I wouldn't drive too far for the food, but service has always been very accommodating, the food acceptable, and the location is great. First, when we walked in 3 hours before 4th of July fireworks, we were told it would cost $10 to sit on the deck for the fireworks. We weren't planning on watching the fireworks so we we're disappointed that we couldn't sit on the deck. The drinks came fairly quickly but once we ordered, didn't see our server for the 40 minutes it took for the food to arrive. 30 minutes in, we asked for some bread for the kids but they didn't have any. The fries were decent but the rest of the food was just sustenance. The Black & Blue Burger just tasted like Bleu Cheese and was well done even though I ordered it medium. The Crab Cake Sandwich had little taste but reminded us more of Tuna than Crab. My son ordered the Basic Burger and enjoyed it even though it was over cooked. Taking this down a star after our most recent visit. The view is still great, but the food has gotten more expensive and the quality seems to be suffering. We had a good - not not great - plate of fried calamari that we shared. I had a pan seared cod dish that was good, but nothing to write home about. My wife had the lobster cobb salad. She was excited about it because it had lobster and avocados. The avocados were so under-ripe, if you threw them at someone, they would have left a bruise. I don't know how they got the pit out! The worst part is that for the small amount of lobster and the hard avocado, we paid $18!!! For that, she could have gotten a lobster roll that would have had far more lobster meat. Had a lovely meal. Chicken Marsala was wonderful. Tasty creamy sauce with mushrooms. My husband had a perfectly cooked rib eye with flavorful mashed red potatoes. Outstanding service! Food was red hot. Even with a 100 person wedding going on downstairs, a full deck and back dining room and a table of 9 next to us, our waiter timed everything perfectly. I was most impressed. This place has amazing service! My family and I brought a few picnic items and the cafe was generous enough to let us use their picnic tables on the side. Of course we ordered some things - a delicious classic clam chowder and a few drinks for our table. One member of our party had a little much to drink and wasn't feeling well - but the workers here immediately gave us the much needed attention, bringing cold towels, iced water and extra chairs in the shade. We are grateful for the service provided here! Even though we didn't get the chance to try any main entrees, drinks were good, service was speedy and friendly and the view by the shore was beautiful. Definitely the best lake view around, there is also a yard where you can walk down to a dock. Boaters can boat up to the restaurant or you can drive from the road. We got the spinach artichoke dip as an appetizer, it was warm and creamy, very tasty. My husband got the baked seafood platter it was very good, had good flavor, the only complaint would be that the scallops seemed like they were sliced in half and not very thick, I got the lobster mac and cheese which was delicious, you could taste the different cheeses and the lobster was on top so you got the full flavor of the mac and cheese. Well this place has a lot of potential, but I think it's squandered by a few things. One, what I assume was the owner openly berated what looked to be a 16 year old bus boy in front of the entire dining room. I've worked in restaurants the kid was doing a fine job in a place that wasn't even that busy. Two, again what I assume was the owner started talking to one of his friends (yes after yelling at the bus boy he stood around talking for about 15 minutes), whatever he was talking about involved a lot of foul language and was very inappropriate. Third, both my dinner guest and I got food poisoned. Normally I would not assume it was the restaurant, but we both got sick at the same time and don't live together... so all signs point to the freedom café. I was very disappointed with the food here. The service was OK but I ordered the fish Tacos which was not at all a taco. It was basically a flatbread with coleslaw mix dumped on it and some fish bites. Extremely hard to eat, dry and not good. My son had a Rachel which was OK. If I could sum up my dining experience here in one word it would be missable. Came in around 3:00 PM on a Sunday and were immediately flustered. We had a large party of 13 people and were shuttled towards the back by the hostess. Once we decided between indoor and outdoor seating we sat down and were told that they had a busy weekend and were out of chowder, chili, guacamole, and (wait for it) lobster and anything that had lobster in it. We are in Maine, a place synonymous with lobster and could not believe that this happened. It would be like McDonald's running out of beef! The table tents noted happy hour specials but we were told that we could not have them because they were only in the pub area. We politely asked since we were all situated if they could extend it to is but were quickly rebuffed by the server. She was polite to us in the way someone you know is secretly thinking the most condescending thing possible about you. While I understand they had a busy weekend and this person may be exhausted, remember this is NOT future customers fault. Perhaps one should relish in the fact that they reaped the rewards of that busy weekend by receiving tips (no pun intended but they were probably out of this condiment as well). Our food