We had high hopes for this place. We sat down, and within 10 minutes the waiter had come to our table 3 times trying to take our order. It was very aggressive. When we placed our order we tried to place our appetizer order first because the meal was going so fast and they refused to take our appetizer order without our entrée. We were done in an hour and five minutes. it wasn't like it was incredibly packed (two open tables at 7:15). I cannot 100% blame our server as whoever was the manager was pushing him to take our order quickly. The food was good but the entrées were also very small for the price. Bergen county certainly has an abundance of Italian restaurants, specifically in some of the more affluent areas. With that said, I've been to quite a few of them and most of them have left a bit to be desired for the prices they are charging. From scratch isn't inexpensive at all but the food is wonderful, fresh, and the ambiance is quaint and romantic yet unpretentious. They were able to accommodate my allergies with no issues at all and the service was impeccable. The crostini with grilled vegetables and scmaorza was absolutely delicious. You can tell that the owners take pride in not only the presentation of their food but also the quality of the ingredients they use. My boyfriend took me on a date here one Saturday night along with a bottle of wine because this place is not only great for pasta, but it's BYOB. We didn't have to wait long for a table even though the space was small, it was accommodating. From Scratch (as per restaurant name) is made, you guessed it, from scratch! I'm a sucker for this stuff. I loved how the menu was limited because any restaurant that has a handful of dishes, makes those dishes with love and dedication. We didn't end up ordering a starter, we wanted to have pasta as soon as we could. We also took into consideration the prices. It can get a little pricy but for fresh and delicious ingredients, it's totally worth it. My boyfriend ordered the tagliolini alla carbonara and I ordered the spinach ravioli special of the night. We want to start by saying that their food is amazing, but tonight was all about bad service. We had an 8:15pm reservation. We received our appetizer and at first everything was going great. Around 9:20pm, we were still waiting on our main entrees, and we asked the owner(s) about our food and he told us that they were busy and it would come out soon. It was a simple conversation where we were communicating our concerns about not getting our food. Normal for an hour + wait. At that moment, a kitchen staff member comes out and says to us "If you don't like the wait, then you can go across the street to BareBurger." The owner looked horrified and we honestly couldn't believe this staff member had just said that to us. We told the owner it was completely unacceptable and we got up and left. The entire situation was uncalled for and this type of behavior towards customers should not be tolerated. We hope she was reprimanded as the exchange changed our view of this local restaurant. read more

From Scratch has a perfect trifecta of fresh ingredients, old school Italian dishes, and competitive variety! From start to finish, every dish had a delicious, unique taste. The restaurant apparently cycles through different menus on a weekly basis, but that won't stop me from becoming a regular! The only thing I might take issue with is the seating. The space looks like a converted pizzeria, so seating can be limited (one of the reasons they almost exclusively take reservations). However, the food more than makes up for the somewhat lacking space. From Scratch has quickly become one of my favorite NJ restaurants, and I highly encourage everyone to give it a try! read more

We were excited that we were able to get an 8pm Saturday night reservation last minute. Before getting there I read the menu and picked out my meal: eggplant rice balls and pesto pasta. However when I got there they were sold out of both the appetizer and the main course. We ended up sharing a crostini that was rice ball replacement. However it wasn't vegetarian so my husband ate the cured meat on a side plate. The app ended up tasting like grill cheese sandwich. From Scratch has recently become my new favorite restaurant. My husband and I really enjoy coming here for a delicious and cozy meal, and bringing a nice bottle of red wine to enjoy with it. Everything on the menu is incredible and made with the finest ingredients, most of which is imported from Italy. My colleagues and I also recently took a private cooking class here. We learned some great recipes, got to enjoy them and learned some tricks to try at home too. The private classes are excellent. Not awesome. Just ordered 4 dishes (one pinsa and it wasn't even how we ordered it) and 3 pasta dishes. All of it was practically inedible. The pinsa tasted like cleaning products...like they made it with Lysol. The pastas were tasteless, no salt and the carbonara was inauthentic and disgusting. Didn't even eat the pinsa at all. The pesto with green beans was tasteless too. Fed it to the dog actually. So disappointed!! We heard such good things and out of the 4 of us, we all hated our meals. And for 76 bucks?? I find that the stars given on Yelp in NJ tend to be inflated, and unfortunately this is another example of that. Now for NJ standards this place is fine, however, maybe I've been to too many better places in NJ and in NYC. I went in with high hopes but left pretty disappointed. Service was great and super accommodating. We started with the mozz and tomato app, which I found to be flavorless. The tomatoes weren't particularly cut thick or sweet and the mozz was watery. We also had their special truffle baked mozz, which was a blob of baked cheese on a plate that quickly got cold and hard and had little truffle taste to it. The meat and cheese platter was great and the jams were the highlight. We substituted the spaghetti in the cacio e pepe for the handmade fettuccini, which probably wasn't the best recommendation by the server. It lost the flavor of that dish. The pasta with sauce and pesto needed more pesto (the small amount I tasted was fabulous) - it was overwhelmed by the hearty sauce on it. The chicken corn and avocado salad was basic. The corn wasn't particularly sweet; the avocado wasn't particularly ripe, and the chicken was cold. Good quality lettuce though. The veal was the better of the entrees. The branzino was okay, though lost its essence in the heavy sauce it was cooked in. It also wasn't what we expected based on how the server described it. The dessert was heavenly on the other hand. We had the almond cookies and a cream, pastry, and berries dessert was excellent and not to be missed! Given the hype on this place I'm glad I tried it and can give a review of what I experienced here. read more

