Very Good I Enjoyed The Food As Well As Being Greeted As My Family And I Walked Into The Restaurant. Great Energy

Ambiance was nice, upon first glance the servers appeared to be pleasant towards everyone. Our server however, was more worried about doing her side work than making sure we were taken care of. I ordered the chicken livers and wanted hot sauce. I also ordered a glass of Cabernet. By the time the waitress brought the hot sauce and my wine, my Chicken livers were half eaten and the remaining food was cold. My Husband wanted a piece of the raisin pie. The server said she would save him a piece and when it came time for dessert she said someone took the note off the piece of pie and served it anyway. All that was offered was an "I'm sorry" from the waitress. She said she would come back and see if we wanted anything else- 20 minutes she came back. No manager came back to apologize for the mistake, no offer was made to try and makeup for the error of the staff. The food was good but we can get prime rib at other local steakhouses less than we paid for the ribeye. The specials don't have prices listed and it's our fault for not asking, but they are significantly higher than the menu items. We saw out waitress maybe 4 times total our whole meal, while the other waitresses were actively chatting with their tables... the cost of the food would have been worth it if the service would have even been mediocre... I give the food 4/5 and the service 1/5... definitely will not be back because there even the apology offered by the server was offered with a shrug of her shoulders taking any sincerity she had off the table. Standard fair, small town steak place. Food was good, nothing extravagant or earth shaking just good. From the clientele looks to be a place where families frequent, and possibly gave for gens, though I don't know the restaurants history. There were 2 birthday parties in the house and drinks were flowing from the bar; beer & martinis appeared as fan faves. Old style salad bar that was packed with yummy salads like; pasta, potato, Napa, and slaw. Boiled eggs would have made it chef's kiss, speaking to my 70-80's child heart. We all have the prime rib. Beer is bottle only but you can get a chilled mug. I ended with a price of banana cream pie "to go" that I had for breakfast. The cream to filling ratio was not even, I would have expected more banana cream filling. Overall glad we gave it a try. read more

Relaxed friendly service. Salad bar with the meal was good. Two soups (beef stew and chicken & rice) on the bar along with a jello salad and broccoli/cauliflower salad . Would have liked hard boiled egg for the salad. Bread was brought to the table which included 3 small cinnamon rolls that were very yummy. We had KC strip, prime rib and salmon w/orange glaze. All good but the prime rib wasn't finished on the grill as requested. The food was good but for the price, the Ambience was lacking. The manager was spread out at the 1st table with bookkeeping, laptop, tickets and schedule. She talked to a waitress/cook from her seat bellowing throughout the dinning room. read more