was ordered within five minutes of the time we were seated. After that we were in it for the long haul waiting over 45 minutes for simple burgers, salads, sandwiches, and fish and chips. It stands to reason that if you are out if so many other menu offerings things should come out quicker but that was not the case. During this obscenely long wait our server did not provide us with silverware so for a few minutes after our food was finally brought to us, we had to wait for instruments to eat it with. Several of the plates were quite hot to the touch which leads me to believe they let them sit under a heat lamp while they got their ish together. Some diners who clearly ordered well after us got their food before we did, which is the icing on the cake of this dining experience. Drink refills came sparingly. There were two occasions where the waitress was asked to provide a refill and it took over ten minutes to get one. Pricing was a bit higher than one would normally pay but that was somewhat to be expected because of the short tourist season. A few of us ordered burgers. We each had a difference preference on how we wanted it cooked yet they all came out exactly the same: well done. No pink coloring whatsoever for the people who ordered medium. They seemed to be the kind of form pressed burger you could buy at your local grocery store and not the type you would expect at a sit down restaurant. They were considerably smaller than the bun they were served on which was at this point to be expected. And only one ketchup and mustard for a table of 13, give me a break! Our saving grace was that among other things our server forgot to include the obligatory 20% tip for large parties. Some suggestions for management of this restaurant: 1. Utilize outdoor street menu boards to tell customers what you are out so that people can make an informed decision BEFORE they are seated. 2. Inform your servers that while times may be busy, you should be aware of the manner in which you address patrons of the restaurant. 3. Buy enough effing lobster. You are in a tourist area in MAINE for crying out loud. read more

The food was sub par, nothing to write home about (had the fish tacos), it was more like a flat bread with everything thrown on it, but for what you get the prices and portions are not where they should be. We came here on a nice sunny day to sit out on the deck and enjoy lunch. Rather then having us wait a few minutes for an appropriate sized table they squeezed 5 people in on a table for 2 in-between two other extremely packed tables. The live band was extremely loud and we asked for it to be turned down a bit but the waitress said no. Most everyone on the deck was elderly and everyone around was hunched over the tables trying to hear the person they were with. We ended up having to move to the other side of the deck because the garbage next to us smelled so bad. So we traded the smell of garage for hot air from the HVAC system being blown on us. The food was okay but the icing on the cake was how long we had to wait for our bill. The last person at the table took their last bite of food at 1:35 at 1:50 the waitress came over and we asked for the check. She never returned. At 2:10 we got up and went inside hoping to pay our bill. We asked another waitress for help but she said we needed to pay at our table. I said we have been waiting long enough we have somewhere to be at 230. She said "well I don't know who your waitress was so I can't help" and walked away. I've never been so close to walking out of a restaurant without paying. At 2:20 we finally paid. They clearly weren't interested in giving out a proper business. I understand it's tourist season but I've been to many tourists towns and they could all keep it together for a half decent meal. This is the first Yelp review I've ever written. If there was a rating below 1 star, that would be my selection. I wish I had read some of the other reviews before we decided to have dinner at the Freedom Cafe & Pub. The building is pretty cool. There's a great stonework fireplace. We sat inside rather than waiting for a table on the deck, overlooking Long Lake. The reason we decided to have dinner here was that our favorite restaurant was closed for the season. We were seated quickly. That may be the last positive thing I have to say about out experience. It took our very pleasant server several minutes to greet us and take our very simple (beer & wine) drink order. It took an unreasonable amount of time for her to return with our drinks (we were seated less than 10 feet from the bar) and take our appetizer and dinner order. After about half an hour, we hadn't yet been served our appetizers, nor had we seen our server. She served our entrees and observed that we had not yet been served our appetizers. She made some vague reference about problems with the kitchen. All but one of us told her that we were no longer interested in our appetizers since our entrees had been served. Clearly there was some kind of issue with her competence. My entree (onion rings and pulled pork sandwich) was cold. I informed her, and she returned it to the kitchen. She returned it several minutes later. My onion rings had been thrown back in the deep fryer and were scorched. My pulled pork sandwich had been microwaved. I really wasn't interested in waiting any longer, so I ate it. It was mediocre at best. Our server also informed us that the manager had taken the appetizers off the bill. Really? How generous of him, since we didn't actually