I finally tried Frenchy's! The foodie that I am I needed to try it. It has been hyped and hyped and over hyped and it did not live up to the hype. I had the 5 wings with a side of greens. The greens were good I enjoyed them. But the chicken, it was just not giving what I was expecting it to be. It was fresh but it wasn't giving like omg the best chicken ever. I had an amazing experience with Frenchie's restaurant in Houston--even though I didn't dine in person. I ordered through DoorDash while staying at a hotel, and I was genuinely impressed that everything arrived still hot, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. The manager with the tattoos on his face was everywhere--helping customers at the front counter, assisting in the drive-thru, and professionally handling multiple customer complaints, all while keeping the operation moving. What stood out the most was his ability to stay calm under pressure and make sure every customer left satisfied. It's not often you see a manager lead by example with that kind of work ethic, professionalism, and dedication. Whoever he is, Frenchy's should do everything they can to keep him. Passing through downtown Houston near the University of Houston, the smell of Frenchy's Chicken literally invaded my car -- so I had no choice but to stop. The drive-thru was packed, so I parked, ordered online through their website, and went inside to pick it up. The line inside was just as long as the drive-thru, but they have a pickup window just outside the dining area for online orders, which made things easy. I went with the chicken tenders, dirty rice, and a strawberry Fanta. You really can't go wrong with Frenchy's. The food has been consistently good since way back when I was in middle school. Even though this location moved a block from where it originally was, that Louisiana Cajun flavor hasn't changed one bit -- and clearly neither has the demand, judging by the nonstop lines. Funny side note: I was on a call with a friend who moved from Houston to the U.K. decades ago, and when I showed him my meal, it literally brought a tear to his eye. First time visiting this location literally across the street from U of H. My first impressions are that it does robust to go business via drive thru. We wanted the full experience so we dined in. It is a walk up counter and there is a kiosk to place your order. The attendant is very quick to get your order and very knowledgeable about the menu. She asked me what chicken I preferred on my campus combo. I didn't know you get a choice and this was very generous and thoughtful of her to ask. I knew we were here for the chicken and some other goodies I know they do well! I had red beans and rice as my side with the 2 jalapeno peppers, sweet cornbread, and added boudin egg rolls and didn't want to pass up the peach cobbler. I love their chicken here because it is unique with a light coating of fried breading that is seasoned very well. I am sure the ingredients are a secret lol. The food took a while to come out and it was pretty busy at lunch. The interior dining space is small and there is plenty of outdoor seating. A friend suggested that I try this fried chicken since I was new to the Houston area. I went through the drive thru and 2 lanes were in operation and I still waited 30 minutes The lines were long. The attendant, I forgot the name, was very stellar and talked that location up so well. Very cheerful. The chicken was very flavorful and tasty. It has to be in the top two of the best fried chicken I've ever had. The crunch was top tier. It was fresh and the temp was still hot. Learned of Frenchy's on You Tube from a Texas vlogger. I loved the history and said we absolutely must visit when we are in Houston! Undecided, we ordered chicken wings and fish to share, with greens and red beans and rice and a corn muffin. The greens were cooks well but a big too vinegary. Red beans were bland and the bean to rice ratio was 80/20. We were accidentally given dirty rice (I couldn't recall if I made an error until I checked the receipt) and Chiya quickly replaced the dirty rice with the red beans and rice. The dirty rice was gummy and very bland. Then corn muffin was chewy and no hint of sweetness. The chicken and fish? Perfection! Fried to the tee and the right amount of seasoning. I do prefer chicken that has been de-feathered (see pics). I know it's cheaper to purchase but I did remove the feathers before consuming the chicken. The person taking the order in the parking lot was ungroomed standing in the parking lot with a heavily soiled (flour stains) Frencheys hoodie on in 90 degree weather. He was taking orders all where you couldn't even see the menu. I asked him could i pull up to see the menu. He just looked at me as if I asked the impossible. I went to school at TSU so it was in my