I believe my experience here was prematurely sullied, which is unfortunate, because the coffee itself is fun and so is the place. When it came time to order, I was greeted with a scowl because my barista was having the worst day of her life and no one gets her. Look, I'm not responsible for your cramps from hell or that your expeditious tryst with Tom never lasted any longer than his fleeting boners. In a coffee shop, your milk-slinging gangsta credibilities may compensate for your lack of social graces but not in the real world, sista. And I get it, I'm easily overlooked in Fremont because I don't wear frumpy vintage clothing and I don't express all of my feels and personality traits through tattoo ink. I'm a fugly, Bellevue-living bigot in Fremont. It still doesn't excuse the major 'tude. Thank you for the morbid skull art. It really touched me deeply. I'd pass on the pastries, too. I really try not to come here every day. I can see it from my work out the window and it's just too tempting - Fremont Coffee is charming and delightful and exactly what I want when I need to step away from work for a minute. Can I get a witness on lady-with-parrot that's there every morning? She's a regular, fo'sho. They must have the record for least amount of barista staff turnover. I suspect many of them are artists as well - I secretly want to quit my desk job and trade lives. They make fantastic coffee, and are very friendly to regulars. It is kindof hipster, but there are usually cute dogs hanging out on the porch so that's no big for me. read more

Recently I decided that I don't give Fremont Coffee enough love. Or business. I live in Fremont and frequent a number of local businesses and just spend a lot of time in general there. If I want quick service, I duck into Cafe Ladro. If I want to daydream and watch the boats go by, I venture down to Canal St. Coffee. If I'm waiting for a bus, I'll step into Starbucks. (Don't hate. I love Starbucks.) Really, my coffee need has been filled, at least as far as Fremont is concerned. But Fremont coffee? Lovely. Just lovely. The coffee is good and fairly priced, the baristas are friendly, the space is cozy and the deck is great. They have yummy food options. Clearly they need to be a part of my regular routine...along with all the others. Perhaps they can fill the "it's raining and I want to read my book and drink coffee but Ladro isn't cozy enough for sitting and reading and Canal street coffee is too far away right now" shaped hole in my heart. Fremont Coffee is a cozy, homey neighborhood coffee house serving good coffee. Their foam art is amazing when you order a latte. I got a snowman one time and a ghost another time. So fun! I used to come here quite frequently when I worked and lived in the Freelard area. My co-worker and I had a regular coffee happy hour to relax and debrief about all the f'd up goings on of our workdays at that time. Fremont Coffee Company, in a cozy converted house right across from the also-good Ladro, provided a welcome respite. The baristas were adorable and friendly, and crafted tasty regular and soy lattes which we accompained with perfect biscotti, delicious quiche or moist banana bread. This lovely cafe is great in any season, but is especially wonderful in summer, when you can share deck space with a few dogs, their owners, and random birds. This place simply rocks. read more

I had a really bad experience here. I asked the barista to use less milk in my breve because I like a stronger coffee flavor. The staff played the "I'm a barista so don't ask me to change my art." game and instantly went to level 10 condescending. I tried asking another way, nicely, (can you make it dry?) and then I got the perplexed look, slumped shoulders and the "20 questions tactic". That's when the barista "starts from the beginning" and asks questions that convey how utterly annoyed they are you with you. He asks "Do you mean a double shot of espresso?" I reply, "No, just a breve with half the milk you usually use." Now his head is reeling, stupefied he asks: "Do you want a macchiato?" I gave up at this point and asked for a double espresso with the milk 'on the side'. That pretty much ended the conversation. So I gave up, it wasn't worth the hassle. The barista made the drink he wanted and filled it to the top with milk. I paid for it, said "Thanks" and started writing this post. A good barista likes to please their customers. Some even like to try different things to make their customers happy. I've had some who have created new drinks when I ask "What do you recommend?". That's fun because a skilled barista has a lot of ways to make a drink delicious and I'm happy to participate in the experiment. I just wanted to warn people to avoid the crappy service, mediocre drinks and superiority complex. Try ETG down the street. The coffee is better and the baked goods are OMG delicious. read more

