo when we decided it was too hot to be outside. We checked out Yelp for lunch ideas when we saw Freddy's Chophouse in the Gaslamp neighborhood. We didn't have a reservation, but thankfully they were not busy. We were quickly seated and waters were brought out with the menus. Our waiter was very friendly and informative about the menu items. We ordered the 14 oz ribeye and the bone-in 14 oz pork chop. Our meal came with a side. We opted to pay extra for the wedge salad. The wedge salad was excellent! My pork chop was good. The ribeye was ok. It needed a sauce like chimichurri or garlic butter. Overall, this is a great place to meet up with friends and family. Prices are competitive. My neighboring table said their bacon burger was tasty and the onion rings were good. The restaurant is clean and well maintained. The staff are friendly. This place came highly recommended by a friend, and it did not disappoint. We came during happy hour and started with the $10 espresso martinis and Old Fashioneds. Both were great and a solid value. There wasn't a kids menu, but the staff turned the buffalo chicken into plain chicken strips for my kid. He loved them, and I may have stolen a bite too. Crispy, juicy, and served with what tasted like homemade ranch. For dinner, we had the tomahawk and lobster with an upgraded side of lobster mac and cheese. Everything was rich, flavorful, and cooked well. They didn't have béarnaise sauce, but the horseradish sauce and butter paired perfectly with the steak. Service was friendly, pleasant, and attentive. The open air setting was also really comfortable. Even with today's weather, it stayed cool inside and never felt hot or stuffy. Great food, drinks, service, and atmosphere. I've seen all the social media posts about this place but never been here. While walking around downtown I finally stumbled upon this place and got a seat at the bar. It was still early but the bar was already packed. Even though it was early they have a happy hour going. I ordered the buffalo strips that come with fries along with a bourbon strawberry mule cocktail. The cocktail was $10! The drink was amazing and very refreshing. I work ordered a angel envy bourbon shot that was on special as well which was $7. The buffalo strips were ok and decent size wish they had more crunch to them and heat but for $10 it wasn't bad. Fries were ok I give them a 7/10. One pet peeve are places that don't offer blue cheese but only ranch. I had to suffer with ranch on my strips lol. I did place a take out order for sliders with onion rings. Wow three sliders were amazing and the onion rings were much better than the fries! The bartenders were great and very friendly and the place sorta reminded me of Whiskey House and a great date place as it's kinda dark as well. Freddy's chophouse has been my new hyperfixation. It had been on my husband's and my want to try list for at least a year or so (I wish we had tried it sooner.) We FINALLY went in June for his birthday and wow we were blown away! Gabby was a fantastic server. The food was so flavorful, steak was tender, drinks were perfect! It was the best birthday dinner we had in a while. The inside is nicely decorated. Can be a bit casual into a fancier dinner (depending on the time you go.) There is a very good vibe from the moment you're greeted until you get the check. Since we had such a good first experience, (and everytime after) we have been back 5 times (since late June) and let me tell you. It is consistent! The entire staff is phenomenal. The food is exceptionally good. Every single time my steak is always perfectly cooked. My drinks are always A1 (shoutout to Frankie for a bomb espresso, martini.) Their happy hour is a steal! Skirt steak is delicious if you want to ball on a budget. New York strip if you want to splurge a bit. Coconut shrimp is a must! Don't skip the house rolls or their salads! I haven't had a single bad (or even mid) bite since my first visit. So no matter if you want to have a nice expensive dinner or happy hour bite, you will receive fantastic service and food. Came here for dinner as a walk in. My party got sat quickly which was nice considering we didn't have a reservation. The ambiance is pretty chic inside but also a mix of casual. You could dress either way but more people were dressed nicer. Our server was really funny and entertaining. We ordered a few salads, drinks and our entrees. I ordered the linguini with shrimp. I am glad I added the shrimp because that was the highlight of the dish. Next time id order it without the sundried tomatoes since I didn't like the flavor and it was pretty strong. I liked the bread it came with. It was a big portion too. My party did not prefer the seasoning on the steaks since it was primarily pepper. Our server was nice to give us a dessert on the house. Luckily we were ready to order as we only ended up seeing our waiter twice during our visit. Food came out fast. Came here without reservations and was immediately greeted by the host who was so sweet and got us a table quite quickly. She then explained the entire menu to us and told us her favorites. Our Server Jordan, was very knowledgeable and kind. We ended up going with the mint mojito, mezcal watermelon drink, shared the 14oz ribeye and baked potato, and they were kind enough to split our meal. It was more than enough for the two of us. We got an early dinner tonight to celebrate our anniversary. We saw that Freddy's Chophouse has a tomahawk steak and lobster surf and turf dinner. The restaurant was decorated with a lovely ambiance and Chris, our sever, was very nice and made our celebration dinner special. Freddy's