Super friendly John Mel is a blend of knowledge, experience, and service beyond comparison along with his family and employees that continues year after year. I repair & restore surfboards for a living. They have always supported me like none other. I recently showed up just after closing needing supplies. Grubby from fiber glassing and sanding, I looked a mess. Everyone was having pizza after their shift. They not only let me in to make my purchases after having closed out the days receipts, everyone there offered to help me whether they knew me or not and offered me some pizza as well. Freeline is my go to shop for surf gear, so naturally after I picked up a new board, I brought it in to grab a new fin. I am beyond thankful Anthony saved my new board from a disaster situation. He noticed a hole with the stringer showing as he was going to place the leash string before putting the fin in! I couldn't be more thankful that he noticed it and said something about it so I could take a picture to send to the shaper. Not that we ever have favourites (who am I kidding?! We all have favourites) but this place has to be my favourite surfshop in all of California. The guys in the shop are super friendly, very happy to help, always easygoing, and they've always given me a great deal every time I get too lazy to bring my own board and rent from them instead. They even gave me heaps of good advice when I bought my first board (even though I didn't buy it from them!) They'll even help you sort out roof racks for the boards if ever you forget your own racks, or you don't have one. Definitely give them a shout if you're looking to rent or buy a board. read more

I have been coming to this surf shop for years and always been happy with the service, but I recently purchased a surfboard from them and had an amazing experience. I was looking at the board for weeks, and they were never pushy for me to purchase. Awesome family-owned surf shop. Knowledgeable, helpful, friendly staff. Good prices. Good return policies. Good stock of suits, apparel, fins, ding repair/glassing supplies, and some quality boards too. You really don't need to be going anywhere else for your rentals or aforementioned supplies. They're only keep about 20-30 boards for retail (it's a retail store, not a warehouse), so if you're looking for something specific then you might have to shop around a bit, but they demo boards out as well. Overall freeline definitely does business the right way so I'll always go there when I need some help or some gear. And of course, always good to support local business! Alas! I've faced reality and given up my pipe dreams of becoming the baddest and raddest surfing momma there is. However, my kid, the natural, will live the dream for me. And this is where we start. At Freeline. Before we invest in some serious equipment we decided to go the rental route first. Rentals are reasonable for the day. $10 for wetsuit and $15 for a 9' board. Not bad. Rental rates are for the day, so the earlier the better however if you rent closer to closing time you can hang onto your rentals overnight. The fellas here are cool, never had an issue with them. Yes, they can be gruff at times, that's just the exterior though. They are actually nice guys. Couple of times they threw in free body board rentals. This is a family surf shop that is a landmark of surfing gear and resources right in the heart of some of the best and consistent surfing on the western NorAm coast. I've rented boards here to try something new, bought ding repair supplies, fin upgrades, wetsuits, etc. I can imagine it's tough running a retail shop these days especially during Covid but these guys have consistently gone above and beyond to answer questions and give helpful opinions on options in surfing gear. These guys are chill, let me rent surfboards from them twice. they let me know they needed to be back by 5:30, and even gave me advice which beach to surf at because it was high tide and it might be a little shady trying to come up another set of steps. The surfboards were fine for a beginner, and the staff were nice enough. $20 for an entire day's surf rental is a pretty good deal if you're going to be out more than an hour. read more

While there, I spoke with an older guy behind the counter and he was very knowledgeable about Coasta Rica surf spots and took the time to give me some info about CR and various places to go, eat and stay. Found this shop from a friend of mine that lives in SC. My 8 year old just grew out of his old wet suit and he needed a boogie board. As soon as I walked into the shop there was a great vibe. One of the sales girl asked us if we needed help and I told her what we needed. As my wife always buys his clothes I had no idea of his sizes. Three of the staff member went out of their way to figure it out and we had him in a new wet suit in no time. Spent some time looking around for a wetsuit that could fit me (I'm a rare size). Went to a few places on this past holiday weekend to see if I could not only find one, but take advantage of some sales going on. While I was greeted with pretty knowledgeable people at most stores, the conversation was short and sweet... Can't really help me... They don't make them... I won't fit it one... they can't even order it... Stuff like that. Until, I randomly found Freeline driving around exploring. This time as I decided to pop my head in, expecting the same conversation I had heard all day, I was instead greeted with not only experience and knowledge to teach me stuff I didn't know, but the willingness to help me actually get into a wetsuit, that no other store showed me at all . We found a size that is close, even had me try on a rental she had because there were no sizes close on the rack. After all that, she offered up her used rental wetsuit to me, because it was a rare size. She also said she can order them, which other stores said the couldn't. I ended up buying the used one and walked away with not only a nice wetsuit I've been looking for, for awhile now... But also a new hobby, a new love for this shop and the great service they provide. Visited the shop based on testimonials here on Yelp and it was fantastic. Tara, Mike and John Mel were all so helpful! Told them that I was a new to surfing and they all took the time to explain which board would be suitable for me. I was lucky to run into John and have him explain to me one of his 9'6 Freeline board. The board looked awesome/beautiful but probably too much for a newbie like me. It would break my heart to ding up such a nice piece of work. I would definitely get one if I got to be good. Tara and Mike also took turns and explained and recommended a few boards for me. Very unprofessional. Dropped my board off for a ding repair last month. I was told that it takes 3 weeks. A month later, no board. What's worse is that they don't even give you an updated ETA. We've been to this shop 3 times in the past month to rent for our kids... hubby has his own equipment so we only need stuff our children. It's become our favorite place to rent from, its conveniently located, their prices are good and the staff are helpful and polite--WITH ONE EXCEPTION. For this one particular employee, I am deducting 2 stars... one star for each time I've seen him be an a$$hole. The employee I am referring to is a guy about 60 yrs old with a mustache -- what a total prick! He assumes that every person who walks in the door is a moron -- and treats them as if they are. Just because someone doesn't own their own equipment (like my kiddos), does not mean they are idiots. Guess what old man... not everyone is a one-time customer. It pays to treat people right and build return customers.... that's how business works. After reading Florian's review I'm willing to bet that this is the guy who helped him. This dude's "holier than thou" attitude totally sucks... his snide comments and condescending treatment of customers would be the only thing to stop me from shopping here in the future.
