When a cocktail and an entree usually add up to like $30 a person, BYOB is always where I am hoping we end up. Luckily Freppe's makes it fun by serving up the margarita mix if you bring along the tequila. Done! Freppe's ended up being the perfect spot for a little lunch, and not just the DIY margaritas. We had perfect weather so sat outside on their patio, had a really lovely waitress taking our orders, and served up some pretty delicious food. I got the mahi mahi tacos and they were pretty great. Lots of fish and the verde salsa had so much flavor. I think the fish was just a bit overcooked, so I will probably try something else on my next visit, but still loved my meal. We got some churros for dessert and oooooh man they were good. Piping hot and filled with a caramel or dulce de leche sauce that was so tasty. Perfect cap to to a great meal. We'll be back! We were looking for a new place to try out for Cinco de Mayo this year and wanted to stay close to home as the weather wasn't spectacular so I did a quick search and found this gem. We got there a little before 7:00 without a reservation and they were pretty busy as to be expected but after a short wait of about 10 minutes we were brought to our table. Now the place isn't very big but they were also using their upstairs party room for seating this evening. We were greeted by our friendly server who took our drink orders (it's BYOB) and provided us with a complimentary basket of chips and salsa. After looking over the menu I decided on one of my favorites a Chicken Chimichanga which comes with rice and beans (I subbed black beans for the refried) and Hubby went with the Steak Asado which is a grilled ribeye w/ garlic & a creamy brown sauce with a touch of tequila which comes with rice, black beans, and sautéed vegetables. When the food came out it looked delicious. My Chimichanga had the most delicious salsa verde on the side... I wish I had a gallon to bring home. The chimichanga itself was crispy and the filling was very flavorful and well seasoned. The beans also well seasoned. My hubby thoroughly enjoyed his ribeye and shared a bite with me. It was very well cooked and tender and the sauce it was topped with was very tasty. He said we are definitely coming back here. We took note of some of the other dishes that people were dining on and they all looked very tempting. They also offer table side guacamole with a cute little cart they bring around. So all in all a very successful Cinco de Mayo dinner and we look forward to returning to try some of their other delicious offerings. We definitely recommend you get here ASAP! read more

