I try to eat here at least once a week. It's that good. I always order the vegetarian gyro, which is AMAZING. It's made with tofu, and the yummy char on the tofu is so freaking good. When I go out to eat I don't usually finish my meal, but here I do. I always want to order a second one when I'm done too. It's worth the few extra dollars to add the feta and kalamata olives. Everything always tastes so fresh. My husband usually orders the pork souvlaki. He loves it. We drink the greek water too, a sparkling one for my husband and a flat for me, which is nice. The coffee is also so good. I love the new frappe. Both the hot and cold coffee are very rich tasting. Made truly greek style. I also tried the baklava this time around. Wow. I've been here about 10 times and I'm mad I haven't tried it earlier! I also like that they sell a few greek products. It's a small but very clean restaurant. I seriously wish I had three more pieces of that orange cake right now. My very minor quibble was that I found the salad dressing a little sweet. One of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had in this town. The owner is rude and dismissive. Their cook even had an attitude. At one point they had two restaurants on the same street. So you can see how this could be mixed up when ordering through Uber for pickup. Thankfully the young lady at the register was friendly and made it right. However, the cook was yelling from the kitchen for us to leave and pick up the order at the other location. This was inappropriate as it's a simple mistake and wouldn't cost them too much more to make it right. Haven't returned since and never will. There was a Greek restaurant in the Boston area we loved and became very picky. Was very glad to find Freskos when we moved to North Haven! The people there are very friendly, too. My husband and I both always order chicken souvlaki. So fresh and delicious, and filling...someday I will try something different on their menu, but hard for me to deviate when I already know how much I will love that sandwich. Negatives? One thing that really bugged me is that they always include plastic fork and knife with my sandwich (despite stating that I didn't want them). Unless I'm eating something that actually requires them, why include them with a sandwich? It's wasteful and they should really try to reduce single-use plastics. read more

I'm so glad I made it to Freskos on the last day of restaurant week - it was so worth it. It is located on Whitney with a private parking lot so you never have to worry about finding street parking. The joint is very casual so not the best place for a fancy date. However, if you are in the mood for some affordable and refreshing, authentic Greek food, this is your spot. Upon entering, we were greeted by the restaurant owners/chef who were extremely friendly! We placed our order and they brought the food out to us (yes, they have 3 outdoor tables). Their sandwiches consist of a few options: pork, chicken, shrimp, tofu, and gyro. Only the protein changes, the rest of the toppings are the same (onion, tomato, tziki, dill). They have a spicy sauce available on request. The Hamden restaurant week special includes a sandwich, Greek salad (includes one stuffed grape leaf roll), and a cold drink - all for $10.99! Individual sandwiches are $7.99. All the food is so fresh! They even have some Greek dessert options. An absolute must go at least once! While it is said as a joke, Greek people are extremely enthusiastic about being Greek. There is nothing about the largely blue and white dominant colors in here that says otherwise. I'm not an expert in Greek food. I can't tell if the Boklava(sp?) is especially bad or good and if the food is very good. That said, their 'subs' or 'grinder' were fairly well spiced and likeable. Even at their higher price point, I like their's more than Subways. Subway is using pre-cooked chicken disks, microwaved meats. So, I would rather go Greek than eat anything chicken or beef from Subway. read more

Oh my! There are a few Greek cuisine places scattered throughout New Haven county, but few that can give such a high-quality gyro for such a reasonable price. I know that my job, as a Yelper, is to use language to try and convey to you how great the food at Freskos is. However, there are times where the taste of it all transcends descriptive language, and can only be experienced in person. This hidden shop has such cute decor, with little pieces of Greece scattered here and there in tasteful (pun intended) ways. My favorite little "knick-knack" had to be the little chalkboard near the entry door that had the Greek word of the week/month for their normals and occasional patrons to learn. On top of all this, the gentlemen running Freskos are so nice and have always been in good spirits when I have a hankering for some dolmas or spanikopita. Food: 5!!!!! It's been almost a year since I last ordered from Freskos. Unfortunately, it has gone down hill. Ordered 3 gyros and 4 butter cookies, for almost $50. The gyro's had no cucumber, one sad tomato, and the sauce had no taste. It might as well have been mayo. The meat had absolutely No seasoning and was tasteless. Came back to work in the area after many years away happy to find a place selling quality Greek cuisine.

