My garden club had our Christmas luncheon here and it was amazing. Everyone loved the food and decor! I had salmon and it was great, as always. The desserts were all FABULOUS! The pistachio cranberry bread was inspirational--a couple of people said they were going to try to make it. The melted chocolate truffle was amazing, as always. My very favorite was the white chocolate mousse--the dot of raspberry sauce was delightful. The mousse was light and airy but also rich and decadent--and my last bite had a white chocolate chip. I have to start this review with an apology to St. Joseph, Missouri. I love the city, it is interesting, and we absolutely love the city. Our only critique is the lack of fine dining. Luckily, that is where the JC Wyatt House comes in. Not only is the food top rate, but the entire experience is amazing. At the JC Wyatt House, you have dinner in an intimate, small dining room inside a Victorian Mansion. Here is how it works. They are only open on Thursday and Friday, 1130am to 1230pm, for lunch and Wednesday thru Saturday, 530pm to 7pm for dinner. Reservations are required and you will choose your main entree for all of your party when you make your reservation. We went for our wedding anniversary and were not disappointed. We arrived a few minutes before our 6pm reservation and were seated. At exactly 6pm, our server, Chris, started with our choice of hors d'oeuvres. Either a potato and fresh vegetable soup, or shrimp cocktail. My wife had the shrimp, and I had the soup. Both were outstanding. For dinner, I had the lamb, and my wife had the filet mignon. Both came with potatoes, carrots and a roll. Again, both meals were outstanding. We finished with a dessert trio that was amazing. Most of the shrimp cocktail was good, there was one piece a little stale. The lamb and salmon were overcooked. My date ordered her lamb "medium rare" so it was quite a surprise that is was "medium well done" instead, she didn't eat most of it. Salmon should be much more lightly cooked than what they served. The sides were good. Desserts were good. Nice interesting ambiance in a renovated older house. Bring your own beer or wine if you want that. If I come back would probably order the steak instead and tell them medium rare, please don't overcook it. Service was generally good, they are friendly. You can be comfortable here in a suit/dress or more casual, but don't recommend sloppy attire. If they get their kitchen execution together it could be a really nice place. read more

If there were a six star rating, this dining experience would deserve it! On a quick trip to St. Joe to visit their unique museums, my son stumbled upon the JC Wyatt house through a restaurant search. I'm so glad he did. I was unsure of what to expect. You will need to have a reservation. You are required to select your entre ahead of time. Bring in your own wine as no alcohol is served there. An unusual restaurant choice turned into a wonderful dining experience. We were treated like we were their most valued patrons. The food was outstanding! The house is fascinating. Dinner at JC Wyatt house is an absolute, must do, incredible experience. The setting for dinner is an impeccable, lovingly restored Victorian mansion. Expect to be regaled by the proprietor and his partner of stories from his 20 plus years in New York City as a restauranteur that was popular with Hollywood clientele, commissioned paintings by his partner, a collection of handcrafted doll house furniture, the history of JC Wyatt, an incredibly curated collection of seasonal decorations, etc. I equated the experience to "dinner and a show". Oh so good! Planned a going away lunch for a good friend and coworker. We had a group of 9 who I had some difficulty wrangling a pre order out of, but once the order was submitted via e-mail to Jim, I received a confirmation later that evening and we were set for lunch two days out. Everyone was awed at the interior of the home. A real labor of love to have such a complete Victorian atmosphere and keep it so neat and clean. Dust and neglect is a big turnoff in any restaurant experience, but I challenge you to find any here! Our lunches consisted of various salads; Roasted Salmon, Shrimp Salad on Croissant, Chicken Salad with Spinach and Feta Quiché, and the Mandarin Chicken Entree salad were big winners. I had the Beef and Blue cheese entree salad. Amazing! Dried cherries, glazed walnuts, mixed greens and perfectly cooked beef slices complemented with blue cheese, Magnifiqué! Everyone gushed about their lunches and were soon attracted to the marvelous aroma of their house coffee. Hands down, the best, balanced coffee I have ever had in a restaurant. But the pièce de résistance was the dessert trio! The dark chocolate pudding, the light lemon cupcake, and cheesecake mousse... too much. The most decadent lunch we as a group have ever experienced, and all for around $15.00 each. The biggest challenge is getting your group to decide in advance for an outing like this, but once you have "trained" them, there is no delay on getting people on board for next time. read more

