We caught the end of the season and this place and one other restaurant was open. Service was ok at both, but food was not.

Really good! I had the baked seafood platter/casserole and my husband had the pork shank. Both were very tasty with good portion size. The pork was certainly fall off the bone tender and the sauce had a spicy kick. I thought the rice and green beans sides were just so-so. The wait at 7:00 on a Thursday was about 25 min. There were lots of empty tables in the street side dining room but after our wait there, we were taken to the waterside dining room. Nice views and great weather on this early May evening. Many of the local restaurants are not open yet for the season, so we appreciate this place was open. Good service. Friendly waitstaff. The grand finally was the brownie sundae. Holy moly, it was good. Warm brownie and delicious ice cream. We were stuffed but ate it all, and I wanted to lick the plate. So good. I also highly recommend the J's Coco Margarita. After a day on the boat freedom cafe was a great place to float up, dock & grab dinner. Their menu has something for everyone, the seafood scampi was delicious! Although I ordered the steak tip dinner & my food arrived cold- Our server made it right & offered a hot chowder! The chowder was thick & savory, a real New England chowder! Yum ! Over all our party enjoyed our visit & the service. Great tequila sodas & frozen mudslide! Not going to lie you have to work on the mudslide on the rocks though. The stars are for the location and the drinks. We came here on a sat. night and both ordered the prime rib and added lobster. The waitress told us the lobster was great and very fresh. Our dinner arrived maybe 10 minutes later which was mildly suspicious . Overall the prime rib had decent flavor but the cut was meh. The green beans tasted canned or like they had been sitting in a container for hours and the lobster was no better. For a 16.00 extra charge each we were beyond disappointed. The lobster was chewy, dry and honestly just gross. I had never met a lobster I didn't love until I ate that stuff. Seated quickly and received our drinks quickly. Went downhill from there. Asked the waitress if the chowder was homemade. "No, but I've had some and it's good." So if it's not homemade it arrived prepared by someone else. My husband described it as, "Not good." He should have known better. We should have known better. We split a turkey and bacon sandwich. The bacon had not been cooked recently. It was the opposite of hot and crisp. Disappointing. We asked for no cheese. There were corners and edges of cheese in the sandwich, which suggests to me it was made earlier in the day and deconstructed to suit our order. The tomato slice was oh-so-very-sad. We came here last summer and had a great experience (5 stars), so we were very much looking forward to coming back this summer. We called ahead and were told that they do not take reservations for outside seating, and they recommended coming early, by 5-5:30, to get our name in. We got there at 5:25 and were told there was a 40 minute wait. That was fine, so we waited. We understand that places are short staffed due to covid, but after 1 hour and 15 minutes, we asked when our table might be ready. They told us that they seat all reservations first, which was strange because they told us they don't take reservations. To make a long story short, after much back and forth, we were then sat outside at a picnic table and within minutes it practically collapsed. The waitress was unfazed and said it had happened the other day and was bound to happen again. Not sure why they didn't secure it. We ordered our drinks and food, and the waitress told us the wait for the food is usually as long as your wait for your table - something we've never heard working in this industry for years. So she told us the food would be an hour wait and was unapologetic. We ended up waiting about 1.5 hours for our dinner. The food was good but not worth the almost 3 hour wait. The meat was over cooked and the sides were cold, but no one wanted to wait for them to fix our meals at this point. Again, the waitress unapologetic. We were really looking forward to our last (and only) meal out on vacation to be at the Freedom Cafe & Pub after discovering this place last year, but overall, we were very disappointed. After getting off a seaplane for the first time I thought it would be a great idea to get nachos... and boy was I right. I got nachos double stacked with chicken and these boys were thiccc. Like thicker then a bowl of oatmeal. LOADS of cheese and the double stacked option was good because it made sure no chip was left untouched. The chicken, salsa, and sour cream were all standard. Honestly if you want a lot of food I would get these no doubt. I'm disappointed in myself for not getting the guac... but that's on me. We went to Freedom Cafe tonight for dinner and left less than pleased. Service and food were just ok, nothing we would go back for. The real disappointment came from a man in his late 50's-early 60's who was helping out behind the bar, I assume he is a manager of some sort as he was dressed in regular clothes as opposed to a Freedom Cafe shirt like the rest of the employees. Went with son after looking forward to a guys night out all day. He got lobster roll with fries. I got Shrimp Scampi. We also took crab cakes as appetizer which were totally fine. Only Shrimp Scampi hit the table and smelled off, tried it.It both smelled and tasted of ammonia so sent it back and lost appetite..FYI 'The ammonia odor indicates spoilage.'' Son ate half of lobster roll and began to spit out sand saying he thinks he got a bit of clam in his lobster roll but definitely had sand in his food and we let the wait staff know about that as well. He also ordered fries but got Brussel sprouts or something green in a bowl instead. Not sure what's happening here but ended up paying after tip 62.00$ for sandy lobster roll,a beer and a soda. This is the tourist trap stereotype down to a T. The service is curt and haphazard. The food is mediocre at best. Some highlights: Waited 15 minutes to get a table after being told to have a drink at the bar. Waited 10 minutes to get menus. Had to ask to get water. Waited 30 minutes to get food. They seemed to have plenty of servers. Watched a server get into it with a customer who was sick of waiting and heard the server end it with "That's all I have to say about that". Overheard another customer who walked up to the hostess to say (with a desperate tone): "We just need to pay!!!!!" The nachos were bland and had a strange artificial taste. The lobster in the roll was clearly frozen. The burger was undercooked. They do have outside seating and seeing the beautiful lake is their saving grace. I went to The Freedom Cafe this past Saturday night with my parents and brother. We're from Massachusetts and were visiting for the weekend. Unfortunately, a lot of places on the causeway are tourists traps. The view from the deck was amazing, but the food and service was not good. This place has the most vegetarian options on the causeway and I loved that. I got the portobello sandwich and my family got burgers. It took about forty minutes for our food and the place was dead. The deck was full, but no one was inside eating and there were two people sitting at the bar. The food was barely warm and seemed to have been sitting out for a while. It wasn't bad, but not hot and there was almost no spinach on my sandwich. The mushroom was good, the feta was good, but the caramelized onions were weird and the spinach was nonexistent, not good for a vegetarian dish. I went here once during the Blues Festival and had a lot of fun. The inside bar area is amazing and the deck is great. Very touristy and I would say the lack of basic training the waitstaff exhibited Saturday that it can be considered a tourist trap. I know it's late in the season, but it's peak foliage season and the weather this past weekend was perfect. They should have had a barback and an actual cook on. Our waitress told the table right next to us that the bartender was cooking the food, hence the wait. Will probably only go back here for drinks. read more