I purchase about 8 to 10 espresso drinks a week at various coffee houses around town, and until today, Fremont Coffee was one of my favorites. Their coffee is great. Their venue is unique, comfortable and spacious. What sucks is their customer service. I've overlooked it to this point - trying to support a local business - but today was exceptionally bad, to the point that I won't return. To Fremont Coffee - I want local business to flourish, but you've got to deliver on both product and service. Good coffee is not enough. Most companies spend a lot of time and money trying to get a customer to walk through their door. Cute spot, coffee pretty good, unfortunately the staff ruins the experience. Yet another case of unhappy people passively letting you know they're not enjoying their work. I now have a reason to be in this area at least once a week and thought I found the perfect place to hang in b/t appointments. And it would be, if it weren't for the attitude you get from some of the staff. I'd be willing to give the benefit of the doubt, if this wasn't the third time in a row someone came off as indifferent or downright irritated. I have to wonder: Is it the staff, or the owners? Are the staff poorly chosen, or are the owners treating the staff so badly that the staff is taking it out on the customers? Today's interaction seems sadly typical: I order coffee and a savory pastry. Barista asks if its eat in or to go. "Eat here and is it possible to have it heated?" She says yes. Since I frequent coffee shops with small pastries or sandwiches available, and since usually once the food is heated someone brings it to the table, I say, "I'll be just outside the door around the corner". I say this assuming that if there is no table service, that she will let me know. Instead she said "uh ... ok". I go outside and meet my friend, and a half an hour later the irritated barista sticks her head out the door and says, "your quiche has been sitting on the counter for a half hour. I was going to throw it away, but I thought I would come out here and let you know first." Like she's doing me a favor. Like people make it a habit of paying for food with no intention of actually eating it. Now, I don't /need/ table service, but a little bit of courtesy would be nice. I think it's pretty clear if someone points out where they're sitting and you don't do table service you could maybe let them know? Failing that, when you are not that busy and someone's food has been sitting on the counter for 10, 15, 20 minutes, maybe you clue in at that point and want to let them know? Instead, the barista came off as if I was putting her out to have to come tell me, and as good as threatened to throw my food out if I didn't come get it. Also, come to think of it, she came straight out the door to me, so she clearly remembered where I had told her I'd be sitting. Would it have been that hard to bring the quiche with her and hand it to me? Really all it would have taken in the first place was for her to say "I'm sorry but we don't do tableservice here. I can't leave the counter, so check back in 10 minutes and your food should be ready." read more

So I go into this coffeeshop today, order a turkey sandwich for nearly 8 bucks and a large americano for nearly 3 bucks. Ok, so far so good. I see a sign that says after two hours you need an internet code from a receipt to continue using the internet for free. I ask for a receipt and the guy tells me I don't need one, but that if after two hours I end up needing one, to come up and he'll give me one. Well, after 2 hours the internet stops working and I go ask for an internet code. The lady says I have to buy something to get the code. I tell her I already bought over $10 worth of stuff. She tells me to just buy a water. Tell you what I'm gonna do instead, I'm gonna buy my coffee and turkey sandwiches from a different coffee shop from now on! 2 hours of internet ain't gonna cut it. This coffee shop is so hip it hurts. And the weight of that pain must be almost unbearable. Well, at least that's what I'm gathering from my recent visit when the stylish barista was in so much hipster pain that he acted very put out by customers who disturbed his space by placing orders. Weighed down by the ton of hipness, he moved at a glacial pace, setting what I consider a record when it took him 8 minutes to make a latte. So customer service is pretty much nonexistent. Then again, you don't really head to Fremont for efficiency. That said, the slowest barista in the world also made me one of the better lattes I've ever had. For no other reason, Fremont Coffee is worth visiting. And the ambiance is just amazing. The cafe is set in an old house with worn wooden floors and bright red walls. It's warm and welcoming and a great place to warm up if it's cold and rainy. If it's warm and the sun is actually out, Fremont Coffee has a great porch to sit on for people watching. Bottom line: It's a five star cafe minus a star for obnoxious customer service. read more

