***Disclaimer*** I'm new to the snow cone thing. In fact I've only been to one other than Friohana. This is pretty much the only reason for the 2 star review here. 2 = "Meh. I've experienced better." Not to plug Buzzle's in Spring, but Buzzle's. The Ice: So this is pretty much the only product these shaved ice joints can figuratively, churn out. That being said, ice cubes are not the same as shaved ice. Now, it could have been because of the intense heat, but i had a half inch layer of shaved ice. The rest was chunky or just an entire block of each. The flavors: Blue coconut and tigers blood were good. There's maybe 10 flavors to pick from... Again, i've seen much more expansive flavor options The cup: okay this thing made eating a block of ice 10x harder and frustrating. OMG, I am absolutely IN LOVE with these guys; this is the real deal. The ice is truly as soft and powdery as snow, lots of syrup all the way trough and very reasonable prices. I had a small banana with cream on Thurs for $2.50; Sat I stopped by during the gay pride events & ordered a small strawberry with chile con limon for $4.50. I have figured out after talking with one of the guys that this is how it is intended to be served: in the pretty floral cups and totally bursting full of snow cone! If you catch them at Christy's Donuts, you will get the regular prices in styrofoam cups. Yesterday I decided to try the Natural Watermelon - let me say how much I LOVE watermelon but totally hate artificial watermelon flavor. I had a good vibe about the natural part and heard them say they take the fruit itself and somehow I think it's pureed and turned into a syrup, and they only half the amount of sugar as the other syrups. Seriously, I took a spoonful of my sno-cone and it literally tasted like a sliced of frozen watermelon that had been pureed in a blender; it was absolutely FANTASTIC!! The shaved ice is very fluffy and soft, which gives the edge of making Friohana better than it's competition. It reminds me of Taiwanese shaved ice and it is not your typical icy crunchy snow cone. The syrup was just right without being too sweet or sugary. The cone looks huge but it's not dense so you can easily finish and crave for more. This is the first sno cone truck I've been to that offers natural flavors (+$1, worth it). The strawberry had a little more of a lighter flavor but still a natural taste that included bits of strawberry seeds. Most people go with the chamoy on top but that's not really my style. If I could go back I would probably get some cream to bring out the strawberry ice. The spoons are dangerously sharp for a plastic spoon. The thin curves were scratching my lips throughout the ice. Since it was a festival, their menu was a little shorter than usual and they weren't allowed to mix flavors (normally, they can). I opted for their Natural Mango, and I'd tell you the size but it won't matter because it was literally a MOUND. A gigantic mound of fluffy shaved ice overflowing the edges of a poor, plastic cup. Which was good for me, but that cup never stood a chance. As big as the portion was, the snow-cone was nothing special -- the ice was light and fluffy, the mango flavoring tasted natural enough, but there wasn't any "wow" factor. Nothing close to how I feel when I'm chowing down on an Ice Barn snow-cone, which is like pure, unfiltered, chilly bliss. If you're overheating, TBSI's huge portions will do the trick, but don't expect too much more than that. Unless you want to make little kids jealous, and I do enjoy making little kids jealous. P.S. Now, had they been next to a park, that would have been perfect (that's a hint guys). Also, not sure if they have half and half there but for their cream, they should probably use that instead versus diluted condensed milk because the cream they use just ads more sweatness to the flavors which can be overwhelming (another hint). I came here Saturday early afternoon with my wife since we love shaved ice. It wasn't too busy, just a few people in line. We were very disappointed with the terrible service and rude responses in asking about the flavors and rainbow flavors, not to mention the staff seemed to be fighting as they assembled the orders. There is only one size option for a high cost given the product , and only two toppings can be picked. Rainbow is only 3 flavors and you can't even modify one if you don't like it (like bubble gum). The flavors: all the classic favs along with some new twists. We got watermelon and mango which were delicious. Their syrup is all natural and the flavor was on point. Also recommend getting a topping (CREAM!) The sizes: there's small, large and "texas sized" which the small alone is a decent size, but we all sprung for the large - NOT a mistake/only like .75 more (why not?) The ice: best around in Houston; love when shaved ice is actually shaved and not crushed - perfect! Since I chose three different flavors, I know you can get three different flavors at no additional cost! Every time I come across the Friohana truck I smile. It's literally one of my favorites in Houston. I was recently at Buffalo Bayou Park and the truck was there. After a long bike ride my boyfriend and I stopped here. I got the natural strawberry and mango; my favorite and absolutely amazing and refreshing. My boyfriend got raspberry and apple which was very good as well. They have lots of choices for add-ons like cream and chamoy, but I haven't tried yet because the strawberry mango is sooo good on its own. Their ice is the *perfect* texture. The mango with chile con limon is mind-blasting!! Yes, my mind was beyond blown, it was blasted. The natural syrup with a spicy kick was the perfect cool down in the hot hot heat of Texas summer. It was a generous portion (although not sure of the value as you will see below). The ice is a soft, texture and the syrup was so good. No bland ice at the end. The shaved ice comes with a straw (so thoughtful!) so you can slurp it up when it melts and becomes a slushie. This is probably the BEST SNOWCONE I have EVER had. EVER! I had it for the first time today at the Houston Food Park at 1504 St. Emmanuel. The only downside is all the upcharges. They had a hefty upcharge today from reading the yelp reviews... $4 for a small and $6 for a large. That's in addition to $1 upcharge for natural syrups (Mango, Pineapple, Strawberry), $.50 upcharge for the chile con lemon, and alas a $.50 upcharge for using your credit card. We ended up paying $6 for this sucker. Also, only single flavors offered today v.s. splitting other times. If it wasn't so mind-blasting, I might have dropped a star for all the upcharges. Shaved ice just melts so nicely in your mouth. The natural mango is worth $1. I usually add chamoy on top, cuz once you go chamoy, you don't go back. The chile add-on isn't worth it to me as I don't taste much of a difference with or without it. They are really good about updating their calendar on their website/social media and also to let you know if something's up and they can't make it to the scheduled location. Oh my! It's the first of August and it's a scorcher... So my friends and I decided to grab some refreshing shaved ice to cool us off. We headed to Texas Blizzard in the Heights. It's their first day out at the new location on studewood and 11th by fiesta. The lot was relatively easy to get to and there's plenty of parking. There were a few chairs out there too so we didn't have to stand around for too long. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Though they were fighting the heat in that poorly insulated venue, they always had a smile on. I give them props for being genuine in their demeanor. The shaved ice are delicious. It was so good, I had seconds. Everything melts in your mouth (the good way). The dreamsicle truly taste like the popsicles I used to enjoy during my youth. The natural mango and watermelon with chile drives me crazy!!! I am in love with that mango and cannot wait to try more flavors.
