Oh my! It's the first of August and it's a scorcher... So my friends and I decided to grab some refreshing shaved ice to cool us off. We headed to Texas Blizzard in the Heights. It's their first day out at the new location on studewood and 11th by fiesta. The lot was relatively easy to get to and there's plenty of parking. There were a few chairs out there too so we didn't have to stand around for too long. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Though they were fighting the heat in that poorly insulated venue, they always had a smile on. I give them props for being genuine in their demeanor. The shaved ice are delicious. It was so good, I had seconds. Everything melts in your mouth (the good way). The dreamsicle truly taste like the popsicles I used to enjoy during my youth. The natural mango and watermelon with chile drives me crazy!!! I am in love with that mango and cannot wait to try more flavors. Mmm finally some good shave ice in Houston! Yeah there's the usual other places in bellaire but the ice here really sets it apart. It's soft and not made up of ice cream, etc so very good for those who don't do dairy well! I tried the mango and it was sooooo good and refreshing! My roommates and I found Texas Blizzard when we were searching online to satisfy our craving. We decided to give it a try since it's close to our home. This place is a little food (or should I say sno cone) truck right next to the Fiesta. They have a small parking lot where after putting in your order you can sit in your car to avoid the heat and wait for your sno cone. They have a several flavors to choose from but I especially like the natural flavors. Texas Blizzard has flavors such as mango, pineapple blueberry (yes that's one flavor!), wedding cake, blue raspberry, grape, etc. They also have about four or five toppings (cream, chile, diablo chile, sour spray, and tamarind) that you can put on your sno cone. My absolute favorite combo to get is natural mango with chile. I've tried other flavors but the one I keep coming back to is this one. The staff is extremely friendly which is another reason why this place is awesome. Who wants to deal with a rude staff? Ask for a punch card if you plan on visiting this place again and again. Seriously... The best shave ice in Houston. The ice is not coarse or crunchy, but rather thin and light. Their homemade flavors are awesome. Not heavy or too syrupy like other places. People love the mango and chili powder, but my favorites are strawberry and pineapple. The owners are super nice. Be sure to pay attention to their schedule. They move around quite a bit. After yelp searching for a closer SnoCone option in Montrose (Mam's being a little too far), I stumbled upon Texas Blizzard. They normally park in the Christy's Donuts parking lot though you can check their facebook and/or Twitter to see where they are each day and what the hourse are. The day we went (a Tuesday evening) they were open from 1-7 p.m. Cheaper than Mam's and certainly as good, we LOVED what we had and ordered three snocones in all. The ice is tender and melt in your mouth, the syrups were generously applied but not overdone. Everyone's favorite was the pineapple upside down cake (combo of wedding cake, pineapple & coconut). Thank God these guys were serving up awesome refreshments on 19th St during White Linen Night. Holly hell it was hot, and I saw this ray of light directing me right to the truck. The servers are friendly and willing to recommend their favorites. A relatively small menu with just a handful of shaved ice options, and a few add ons to choose from. I went with the mango and a sour shot. Which was perfectly refreshing. You don't need the large, I could not believe how big the small was. An excellent little truck. read more

I ordered a rainbow snow cone, which is comprised of several different colors/flavors. It was delicious. I really liked the blue color. BUT about halfway through I realized all the colors had mixed together because it melted. It Was still tasty, but I felt like it wasn't as pretty as it was at first. read more

