I've been here a couple times now and its pretty good. Its small with a few tables inside. You order and pay at the counter then your food comes out for pickup. I normally just take out. The menu is fairly limited and I usually get the chicken souvlaki. Maybe with the optional fresh feta if I'm feeling sporty (extra charge). They can be messy so don't rule out using a fork and a knife if you need to. You can also get pork or shrimp. They also have a "traditional gyro" which I assume is lamb. They also have a couple different Greek salads that look good but I haven't tried them yet. They have a few sides you can purchase and I have tried the orzo salad and that was pretty good. You can get Greek yogurt with a variety of toppings if you must. They are open until 7pm on weeknights and 4pm on Saturday so if you don't go for lunch you better get there early. Despite being a casual take-out kind of place it's not cheap but overall I think it's worth it. It's a nice addition if you want something quick, reasonably healthy and a little different than the usual sandwich places or Chipotle et. al. Check it out of you're in the area. read more

I tried Freskos and I wasn't disappointed. I ordered the horiatiki salad with grilled chicken and a Greek coffee. I'm a huge salad lover. I regularly turn any meal into a salad so I'm a bit persnickety when it comes to salads. The salad was divine. Extremely fresh, well seasoned and beautifully plated. It was appealing to the eye and delectable to the palate. It came with freshly baked warm pita bread which was likewise delicious. This was my first time trying Greek coffee so Peter the owner explained the process of how it's made and how it's to be enjoyed. I had to let the grounds settle on the bottom before drinking. My love for coffee supersedes my love for salad so my taste buds were thrilled when I tasted the smooth and mildly nutty flavor of the Greek coffee. I'm definitely a fan! Peter is also great. He introduced himself to me and answered all of my questions about the menu. I'm an official regular of Freskos. I only wish they were open on the weekend! read more

We order from here frequently, and always the same two things. They have the best beef and lamb gyro in the New Haven area (particularly if you get extra tzatsiki) with a generous amount of good meat and a good pita at a reasonable price. They also have a very creative and delicious Greek salad. It's not cheap, but it's also the best we've had in this area. I would suspect that the other offerings are of similar high-quality. Very friendly service. If you're a gyro fan, you should definitely give them a try. read more

Second time here. First time was awesome, which brought me back. Second time was just as good, which shows consistency. My daughter attends a local university, so I leave 20 minutes early whenever I come to town so that I can get a gyro. And now, I've got to get two -- one for me and one for her. I'm not very familiar with Greek food so I didn't know what to expect but this was quite good. I got the shrimp souvlaki. I'm not a huge tzatziki fan but the pita was great and overall I was pretty happy with it. The service was fast and the owner(?) was friendly. Just okay, very skimpy on toppings for the classic gyro. It's a shame because the meat is good quality. No lettuce tomato or cucumber just a few pieces of onion some cheese and the sauce. My friend and I used a Groupon there and we would gladly go back. The owner was super nice, but since there was no one there, we did take out. We got gyros and loved them. My friend said the stuffed grape leaves were good as well. I got the avgolemono soup, was my first time trying it and it was fantastic. So this is the place that changed my mind about gyros. For the longest time my wife and I have not been able to find a place that makes a authentic gyros. She read reviews and we remember seeing the sign one day while driving down Whitney Ave and thought OK...there it is. It is a small space but its a gem. Long story short is that this is not the gyro that you get at the Greek festivals in the area. This gyro was amazing. Full of flavor and the pita was toasted on the grill to perfection. My wife had one as well (loved it) and we took an order of chicken souvlaki to go. I cant say everything was great though. The only issue was that the spicy feta that we took home was watery. I will be back in spite of that. To sum it up, great Greek food with a fair price and very friendly service. Bravo! I've never in my life had a better gyro than here at Freskos. They actually make it, with beef and lamb, and oh my gosh, the spices! Unbelievably tasty. To top it all off, they crisp the edges of the meat so there's a little crunch before you bite down into that soft, tender meat. The tzatziki is phenomenal as well; it complements the spices perfectly. I'm a big gyro person too, having eaten some of the best gyros the Northeast has to offer. Freskos blows them all out of the water. I know they offer Greek salads and yogurt as well, both of which I'd be very interested in trying... but I simply cannot go to Freskos and not get a gyro! Oh, Freskos! Bright, fresh flavors and quick, friendly service in a delightfully simple atmosphere. Given how many office buildings are within walking distance, this place must be CRAZY at lunchtime! As they should be. My husband and I stopped in about half an hour before closing time prior to heading to New Haven for an event. He ordered a shrimp souvlaki (YUM) and I went with a dinner combo - a freakin fantastic lamb gyro paired with a crisp Greek salad. Perfection. The lamb was succulent and beautifully charred, served on warm pita with tonsssss of tzatziki (just the way I like it), fresh dill, tomatoes and onion. Heaven in a wrap. Let's not forget about the salad - it definitely wasn't just a combo add on afterthought. Brimming with fresh veggies, stuffed grape leaves and a generous block of feta, it totally hit the spot.
