This shop has the cutest logo ever! It would be neat if he had an ice cream scoop for a hat haha. The staff was kind enough to let me sample the ice cream I wanted and a spare cup for my friend who took his ice cream to go. Parking was empty so I didn't have an issue there I really enjoyed the lemon lavender the most - the balance between the two worked out so well. My friends didn't like the taste but I was all in. (I got two of these!) The peanut butter mud pie/salted caramel pretzel shake. The salted caramel bits went so well with the peanut butter like I was in a festival and enjoying the fireworks. The vibes were that of a cozy ice cream shop with all the fun and joy on the walls.

Pleasant experience here! The workers were really nice and welcoming when entering the icecream shop. Good portion sizes too so I would say worth it. We got the honeycomb flavor which I really enjoyed. I loved the small bits of honeycomb that was in the icecream. They also have a lot of other fun flavors to try too. The interior design is also fun especially the blue light up sign. Small space with limited seating but seems like most people come get their icecream and eat outside of in their cars.

Cute shop and friendly service! I visited French Custard after a long day at the zoo and appreciated the calm vibe. I had a kid's scoop of strawberry stracciatella, it was good, not overly sweet, with a creamy texture.I'd return to try a few other flavors. Great stop for a treat on a hot KC day.

We're almost officially back in ice cream season, so had to shoutout one of our favorites: French Custard, perfectly woven into the neighborhood and popular Trolley Trail. This whole little strip has seem a revival, with Cafe Corazon (coming soon 2025) and other businesses opening their doors here recently. For all the old KC ice cream aficionados out there, this spot has some overall similarities to the defunct Glacé on the south Plaza. The flavors here are unique but don't try too hard. Highlights have been a Biscoff Blastoff flavor with those good little gingerbread cookies you get on Delta flights, a dark chocolate toffee, and banana pudding with bits of blonde Oreos inside. It's rich and so flavorful, a little goes a long way IMO. On the first warm evening of spring, we walked the dogs and kids down (chaos!) and I tried a Ritz Toffee flavor that was insanely tasty. Good service and size scoop, too. We are in the habit of walking down here, butit seems to have enough parking right out front as well unless you're there at a peak time. One nice development is they have added a concrete slab with some seating out front which makes the whole experience better. They seem to always have one somewhat off-the-wall creative idea, while still featuring tons of classics and staple flavors. Local neighbors will naturally be drawn in here, but if this isn't your neck of the woods I still recommend going out of the way to try it out!

I visited French Custard last night after dinner and was pleasantly surprised. The taste and variety of flavors are not like any other ice cream or custard shop I know in Kansas City and it instantly became my favorite spot in town!!!! They offer unique flavors like London Fog, Lemon Cake, and pistachio brittle, really creative and refreshing. My husband and I sampled many before deciding our flavors. He chose the Strawberry S flavor and absolutely loved it. Since I'm diabetic, I went with the blueberry lavender basil sorbet, which had less sugar and a flavor I've never tried before -- surprisingly delicious! The shop is in a cozy Brookside neighborhood with a few businesses nearby. The staff was friendly, explained everything clearly, and offered plenty of samples to us. They also sell half pints as well of a few flavors they offer and we saw a lot of people stopping in just to grab those. If you're exploring ice cream or custard in Kansas City, this place should definitely be on your list.

This is probably my favorite ice cream spot in the city. The ice cream is always soft and they have such creative flavors. I also think their partnerships are so much fun, especially the local ones. The scoopers are always so friendly and happy to hand out as many samples as you want. A kids scoop is usually perfect for me. Even on a busy night, it's quick through the line. There's limited space, with only a few tables inside and outside. I've sat on the curb before. I'm so sad they took my favorite flavor off the menu, long live mocha mudslide!!

Y'all don't sleep on French Custard. This place had been on my list for a long time and in a summer effort to eventually check it off my list, I ended up here with a friend in the later months of summer and was so happy this was the ice cream shop we selected. First of all, Kansas City is not wanting for great ice cream shops, there are several winners across the metro and I didn't even know we needed French Custard until I came here. I was delighted to find this ice cream to have unique and rich flavors that really made it stand out from competitors in the city. It was quiet when I was there so I was able to ask some questions and sample some flavors, finding out that the honeycomb flavor was a staff favorite and filled with their homemade honey candy - ummm you had me at homemade candy. It was insanely good and unlike anything I'd had before. It's in a bit of a hidden area of Brookside right off the trolly trail so it's perfect for an ice cream break while out enjoying a nice KC day. I'm honestly already looking forward to my next excuse to visit.

