Was driving on "H St" on a Saturday night and saw the sign for this spot, found parking right in front. Walked in, the decor is not the best. The place needs some artwork or paint to livin it up because the food is fantastic. It has that "carry out" feel so you feel like grab the food and go. I chose to eat in since no one was there. (I think that when people see people eating in and they are not familiar with the place they are willing to give it a try. Next thing you know more people started to arrive.) The server was super nice friendly and explained each dish with great details. The food was prepared rather quick and well presented at a great price. When I first moved to DC this was my go to Mexican place. I am an avid margarita drinker. Wherever I go and I see a Mexican place I must try their margaritas. My first week in DC I was walking down the H street trying to get familiar with my neighborhood and after walking 15 blocks up I decided to turn back down to this place. One of the appeals was they had a nice sidewalk seating area called Fresca. So I walked into the place and told them I had a dog and will be sitting outside since no one else was outside. It was mid October and the weather was still really nice. Immediately after my introduction a sweet young girl came running outside to take my order. She loved my dog and asked to hold her. I said sure. Meanwhile she took my order. She took care of me entire time and I was the only one outside. Excellent customer Service and was vigilant that I wasn't in need of anything very frequently although the inside had about 4 tables busy with folks. I had 3 carnitas and they were tasty but I was disappointed they were not fully loaded like I am use to in NY. They only had the meat, cilantro, a wedge of lime for me to sprinkle on top and parsnip slices. I had a regular margarita and it was kick ass! One of the best I've had. Later that week I returned just because I really wanted one of those great margaritas again. This time it was the evening, no dog with me so I can sit in the restaurant inside. Keep in mind there is two sides to this place. Front is like a fast food taco joint, back side Fresca is a formal sit down restaurant. So I went into Fresca and sat down at a table. This time it was a much older lady. Probably as busy as the last time I was there sitting outside. So I noticed that my "waitress" was really the bartender. The sweet young kid that had served me the time before. She was behind the bar cranking out drinks like a pro. My new waitress came gave me the menu and I told her I wanted a margarita and will order food after. 20 minutes later I still had no margarita and the waitress was just hanging around. I got fed up and got up to tell her I was going to sit at the bar. She can bring my drink there. I waited long enough. When I sat at the bar I introduced myself to the sweet young kid. Her name was Christina. I told her thanks for great customer Service the previous time but I just moved to the bar because I have been waiting for my margarita for 20 minutes. So she looks back to the area where she sends out drinks for pick up by waitress and my drink had been sitting there waiting for me. She shook her head an apologized. The margaritas were on point with perfect mixology blend of the alcohol, lime juice and whatever else they put in there. I returned two other times and learned my lesson to not sit at a table because the other waitress was horrible. I kept seeing customers complain about the slowness. One of the last times I was there she had Lenny the owner behind the bar. I speak Spanish and could understand what he was saying to her. The kid did a superb job and he was just demeaning to her the entire time. He had her under a microscope. And even started to make margaritas at one point. I happen to have one of his margaritas and it was horrrrrrrrrriiiiibbbblllleeeee. I saw him make it. And he was skimming on the alcohol and basically giving the Customer lime juice and everything else but alcohol. When I tried it and it was atrocious I sent it back and told him he needed to get out of the bar and let the pro continue to make the drinks. He yesssed me to death but I could see where this was going. Micromanaging and cutting corners to save money, and reduce the quality to the consumer. Couple weeks later I brought some coworkers for happy hour. Lenny was behind the bar and because I didn't want to be rude we stayed for one. But boy was it a big mistake. Margaritas were horrible. We had one and walked down to Impala Mexican restaurant and gave them our hard earned money for good drinks. A week later stopped by again and asked when is Christina going to be in and was told she had been let go and Lenny was behind the bar now. So I walked out. No thanks, I don't want lime juice. Last weekend I stopped by to the front part of the restaurant and ordered 2 carnitas tacos. They were inedible. Both tacos were filled with fatty remnants and very few pork meat. It was gross. I threw each bite into my napkin I was so disgusted. To make matters worse I got a Mexican soda and I had a hard time opening the bottle on the stupid bottle openers that they have nailed to the wall. So I asked the lady behind the register to help me. Only with the biggest attitude did she come from behind the register to open my bottle of soda. This place has lost my business. My favorite item on their menu is the shrimp empanada. It's fried to a perfect crisp. I'd also recommend their guacamole (please note you need to order chips separately! They do not come with the guac) - it's a lot less bland than the guac across the street at Whole Foods. Please note that the ambience is pretty casual. This place was pretty disappointing. We ordered chips and salsa ($5), and the amount of salsa did not even fill the already small container halfway. The salsas had good flavor, but there wasn't enough and the chips were very stale. We would have asked for more, but we couldn't get anyone's attention. We also did not get any water, utensils, or napkins (which were wrapped around the utensils). Finally, our table was dirty, was never cleaned off (our server placed our menus on top of the mess), and the person mopping was also the one serving the food. I was going to give 1 star, but the tacos are quite good. Tortillas were authentic and the seasoning was on point. I'm honestly surprised that this place doesn't have a higher rating. Finally checked out this taqueria in my neighborhood. Coming from Mexico, Texas, and California, my standards for tacos are pretty high - and the tacos al pastor definitely met the standards. The place is family-run, the food and preparation is authentic, and, like any good taco, it ISN'T overpriced like a lot of the higher-end Mexican places in DC that will give you the same quality (or worse quality) taco. I also decided to try one of their cheese pupusas - I was skeptical since, as most people in DC know, the best Salvadoran food is in Columbia Heights. However, I was decently impressed - not as great as some other places I've had it at but this is the closest place to get pupusas for me and I will definitely order it again when I'm craving it. Had the bad luck of coming here during the H street festival - avoid this restaurant at all cost. This restaurant is like a bad ex in that it will gaslight you and steal your money. The margaritas are watered down, the food takes an hour to arrive, and on top of that they don't know how to cook. Two members of our party ordered tostadas and they were frigid. Not cold, not cool, not room temperature. FRIGID. We told the manager that this was not correct - she told us we didn't know what we were talking about (despite being Mexican for nearly 30 years) and that tostadas were cold. Let me explain, cheap dusty restaurants will freeze the pre made tostadas overnight and then warm them up the following morning. These people did this but forgot to warm them up. We asked for the manager again when the second tostadas came back but the server told us she was too busy. Can you believe that? The manager was too busy. On top of everything they had the nerve to give themselves 20% gratuity for bad food and worst service? This restaurant is so bad the owner should be ashamed of owning it. read more