rotation in college....To my surprise, the location moved as it appears the church next to the original location got even bigger so that whole block changed....back to the food, the chicken was as bomb as it was when I was in college 20 years ago. I ordered the 5 wing meal deal with french fries....I also asked for biscuits but they don't sell biscuits anymore!!! As much as it was a major let down that they stopped selling their delicious biscuits (w honey!) the chicken was as tasty as ever and the fries were perfectly seasoned. Frenchy's makes some of my favorite fried chicken. My first time trying it was to grab some chicken to enjoy at a park... we never made it to the park. We ordered or food to-go, and then decided to devour it on the patio while it was pipin' hot. It was perfection. I was worried the batter would be over-salted - and it was not. It was crispy with the right amount of spice and peppers. Only thing missing was Big Red. This particular location is direclty across from UofH; it has a drive-thru and a whole 'lota parking. I first visited Frenchy's while dropping off my niece for her first year of college before heading back for my long drive home. I saw this small building with a long line. Back then, in 1902, it was only one location. But I do remember the chicken as having its own flavor and being very tasted, and to be honest, I haven't come across a crispy chicken and dirty rice since that tastes like Frenchy's. So, today, it was nice to go back down memory lane. The food was the same, very good. But what I don't remember is the college being directly across the street from Frenchy. I think maybe Frenchy moved down the street in front of the college. But, anywho, the chicken was good, and so was the dirty rice and greens. I love the cornbread, too. I'm in Houston and I had to try the popular Frenchy's Chicken! It is all what I heard about! And Beyoncé bragged about it highly in her recent renaissance film, so I had to try it. The food is so delicious made fresh and fried to perfection. Just very good! It's good to try other fried chicken and how they are prepared. This place has a variety of fried foods like shrimp, chicken, and fish. The service is good and they will tell you what's good and what to order from the menu. They are pleasant and patient while ordering. They call your name and order number when you order is ready. I recommend the chicken for sure and to try the shrimp and fish. I may have to go back before I leave to try it! The chicken was that good! And the prices were reasonable for combos. It's very nice inside and updated. It's plenty of seating outside and indoor. Very spacious and clean. The downside however, is that they do not give out hot sauce, only peppers , which will increase the spicy level. The greens were bland but cooked well just needed salt or hot sauce added to it :) Overall, it's a lot of parking in the lot and gets very busy with long lines. Came by Frenchy's after tutoring at the nearby library. I've only had it once since moving to Houston, back when they were in the old location, so I figured I'd see what the new spot is like. First impressions: the building looks great from the outside and was clean inside. There's a nice outdoor seating area, though it was empty during my visit. I skipped the always-long drive-thru and went inside instead. It was clean and had music playing, which added to a slightly loud but lively vibe. One thing I noticed was a sign that said something like "We focus on coaching, not counting." I learned that they don't accept cash payments--card only. The idea is that managers should focus on developing the team instead of being stuck in the back counting coins. I actually really liked that philosophy, but honestly, the front-end team could still use a bit of coaching. Everyone looked neat and uniform, which was a plus, but the cashier seemed a little distracted and not super polished. I ordered two 5-wing meals with fries and dirty rice. Fries were solid. I didn't try the rice (my mom did), but the chicken was just okay. It tasted like it had been fried in old grease. Not terrible, but not that signature flavor Frenchy's is known for either. Overall? The staff was fun as we cracked jokes to lighten the mood. They were professional and very informative to us newbies. They helped us out and decided to go with The three-piece combo as well as the five-piece wing combo. The cornbread was subpar and the greens and Mac were good compliments. The big surprise was the Boudin balls, a.k.a. egg rolls with boudin. Started off with just two and the server joked that I'll be back for more and she was right. Prior to leaving, I placed an order of 4 (which is a total of eight) to go and share with friends or family back at the house. Also grabbed a slice of Sweet Potato Pie and Lemon Cake for the road.