receive them. He never came over to apologize for the abysmal service. We finished our dinners and asked for the check. That was the first item that was delivered in a timely manner. I hope she doesn't rely on tips to make a living...... Suffice it to say that we won't be returning in this lifetime. Yuck is the best word to describe the food here. My wife and I went in on Tuesday night and the place was sort of busy so when we entered the hostess warned us by saying the kitchen was "backed up". We should have turned around and left but unfortunately we didn't. When we sat down we looked around and no one was eating (another bad sign). I couldn't tell if it was because they were smarter than us and didn't order food or if they were out of better options like us and decided to wait for their meals. We both laughed at each other for ordering what we did...what were we thinking? Well we ordered a couple drinks and my draft beer was warm...nice! After a hot day in the sun it was just what I was looking for...a warm beer. Ugh! Well when our food finally did come out I wish I had about 4 more warm beers before seeing it because my lollipops looked more like little footballs rather than lollipops but that wasn't the bad part...the bad part was that they were grey...literally...grey! Like they had been sitting in water for about a week. They didn't have any sauce on them, no spice that I could see and they didn't show any sign or ever having been cooked (like sear marks or grill marks)...nothing! It was sort of scary to look at...definitely the ugliest looking meal I've ever had in my life. I asked the waitress for some bbq sauce which I put on one of them but when I tasted it I almost burnt my tongue from all the salt. I couldn't tell if it was the bbq sauce or the pork thing that was salty but I didn't care. I didn't eat another bite. I tried to wash the taste out of my mouth with warm beer and it didn't help. My wife's crab cakes looked ok but she said they were awful and for the next two days she suffered from stomach pain which she attributed to the crab cakes. Disgusting. When the waitress came back and asked us we wanted another drink we both said no and asked for the check which she pleasantly agreed to get us while she ignored the full plates of food we were throwing away. To make matters worst the meal came to over $80.00. I told my wife I'd rather light $80 on fire than ever eat here again. Disgusting. read more

Where to begin...? Every year my husband and I try the Freedom Cafe with great hopes that it won't disappoint us like it has in previous years. And without fail, it does. This weekend we went with anticipation that things would be better from last summer and they weren't. I ordered the salmon special which could have been delicious if it was cooked! As I was sending my fish back to be cooked, the gentleman seated at the table next to us sent his chicken back that was raw. Everyone knows you can't serve undercooked chicken! I will say our server was very pleasant and handled this with grace. My husband got a kick out of the fact that his BBQ bacon cheddar burger was served with two pieces of bacon (one on each side of the bun) and no BBQ sauce. Steak tips were cooked perfectly as were the pan-seared scallops with the most AMAZING pomegranate dipping sauce - who would have thought? Went there with friends last week. We had to fight off the flies for our food. The waitress said 'they come in with people when they walk in the door'. Really? Because I've walked into plenty of restaurant doors and never had to fight off the flies. It was disgusting! My husband and I have been to this restaurant three times. The first two times, the service was awful. The first time there, waitress didn't return with our change, which we complained about to a manager who did nothing about it. Then the second time, we sat on the near empty for 20 minutes before getting any attention at all. We swore that we'd never be back, however, because of the Blues Fest, we decided to give it another try. We sat upstairs in the loft area on the deck. We had an appetizer and a round of drinks. Our waiter, Dana, was friendly, attentive, funny and knowledgeable. We enjoyed hearing the band and the views of the lake. It was the highlight of our day. After finally finding entrees that were available we then waited over an hour for our dinner with almost no sightings of our waitress. When the food arrived we were told that one of the entrees ordered, in place of all the other options that were out, was improvised with another cut of steak since that too was all gone. That makes a total of 4 entrees out of maybe 10, that the restaurant was clean out off. Remember, this was a Tuesday night. My wife's fish tacos were inedible. So bad, that we refused to pay for them since she hardly had a bite. My son had the steak which was fine but the mashed potatoes and string beans tasted like cardboard. My daughter's raviolis looked like a bowl of pesto soup when it came out. If you're wary of this review and how negative it may be (possibly an outlier) think again. The table next to us complained more than us to the manager and waitress. Their food was terrible and had to wait an hour at least just like us. In conclusion, I strongly suggest everyone follow the rating of this restaurant. The one five star review I see here, that boasts the chicken marsala and service is laughable. Why? Because there is no chicken marsala on the menu. Enter at your own risk. We didn't leave until 9:00 PM. read more