I really loved my salmon. It was just a bit overdone, but I'm completely fine with that because those crunchy edges were the tastiest. It was the perfect size. The captains treasure was a big drink which I appreciated and it was good. The roll and cinnamon roll was excellent. Thank you for having real butter and margarine--that is really great to have a choice. I was there with a group of 8 and we just bellied up to the bar. It was a great time! What a sweet spot in St. Joseph MO! A few of us were in town for the soccer ID camp in Maryville but we stayed in St. Joseph. A friend found this spot so I made a reservation for our group. Pro tip... if you have a large group make a reservation! If you're here on a weekend.... Make a reservation! This establishment has a family style feel. Quaint and informal but with a feeling the food will be great! They had a great drink menu and us parents enjoyed a wine or cocktail. The girls had some macaroni and cheese bites which were devoured. Most of us ordered stakes. There were quite a few steak options. My husband and I ordered the 12 oz KC strip (med rare) to split. Since we split they also gave us two twice baked potatoes. We also got the salad bar and steak potato soup. The salad bar was decently full. With my food allergies I am accustomed to limited choices. I felt the salad bar had lots of choices for my gluten/dairy/egg and grain free needs. My husband enjoyed the steak and potato soup. It had great flavor. The potatoes were your typical twice baked potato. A good mashed potato inside a potato skin and heated up. The steak was tender, had beautiful grill marks but just not seasoned well and just slightly over cooked. It could have used some seasoning before cooking or something to that effect. I guess it's hard to order steak when your cajun roots are engrained to a well seasoned meat ;-). We do not normally eat steak out because my father in law and husband are truly masters when it comes to grilling steaks. Since we were at a steak house we decided to take the plunge. All this to say we did enjoy our meal but would try a different steak if we were to come back. If there is any advice I can offer... don't be scared to use a simple salt and pepper on your KC strips. Even maybe put a little garlic into the seasoning or bastes with a rosemary butter sauce when cooking ;-)! I am giving them 5 stars because you can tell this is a family establishment and most likely a local favorite! And the ladies were super sweet accommodating our large group of 14! Visited at noon on a Friday. I ordered the "triple decker BLT." We were greeted and seated promptly. The "combination salad" was simple and the lettuce slightly wilty. It seemed like a cheap bagged salad, and could've been made better with a few more of fresh veggies. The triple decker BLT was actually a half-club sandwich. It would have been much tastier with better bread, fresher lettuce, and an actual second layer of BLT (no cheese and ham). Our server was attentive and friendly. The Fredrick (sic) Inn on Frederick Avenue in St. Joseph, Missouri is in one of the many remaining 100+ year old buildings of the city. It was recommended for local flavor by the manager of the Pony Express Museum. Very home-cooked fare, and just fine. I had the liver and onions and enjoyed that dish, which is quickly vanishing from American restaurants. I like it for the variety. The town has more Victorian houses and buildings than nearly anywhere. I guess no one was interested in tearing them down to build new. There's a haunted Victorian vibe all around this whole part of the mid west. read more

We were traveling home back in June of 2021 and this place was a surprising find!! St Joseph, MO was a dreary looking city. There were parts that looked on the sketchy side. The roads could use some serious work, but in the midst of the somewhat sleepy downtown area, we encountered Fredrick Inn. We noted several positive reviews in Yelp, but with the rundown look of the parking lot and the city in general, we might have passed on it. Glad we didn't!! We sat down fast and got our drinks in no time! Menu is chock-full of delicious options, but we spotted prime rib and decided on it right away! Not only did we get the best darn prime rib we've had in long time, but also we got unlimited soup and salad bar! The meat was cooked perfectly and delicious! Everything about our meal couldn't be better! They only do prime rib on Friday and Saturday nights, and it looked to me as if this is a big draw for Frederick Inn. The service was stellar and the place had a bit of an old world feel on the inside. They had craft beers and a full bar. Plus, I hear they are famous for their strawberry pie. I'm pretty glad we stopped there. Definitely added Frederick Inn on my bookmarks of great little restaurants so that if we come this way again, we'll be sure to stop by!! read more

I am not quite sure what happened since our last visit to St. Joe in September of 2014, but boy has it gone downhill. It was plain ole lousy. I started with the salad bar, it was very messy and tongs were missing out of their containers. The salad tasted fine everything else was just bleh. My husband had the spinach salad that he used to always get when he lived here in St. Joe and he said it was oily and just didn't taste the same. We then had an order of fried mushrooms, they were pretty good. I had fried chicken (white meat) with mashed and corn. Chicken was flavorless, wet inside and greasy. My husband had catfish because that was always his go to meal when he came here and he said it was nothing like he remembered. The complimentary cinnamon rolls were probably the best part of the meal. All in all, we both agreed to remove this restaurant from of our list of places to dine while here in Missouri. read more

Going to go ahead with a three star because the first time we came here my sister and I shared the pork tenderloin sandwich and it was actually very good. People are friendly. Came back tonight for the first time to try the steaks and they were not very good. My mother had a $33 ribeye that was tough as boot leather. Sister ordered the $25 Kansas City strip, but it was super thin like a skirt steak. She ordered it medium and of course it was well done. She never had a chance to send it back because the waitress did not come back to check. Additionally, we saw our food sitting over on a tray outside the service door for a few minutes before it hit our table, so my $40 filet was barely warm and slightly overcooked as well. They were very busy so I will add that in but for a number one rated steakhouse we really expected something much better than what we got. All of them needed more seasoning! They did take $20 off the bill, but you would've thought a manager would've came over and made apologies instead of leaving it on the young waitress. we also tried the calamari sticks and they were not good either. Maybe a frozen product? ... tasted like the old fish sticks we used to have as kids. Disappointed for sure. 1 star for tonight!!! read more