This dining experience is a must in St. Joe! They were waiting by the door when we pulled up, and were treated as family. Jim and Jeff were very hospitable and we loved taking to them! Found this looking for a unique place to celebrate my sister's 65th Birthday. It was everything we possibly could have hoped for! As indicated on the webpage, we made our reservation two days in advance and pre-ordered our meals. From the moment we arrived, we felt like honored guests as the host Jim took our coats to hang up for us and escorted us into a charming room at the front. There was a larger party in the room in the back, but we had our area to ourselves for our lunch. Service was impeccable, and the food delightful. We had the salmon, the apple cider chicken, and the quiche with chicken salad. All so delicious! The dessert trio was yummy from the baked chocolate mousse to the mint Chocolate cheesecake and the filled cupcake. More than I could finish. We enjoyed visiting with Jim also. He was very personable, and while I fill that if we had wanted just a quiet service, that would have been fine, he was very happy to fill us in on the history of the beautiful historic mansion he has personally restored. As we are all history buffs, we enjoyed this aspect of the experience immensely. Once again this fine dining experience was among the most memorable of evenings we have ever had together. The ambiance, the personal attention and then the amazing, delicate, and savory foods. My medium+ steak was deliciously cooked end to end to perfection. My husband had his steak medium rare and his was also cooked to perfection throughout. Mom had the pork tenderloin medallions and dad had the salmon, and all meals were melt in your mouth heaven. Although we shared each of the choices in the first course, (omg, the cheese soufflé, mushroom ravioli, and crab cake) no one offered to share their entrees other than a tiny bite. Then came the finale, the trio of desserts and coffee! My first visit to this hidden gem. We made reservations for 8. I was a little skeptical after learning this was in a old home in St. Joseph. However, from the moment we stepped inside we were transported. The owner was so pleasant and hospitable! We felt like we were eating dinner at an old friends home. The antiques, the stories and the history made the experience even better. The food.....oh, the food! The three courses were amazing! Each one better than the last. The starters were a meal all their own. Incredible! Our filets were cooked perfectly and were so tender that we used butter knives to cut them. Some of our party had rack of lamb or salmon and each of them endlessly commented in how delicious it was. The desserts were delectible and just the right amount after two large courses. This was my lady's and my first time visiting St Joe for a getaway weekend. Decides to look up some too restaurants and fun places to try for cuisine and came across this place. Was able to make reservations and confirm menu selections easily with no hassle (be sure to do so in advance per instructions). Right off the bat the decor and the ambience of the house can be felt..and it is very pleasant. Beautiful garden along with its artistic colors and decorations welcome the guests with rolling appetites. Jim, the owner of the restaurant AND house, greeted us at the door before we even got to the front door. Immediately entering I felt like I was in 1800s setting, with the backdrop exhuming antique history and classy decor. Every detail from the color of the walls to the table decorations was very pleasing to the eye. The food was absolutely amazing; the chef (Jeff) moved from New York and you can definitely taste the exquisite and high quality flavors in their food. I would give this place 2 stars and my wife 4, so 3 is the average of our opinions. The house is interesting to look at. The food is pretty blah and pricey. For our first course I got a tomato and mozzarella salad. It was very nice. My wife couldn't decide and ordered a sampler of all three options-- the salad, gazpacho with crab meat, and sage ricotta cheese ravioli. She like the ravioli the best but liked all three. I ordered the lamb chops. They were severely overcooked and not seasoned. The mashed potatoes were bland. The mixed vegetables were nice. My wife got the pork tenderloin with a cherry sauce. She liked it and the potatoes and vegetables too. The dessert trio consisted of a chocolate truffle dish, a key lime cupcake, and a small cheesecake. The chocolate was overwhelmingly chocolate which my wife liked and I didn't. The cupcake was overly dry and filling bland. The cheesecake was no better than the little frozen cheesecake cube you can buy in Sam's Club. My wife said the coffee was very good. At $89, I found the entire experience subpar and would resist returning. read more
