This bar screams hometown and was full of people that matched the description. It was a packed night when my friends and I visited, and like any busy bar it took a minute to get to the front of the line. The music was loud and fun, I liked the variety of genres. I've been to the Hi-Ho twice in a 12 year span. My 1st visit was late night drinks and we had a great time with the locals, we actually left just so we could experience more of St Joe and realized later that we should have stayed there. My second visit was a Sunday afternoon when we our first 7 places we wanted to eat at were closed. Nothing is open in DT St. Joe on a Sunday! I ordered the bacon wrapped stuffed jalapeños as a starter and the Three Pigs sandwich. The jalapeños were scrumptious but small and pricey at 6 for $9. The sandwich was very bland, the tenderloin was more like a small breaded pork chop deep fried with bacon and some mass produced pulled pork. Just OK. Hi-Ho? More like Ho-Hum. If you are hungry ... don't waste your money. Again, Yelp reviewers raved about the food here, so we gave it a try. What a disappointment! It seems as though low expectations have become the norm among many customers in the region because I am continuously shocked by how appalling food and service turn out to be at places with four and five-star ratings (out of five). The highlight here was the nice guy behind the bar. The lowlights were the food, the prices, and his rude, blonde, female companion. The companion, a young, blonde woman in her twenties, worked behind the bar and as a server. When we first arrived, I had to get out of her way as she forced her way past me to get to a table, no "excuse me", nothing. Then, after I noticed that a couple of drunk guys had turned the TV I was watching the National League Division Series between the Cubs and the Cardinals on away from me (so they could watch it - again, without asking), I asked her if I could please continue watching the game we had taken that table specifically to see. She said: "well, they've been at that table all day", to which I replied "so?". She finally went over and turned the TV back in our direction after rolling her eyes. She then ignored us for 15 minutes until the nice guy behind the bar came over to take our order. I almost left at that point and probably should have looking back, but we decided to stay and ordered a few different things to sample the menu. As appetizers, we had a beef "slider" with cheese ($3.58) and a deep-fried beef taco ($2.79). The slider was a tiny piece of frozen meat with American cheese between two tiny bun halves, that was it. Hardly worth the price. The taco was in a greasy flour tortilla, but otherwise was not bad, but overpriced by $.29 to $.79. For our mains, we had a patty melt with onion rings ($8.99) and a Cuban sandwich with fries ($9.49). The patty melt's beef patty was small, there was hardly any cheese, the onions were almost raw (not "grilled"), and the onion rings tasted of fish because the frier obviously had not been cleaned in quite a while. The Cuban tasted decent, but there was not nearly enough meat or cheese and the fries were "OK". I was visiting friends in St. Joseph, when I found Hi-Ho Bar & Grill. In a nutshell, small yet charming. It's a great local bar that serves delicious food. I enjoyed wings and an ice-cold beer, but they have an extensive menu with an excellent array of choices. I'm from Southern California, walking into Hi-Ho reminded me of walking into a local beach bar. Friendly patrons, reasonable food and drink prices, and amiable staff. I went to this St Joe bar while in town for a funeral. Not the happiest of affairs. There was just four of us at 2:30 on a Thursday so it certainly wasn't crowded. The drinks were pretty cheap although the service was slow. I'll credit that to being there in the middle of the afternoon (usually the slower the place, the worse the service, ironically). We told the bartender taking care of us why we were there and I also got the impression he was being kind and giving us space... and yet it still took us 1 1/2 hours to order drinks and food and to finish. Definitely a much slower pace than most of the bars and grills i go to. As far as ambiance, I mean, this is a true dive bar. Dingy and dark, I'm sure it used to be the type of place where you could wipe yellow smoke tar off the tables if you'd liked. It's not too bad now, at least. Clean anyway. If I wanted a dive bar in St Joe, I probably won't pick this place again. The food was usual fare and noting too fancy. I got the tenderloin and it was definitely left in a fryer for a couple minutes too long. First timer to Hi-Ho as I was visiting my son at MWSU. We went there on recommendations from a few friends, and the reviews were good so we ventured there for lunch today. As we walked in a few people looked at us like, "Who are these people?", but that is to be expected in a smaller town. The waitress walked over, never said hello, and just asked what we wanted to drink - that was a bit of a turnoff. She did warm up to us (a little) during our visit and we realized there was a pub crawl (we got to see Superman!) :) going on so she might have just been run ragged. Now the food...it was GOOD! So good that my son said that was going to be his new weekend spot - it's usually Applebee's or 54th Street. The tenderloins could have been taken out of the fryer about 2 minutes sooner but it didn't matter because the stuff on the sandwich (hot sauce, pepperjack, and BACON) was tasty, the other tenderloin had bacon, brisket and BBQ Sauce - yum! His girlfriend had a hamburger and she said it was really good too. The food at the Hi-Ho is exceptional considering it is a dive bar. And I say dive in all respect. I love dive bars and Hi-Ho is on the cusp of being one. It is still a smoking establishment which drops a star in my rating, but during good weather, the diningroom opens to outside air and makes all the difference. There are a few reasons I like this place. First it's a bar and grill and the grill is actually good. The food here is better than most of the pure food joints in town. The hi ho Cuban, the old man pizza and the hi ho chips are a few of my favorites For working lunches we often times roll In there 4 or 5 people deep. Request a large quiet table with power and sit there for hours while we work and meet. It's perfect. The wifi is good and the service is good. Every few years they update something. The owners seem to put money back u to their business and that's easy to see when you walk in. It has the local bar feel on one side and the other side is great for dinner, private events Etc. There was a football game on so we were expecting at least a solid crowd but literally there were 3 other people in there. They were locals and knew the bartender so grabbed his attention. We have ordered hamburgers and French fries numerous times for dine in and carry out. They used to be great but the last two times the food has been awful. There will not be a 3rd bad experience. Their portions have decreased a bunch and their prices haven't. We just got a hamburger and fries and a cheeseburger and fries and got home and there was just meat and bun ( and cheese on the one) NO KETCHUP....NO Mustard....NO PICKLES.....NO LETTUCE....NO TOMATO.......NOTHING.
