I needed to get new boards for two of my boys, and decided to try this local Santa Cruz spot. Guys inside were helpful, and put together two full deck setups for my boys at about $120 for all (decks, trucks and wheels). If there is any evidence of global deflation--this is a perfect example. When I was a kid (30 odd years ago), a full skate setup would cost about $100-$110. How have prices barely budged in 30 years? It is nice to know that I can put smiles on my kids faces without breaking the bank. (So long as they don't break these boards...then they're gonna hafta rake a bunch of leaves to earn a new deck...) This local shop had a really big selection, and thankfully all G-rated boards. Nice family safe shop! Helpful staff put the grip tape on cleanly, and importantly tightened the wheels correctly without busting the bearings. Will be coming back here for shoes and clothes likely. Shane and the crew at Bills Wheels were awesome. I came in for some pads to start my rollerskating adventures and Shane knew exactly what size I was and set me up with a whole kit. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. Masks were worn and other COVID policies looked to be in place. The shop has been around for 40 years and there's some great history in there (boards, photos, etc). They have the biggest assortment of Dickies I have ever seen. I didn't even know people wore them anymore. I had such a good experience that I came back the same day and brought my husband. He was able to find a wider than average skate deck and wheels no problem. read more

Best skateshop in Santa Cruz. Bill has been in the biz since 1977, he's a real OG. The selection of hardgoods, softgoods, and skate shoes are all great. It's basically the best skateboarding stuff you can get, all under one roof. Cool stuff to look at, like boards and memorabilia signed by skateboarding legends. Outside on the walls they do big graffiti art murals from local artists that changes every couple years. They have a relatively iconic wall of decks to choose from as well as a nice selection of sale decks on the floor. Different pricing options to bundle a deck with grip tape, trucks, bearings, wheels, hardware, everything you need and they'll set it up right there. Or otherwise you can just buy the parts you need. Independent trucks, spitfire wheels, bones bearings, santa cruz, creature decks, vans shoes, they have all the good brands in stock. A lot of the people who have worked there over the years have been sponsored amateur, flow, or pro skaters for various companies or shop teams, so you can get good advice from people who actually skate and have some authority. read more

I finally found some time to take my son and drive down to Bills Wheels. We didn't see Bill there because Sunday's are his time off for himself but I was told he's in everyday except on Sunday's. My son and I brought our boards with us- his more modern board and my old-school Tony Alva from the 80's. Walking in the shop and looking at the old boards on the wall brought back so many memories of the time when I was my sons age 11 and the thrill of getting my first board. My old board needed new wheels so I decided to have them swapped out including some of the truck screws. Amon did a great job replacing my tires. He recommended some soft black Peralta tires. Great suggestion!! I felt bad for the guy because he had to put some extra elbow grease to remove and replace the old rusty truck screws but did an awesome job managing to replace them as well as mount some nice bones bearings, oil the axles and add the wheels to go with it. We also bought some Santa Cruz shirts and my son added a few more cool stickers to his board and grab a spitfire shirt of his own. I wish I had met Bill again. After all, he put my board together almost 30+ years ago and my board is still going strong!! Great place, wide variety and selection of hardware and clothing, very knowledgeable staff. There's a reason why Bill is still in business. Before we left, we took a picture in front of the beautiful graffiti adorning the outside building wall. Skateboarding- it's a culture- an aura that makes Santa Cruz what it was and still is today and Bill brings it and breathes it. I'm glad he's still around. Hopefully next visit I can shake his hand and talk old stories with him about the old school days about his old shop back in Watsonville and finally introduce my son to him as well. read more

Not one employee acknowledge I walked in, I was looking to buy 2 boards and drop a good amount of money on them. They kept walking by me and watching me instead of offering to help. This places rules because it has a lot of old school stuff! But it gets 5 stars because: 1. even though I'm a girl nobody talked to me in that lame condescending way. like I am not asking for anyone to kiss my butt, I just wanna be treated with respect as if I had been born with XY chromosones 1a. like i am so used to the status quo of being talked down to by a bunch of guys without a clue, so when people talk to me like I'm human it makes me feel not crappy 2. I got awesome affordable Lizard King Wheels for my new skateboard 2b. they put my board together for me in a friendly nice way. 3. I didn't have to deal with any overbearing women who don't skate working the counter. over the hill those women can be a real drag. not having them pollute the space makes room for all sorts of great things! 4. I live over the Hill, where the skateboarding is not a five star experience. It is really cool to go to Santa Cruz and have these really nice experiences and be treated like a human being. 5. I don't feel like anyone pushed their agenda on me which often happens where I live. No infomercials, no get rich quick schemes, just a really human experience. If this continues I will go here for my skate needs when I'm not in the City. There were even little kids in the parking lot dancing by the cool graffiti on the wall! They are really old school with lots of cred too. You are likely to run into guys my age or older! I like that. read more