I've been in to Fremont Coffee Company quite a few times and the coffee is great. The service is snooty and sometimes downright rude. When I find myself (usually a rabid over-tipper) tipping less and less, I know it's time to move on. I get when people get busy, it makes it more difficult to have a pleasant conversation. However, when it gets to the point where it's basically grunting and shoving my coffee at me like I'm a nuisance and not saying "thank you" as I'm paying, there are other places where I have a better experience. Finally, the food is great, but I had a weird experience with a fly in the glass food display cooler. I was buying something beautiful and tasty and there was a fly in the display cooler that landed on the food I was buying! They brushed it off and still gave it to me. Eesh. A friend and I were meeting for coffee and were originally going to go to Canal Coffee. But we accidently took a left at Albuquerque and ended up at Fremont Coffee. And it turned out to be a nice change of pace. The coffee shop is a converted house and has a small little porch with park bench-type seating outdoors. Inside, the front room is a little larger than you expect and the counter is to your left. When you're standing there talking to the baristas in the doorway and picking up your beverage, it has the feeling of being handed a drink just as you're walking into a party. Nice relaxing vibe. I was feeling adventurous and had a vanilla latte which was excellent and my friend had a cappuccino which was deemed good. I wasn't paying too much attention to the type of coffee, but I think it's Lighthouse. There also were Mighty-O donuts, beer and piles upon piles of pastries. There was some sort of chocolate croissant that I didn't buy, but will probably dream about every night until I do. The house is arranged with narrow doorways leading to multiple smallish rooms. It's set up in a circle and we ended up wandering around the place twice before settling on a table. As we saw a few other people do that during our time there, I think they deliberately set it up as a type of indoor roundabout just for entertainment value. They do have free Wi-Fi and several computers are also scattered around the house. There's also a deck which is probably fabulous during the summertime, just a bit less-so on a rainy March day. All-in-all, it's a pretty nice choice for coffee and the multiple small rooms are a nice touch. Even though there were a fair number of people there, it didn't feel that crowded. Also nice that they allow two hours of internet use, but you can use it longer if you purchase something else... don't know how stringent they are about that, though. Couple downsides... not enough comfy seating, I think I noticed two chairs in one of the back rooms. Second, it almost has a library type feel, I wandered around, looking for a table to work at, and was given looks walking into each room. Uncomfortable! Hence the 4 stars instead of five. This is one of the most creatively designed coffee shops I've ever seen. There's seating for every kind of coffee talk you'll ever want to have. Want to cuddle? Intimate room with love seats. About to break up? Intimate room with bar stools. Want to study? Two rooms with enough seating for you and your entire study group. And when you just feel like enjoying your coffee alone, there are enough rooms and seating arrangements for that, too. What I liked is that while I waited for my friend, I sat on their property on their bench for almost an hour, and no one told me to "order something or leave" as some venues would say. It was 90 degrees yesterday, and indoor seating got pretty warm, and even as the place was getting pretty crowded, we were still able to navigate to the patio and comfortably seat ourselves. There's less privacy, but it's a fair trade-off for staying cool in a peaceful environment. The coffee is good, too. read more

