Recommended by a friend from Memphis. The day we went, (there were 7 of us). First of all, this place has its reputation built already, and my review will have no impact. Nice cozy place, perfect setting for fried chicken. I am sure they had other stuff, but that was the mission for this visit. Started with fried pickle spears, probably the best I have ever had, no joke. Perfect coating, taste and preparation. I like the spears vs the chips. Had the special which was to legs and two thighs for the price of the 3 pc dark. Beans and slaw. Ok, the chicken was great, moist, seasoned, very well cooked. I will go out of my way to go here for the chicken. Beans, canned with a little flavor added, nothing to brag about the slaw was pretty good. The fries on my friend's plate looked great. Perfect. We got here at about 1145, the place was busy. By 1215, it was packed, but they move people through and do a booming take out. Try it, you will like it. It satisfied my fried chicken desire and. Best lil chicken place in the heights! All the chicken had a lil kick to it which makes it da bomb!!! Fried pickles come in spears and they are perfect with ranch but be careful and let them cool otherwise you might burn your mouth. Everything is made fresh here, the greens are perfect and the Mac n cheese is super nice. Definitely had the coolest vibes and table service or order at the counter to take it to go. I've been to Gus's plenty of times now without reviewing it somehow, time to fix that. TL;DR the chicken absolutely mogs most fried chicken places by a wide margain, everything else on the menus exists. The chicken is battered and fried to an almost glasslike crispy exterior, it's extremely moist on the inside (especially with the dark eat options) and the seasoning is terrific. There's a bunch of the classic garlicky goodness and the heat level is spot on, you feel it, but you're never overwhelmed by it. I won't harp on the sides, nothing really stands out good or bad so just pick the things you like. Or just do what we normally do and eat a ridiculously large amount of fried chicken. read more

We tried the Half Chicken with Fries and Mac n Cheese as the sides, and our friends got multiple portions of the 3 White Piece Chicken. All of them were really good! The chicken skin was so crispy while being very flavorful, the meat inside was juicy and tender. The fries were crispy and well seasoned. Parking was easy to find, but the lot is pretty small and tight so getting in and out takes a little patience. The chicken was definitely the star of the show. Super juicy on the inside, perfectly crispy on the outside, and seasoned just right. Exactly what you want when you're craving fried chicken. We were a table of 8 and were seated immediately. The staff was hospitable. We had our 50/50 sweet/unsweet tea that was still pretty sweet. I cannot imagine the straight sweet tea. Unlimited tea! I got the 3 piece tender with greens, mac&cheese and side of ranch to drown out the spiciness. I am weak sauce when it comes to spice level. But I powered through it because the flavor was good. When I get to a location, I often look for comfort food and fried chicken is among them. I found "Gus's world famous fried chicken " and was comforted by everything. They have an on property parking(not a ton but enough so you're not driving the neighborhood hoping to find parking). They are in an area with houses as opposed to a plaza or strip mall. The restaurant atmosphere is great, lots of wall art, small and big group tables (full of guest enjoying their food). My server was friendly, happy and had a helpful demeanor. I took her advice on the dessert and wasn't disappointed. I ordered: Fried Okra- crunch bites of goodness ! Diet soda- normally I don't mention this but they provide soda in their own souvenir cups, which of course I took with me. 3 piece dark meat meal- with slaw and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese has a sprinkling of spice which was unexpected but awesome. The dark meat also had that hint of spiciness in every crunchy, juicy bite. Chocolate chess pie-which I've never heard of let alone had...was a bite of chocolate goodness! (Not too sweet or too bitter). July 10, 2025 Came in from Galveston to try this infamous fried chicken originally from TN I got the 3 pc tender plate with baked beans, slaw and Mac & cheese with sweet tea The chicken fingers were large, extra crunchy and juicy. They were seasoned good, a tad spicy even. Served with fresh crunchy coleslaw, sweet baked beans and thick creamy mac & cheese. Everything was delicious. I got a piece of homemade coconut pie to go. The pie is really sweet but it didn't taste "homemade." The sweet tea is like how your Mamaw makes! Our waiter, Xavier was the nicest waiter you'd ever meet. Now I do love fried chicken even though I try not to eat it that often. Today I went back to Gus' Fried Chicken after about a year. Not because I didn't like their cooking but because I enjoyed it too much. Well today I decided to treat myself and I was not disappointed at all. My husband and I came when they had the Memphis special for $15.25. It came with 4 pieces: 2 legs and 2 thighs with baked beans and slaw. You can sub sides for just an extra .50 per side! I don't know the last place I've been to that costs less than $2.00 to sub a side. I subbed for double greens because I was trying to be healthy. The fried chicken was fried perfectly crispy and juicy. The only thing was that the pieces of chicken could've been a bit bigger. I've bought bigger pieces of chicken from HEB. So for the Memphis special the 4 pieces were just right. You can't beat under $40 for two people before tipping with the Memphis special. The service was good and our waiter was attentive. My husband and I are on our health kick so we'll be back when we're craving fried chicken again in a month or so. read more

