I got my hair cut by current owner a few times before the pandemic and thought it wasn't so bad. In the neighborhood today and thought I'd drop in for just a trim. It was horrible experience. When he was done I looked in the mirror and one side was still longer than the other. So he tries to fix it and it's still not even on both sides. I didn't want him cutting down my already balding hair any more, so I just said it's better and paid. Can't even make it right the second time. Ended up going to another barber who fixed it all.. sides, back, and top. Don't recommend this barber. read more

Damon's great. I've been going to him for the past 3 years, and even though I'm moving up north for a job, every time I visit family I'm making sure to fit a haircut into the schedule. You get the interaction you're up for. If you want to talk or be silent, he'll accommodate you. As far as haircuts go, Damon has always made sure I've walked out happy. If that means I want juuust a little more trimmed off one side of my head, he's glad to do it. Just keep your expectations realistic. If you're specific about what you want, he'll make it work for you. If you don't know what you want and are looking for someone who'll give you a full consultation on what would look good on you, there's another place for that called a salon, and it's going to cost a lot more than the 12-13 bucks that Damon charges. read more

Wielding his scissors like the samurai swords of his ancestors, this barber knows how to handle a blade. This guy gave me the best haircut of my life for less than $15....and let's not forget the free BEER! You could drive by this place a hundred times and not notice it. Nestled at the end of a small shopping center, next to a liquor store, and across the street from a car dealership, this unimposing shop is definitely a trip back in time. Walking in you immediately notice the 50s-style facade, with old bottles of hair tonic sitting on shelves, chrome chairs, and red white and blue tiles adorning the floor. You're promptly greeted by the shop's owner who introduces himself, offers you a seat, and the occasional beer. He handed me an ice cold PBR and apologetically explained that he usually had better stuff, but his kegarator was broken. Things only got better from there. He asked me what kind of cut I wanted, I told him exactly what I had in mind, and he went to work. Now, most people know that barbers usually have selective hearing. They'll hear bits and pieces of your request and will proceed to fill in the gaps with their own imaginative ideas. This guy was definitely not the usual fare. He gave me exactly what I asked for and even used a straight-razor with hot lather to fix up the little odds and ends. I just sat there, sipping my beer, watching the Laker game, and chatting with him like he was an old buddy. In the end, I walked out with an amazing haircut and a new friend. I went there today: i usually cut my own hair but today I was kind of lazy and decided to try a cut I had years ago. it was a nice little place, own by a polite guy, I showed him an old picture of me with the hairstyle i was going for. it was like I've never done, he just did a normal cut... I asked him to make the hair a little shorter on the sides, he starts grumbling and followed my request. It took 40 min, the same it usually takes me to cut the hair and clean the floor.... it cost 13 $ probably next time I will keep my 13 $, and do it by myself. but do not get me wrong:if you go there for the only request of mohawk / shave your head or a simple cut my hair at this long it will work just fine. read more

