As a longtime Member One member, I chose to stay after the merger because I felt like VACU would take care of the members they inherited, and after the way they handled my previous issue, I do have more confidence in them. I'm updating my review because I have a couple of remaining concerns that I'm hoping someone from VACU can reach out to me about. First, I especially want to reiterate how appreciative I am of the assistance I received with my previous account issue. I experienced a hardship that unfortunately resulted in my account being charged off and closed. I take full responsibility for that happening. However, after hearing me out and reviewing the situation, VACU agreed to reopen my original account as a one-time courtesy, especially since I had previously been told by multiple people that it could be reopened. That meant a great deal to me, and I am extremely grateful to the very helpful lady who reached out to me and helped get everything resolved. There is one related issue that I unfortunately forgot to mention when she called me. The same people who originally told me that my account would be reopened also told me that the charge-off would not be reported to ChexSystems. However, it ultimately was reported. I want to make it clear that I'm not angry or upset with VACU simply for reporting it, and I fully accept responsibility for the circumstances that originally caused the account to be charged off. My concern is that I was specifically told that it would not be reported. Because of that, I would really appreciate it if someone could review the situation and see whether VACU would be willing to have the ChexSystems record removed as a courtesy, especially considering the circumstances and what I was originally told. I completely forgot to bring this up when the very helpful lady called me about my previous issue, or I would have discussed it with her then. I also have a separate concern regarding the online lending system. I recently requested a personal line of credit, and I was disappointed that the online system did not approve my request. I would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with a lending manager or someone who has the authority to manually review my situation and see if there is anything VACU might be able to work out with me. I completely understand that VACU has lending requirements and that I may not qualify for the amount I originally requested. I'm not asking anyone to disregard those requirements or guarantee me an approval. I would simply appreciate someone taking an individual look at my situation rather than relying solely on the automated decision. If the original amount isn't possible, I would be more than willing to consider a smaller personal line of credit, different terms, or another option that VACU feels would be reasonable. I'm willing to work with them to find something that works for both sides. The ChexSystems issue is also important to me because having that report has made it difficult for me to establish a relationship with another financial institution when I need additional lending options. However, I would honestly prefer to continue building my relationship with Virginia Credit Union anyway. That's one of the reasons I'm reaching out to VACU first and hoping someone will be willing to work with me. Overall, I do appreciate what Virginia Credit Union has already done for me. They listened to me when I had my previous issue, took my circumstances into consideration, and ultimately found a solution when they didn't necessarily have to. That went a long way with me and is one of the reasons I decided to stay. I'm hoping someone from VACU can reach out to me again to discuss the ChexSystems issue, and I would also really appreciate the opportunity to speak with a manager or someone in lending about whether my personal line of credit request could be manually reviewed. Even if the answer isn't exactly what I originally requested, I'm very willing to have a conversation and see if there is something we can work out. Thank you again to the people at Virginia Credit Union who have taken the time to listen and help me. I really do appreciate it.

Their customer service has been incredibly disappointing. They returned my SSDI direct deposit over what appeared to be unnecessary account issues, putting my livelihood at risk and causing needless stress. As if that weren't enough, they also held $200 from a deposit I made because of a hold they placed on a completely separate check. The entire transition has been frustrating and poorly managed. Instead of making banking easier, it's created one problem after another. I no longer feel like they value or care about their members.

Over five years ago, I opened an account with the Freedom First Credit Union at their Downtown…read moreRoanoke branch. Since then, they have given me excellent customer service, treating me like a member of the credit union more than just a customer like many other large banks do. Today, I happened to be in the Vinton area, and I decided to give their branch there a visit to check it out and to test the consistency of their customer service. It is conveniently located at 120 West Virginia Ave in a relatively small building but with a nice size parking and a drive-through as well. On the entrance glass doors, there are listed their days and hours of operation. It was decorated very simple with one open meeting room near the entrance and another enclosed with glass walls for more privacy. I noticed some literature was written in Spanish: "Encuentra tu Libertad con Freedom First." Which translates Find your Freedom with Freedom First. Another literature was about a relationship review to allow a credit union representative to meet with you to help you reach your financial goals. And yet another was about Freedom@Work. Helping businesses employees with financial knowledge. Just by reading these few literature one can realize that Freedom First Credit Union cares about people in the community. Their Mission is "Helping People Prosper- Helping Communities Thrive." At the back of this branch is located the main counter with their clerks ready to assist you with your business for the day. I approached the clerk on the left, whose name was Joshua, and he greeted me with a friendly hello and a "How I can I help you." I gave him my Credit Union Card and told him I wished to withdraw from my checking account $40 and would like it in four rolls of quarters. After checking my account in good standing, he asked me for my birthday to make sure it was me and relieve me from having to pull out a picture ID. He then had me sign for the transaction on an electronic touch pad. This was my first time in this branch, yet Jacob made me feel at home there, and this is something that I highly value about Freedom First. I have also used the service of their Financial Empowerment Center, and they have helped me with my setting goals, savings, investing, and improving my credit scores. I highly recommend Freedom First Credit Union for all those who are starting out to open a checking and savings account or who are not satisfied with their current bank or financial institution, and by experience, I can assure you that you will be better off because Freedom First truly has your best interest in mind.