also has some delicious sides to choose from and happy hour specials. We tried the garlic mashed potatoes, the jalapeno bacon Mac and cheese, and a beautiful chopped wedge salad with blue cheese balsamic vinegar and ranch dressing that they split for us. Alan, the owner came over to talk to us. Freddy's is a family owned restaurant named after his dad. This was such a great and memorable evening for us. I've been here multiple times, once for my birthday, twice with friends and again last night with another friend. Every time I come here I enjoy everything about my visit! The food is wonderful and the price point can't be beat! Their happy hour is wonderful with great food and drink options. We had a reservation at 5:30 and were promptly welcomed and seated with a smile. Our server was also wonderful and very friendly. My friend and I enjoyed our dinner and drinks before setting off to the civic theater for an after dinner show which was very walkable. We had been told Freddy's was the place to go for a solid steak and honestly it did not disappoint. The skirt steak with chimichurri sauce and French fries was absolutely phenomenal. I will say, the chimichurri is not traditional, but still great! The French fries might be some of the best I have ever had honestly. My husband got the BBQ burger and he said it was melt in your mouth fantastic! The mojito was so delicious and the old fashion hit just right. The only reason I am putting 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the service. We waited 10 minutes, with a reservation, for the host to acknowledge us. I went to Freddy's Chophouse yesterday with my family for my brother's birthday. Overall it was a good experience, but it wasn't fabulous or mind-boggling. Just above average and pretty good. Let's break everything down. First, the service was very good. The wait staff and the manager were very friendly and very attentive. The only slightly odd thing that happened was when my draft Pacifico was forgotten, but I did eventually get it. Next, the atmosphere is nice. It's a good mixture between a fine dining feel and a bar vibe. The decorations are slightly gaudy and Consortium-Holdings-adjacent, but it's coherent enough for me to not be mad at it. Now the most important part--the food. For me, the food was about 4/5 stars. This is kind of a discount steakhouse. They offer ribeye, flank steak, filet mignon, salmon, chicken, and lobster dishes. They also offer a lot of entree side options and premium sides, as well as salads. For me, the food quality was a little lower than I'd have liked. It's good, but it's not really *all that* or anything. My flank steak was cooked decently and to my liking, but my brother's steak was nearly medium-well when he'd asked for medium-rare. My brother's wife's chicken was slightly overcooked. But the flavors were there overall. Not bad quality food or terrible cook/presentation, but off enough for us to notice. Finally, the cocktails. My espresso martini was pretty good, and they have a nice selection of beers. However, my mother's mezcal-guava-hybrid cocktail was pretty weird. Somehow the sweetness of the drink didn't mask or mix with the smokiness of the mezcal at all. Instead it was as if you registered smokiness and super-sweetness simultaneously yet separately. Quite an odd drink I'd recommend avoiding. That's it! 4/5 on food, 5/5 on service, and 4/ on atmosphere. read more

Came here on a Monday late afternoon for their happy hour. They had a lot of reservations coming in, but they gave us a nice spot outdoors in front. The food in descending order: Coconut Shrimp - saw another table order this and had to put in an order. Very crispy exterior, large pieces of shrimp (not the weird prepackaged butterflied ones), with a sweet and tangy sauce. Jalapeño Bacon Mac N Cheese - cheesy, but not overly cheesy. Got the jalapeño flavor without being very spicy. Kids were able to eat it. Pork Belly Toast - mushroom, porky, herby sauce over toast. It's a bit hard to eat, but really tasty. Summer Salad - spring greens with tomatoes, sliced apples, candied pecans, mozzarella cheese, and dressed with a vinaigrette and balsamic glaze. A nice complement to the other dishes Popcorn Shrimp - shrimp had a nice light batter. Fries were great (crispy outside, fluffy interior). Served with ketchup and a standard sweet chili sauce. I received both a text and a phone call to confirm my reservation, which I honestly appreciated because I have a busy schedule and reminders help a lot. Our reservation was for 4:30 PM, but our table was actually ready by 3:30, so we could have come earlier if we wanted. Our server was incredible. I had a party of six, but only two of us arrived early while the rest of the group came later. The restaurant had another reservation scheduled for our table at 6:30, but instead of rushing us out or cutting our time short, they kindly moved us to another table so we could stay longer. That extra effort really stood out to me because I know most restaurants stick strictly to their policies. I truly appreciated them going the extra mile. Another sweet touch: we forgot birthday candles for our celebration, and the staff brought out sparklers that they normally use for their flights. It made the moment feel special and thoughtful. Now for the food, the 10 oz skirt steak was incredible. It literally melted in my mouth. If I could make one suggestion, pairing it with a bit of blue cheese crumbles would be a chef's kiss because the steak was that good. Several people in our group ordered it and we all agreed it was delicious. The coconut shrimp was also amazing, especially with the sauce.