Passing through town en route to St. Louis. Looked for a place to have a nice dinner and found Frederick Inn and decided to try it. Had a wonderful KC Strip steak, tasty and tender. Strawberry pie for dessert topped it off nicely. The ladies serving were a delight and left wishing we could make this a regular place if only we didn't live 1500 miles away. I have eaten at the Fredrick Inn more times than I could ever count over the years. I typically get the spinach salad and fried whole catfish. I recall a time where I thought the Fredrick Inn could not be beaten for this meal. Perhaps it is the fact that I now live in an area that does not have catfish, and have not had it in five years, or the fact that the restaurant is declining in quality over the years, but I was not overly impressed with my meal this time. The spinach salad was drenched in oil and the catfish did not have the same flavor that it once did. We started with an order of fried mushrooms, which were also okay at best. The ambiance has never changed in over 40 years, and is becoming quite dated. This may be, perhaps, due to the majority of the patrons being from that era. Sadly, I would probably say we will skip the Fredrick Inn on our next visit. read more

I've been here twice for lunch and I'm not really seeing the hype. To be fair, this place is packed for lunch so I thought the food would be decent. I ordered the grilled salmon the first time with green beans and a salad. The salad was mediocre like it was a generic bagged salad with no other toppings aside from dressing. Then came lunch. The salmon had grilled marks but has absolutely no flavor and was extremely dry. The green beans were canned green beans also. Two other people got the grilled salmon and were disappointed. Second time was the fried chicken lunch. The chicken was ok as far as coating but no flavor. The sides were mediocre also. I'm just getting the vibe for this place and would not recommend. read more

Tonight was my first time ever dining at the Frederick Inn. I was so surprised how busy it was at 6:30pm. That is always a good sign. A good friend took me there tonight and we absolutely had the best time. The food was out of this world! I had the roasted red pepper soup, the spinach salad, the filet and the twice baked potato. In the end it was way too much food for me, but I ate almost EVERY last bite. I highly recommend this family owned business and I am already making plans for bringing my entire family back next Friday. Y'all make sure you make reservations as they get packed quickly. Becky was a complete joy as our server and just a blast to be around. She lights up a room with her personality. This is the type of small town steakhouse that has sadly disappeared. Service- fantastic and friendly. Food- Prime Rib was yummy, comes with a salad bar with lots of homemade salads_ potato, macaroni, broccoli, etc. Dont skip the chicken noodle soup, one of the best I have had. When the two of us showed up on a Friday night around 7:40pm the place was PACKED. There were a couple of seats at the bar, but all of the tables had about a 30 minute wait time. We were glad to have made a reservation. The staff were all super friendly and I could tell there were some people that make this restaurant their regular weekly stop. We had the Kansas City strip with the all you can eat soup and salad along with a baked potato. The chili was delicious and the salad bar had your typical selection of toppings and dressings. The steak was just okay. It kind of reminded me of an outback steak, nothing to write home about. The baked potato was cooked perfectly on the inside. Overall, it was a pretty good meal. read more

On our way to Omaha, stopped for the night in St. Joe and were so very fortunate to find our way to this place for dinner. Very busy, did not have reservations (recommend you reserve ahead if you go), but were seated within 15 minutes. Just enough time to grab a drink from the bar. Both the bar and restaurant sides have the feel of a place that has been there awhile, knows what they are doing, and makes no pretenses about it. Very friendly staff, eager to serve and to accommodate my wife's dietary limitations. She had the top sirloin and baked potato and said they were perfect. I had the KC strip and twice baked potato and a spinach salad; everything very flavorful, steak cooked just to my specifications, potato a real treat. We had a couple of glasses of Kendall Jackson Cabernet Sauvignon, which was the ideal accompaniment. Prices very reasonable. This has a wonderful locals feel to it; they are probably only too willing to allow the chain steakhouses nearer the Interstate get most of visiting one-nighters. read more
