I was craving Indian food this evening and decided to get some takeout from Friend's Indian Restaurant! They used to have a lunch buffet that was very good but they haven't had it since the pandemic. However they told me today that they are reconsidering starting it up again. They do have a clean and spacious dining area and I think they will host events and banquets as well. I ordered ahead to have my dinner ready for pickup at a particular time and they were spot on. I had their lamb biryani which is also offered with chicken. It was absolutely delicious and plentiful...I only ate about half of the order! I also had their fish pakora which I would order every time! It was so good I may dream about it tonight! I also ordered some garlic Naan which was good but not fantastic. My meal came with a tamarind sauce and also a mint sauce for dipping. Everything was packaged nicely and satisfied my craving! Warm, Delicious, and Always Consistent! We were welcomed with a big smile . This was our first time dining in at the restaurant--we usually order takeout, especially since COVID. The atmosphere was clean and inviting, and the service was excellent. My husband ordered the Chicken Saag, and I had the Chicken Vindaloo. Both dishes were absolutely delicious--we actually had to stop ourselves from finishing everything because we wanted to save some for dinner later. The portions were generous, and everything was served hot and fresh, just the way we like it. Unlike some other places where the food arrives lukewarm, this place gets it right every time. This has become our go-to spot for comforting, flavorful Indian food whenever we're in Lodi. Really good food! I had takeout of chole bathura. Although a little bit in the expensive side, the quantity of chole and bathura matched the price. Super tasty! I found Friends right before COVID hit & shut everything down. They were advertising a buffet (all you can eat) for weekday lunches. I love Indian food but am very particular & a little picky so am often not impressed with less authentic tasting versions of my favorite dishes. Luckily, Friends consistently turns out the best Chicken tikka Massala ever. The garlic nan is a great accompaniment & I use it to dip up the sauce. It has big pieces of white meat chicken among a curry sauce that is full of flavor. So good! Ample portion packed to go very well so as not to leak out all over. The rice is also very good with a touch of cumin present which gives it a smidge of earthiness. After COVID the buffet no longer exists (& prices have double for menu items) but they are still affordable & well worth the price. Check ot out for dine in or take out, it is delicious & meticulously made with authentic flavors. Be sure to specify how mild or spicy you want your items to be. I would say they have gotten to know me and are very friendly and always strike up conversation with me when I come in. The food is great and consistent. They are so close to five stars... all they need to do is open their dining room back up and I'll give it to them. Overall for the price point they are right on par for what I would expect. We love the food! However since they have had to become takeout orders only, the customer service is awful. Tonight was my THIRD experience of my food not being ready at the stated time, but that's not the problem, it's the "oh you're food has been ready" when you check the third time as you are literally standing in their doorway peeking in and waiting for No one acknowledges you, they are rude in tone of voice and act bothered by your presence. Food is fantastic and they keep a very diverse menu. They aren't afraid to add plenty of spices to the food and is my go-to establishment when my wife and I want to eat Indian cuisine. The mushroom chicken is a personal recommendation for those wanting a safe bet to start with. Staff are friendly whenever I pick up food. The only issue I would deduct a star is for price/ordering. After COVID hit, they suspended dining in and going online orders only through the apps like door dash or Grubhub. On one occasion in 2022 I had the wrong order brought to my house and it was then on me to go to the restaurant with the wrong food and fix the issue. I love Indian food and was looking to convert my husband when we moved to Lodi. I was so disappointed when I pulled up Yelp only to find ONE restaurant that served Indian food. How good could it even be if it had no competition!? We decided on a day for date night, found a movie, and cruised over to Friends for dinner. We were only slightly put off when we arrived, the restaurant was dead, and it was at the end of a strip mall. Full disclosure: the inside is not picture perfect and when we got there at 5:30pm on a Friday, it was completely empty. I don't know if I can honestly recommend it as a date spot. The floor is not gleaming and neither are the windows. But, we're adventurous eaters and ever the optimists, so, we stuck around and gave it a go. Again: it's the ONLY Indian place, so, what choice did we have?! We had the bread basket, the Veggie Pakora, and Samosas to start. They came out in that order and the food was better and better every time they brought something out. The portions are sizable, but I do wish they came with more rice. If you're thinking about ordering the bread basket, I wouldn't do it more than once. It's a ton of naan and the onion naan is, well, very onion-y. Not that I'm critical of onions, this was just a lot right up front. There is some kind of honey naan that was absolutely divine. The entrees were just as good and, even though we were mostly stuffed by the time it got there, we gave it the ol' college try to finish. The food made it easy. Warm, flavorful, and made to order (we aren't exactly spicy food people, so, it's nice that they honored our "mild" request). After we were there for a bit, it became clear that most folks take food to go from here. Bottom line: the inside and decor is lacking, but the food absolutely more than makes up for it. I don't know why this place isn't packed! Of course, it was on a Saturday afternoon, 3:00pm, slump time for most restaurants. The service was fabulous and the food was spot on! Full size samosas (so many got post-Covid sized at other restos), chutneys that seemed homemade, garlic naan that truly was garlicky, fish pakora that was freshly fried and seemed as though hand seasoned, and a goat curry (spiced medium) that was perfect for us. The only item I found objectionable was the mango lassi that was soylent orange and may have been a canned mix. Payed for extra rice and bread and still did not get it, I went back inside and was given attitude, being called a liar that I left it in my car and came back in. I also asked to seperate my garlic and regular bread bc my daughter can't have garlic and he wanted me to pay for more or give him back the few pieces he put together. I've been going for years spending $60 every time and have spent hundreds here but to disrespect and lose a customer over 2 sides of bread is beyond crazy, the owner has a temper issue, and also too lazy to open the tables back up because of Covid.