I thought i would re-review What happened?! I was so embarrassed. My husband and I eat here often. We like it. Normally we eat at the bar and never have a problem. It is true that the food is not "out of this world" however it is always good (it is still a pet peeve of mine that they use sprinkled powdered cheese on a Caesar salad.. so sad). Two friends came up to visit and I took them here last Saturday. We decided to sit on the deck. We walked to the back and noticed it was not overly busy. We waited about 15 min for a seat but enjoyed a beer at one of their picnic tables out on the back lawn while we waited. We were then called and seated. That is it... we were seated and left and never saw anyone again. We finished the last few sips that were in our bottles that, thankfully, were already paid for. After about 20 min we went to find the hostess and let her know that no waitress had come over. At this point we are hot and the Reggae band was getting annoying. She said she would send someone over. We waited... another waitress told us that it had been assumed we had already ordered because we had beer (from the lawn) and that our waitress would be right over. At this point we decided to time it.. we pulled out our phone and watched the time.. 1.. 2.. 3.. 4...5... minutes.. still no one. That was the last straw.. we just left. Not sure if any one even noticed other than the other customers that were watching us. We did notice on our way out all the wait staff just hanging out in the A/C talking inside, guess we shouldn't have wanted to sit on the deck. We walked down to Rick's and had fantastic service. Bottom line upfront: tourist trap with poor/overpriced food and uneven service. We waited for the hostess for 8 min while staff casually talked just a few feet away. The dining room seating was only 1/4 filled just before dinner rush and no one had drinks or food yet. It looked like everyone was waiting to order with menus in hand. I wandered to the back deck to check it out while we waited to be greeted. The deck was only half filled with 4 4-tops open and a 2-top open. When the hostess finally came to her station to greet us I asked for an outdoor seat and she said she had a 4 party waiting list. Strange because there were 4 tables wide open and cleared. We decided to sit inside next to the deck. The inside was stuffy and smelled a little off so we asked our server if we could open a window next to our table 'sure' she said. We got a wonderful breeze from lake side and were happy for about 5 min before someone came from the kitchen walked over quickly and closed the window (within a foot of our table) without saying a word. I asked why she was doing it 'the ac is on' was her reply. Well the ac wasnt on in the guest area but upon leaving we saw there was a window unit in the kitchen - guess the cooks get ac while the guests sit in still smelly air next to a window on a beautiful lake on a 76 degree day. Food was not good and took a long time with only 1/3 the restaurant filled. My daughter got 8 ravioli smothered in a cream sauce for $16 and our burgers were underdone and bleeding on our plate. My son's Fish and Chips were OK but not great. On a positive note our primary server was nice and brought our sodas quickly. read more

Not sure why this place is listed twice on YELP, but.... We went there on 6/10/15, and sat on the deck to enjoy the lovely evening. The deck was overwhelmed by the smells coming from their dumpster which is placed on the under side of the deck. The baked haddock was dry and overlooked. The rice it came with this very dry and inedible. The sirloin tips which were supposed to be medium/rare were extremely overlooked and tough. We would have left or at least sent our food back, but because we were with friends from out of town, we chose not to tarnish our time with them. I am a Mainer, now a snow-bird, and have enjoyed this place in the past. But I have seen it go down hill for awhile now and this is the last straw for us! read more

This is a great spot with live music on weekends. Pull your boat up to the dock or walk in from the Causeway. Food and drinks are really good. We are usually outside under the tent during the day but had dinner inside one of the last nights they were open for the season and it did not disappoint. It had a really nice atmosphere. A wonderful spot with great views! Entertainment on the weekends is always an added bonus. Had a delicious lunch which consisted of Mimosas, Shipyard Summer Ale and a blackened haddock Reuben sandwich called "Rachel". I didn't leave a crumb behind! Cons- first time here: Sat outside on the patio which seemed like the highlight of the place since it overlooks Long lake.. what you don't realize is that the dumpsters are located right beside the patio. It smelled like dirty fish and trash as the breeze came through. Also lots of fly's at every table landing on food and people . Food was extremely bland and presentation was not appetizing. Drinks are over priced for the quality- strong with no balance of flavor. Pros- live band was nice and there is a section on the lawn where people had blankets and chairs out. OWNER SHOULD TAKE NOTE: you can't cut up dry leftover Prime Rib from the weekend, over-season it , probably microwave it, serve it as a $25 meal during the next week as part of a Bob Marley menu and expect a raving review. All 3 of us left it on our plates. Who's idea was this? Traveled an hour to order from the regular menu which was not available. Disappointing. Time was the only reason we didn't send it back.