Very nice local feeling coffee shop. Being honest it feels like you're walking right into somebody's house right when you enter. But I honestly kind of liked that. The ambiance was very homey, and felt like place you could spend some time either drinking coffee and catching up with someone or working on your laptop and getting some focus time in. No idea what all the hype is about. Baristas apathetic at best and plain rude at worst. Don't snap at me, barista. I'm from Austin so I understand the plight of the hipster barista as well as anyone. I know you have artistic dreams that are being crushed like those fair trade coffee beans. But don't take it out on me. Mine are being crushed by law school and I just want a latte to numb the pain. Music was very loud and the bathroom was not very well maintained if you know what I mean. There was a sign in there that said "let our friendly staff know if bathroom needs help" but friendly staff were in sadly short supply. Besides the point, but my chai also was sub par. Best coffee shop in Fremont. Hands down. This is a beautiful old house with beautiful old wood detailing, cozy rooms, and a wide front porch overlooking 36th street. The coffee is consistently delicious and fairly priced, and their homemade desserts kick that dry piece of Starbuck's pound cake to the curb! The true star of this place is their gorgeous, spacious wrap around patio with a fountain and lush plants. Upon first glance I would sum up the Fremont Coffee Co to be a place Hemingway would go to. This assumption was based entirely upon looks. But while I am on the subject of aesthetics, Fremont Coffee Co does paint a nice picture, unless a person is handicapped. No wheelchair access and a few steep steps to climb with rails spread far apart to get into Fremont Coffee Co can mean hindrance for some. Walkways on the wrap around porch are narrowed by the presence of rattan chairs. While this could be a breezy situation for some, and I observed plenty of people enjoying this set-up, it should be noted that the layout of Fremont Coffee Co, inside and out, is not convenient to all. The goods in the case are dry. The quiche looks like forgotten leftovers in the fridge. New food that looks like old food is not at all appetizing. The iced mocha I ordered was tasty though. I believe Fremont Coffee Co. uses Lighthouse Roasters. Lighthouse is very similar to Vita's but with less of a dominating flavor and more of a pleasant one. Wine and beer is offered and guess what? So is a little 'tude. I gather that all of the people who work at Fremont Coffee Co. know each other quite well and most likely hang out together outside of work. A customer comes second to conversations about last night, so and so, and the great song playing on the radio. Rock out at work, fine, whatever, but um, don't snarl at the customer when you have to stop discussing the latest KEXP play list to do your job. Anyway, I went out of my way to meander through the converted house's rooms. It is a cute concept and repurposed spaces amuse me. Love the houselike layout of this place and the coffee was good both times I have been here. Wifi didn't work outside on my first visit, but it did once they reset it. On my third visit, wifi didn't work well inside. Moreover, the place stinks sometimes!! On my second visit to this place, the stench was horrible. One of the guys working on his laptop coughed a lot, another ate greasy chicken that didn't help the smell, while people kept visiting the restroom so I think that also made the smell worse. Let me just say that this place is adorable! My gf and I made a plans to study at different coffee shops once a week. She picked this place just to try it out and we found a new favorite place to study. Its nice and quiet which is great. There is three separate open rooms with desks. There is free street parking but if you continue to the next light and turn left (the shop should be on your left hand side) there is an alley right after you take the turn on your left hand side with back in parking and there are tons of open spots! And you can go through the back entrance. I'm not to big on coffee so im not an expert on sharing my review for Fremonts coffee. HAHA but when I do drink coffee I keep it simple @ white mochas or caramel machiato's. The coffee was good nothing to special. Again I'm not a big coffee drinker. lol OH! And I forgot to say that they serve beer! I love to drink beer but obviously who wants to study buzzed? haha This place is unique really cool decor. So if your looking to study somewhere to get away from and don't want to go to a boring library and sit at home, I recommend this place. :) read more

I'm not a huge coffee nut but as a writer I spend a lot of time at Fremont coffee shops. Far and away my favorite place to go is Fremont Coffee. I love sitting on the porch in the comfy seat against the wall, splitting my time between writing, sipping coffee and people-watching on 36th. The staff is extremely friendly and if you go often enough they remember you and what you like to drink. Internet access is pretty good. Every so often I have an issue but not that big of a deal. My favorite moments are when I'm the only one out there on the porch and either a bird jumps on the table to say hi or the mouse pops up from under the deck to look for crumbs and hang out. read more