Came here a few years ago for a friends milestone birthday. Fresh ingredients and family style atmosphere. It was a snowy evening in February and everything, from the food to the ambience and company, was perfect. We were just about the only diners in the space and the owners came out to chat with us and explain the process. If memory serves, they may have been out of stock on a few of the key dishes, but I thought this was to be expected given the quality, variety and freshness of the ingredients. The presentation of the dishes we did order was excellent and we lingered for awhile late into the evening while the owners graciously allowed us to stay. The menu offers a smattering of salads, sandwiches, pastas and baked items with ingredients all purportedly fresh off the boat from Italy and assembled in house. Two elegantly appointed plates and a basket of house made bread were delivered to my table with disconcerting speed. The torta containing pancetta and asparagus was airy and flavorful. While ingredients were fresh, the salad with grilled chicken, avocado, and corn was undersized and overdressed. Found this totally randomly last night looking for a nice place to take my family for a birthday dinner. Everything about this place is top notch. From the customer service when I called for the reservation all the way until dessert. The food literally comes out steaming from the open kitchen right next to you. Each dish is personally made with care. Small dining room so it allows for such service and food. There seem to be two seatings (at least when I went) so anyone who walked in without a reservation unfortunately was turned away because the place was booked. Very low key decor and no feeling of pretension. Just excellent fresh food prepared with excellence. For my kids we ordered homemade pasta with cheese and tomato sauce (not on menu but they made special for them). We also got a pinsa romana (like pizza but lighter crust -- so amazing) for a starter. My wife ate a pinsa with mushrooms and cheese and I got a special (lasagna with cheese and black pepper). My oldest daughter ordered Tagiliolini Cacio e Pepe (pasta with cheese sauce and black pepper). All the pasta is homemade, as are all the other ingredients. We ended with some flourless chocolate cake, which was a perfect ending to the meal, and some tea. Prices quite appropriate for the food, service and experience. Great helpful waiter and chef right there when we left to give personal compliments. A real gift of a place. read more

Went here for lunch. It took a bit for the food but it was worth it. You can tell the craft that goes into the food here. We both had paninis. They had a meatball special that looked good but we didn't have the time. They give some Balthazar Bakery bread (always pretty good as always) with some good olive oil. Se had the vegetarian panini which was excellent. Good bread here. Good vegetables as well. It was 9.50 or 8.50 which was fine for the size and flavor. Very fresh. I had the bresaola (air dried beef carpaccio) which came with the usual accompaniments, arugula, a salty cheese (in this case Pecorino Romano,) and some olive oil. It was 12.00. So you'd think that price is high. Well the portion size of this rather delicious meat is huge. The sandwich was excellent in other words excellent. Would have tried the miel torrte but we had no time. 4.2, might be a bit higher. Also: There was a group next to us that was being super demanding but our waiter stayed nice the entire time. He put up with a bunch of jerks politely and that is saying something. This place is honestly would be given a 4.5 and will probably be given a 5 soon. read more

You definatley need reservations here, especially if you plan on coming for dinner. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side. It is all white and has an open kitchen area. Our table ordered the tagliere misto for an appetizer. Which is a meat and cheese plate. Wow! The meat would melt in your mouth. The plate also came with different jams. For my main I ordered the pasta al pesto. I have never tasted a pesto so fresh before. It wasn't oily like some pestos tend to be. Another diner got the spaghetti cacio e pepe, which she compared to a dish she had in Italy. They also had specials that night and one was a salmon lasagna. We were intrigued by it so we ordered one. It was remarkable! It had more of bechamel sauce instead of a red sauce. So delicious!. The owners were very friendly and you can tell they care a lot about the food they put out.