I stumbled upon this super cute ice cream (custard) spot between brookside and the plaza. Morningside??? This quaint little shop gives all the feels. Owners Alex and Jess are super friendly and knowledgeable about ice cream. The portions are very generous. Lots of flavors to choose from. Actually it's difficult to narrow your choices to just 2. Limited seating inside and outside. Surface lot makes finding a parking spot stress free. It's also very close to the walking trail so if you have guilt you can walk off your calories. The flavors change monthly. This month I'm in love with honeycomb and salted caramel pretzel. Other flavors worth trying are goey butter cake, peanut butter mud pie, biscoff blastoff, strawberries stracciatella. Wait. Who am I kidding they all are delicious - it just depends on what you prefer or what you're craving at that moment. They also sell ice cream cakes, a custard flight (yum), floats, shakes, and a scoopwich - custard stuffed between 2 cookies. There's options for everyone: dairy free, gf, nut free, chocolate and fruity; cup, waffle cone, sugar cone or cake cone. And the prices are reasonable.

Such a great ice cream spot in Brookside! They make all of their custard in house and it's delicious. They have some seating outside and some tables, but there's also a walking trail outside, so lots of options to eat there at take it to-go. The service is very friendly and welcoming. You're able to taste flavors you're curious about, which was great. We will definitely be back!

So I'm surprised it took me this long to write a review. We stopped by the River Market location last night, and one of the quickest ways to judge a place is simply to look around. There was a line of people waiting to get in and others lingering outside, happily working their way through whatever they had just ordered. That's usually a pretty good sign. A few years ago, Betty Rae's closed its shops, and there was real concern that the brand might disappear for good. Then Matt Shatto of Shatto Milk Company rode in on the proverbial white horse, revived the brand and began expanding it again. I clearly need a few more visits to work my way through the flavor options. When you first walk in, you'll see wooden blocks displaying flavors. Those are just some of the classics that are always available. The big menu behind the freezer cases is where the real decision-making begins. And if you can't decide, the staff is more than happy to let you sample your way through the case. As someone who considers chocolate chip cookies and cookie dough their own food groups, I went with the Cookie Dough. What stood out most was the texture. It was incredibly rich, dense and creamy, almost closer to frozen custard than traditional ice cream. My niece, who is a far more experienced Betty Rae's customer, swears by the Lavender and Caramel combination. I'm not sure I would have ever put those two together, which is probably another reason I need to go back. And Betty Rae's is about more than what's in the cup. The River Market shop has a comfortable, funky personality that fits the neighborhood perfectly. The servers were exceptionally friendly, and even the music is part of the experience. You can find their playlist on Spotify. Great ice cream. Fun place. Terrific people. And apparently, I have a lot more flavors to try.

I love a lot of spots around the metro, but let's be honest, some of them get crazy busy and you end up waiting in line for a while. That's not a dealbreaker, but with a summer of social distancing, it's nice to have a spot like Annedore's that is tucked into the neighborhoods, has outdoor seating, and is never too busy. Their gelato is so good, and the service is friendly as it gets. We've made a tradition of walking up here as a family once a week, and together we've ordered or sampled: Cookies & Cream, Birthday Cake, Mint Chip, Chocolate Chip, Coconut, Strawberry, Berry Sorbet, Vanilla, and Lemon Basil. All are great (not crazy about the birthday cake one my kiddo always gets), the Berry Sorbet and Lemon Basil are standouts on a hot day. Their portions are generous, prices are very fair, the outdoor seating is great, and it's a very clean shop. Oh, and I recently discovered that macarons are delicious, and theirs are some of the best around. They're around $2.50 a pop and well worth it. I cannot recommend this place enough for gelato, macarons, and of course chocolate if that's your thing. Want to skip lines for ice cream (well, gelato) this summer and still support local?