Believe the hype. God when it's this hot out under the Texas sun, cool off with some Hawaiian ice! My favorites are the "natural" flavors including mango and watermelon. Other flavors are still enjoyable. Don't miss out on toppings like Chamoy or cream. What does it taste like? The ice is smooth and not rocky or crunchy like snow cones from the fair. It tastes like an almost ice cream texture just without the fatty cream (unless you add some on top). Natural "syrup?" I am intrigued. If you're wondering too, it's basically just juice from whatever fruit it is. They may have added sweetener or something to it but it has a milder taste than traditional syrup and tasted just like fruit juice to me. Mango had the best compliment with the ice in my opinion. The other flavors, non-natural are what you would expect. If you're into snow cones, it's up to par with the rest of them. Ice is nice and light/fluffy. The staff is friendly so no issues there. Price is pretty hefty for a snow cone though so don't expect a cheap treat. If only this place had regular coconut and were closer to Katy! They were parked outside of Rothko Chapel for the recent Summer Solstice Observation and it was pretty hot out! So we decided to grab a snocone, snowball, shaved ice, or whatever you call it in your neck of the woods! I honestly didn't expect it to be good. I honestly expected the ice to be chunky and for there to be little to no syrup like most snowcone dealers (cuz lets face it, it's an addiction). It was nice to see that the bottom was saturated and well shaved, but I think what most people love about this place (and why they went from 4 to 5 stars for me) are that they have actual fruit juice and not just artificially flavored syrups to pour over the ice. Natural ingredients FTW!! So why was I going to subtract a star? They don't have very many flavors (or maybe it was because of the event) so I was initially disappointed, but getting that pineapple juice on the ice got them their star back! UH represent! The shaved ice place has landed at university of houston campus, perfect for a super hot day on campus. They have so many varieties of flavors such as pina colada, cougars blood (tigers blood), mango, strawberry etc. and they pile it on pretty high. They also have natural flavors where they use real fruit to make the juice. Mango is where its at! The Natural Mango is probably the best flavor add a little Chamoy to it and you get a sweet and salty treat to keep you cool on those hot summer days. So I'm a sucker for anything dessert related (especially cold desserts in these hot hot summer months) , and as a Heights resident, I felt that a trip to the newest stand in my neighborhood was necessary. Upon arrival, there was plenty of parking, and no line. We were instantly greeted by a friendly employee who answered all of our questions. The natural flavors, she explained, are made with natural fruit juice, so they're the healthier, less sugary options. My mom and her friend each opted for a natural mango kiddie size for $1, but I went for a $2 medium nectar. Theirs came out first, and they tasted wonderful. Light, fluffy ice was the perfect vehicle for some sweet mango juice. It tasted just like a frozen mango. My slightly larger nectar was icier looking, but it was very good. Light and fluffy and melted perfectly in my mouth. It had a slightly unpleasant aftertaste, so next time I definitely want to check out more of the natural flavors. Overall, this neat little trailer is the place for a fast, delicious, melt-in-your-mouth treat in the Heights! They do take credit cards, but it's a $6 minimum, so unless you're buying a couple of ices, bring a couple bucks. Will be going back for another taste ASAP! read more

I've been going here for a couple years now (back when they were over at Christy's Donuts) and there is nothing more perfect for a hot Houston summer day than Texas Blizzard's Shave Ice (and yes, it will forever be Texas Blizzard in my book). The ice is always fluffy and soft and not at all like the crunchy ice chunks of your typical snow cone. They're always generous with the syrups and I've never run into the age-old problem of being left with ice and no syrup. The naturals are out of this world and you can definitely tell they use fresh fruit. I always get mango - I swear, it tastes just like you're eating the fruit. The same can be said of the strawberry and likely any of the fruit naturals. The people working here are always so friendly and it's nice when owners take the time to get to know their customers. In the summer, I probably hit this place up every other day at the very least and there have been multiple occasions where I've come by twice in a day. I'd say get the biggest size - it looks huge, but it'll save the inevitable second trip since you'll be sure to finish it off right away (especially with friends stealing spoonfuls). read more

Rip off prices for a snow cone. I was downtown, and yelped the nearest snow cone spot, since it was boiling out. This was our only option. I remembered the truck from free press summer fest. The snow cones were $9 there! This time on a regular day, they were $6 I believe. That's totally overpriced. And the super thin plastic cup/bowls they come in our awful.
