It's an ok place. A little pricey. Having eaten and personally making Phó for the last 30+ years of my life, I was bummed!! They don't have café sua da! They do not offer Phó Tai Sach. And they do not speak Vietnamese. I'm not going to find out what else they are missing--back to homemade Phó Tai Sach and my own killer café sua da! It makes sense that a town hosting an Ivy league liberal arts college such as Colgate would have a Vietnamese to go restaurant in the center of town...even if the town is smack dab in the middle of NY state's dairy land. There are way more cows than people in this part of the state! Dairy farms dot the landscape. Everywhere corn and cows. Friends and Pho is successful because the typical American style restaurants in upstate NY are horrible. Students and others flock to this place because they cannot eat anymore ice cream and milk shakes and grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese sticks and poorly executed burgers and chix wings etc. Anyway the Pho i had was rather tasty. Friends and Pho is what I'd call a Five Star "Joint". It's tiny. 80% of the space is kitchen and food storage. There are like four small tables. It's basically takeout but you can still sit and eat during slow periods. The owners are authentically Asian and are very accommodating and courteous. The food is quite delicious and comes out pretty quickly. I had the beef Pho and my wife had the cold Pho salad and we had some egg rolls. All are recommended. I'm half Cantonese so I know good food. We've been here at least 20 times now & they are still SUPER yummy! We'll be continuing to come back, that's for sure. =) They have been so delicious that we've introduced them to multiple people. One thing that we have come to recognize is that they are open 7 days a week, but they don't have regular days off. So they use the "bad" days to take a day off. Nhut and Jenny are home chefs and proud of their ability to cook comfort dishes from their native Vietnam. They are among the sweetest and most hardworking people I know. They formerly owned the local nail spa and went home every night to cook and dream of opening a restaurant. This is located in the former N13 noodle shop. I was ecstatic to hear that a Vietnamese place was opening in this area. There aren't a ton of Vietnamese options in upstate NY (especially considering I came from San Jose, CA where there are a ton of Vietnamese people/restaurants). This is a great addition to this college-town. The patrons here were mostly college students. I was surprised to see how tiny the interior was. I thought it'd be more of a traditional sit-down restaurant but there is definitely not a lot of space in there. There are two window tables that fit 2 people each. Then there is a tall chair area with a counter that seats around 5 people. Their menu includes items like spring rolls, egg rolls, pho, banh mi, bo kho and bun thit nuong. I thought it was interesting how they called it a salad because it isn't called that in most other Vietnamese restaurants. Yes, the noodles are served cold (this is typical) so that is where the term salad probably came from. I thought the meat was tender and nicely seasoned. The bowl had fewer vegetables than a traditional bun thit nuong bowl. It was mostly chopped lettuce and a few pieces of cucumber. The fish sauce had no chili peppers in it and was very mild in nuoc mam flavor (likely to accommodate the fish sauce naive population). The egg rolls were good but were around $5 for three. They weren't wrapped very tightly either. Food took longer than an average Vietnamese shop to be served but I saw that it was because there were only two people in the kitchen and only one cashier. The bun bowl had fried shallot and peanuts on top (so make sure to let them know if you have a peanut allergy). When I was in Vietnam, a woman on the street didn't believe me when I told her my friend had a peanut allergy. She said I was being silly. Peanut allergies aren't very common in Vietnam. I would have liked more cucumber, some mint, and more pickled daikon/carrots (do chua). The pho was good and had great flavor. It didn't come with a side of bean sprouts/vegetables. The bun bo hue was good but was made with pho noodles instead of the round noodle that's typically used for BBH. It also didn't have as much lemongrass flavor as I would have liked and it didn't come with the side of traditional vegetables (banana blossom, red cabbage). Their banh mi thit was an abomination. Banh mi is typically made with baguette bread and has pickled carrots and daikon inside, pate (optional), jalapeno, and cilantro. The banh mi thit they gave me (which was close to $11), was made with white sandwich bread and came with just meat and mayo. The lady didn't add carrot until after when I requested it. There was no daikon or cilantro. Banh mis cost $3.50-$7 bucks usually. This one was really expensive and was really not at all a banh mi. The meat also didn't have that charcoal flavor to it. So, I tried 5 dishes here. The only one I'd strongly recommend is the pho. Pho is definitely their best dish (despite there being no bean sprouts). read more

I'm from the Utica area and we have a few pho places. I currently moved to Norwich and I was dying for some Pho but not willing to drive the hour. I googled Pho near Norwich and came across this place. My boyfriend and I have 5 kids, my 2 love Pho and his 3 want nothing to do with it. We decided to get the kids fast food and take me to Pho. 4 of the kids finished their food and the 5th had not, therefore we brought it into Pho and Friends with us, the owners didn't have a problem with it. From the moment I walked in until I walked out the owners (I assume) were such friendly people. The Pho was delicious and I will definitely be coming back for more! It's nice to see a Vietnamese place in this small college town! I was pleasantly surprised at how good it is too-- I ordered the pho and it was very flavorful, with the perfect amount of meat and noodles.