My family and I were in the mood for Mexican and I happened to find good reviews on Yelp for Freppe's! There is parking in the rear of the restaurant, we walked in through the back and were seated right away. Cute little place looks family ran and operated with a party room upstairs. We started with the sampler appetizer and glad we did. It was so good and enough for the of us 4, it had wings, flautas, wings, & cheese quesadilla. My husband and I shared the Mocajete AMAZING!! Never had veggies mixed in the Mocajete, but to be honest it is a great addition. Portion is huge we both had lunch for the next day! My boys had the Birria tacos and chipotle creamy chicken and shrimp they were very happy with their choices. The only thing that was a little disappointing is the wait staff is more like teenagers so not very attentive; however, for the quality and flavor of the food I'll deal with it. I've always lived near Freppe's but only tried their food yesterday and I'm disappointed that I haven't tried it sooner because I loved it. Living in CA for the past 5 years I would like to think that I am picky when it comes to Mexican food since SoCal has some of the best other than in Mexico. But Freppe's is a great option here in New Jersey and not super Americanized like other spots I know. I came in hoping to order take out while I sat at the bar enjoying a margarita. But when I arrived I quickly realized it's BYOB and they DONT sell alcohol. I know for next time! I placed an order for some tacos and their quesadilla and the food was made in a timely manner. Our waitress was also very kind and sweet. When we got home and dived into our food I had the birria quesadilla to start and it was very flavorful. I had some of their spicy and hot salsa and YUM! It was very similar to what I've had in SoCal. The tacos were pretty good too. I liked the steak better while my mom liked the shrimp better but I love that they use double corn tortillas and keep the tacos very minimal. This was more than enough food for my mom and I and I'm excited to return again. Only thing to improve upon I would say would be the packaging of birria options. Started off walking in to practically no air conditioning in the middle of July. The restaurant is run by teenagers, not one adult was working besides the chef who only spoke Spanish. We got free chips but they were definitely old and stale. We got the appetizers sampler and unfortunately empanadas were really dry and were served without a side of sauce. Sodas were also flat. I'm new to Plainfield . I saw this place and immediately wanted to try it. I love Tex Mex, I checked out the reviews and gave it I try just yesterday. I must say the staff was very nice. We placed a to-go order shrimp tacos, chipotle chicken and shrimp and cheese quesadillas and churros. The bill was $65.00.. little high in my opinion. The food was bland and cold. We live a good 4 minute drive from the restaurant and the rice and beans were ice cold when we got home. I was hoping this place would be as good as the reviews. I was extremely disappointed. Came for the curbside pickup. The staff was friendly on the phone, even though they were pretty busy on a Friday night. We got quesadillas, which were tasty but could have used a bit more cheese. They came with plenty of toppings, including guac. That's important because the guac price is over $2 a side for a normal condiment cup. Probably not worth the extra charge at that portion. Went to Freppe's for takeout dinner at about 6:30 p.m., and told the person taking my order several times 'no onions,' because I'm allergic to them. She told me that the peppers in the fajitas dish that I was ordering were already mixed with the onions, so, great - thanks for telling me that. I let her know, "Then no peppers and onions, because I'm allergic to onions and I can get very sick." I get the food home, and what's in my food? Peppers and onions. I called the restaurant, and they offered me an $8.00 credit. I explained to them that I wanted a full refund because I couldn't eat the dinner that they put onions in when I told them several times that I'm allergic to onions. They told me to come in again and they'd make me another dinner. Um, the reason I came to get takeout and didn't cook dinner was that I'm exhausted working since 7 a.m. I asked again for a refund, and the female on the phone told me she didn't like the way I was talking to her and hung up on me. Unbelievable, horrible customer service. So, no dinner tonight except for a piece of cheese I had in the fridge. I will be calling my credit card company to reverse the charge. UPDATE: The next day, I called Freppe's to speak with the Manager. The employee who answered the phone told me she would check to see if the Manager was there, put me on 'hold,' came back and told me the Manager wasn't there. She offered to take a "note" from me so that the Manager could call me back. When I asked for the Manager's name so that I'd know who would be calling me back, she still wouldn't give me the Manager's name. I asked several times and, again, was refused. I feel this restaurant is hiding information that should be freely given to customers, and I can't understand why they're so secretive. I went online during this insane phone call and found out in about five seconds that the Manager's name is 'Kathy.' When I explained this to the employee on the phone and how easy it is to get the Manager's name, and she confirmed finally that the Manager's name is 'Kathy,' I said that at "your restaurant, this is information that should be available to customers." She then became more argumentative and started parsing words, saying, "It's not MY restaurant, I just work here." In sum, I find it unbelievable that a restaurant would treat customers like this. We are never going back. UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: After I got off the phone with the employee in the 'update' above, I got a phone call. It was Kathy, the Manager. I found out she was calling me from home on her day off. Apparently, the employee I spoke with must have called her, told her I was livid, and gave her my phone number. Kathy is very nice and very reasonable, and we had a great conversation. She knows she has an employee issue, and we discussed what it's like getting good employees for a restaurant that doesn't serve alcohol (it's BYOB) since COVID. Waiters make more money at restaurants that serve alcohol. The employees at restaurants like Freppe's are 14 years of age for a busboy, and 16, 17 years of age for a waitress/waiter. I completely understand that they don't understand customer service at that age and when a customer is reasonably upset. Kathy offered me a refund for the dinner we couldn't eat last night. She had heard an incomplete version of what happened with our meal from the employee last night who answered the phone, and she understands that there is either an inability on her employees' part to communicate, or a reluctance when they get something wrong and don't want to take responsibility for it. I would probably go back (but not for takeout, only dine-in) because we've been there many times before and the food is really quite good, but I'd be concerned that my order would be gotten wrong again and I could become very ill if that happened. I honestly wish restaurants could resolve the employee issues they face now, as well as the rising costs of food. The last four years in this country have been hell. Scotch Plains is a pretty elite demographic, so maybe the people in this area aren't really feeling it as much. I really hope we can get the right leadership for this country going forward in the upcoming election, because small businesses are just being killed in this economy and still reeling from COVID which was funded by the 2008 - 2016 administration. And, Kathy the Manager was great when we spoke - but, not sure I'd go to Freppe's again because the distress of this whole ordeal was very hard on me. I now have spent my lunch hour today trying to resolve this and in total over an hour of my time on this, when all I wanted was a refund because they got my order wrong. I have a bad taste in my mouth in spite of the fact that Kathy seems like a great Manager - but she's working with employees who are entitled and very unprofessional, and I don't think I want that experience again. read more

Honestly really sad to be writing this review because I've had good dining experiences here in the past- but my pickup experience today was disappointing. I arrived a little after they told me my order would be ready, and it still was in the process of being cooked. Had to wait an extra 10-15 minutes, fine, things happen. When I get home I realized they got the order wrong, even though the girl who took my order on the phone repeated my order back to me so I know it was written down. Then when I open the food, the tacos were soggy, completely falling apart, as if they'd been sitting in the container for quite a long time. After many visits I'm going to settle on a 3. Food quality has really declined since the first visit. Maybe it was a lucky first, but who knows. I'm going to call this "Americanixed" Tex-Mex, because it's definitely food for people who don't want flavor or spice. Most dishes I've had were very bland, almost no seasoning beyond salt were used, from what I could tell. Fine for some people I'm sure, but not for me. Portion sizes are definitely reasonable, but the quality of the food doesn't justify the amount. From dried out pieces of chicken, or hard beans, burritos smothered in oily cheese over undercooked tortillas, I've been saddened by many meals. That weren't all that inexpensive, either. Unfortunately what makes this difficult to write, is that some were just right with a lot of extra hot sauce, but many were really sad and inconsistent. I don't know, but I'm very conflicted. Staff here have always been friendly in my experience, so at least there's that. read more

My family has been going to Freppe's for years and it's one of my favorite spots to go when I'm in town. They have an outdoor patio for when the weather is nice, it's a BYO, and the food is great! In my opinion, the appetizers are where it's at. There are often some interesting specials, but my regular favorites are the Tex Mex Sampler and the Queso Fundido (with chorizo, peppers, and onions) -- which is basically delicious melted cheese. In the sampler, the pineapple chipotle wings (they're not spicy) and quesadilla are my favorites. If they have it (sometimes they sell out!) I recommend the Tres Leches for dessert. read more

GUYS - please come here. Hands down one of the best Mexican spots I've been to in a while. We came here for dinner Friday night. I have to be honest my expectations was that it was going to be a Applebee's type with generic Mexican dishes. Boy I was wrong. The food was delicious and plentiful.
