We ordered a takeout order and it was slow as hell! We never even got to taste the food. We ordered and then we waited for 30 mins with no updates and we ordered drinks and they didn't even give us the drink while we were waiting! Would not recommend this place if you are in a hurry! I was here for the Yelp event about a month ago & I made it back. This is about 30-40mins away from where I live but I was in the area on a Friday evening so i stopped in to grab some dinner. It wasnt too busy when I stopped in I was seated immediately. Very clean & enjoyed the music that was playing. I enjoyed watching TV as I waited for my food. Food came out quickly. I ordered the butter chicken, fish pakora, & garlic naan. I didn't know, but our order came with a soup. I'm not sure what kind but it was like a vegetarian soup maybe peas? It was good. The fish pakora was really good. Perfectly made & the fish was flaky. It came with a side of I believe it was shredded radish. I tried all the sauces with the fish pakora. The green sauce was very spicy, but all the sauces were perfect as I used it to dip my fish pakora. Of course the butter chicken was my favorite. The creamy sauce was perfect and the garlic naan was delicious. Staff were friendly and service was great. I'll be back to try their lunch Buffet. Stopped in with a craving for Indian food take out and they did not disappoint. The owner introduced himself and the staff assisted in helping me choose a dish. Everyone was very friendly. I got the lamb curry and rice, spicy, with a naan bread. The lamb was tender and cooked perfectly, great flavors and spice level. The naan was also delicious. The restaurant was very clean and everything in order and tidy. I came at about 8 pm and my order was ready quickly. Overview: I visited Maharaja tonight as part of a Yelp event where I was able to try a large variety of dishes. First of all, the family was charming and incredibly inviting. The ambiance was very classy and gave a very modern aesthetic. The staff was incredibly accommodating and welcoming as well as quick and efficient. Most importantly, of course is what I thought about the food. Below I as far as my overall experience I would say as a person who struggles with the spice pallet that comes in traditional ethnic foods I found this cuisine to be very entry level. I found that the spice pallets were complex and had great depth but were not overpowering for somebody who is inexperienced with intense spice mixes. However, if you or someone who frequently eats Indian food or is used to more intense spice palettes like the rest of my group is, I do think that offering the same dishes at varying spices would satisfy the most amount of people. Being entry level myself I found the spices to be just enough. However, the rest of my party found it to be lacking in spice, I think offering a mild version for beginners and well spiced versions for the veterans would be the most apt way to increase satisfaction amongst. I was also pleased to find they had a variety of vegetarian options that had both incredible texture, well balanced and complex flavors, and still felt like a whole sustainable meal. If you would like more detail, feel free to read the rest of the review where I will break down each dish individually. Mango Lassi: while this was something new to me I found it extremely refreshing and I found that the yogurt within the drink gave me a nice respite from any of the dishes that were particularly spicy, therefore making an excellent pairing. Aloo Tikki: It had an amazing texture being very crisp on the outside and pillowy within. Bursting with a wellspiced starchy filling. I found it to be very satisfying even though the denseness of the filling threw me off just a bit. Overall, I would definitely try it again! Vegetable Samosa: another amazing vegetarian friendly appetizer. The outside was crisp and the inside was filled with vegetables. But this is one of those dishes that did challenge me seasoning wise. It wasn't spicy at all, but as someone who's new to garam masala and spices of that nature, I found it right on the cusp. So again a very good one for beginners. Tandoori Chicken: I was pleasantly surprised that the chicken wasn't gamey in the slightest. The meat was perfectly cooked and not too dry and patted down with ample spice. I most enjoyed it paired with their mint sauce, which did surprise me. However, without a sauce I felt it lacked seasoning and spice. But as a pear it was perfect for the spring and it was probably my favorite thing I tried tonight. Chana Masala: another score for the vegetarians as this seemed to be a chickpea based Curry with complex and deep flavors that paired incredibly with the garlic naan. Shabi Paneer: another score for the vegetarians! I found the paneer to not be too dry and pair incredibly with the sauce which also had complex flavors and very mild spice. Butter