Don't go here. Waited nearly an hour for our food. When my friend's tostadas came out, they were COLD. Not just a little warm as if they'd been hot, but cold. When we asked for the manager, she said, "They're supposed to be cold, but not the meat." But lo and behold, the meat and frijoles were, in fact, cold. They took it back and heated it in the microwave for 30 seconds. When my tostadas came out, those were cold as well. Like they'd been frozen before and left out to thaw and had finally reached a non-frozen temperature. We asked for the manager, but she was "too busy." We could see her step outside, look at our table, and step back inside. We asked for her again after a few minutes, and she was, again, too busy. When we got the bill, they had already added 20% gratuity and wouldn't take it off. The owner should be appalled this manager represents their business. And if they don't know how to make tostadas, then take them off the menu. I understand that business is busy during H Street Festival, but this is next level absurdity. read more

Yes this is happening. I am currently being discriminated against in this moment at the restaurant. I am sitting at their outside table after work, hungry. A lady came out of the shop asked me if I were staying because they need the table for business. Confused as I sat at the table I told her I was staying and I asked for a menu. That was about 20 minutes ago and no menu yet. I am still sitting here because I'm in disbelief that they are ignoring me. I asked another sever for a menu and she put 1 finger up and said, "hold on" as if we already had an interaction. Five minutes later no menu and a white couple have been sat and already have beers. The first time I visited, I ordered an assortment of fail-proof items a-la-carte (so I thought): rice, beans (the only option was "refried"), plantain, taco, gordita, and a corn tamale. It was cooked through, so they get a "participation" star for that. Nothing to write home about though. - REFRIED BEANS: more like "flavorless bean-like purée". I didn't know that one could make a bean purée. I now stand corrected. I found it interesting that they didn't try to build on any flavors or use simple seasonings or herbs. No onion, garlic, cilantro or anything. Just straight out the can goodness, I suppose. Good thing my 1 cup portion didn't set me back much ($1.50). The second time I ordered it, I took it home to season it a little. - TACO: the chicken taco was actually decent. You can tell that it was slow-cooked with traditional spices and probably lots of love. However, they packed the juicy, delectable chicken it in a super fragile, thin and tiny (about 4" diameter) tortilla. I couldn't even pick it up to eat it. Sadly, it had already fallen apart when I reached the table. Good thing I had a fork handy. But who wants to eat a taco with a fork?! They could've easily presented it in 2-3 tortillas or work on their tortilla game. Sheesh!! - TAMALE: the first time I ordered the corn tamale (no meat), I was kind of pleased -- but maybe because my expectations were already lowered by then. It had a light sweetness and was a pretty good portion for $3. The second time I ordered it, the tamale was cold! Like straight-out-of-the-fridge cold. Totally unacceptable for the amount of time I waited for my order. - GORDITA: It's similar to a tostada, wherein the toppings are piled onto a flat tortilla structure. How was it? I'd say 'forgettable'. Don't bother. Get a taco instead. - WAIT TIME: Be prepared to stand around or call in your order early. In my recent trip, I literally only ordered vegetarian items (rice, beans, corn tamale, tortillas). All of these items were pre-made and shouldn't have taken the 35+ minutes I waited on a moderately busy night. I was hoping that they would add some extra flavor or something. But no. The ceiling there was beautiful and now it's gone. With Cava and Starbucks and Nando's present, will anything that's not a chain have the capital to give H Street a go? With my hunger on the rise and Whole Foods across the way, I decided to roll with the underdog. I am a part of an extreme minority--I don't eat Mexican food. I used to love it but like Jamaican and American Soul Food, I am abstaining. Today, it was back in the swing. I ordered Gorditas, Tostadas and Empanadas, yes fried on top of fried. I ordered a Vegetarian something and two with chicken. I've been here a few times to get a quick bite. The tacos are at 2.75 each and quite small. I had one al pastor and one chorizo. Each has tons of flavor, but there were times it was there was too much salt on the meat. Perhaps they accidentally added too much salt at the end? The $3 tostadas are good, but very difficult to eat. I like that they pile the ingredients high, but the fried corn tortilla is still small. Maybe the same size as the taco. I also tried their beef platter for $13, and thought it was a bit expensive for what it was. The quality of meat was good, but very thin, and the two sides are good. I always find myself getting hungry after I eat here, even though I usually order 3 tacos as a meal in this area. However at the Taqueria, I would probably recommend getting more than 3 small items or even a platter and a few tacos. The place is super casual, clean after yourself and throw away your own trash, pay at the counter. No soda dispenser so ask for tap water behind the counter. A neighborhood gem! Two of us came here for a casual Saturday lunch. We skipped the shop front as it looked crowded and ate in the main dining room in the back for the first time. Our server suggested the deliciously seasoned steak stew special which comes with 3 corn tortillas, two sides, a hibiscus agua Fresca and a jello dessert for $10. She also suggested the polla a la plancha which was also great. Everything tasted fresh as the restaurants name suggests! Our only disappointment was that they were out of tres leches cake, which they make fresh. We will come back here to try the Peruvian style rotisserie chicken on a Thursday. read more