What a great spot buried in downtown Houston. This was our first time trying Gus's on the recommendation of a friend. The stag is friendly and inviting. The restaurant is clean and well maintained. We both ordered the Dark meat two piece meal. My wife got beans and coleslaw. I got mine with beans and Mac n cheese. The food was delicious. The chicken had great crunch and flavor. So why only four stars? Unfortunately the thigh my wife was served wasn't quite cooked all the way through. There was some blood at the bone joint. Definitely coming back for more. read more

When you see an old, non-descript restaurant without any fancy flashing signs or lights being full on a Sunday evening, while the fancy yuppie shops across from them are sitting empty, you know they're cooking something good! This is a sit down and wait for someone to help you kind of place so it's not fast food. The young woman waiting our table was absolutely great and refilled our drinks several times. I'm being serious here, she was treating us like we were dining at a 5 star restaurant. Their fried chicken here is pretty spicy but not overbearing. The best thing about it is how crispy they make the outside without overdoing it with the batter. The spot has limited parking, but one can possibly score parking along Washington Ave. There's also parking behind B&B next to the train tracks if you're really in a pinch and can hoof it a bit. That said, we've always managed to find a spot pretty close to the door. Food & Drink - 5* Chicken and sides all bring the flavor one would expect. I recommend keeping it traditional and go with bone in or at least mixed. Sides are great, never disappointed, though I personally come here for the protein! Service - 3.5* This is hit and miss in my experience but in it has never been terrible. Sometimes they're a little slow to take your order or sometimes the food takes a little bit longer than one would want but it's well worth it. Pricing - 4.5* Subjective but I think the pricing is good for the portions received. Overall - 5* I would rate this 4.5*. If you know Houston, I'm sure you know a few of the other go to spots but if this one isn't on your list, you're missing out. This spot, at least for me, is one of the best in Houston. So I have been here a few times. The last time I visited was horrible. It was about 2:30 pm so they were not busy yet it took about 10-15 minutes for anyone to address us. Once we finally received our food it was pretty disappointing. First thing I noticed was how dry the mac and cheese was before even tasting it. When I did taste it it was horrible. There was absolutely no cheese pull when you tried to grab once piece of pasta it all came together because the pasta was all stuck together. I can always count on Gus's famous chicken for fresh, fast food, incredible service, and great vibes! This location is our favorite because of the outstanding service. My fiancé and I have our usual order now, which consists of a three-piece chicken wing, macaroni and cheese, and baked beans for him, and a two-piece dark chicken, okra, and baked beans for me. Why did I disappoint myself in this establishment? Waitress did not acknowledged us for about 30 mins after seating ourselves. Then It took forever like 45 minutes to get my drinks. I ordered water and root beer float. By the time I got it the Ice cream melted and the root beer was warm. It took another 15 minutes to get our food. Don't not order the Green fried tomatoes because they are not fresh and tomatoes were gooey, but had a great crust. Collard greens and coleslaw on the sweeter side.