While the veggies and sauces were very good and fresh, the meat was a bit dry and much too salty. We ordered a basic gyro. The tzatziki sauce was excellent but gyro needed a bit more of it. Tried what we were told was a chocolate covered baklava. It was very good but it was a hazelnut chocolate spread. Since most of the reviews are 5 star, we'll need to try it again. read more

I had the classic gyro a few times from this place, always fresh and tasty. Fries are also really good.

For me, it's the horiatiki salad, yogurt bar, and vegetarian gyro. I personally love grape leaves, so a salad filled with them is always going to make me happy. I also love the idea of a yogurt bar...they've got an equal blend of familiar toppings (think granola, honey, strawberries, blueberries), and more distinctly Grecian ones (quince, pomegranate seeds). Nice touch to offer regular and nonfat Greek yogurt, too. The vegetarian gyro is made with marinated tofu; it's lighter and delicious. 3/3 here. A few other nice touches -- there's Greek coffee, which, if you've ever been to Mamoun's or other Arabic restaurants, is similar to Arabic/Turkish coffee but not as overtly gritty. Strong but not so sludge-y. The restaurant itself is cute, too. It's well lit with giant, open windows, pretty wooden countertops and tables, and blue and white walls. There's even a painting of Aristotle Onassis and a door for malakas...they call their combo meal a 'Trio Bel Combo' like Trio Bel Canto. They get it. BEST Greek food I've had in the almost 10 years I've been living in CT. Where shall I start. I've been here 2x's so far in the last month. Both times got my orders to bring all the way home to Branford & Very accommodating w/ putting things on the side so they wouldn't get soggy etc. SOO, The Fried Cheese Balls are AMAZING & not oily! I am not a hummus fan, however, since it's a tad bit spicy & not extremely chunky, I actually liked it. Purchased them both times. Lg Greek CKN salad delicious! I asked them to put the chicken on the side. That way the salad wouldn't wilt /get warm since I had about a 30 min. ride home Even though I brought a cooler bag with ice packs. They actually use cherry tom. & olives have no pits! Excellent portion sizes. They give you a nice grilled pita cut into 4's w/ the salads. On my 2nd trip we got 2 meal combos, which comes w/ soup, sm. Greek salad or fries & drink. I got CKN souvlaki w/ the tzatziki on the side as well as Greek salad dressing for my CKN Slovaki too! They make their own Greek dressing which has pieces of feta cheese in it. Nice! Grilled pita slices of tomato red onion. It was absolutely delicious! My mother got the slovaki but with tofu w/ her tzatziki on the side as well. We both got salads. They automatically put dressing on the side. When you get this salad w/ that meal combo, it doesn't come with pita. So we got a side order of grilled pita which is 2 grilled pita breads (8 pcs) & My dad just wanted a chicken slovaki no combo. We got a order of the rice pudding. They put the cinnamon on it as well if you wanted it. There's not one thing any of us complained about whatsoever. I'm up in Hamden at least 1-2x's a month. I'm so glad I found this place online when I read an article about them doing a fundraiser for Ukraine. People I spoke to at my doctor's office told me how great they were so I stopped in the second time I was up that way. I will definitely be going at least once a month and trying so many other things I want to try. Plus getting many of my favorites! So hard to find good Greek food up here! The best food places and the ones that I love the most are when you get to learn about another culture. Walking into Freskos, that is what you get. Many things were labeled with Greek language, like the utensils and bathroom signs. I really liked that idea and being exposed to a new language. When you walk into the place, the customer service is the first thing you notice besides the decor and relatively simple menu. They definitely addressed my family and made sure we were aware of any unfamiliar dishes. They were also very friendly in terms of asking for feedback on our order which we were very satisfied with as we stopped in for a quick lunch on the way to Boston. We tried their souvlaki and gyro which were very reasonably priced. The food was well seasoned and the meats were cooked to have a nice char topped with the dill tzatziki sauce. My only recommendation would be to dice the tomatoes rather than cut them in half slices. It is one of the best gyro spots I have tried in a while and it shows as they have accolades on the wall. This place is totally awesome, I knew it existed in Hamden for a while and I finally took the dive and stopped by today. My goodness my food was so fresh and divine. I got the classic gyro, the meat was well seasoned, the onions, tomatoes and dill were fresh and the pita was so fluffy and delicious. I also got the Greek style fries and they were so good! The lemon seasoning and feta made it so hard to not eat them all on the car ride home. The inside is super cute, nice and clean, and their staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