We love Fresca -- we live in the neighborhood and it is 100% our go-to location when we are feeling lazy and want something easy and delicious. It's great for take out and the patio is very nice as well, especially during the pandemic era when there are few options to dine safely -- and they really take safety seriously, especially in the takeout area. I regularly crave various menu items, but there a few things you should be aware of: 1. If you order draft beer, you will always get about an inch of foam. You're basically going to get 12 ounces of beer (if you're lucky) in a pint glass. 2. I've only been disappointed in Fresca when my order was incorrect. As I mentioned, we eat there all the time, so we are very familiar with their menu items. I recently ordered an al pastor burrito and arrived home to find out it was beef. I called in, and they denied it was beef, even though I could see and taste it right in front of me (and beef and al pastor are the two meats I order most frequently, because they're great!). As the clerk explained on the phone, the seasoning is what makes the al pastor reddish, which I agree with -- but my burrito had dark brown meat. After a little more back and forth on the phone, it was clear I was stuck with the wrong order, and it was also clear they weren't going to do anything about it. That was disappointing. read more

So I been wanting to try this place for a while. Came in on 4/6/2021 at 730. Initially the hostess was very sweet and accommodating my dad, my dog, and me. Took about 15 minutes maybe more to take our order. Place was not too busy. The chips and salsa order came 15 minutes after I ordered it. After about 55 minutes our food had not arrived. Wouldn't be a big deal but there was a party of 4 or 5 that got their food very quickly. The worse part was that some sat down next to us literally 30 minutes after we sat down and their order came less than 15 minutes after. I don't know what happened but thete was no explanation. I saved the review of the waitresses service for last. She never checked on us once. When I ordered a coke I had to call her over. this restaurant is NOT authentic at all. obviously the people posting how "authentic" it is are comparing it to Taco Bell. the portion for the price is outrageous. the burritos are the size of the palm of your hand and filled w/ WHITE RICE which is bland and flavorless w/ peas????? the salsa's (whether it be salsa verde, regular salsa or rojo) are unbearably spicy. there are no flavors to the salsa's because they are so over the top spicy. you can't even enjoy their chips and salsa because of the burn. to add, it's not even a jalapeño spice w/ flavor.. it's something added to the point of fire. YOU DON'T PUT WHITE UNSEASONED RICE IN A BURRITO AND NO AUTHENTIC MEXICAN RESTAURANT/HOUSEHOLD WOULD EVER DO THAT. our burritos were the most disappointing, dry, flavorless, tiny burritos i've ever had and it's extremely upsetting that some are calling this "authentic". complete price gouge for the most disgusting food i have had while living in DC. places like this are the exact reason we don't try mexican restaurants around here because they are disgraceful. the people commenting about how amazing it is have never had real mexican food and cannot be trusted to guide you in the right direction to ANYTHING w/ flavor. if you want actual authentic mexican food w/ real flavor and absolutely NO WHITE RICE, i would visit El Paso on Richmond Highway. read more

The silverware was really dirty and there was hair on it my husband and I ask asked for more silverware and hot water by time we got it our food was cold. I ordered a drink as well and it never came. We asked for a manager just to let them know about everything. She came with an attitude immediately. We pay the bill and begin to leave when the waitress loudly stated that we did not pay our bill, being the only black people in the establishment now she makes it seem as if we did not pay. My husband tells her the money is all there and to count it. She repeats without counting the money that we have to pay our bill. Everyone in the restaurant is looking at us now. My husband tells her to count it the moneys in her hand. She repeats the same thing again my husband at this point is upset because we obviously paid our bill even though we did not enjoy the service. The waitress finally counts the money and says oh quietly and walks away. I'm so disappointed in this business.