Great space, great ambiance. Coffee is strong, haven't tried their food. I use their computers and 4 hours are free with a purchase. Punch cards get punches even if I use the internet, unlike Online Coffee on the hill and downtown. Americano refills are only $1. This place is just about perfect. The old house lived in feel is how I like a coffeeshop to be, kind of like the old Espresso Roma on the ave. The staff are all nice and unassuming. Regina is very nice. Their counter could use a redesign, with the register before the espresso machine and a serving bar at the end, sometimes it get's crowded by the register because that is where they also set the finished drinks. I never use their outdoor seating but they sure have a lot of it, with a big porch on the side and in the back. It would be a great place to take a first date for coffee. Great place! Came here out of necessity after seeing the Troll. As it tends to do, the Seattle weather acted up on us and we had to find shelter quickly. This old house turned coffee shop was nearby so we ducked in. Fair selection of coffees and teas. My wife and I thought ours was hot but nothing special. Service was curt and felt a little unwelcoming. Seating inside looked cozy but very crowded when we were there. Plenty of covered outdoor seating though. This place is an old house that was made to be a coffee establishment. It's nice to do work here since the spaces are so varied, so many wall partitions that separate spaces, but all cozy. With that said its patrons are hungry for power, mostly UW students and their laptops, so in peak hours you'd be fighting for a wall-outlet table but more often than not its not an issue. I also have to commend the art on top of my drinks, props to the baristas for being so talented. So yeah, the coffee is okay, I mean other than the password being KillYourComputer, and having literally every single patron inside using their computers, nothing gets my eye rolling here...I give this place a high score for its straight up service and the shop being cozy and well maintained. read more

I'm writing this review because whereas there are hundreds of coffee huts, joints, shops and houses in Seattle, many of them with very good service, quality coffee and lipsmacking pastries, I've reached the age where my patronage is limited to probably two dozen because I don't like loud music in a daytime business and I don't like to pay for parking just for a 20-minute coffee visit. I like my order to be heard, and don't want to yell at someone a foot away from me. If the barista crew can pull a shot on an espresso machine they have all the skills needed to adjust the sound on a stereo. On the off chance there are people over 35 in Seattle who like strong brew but mellow background, I suggest Fremont Coffee. Outdoor covered seating, homey atmosphere, outstanding foam art, quality roasts. Four stars because it's in Fremont where parking is hard to come by. read more

As far as the setup goes, this place is awesome. I love the hollowed out rooms with chairs & couches. I dig the chairs on the front porch. And I'm a huge fan of the outdoor area, especially when the weather was as lovely as it was when we visited. I could have spent all kinds of time there just relaxing, so I can see how it'd be an appealing work or study space. Sadly not a fan of the coffee, or at least the coffee I tasted. I ordered a Cafe Caramel, but it was extremely bitter. The taste was almost indicative of it being scortched & a friend's drink was very similar. We didn't order the same thing, but we may as well have had the exact same drink. Strange, indeed. The staff was great - very nice & fast. The only downside here was that I had to repeat my order 3 times to the same barista for some reason. I have a pretty loud voice, so I'm not sure what the deal was, but she was super friendly, so no biggie. Maybe I just hit it on an off day, but I was pretty disappointed. Well, T-Mobile thankfully trashed that fave-five concept... but I just watched the commercial on YouTube so this is my jumping-off point. I LOVE Fremont Coffee and this place is verging on 5-stars and becoming my new home, despite the fact that I live in Dub Sea (I'm trying to get more people to call West Seattle, dub sea. Sorry. Just accept it). But this place is so. freaking. quiet! And, usually, you want that, right? But what's a huge pro turns out to be a slight con for me -- there are so many cute, cozy and quiet little rooms in this converted house but they are quieter than a library. Then you become that guy who's creeping in with an Americano filled-to-the-brim trying to put it down while eloquently inching out my laptop from my bag -- all so as not to disturb the hibernating bear. But enough Mindy Kaling thoughts for one review. On to the oodles of greatness about this place The old charm of this home is exquisite. The door handles, the walls, the lights, the atmosphere is all beyond warm and inviting. The cozy and spacious seating is also definitely a bonus -- if you have a group, try to score a room (there are lots) because there's no big tables in this place. The front porch is my favorite lazy spot to people watch. The coffee (I forgot what we were reviewing for a sec) is delicious. The espresso drinks are all highly recommended, and they have vegan/vegetarian food from that place whose name I can't remember. The one w/the yam/kale wrap & tofu sandwich. The bathroom is freaking fantastic. It's spacious, clean, charming and I've been more than a little tempted to use the shower. So aside from my awkward hands, I highly recommend this place.