Great place for a classic or contemporary haircut, that won't break the bank. Jimmy has been cutting my hair for about a year and he always takes the time to focus on the details and get it right, each time. I've even mixed things up on Jimmy and he always provides great advice to ensure that I not only get a great cut, but a cut that suits my personality and look. Hair aside, Jimmy is just a great guy, which is important to me if someone's going to be playing with my hair for 30-45 minutes. Always lots of laughs. I'm honestly only giving it 3 stars instead of 4 or 5 because it is really my first time getting a cut here. My next cut i'm definitely going back and i'll update then. My cut looks great. I actually haven't had to fix anything. No strays and the transition between size 4 and 8 is excellent. I don't know how he'd do with longer cuts, but if it involves clippers and a little scissor work, he seems competent. As an establishment I get what they are going for but it could use a little something. I can't put my finger on it. I found the parking to be a breeze on a Friday at 530p. He didn't have a wait and I was out of there in about 20 minutes. Usually my haircut doesn't take but 10 minutes but the owner and I chatted the whole time. I've been going to commercial hair stylists (Supercuts) for years and finally got tired of it. Having to explain what you want every time you visit because you always have your hair cut by a different person and feeling like they don't even care about you finally got to me so I searched for something more personal and down to earth. This barber shop is that! I took a chance on this place and I'm very glad I did. The barber knew exactly what I wanted even after I explained it wrong. Vintage hair tonic ads and products line the walls and shelves, replete with a non-functioning console TV to add to the atmosphere...wait a minute - tune into CBS! Cronkite's doing a special on the Apollo 11 moon landing!! Don't worry - there's another more modern, compact TV in the other corner. But, why bother? I personally prefer to engage Damon (or Kazu, as he prefers to be called) in some witty banter while he expertly navigates my slightly receding dome with his barbering implements. Thought I'd write a review since it seems like most all of these are pretty old... Stopped in for a haircut based on reviews - and yeah, sure, there were some old bad reviews, but you can't please all of the people all of the time... I was in town on business, needed a hair cut bad and didn't have time to get back to my regular place. Great little hole in the wall shop. Nice guy, great quick hair cut, great price. My hair's not hard to cut, and the barber did a great job. I'm totally satisfied. Nice memorabilia in the shop too - makes me remember back to when I was a little kid with the hair tonic, lotions and advertisements. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars (I'd give 4 1/2 since this is a pretty small ding) is that there are no mirrors that you can see yourself in while you're getting your haircut. I like to watch the barber work while he/she's cutting my hair - watch the progress to see if they're cutting too short/too long. Went to this spot due to the Yelp recommendations and it was awesome. I was looking for a place to get a haircut during my lunch break and came here. I was the only one there on a Friday afternoon! Quick service and a nice chat. Damon was really cool and had some interesting view points on diffrent topics. Saw 4 stars overall w 30 reviews and thought I'd give them a try. Felt good about my choice in the area, but that changed as soon as the clippers touched my hair. The hands were not confident... felt very uneasy but thought I'd give the guy a chance...halfway thru the cut I knew I was in trouble. When he was done and handed me the mirror to check the cut out, I saw my hair was butchered. Uneven cuts everywhere! Ask him if it was his first time cutting hair. I came across this Barber Shop on Yelp and decided to give it a try about a year ago and haven't stopped coming back. The shop has a nice retro cozy feel to it, right when you walk in. I told him the kind of haircut I needed and he listened attentively and executed with precision. I have gotten all kinds of haircuts from faux hawks to tapers and fades. He can do it all. It's always a good time here from talking to sports and politics or just life, this barber shop has it all, great cuts, great barber, and at a great price! First off, let me start by saying I don't usually write reviews, especially bad ones since I know that it could have an impact on their financial situation. But I couldn't keep quiet about the multiple bad experiences at this place. There are some good things about this place, such as the price, and that you can get in and out in a very short amount of time. He is extremely fast at giving a haircut, but fast doesn't necessarily mean good. I first went to this place during my lunch break since I badly needed a cut. I just asked for a trim. I was in and out in about seven minutes. The cut was definitely shorter than I was expecting, but wasn't something to make a fuss about. Since I work a lot, it is hard for me to find a place that is quick and convenient. This place is definitely that. So I went in the second time and asked him to leave it long, just clean it up a bit. Unfortunately the way his place is set up, the only mirror available is behind you, so you can't see how the cut is coming along. When he was done, I took a look at it and it was WAY short. Definitely wasn't happy with how short he made it. I'm sure he's so used to everyone wanting it short that he just does the same cut continuously and not really listen when you say "keep it long". So this last time I went in was the last straw. I specifically told him to leave it long. I told him about my previous experience and that I didn't want him to cut it short. He said he would start by leaving it long and then if I wanted it shorter, he would do a little bit more at a time. So then, he was cutting away, and then says "you're all done". He didn't even check to see if I wanted it shorter, or if it was acceptable. When I turned around I was furious. He made it so short and bad that I literally had to go out and buy a hat immediately. I have given this guy the benefit of the doubt, and after several chances, I couldn't keep quiet. I made it very clear to him that I had a job interview the next day and let him know my concerns and how I wanted it cut. Once again, he didn't listen. I think he is a nice guy, but people want a barber who is actually going to give you what you ask for. Even when you are the only customer there, he acts like it's a speed contest to get you in and out as fast as possible. If you don't care if he makes your hair extra short, then by all means, give him a try. But I will not be going back there. read more

Went with the BF to get his hair cut, went on Yelp to find someone with good reviews. Went with Fred's barbershop and it was a great choice. My BF is pretty picky with barbershops, but was getting tired of the 45-60 minute drive down to Westminster to go to his "regular" place. Apparently there are dozens of crappy shops out there (or girl salons disguised to cater to guys? somethin' like that) and he just wanted an old school regular barbershop that gave a good haircut. This place is off a larger street near the 99 cent store off Western, and when we pulled in we were greeted promptly by the owner. He seemed really friendly and skilled. I think he whipped out at least five different cutting/slicing/shaving instruments as he worked on my BF's hair. Anyway, my BF left happy with the cut, which says alot! For starters the guy is insanely rude. I felt like he left my hair uneven and asked if i may come back another time since he had someone else waiting for a long time and just wanted to be courteous. He refused and shoved my change back at me. Secondly, he insists on combing out your hair with gel still in it (I went to cut my hair straight after work and was on a very tight schedule) and even after i asked if he can soak it so the comb can run smoother with less hair pulling he still did not listen. Secondly, he uses a brush to remove loose hair that made out of harsh straw and is very irritating on the skin (Im no barber but i know there is softer brushes he can buy and if he doesn't have the budget he should've probably managed and prioritized his money to his business considering cutting hair is still partly customer service). I was able to look past all the comfortableness but shoving someone change back at them is extremely unacceptable in any professional business. If you have a bad day, do yourself a favor... dont bring it to your business then maybe you wont be so empty at all hours. read more

Damon is great. This was my second time getting my haircut from him. He definitely spends a great deal of time and made sure I got the haircut I wanted. Since I'm Asian too, he made sure to let me know the hair in the pic might not turn out the same way on my hair. I got compliments on my haircut the very next day. It's more than I typically spend on a haircut but well worth it because he's experienced, knows what he's doing, and didn't make me feel rushed. Been coming here for a few months now on and off. My girlfriend's sister is a stylist so sometimes I go to her so I don't get my haircut here religiously. However, when I do come here Damn(owner) always does a good job. He's very friendly and makes good conversation. You feel like you're at a friends house hanging out. And he is very quick, which is a plus if you can cut hair and do it very fast then that says something about your skills. A few of the other reviews complained that he was too quick and didn't give them what they asked for. I would suggest that you be sure to know what you want and tell Damon exactly. Bring in a picture of an example if you have to. Communication is the key, as with everything. All and all its a great place to get a nice clean cut that won't break the bank. The shop has all the original fixtures and makes you feel like you walked into a time warp back into the mid sixties!