Chicken: A western favorite and classic this butter chicken felt very different from others. I've tried. This of course being my go-to dish at any Indian restaurant. I was pretty sure I knew what to expect. However, I was wrong. This was much better than any other place I'd been while not challenging me spice wise. It had an acidity and depth that made it much more interesting. Paired with garlic. Dawn and I was one happy camper! The butter chicken, rice, and samosas were absolutely delicious. The service team is a 10/10--so welcoming, attentive, and genuinely kind. Normally I order Chicken Tikka Masala (Spicy) every weekend and it is one of the best Indian dishes of all time. Today I ordered the Butter Chicken (Spicy) and it was very unappetizing and disappointing. The chicken was very rubbery and chewy. It was like chicken curry in buffets at some restaurants who leave it sitting in a warmer for a long time. So I called them and informed them the chicken did not taste good. The lady who answered the phone abruptly told me she would inform the kitchen and hung up. I always came here on a Friday or Saturday night and food is always great. First time getting food during the day and it was very bad tasting. Not even spicy. Not as spicy as when I get it in evenings. I ate couple bites but it was just too bad that I couldn't eat the rest. I discarded the remaining butter chicken in the trash. I probably won't be coming back for awhile because of the awful taste it left. In the future I would never get food here during the day, only in evenings and only on a Friday or Saturday when there's higher traffic. read more

My husband and I thought we'd give this new Indian restaurant a try, so we went this afternoon for an early dinner. What a delight! The service was great (Tarangeet Singh was our server), taking the time to explain the various dishes to us and his recommendations were outstanding! The meal was so flavorful and tasty! The Mango Lassi was wonderful, the grilled lamb chops were perfectly prepared, the Chicken Tikki Masala was delicious--so tender and with ample servings! I'm still sitting here as I write this review, I won't risk forgetting the details of this wonderful meal. My wife and I came in for an early dinner just after the lunch buffet ended to find plenty of seating and an incredibly convivial host. We started with the crisp sampler trio of pakoras and samosas which were delightful. A wonderful start to our first visit. We had just finished our last bite when the sizzling iron platter of lamb chops arrived on bed of onions and peppers. Tender does not begin to describe the delicate nature of this true delight. The flavor is right there with the presentation and texture. We had two safe options that are always safe at a new restaurant, butter chicken and aloo gobhi. Both of these were far more than sides tonight! Butter chicken that was tender, juicy and bursting with rich and savory joy. Aloo gobhi with potatoes and cauliflower cooked to absolute perfection. We were so absorbed in these dishes that we forgot about the dish of garlic nan wafting its aroma towards us. Our host reminded us to enjoy the nan, while actually checking to see if we needed more. This review is based on the Yelp Event recently held at the Lodi restaurant. So there is another Maharaja in Stockton at Eastland Plaza or whatever they are calling it these days. But the Lodi store is smack dab in the middle of central Lodi near the movie theater and the old Casablanca Piano Bar, or Riaza Winery depending on your age. First, the restaurant had an awesome vibe from all the Yelpers from all over the nation attending this event. Just kidding on the nation, but from all around Sac and San Joaquin counties for sure! You want to root for a family owned restaurant like this as the family is deeply connected to the business. The family was on hand to share and tell a quick story about how they are invested in the quality of Maharaja. They want feedback and really care about how you experience the food here. Too spicy? They can adjust heat to your palate. Need a recommendation on a certain protein? They have all types if you don't want to delve into the world of lamb just yet. Without getting into detail, the food was of high quality and very family forward. Everything was freshly prepared and flavorful. As for the drinks people were enjoying a legit Indian Beer, along with a mango drink that was also a big hit. I really can't recommend a dish for you but I want to try a lot of them such as the butter chicken which is a staple, and of course you need to get into the mandatory tandoori chicken. Really, the naan bread is a deal breaker for any great Indian restaurant so I have yet to judge this part. I am sure it's fantastic. I will be following this up with a better play by play when I actually have a sit down with the entrees and maybe a gulab jamun for dessert!
