Frontier Utilities touts themselves as having low energy plans with easy payment options. The first time I tried to pay my bill, I was told I could not pay with an e-check and I was required to use a credit card. Huh? The option to pay with e-check is on their website! So I paid with a credit card because I was told that my utilities would get cut off if I didn't pay on the due date. I then tried to set up my e-check in time for the next billing cycle, and the exact same thing happened. I am not able to use an e-check even though it is listed as a payment option. I emailed care@frontierutilities.com, which is their support staff, explained the issue in detail, and I've never received a follow up email. Customer service is a joke. They say they will "escalate" the issue but you will never hear back from them. Furthermore, the people answering phones are not even based in the US. I'm so frustrated that I've filed a complaint with the PUC, and hopefully that might wake them up. Very disappointed, and in times of high energy costs, the least that can be done is to have decent customer service. Frontier Utilities is a terrible company to do business with. read more

Received a contract after signing up that was almost 3 times the advertised price that I actually signed up for. Tried calling in and never reached anyone (was on hold for 30 minutes in their "automated system"). Tried registering online to get help and the website won't let me register. This company is very bad. Their billing and customer service are terrible. I went over two months without a bill from January until March. I repeatedly contacted them regarding this problem and got nothing but runarounds. I continued to make payments equal to my normal billing rate of $125.00. When I finally got a bill in late March I still owed an additional $216.00 and this was also including the February Big Freeze during which I basically had NO Power at all for 5 days. Rolling Blackouts my ASS!!!! So for the months of February and March, I was billed an additional $108.00 above my normal electricity billing. read more

Be very careful with Frontier utilities. Read the other reviews. They consistently increase rates until you find out in shock. This company has charged me $100's above market rate. They currently charge me 20.9 cents a kwh (~1000+ kwh usage) - this is how loyal (3 years) and good customers are rewarded by them. The rate tripled in little over 2 years! I see that with other posts they are so considerate and want to resolve matters but they deliberately cause the issue first. And then they pretend to care. Care about luring in other customers I think. I actually did call their customer service but they thought it was totally justified to increase rates like they do. And then they offered a contract extension so they can do the same again next year. What a joke! Unreliable, unethical and overall bad business practices in my opinion. Stay away. Good prices until your promo ends!! Then they take advantage of you and jack you up so high you wish you were still on the frontier with gas lamps and a breezeway home. I even tried to stay with them if they would give me a promo rate but wouldn't you know it....they only offer promos to new customers not ones that pay on time for a year and keep their business going. I just signed to yelp in order to leave a review for Frontier Utilities. They lie, say you never call when you did and say there are no notes on file. Keep receive by disconnection notices when all is paid, being charged with connection & reconnection fees that they say will later reimburse as their system made a mistake. When I call they say well you are going to get disconnected because you haven't paid, when it is all paid. I had to pull my cell phone records to prove I had spoken with agents not once but 2 or 3 tines to fix the same issue. Hate it! They sent out notices you have to sign your contract for next year, I received those and I began to look for another company. I found one and was pleased. I have a new bill from them and they have charged me a 154.14. I did not ask the other company to call them but they did. Run far far away ! Contract term expired and I guess Frontier thought that was a good enough reason to double my electric rate. My bill went from around $400 to $676! We called to switch to Frontier on 08/04/17. Our customer service rep, Sheila, was one of the nicest and most attentive reps out of any customer hotline I have called. She was super efficient in signing us up, and she answered quickly to all our questions. She was also super knowledgeable in explaining the differences between the plans to us and helping us figure out which one fit best. Both my husband and I are super happy with the experience (especially after the experiences we have had at other companies until now) and we really appreciate how pleasant and easy she made it!!! I also want to add that the rate and terms we got are really good compared to the crap we've been dealing with from another thieving company in Houston. Had Frontier before we moved and we should have gone back to them when we moved back, they've always been fair and we never had a problem or unwelcome surprise with them. read more

I too, would give 0 stars if that was an option. I have a real estate investment business and have upward of 5 homes served by Frontier including my residence. I favored them for their lower rates. one shortfall is that they have been unable to separate my bills so I can see how much to pay for each property. their 'operations' department has been 'working' on this issue for over 3 months now. In the meantime, I call every month, spending 30 minutes, to 1.45 hours (and counting) on the phone with them to figure the total for each home, and pay my bill. every time I add a new residence, they put me on the same plan except this last time. it was a month to month pay (no contract, which I was not offered). I later learned that they can increase the rate at any time without authorization or notice. which they did. I know owe $668 for a 1 month period in which the bill should be around $120. In addition, they have charged late fees even though I have been on the phone with them every 3 weeks to pay bills and continue to sort the homes out. they are unwilling to reverse the late fees or adjust the large bill to what it would have been if it had been set up correctly by their agent. I was so excited to switch to this company because of their advertised good rates. I have only been with them for about 4 months and my experience with them as a service provider has dampened my feelings. When I first switched to the company, I didn't receive my first bill and when I called in they told me that it was past due so I paid it. The on the second bill I noticed a $20 disconnect fee. I called in and spoke with customer service and they waived the late fee. My next couple of bills had due dates on the 6th and 7th consistently, so no issues. When I went to pay my most recent bill on the 5th with my other bills, I noticed that the due date was the 4th. I really can't understand why it wouldn't be the same as the last 2 months being that they have the same number of days in the months and the billing cycle would be the same if not very similar. When I called in the representative attempted to explain, however it doesn't make sense. I didn't experience this with my old electricity provider. What's worse is that even though I paid the bill one day late, including the late fee of 5%, they still charge $20 for a disconnection notice. That is insane!!! This is a horrible company policy! If you are going to charge a late fee, at least give your customers a few days grace period before you slap them with another fee. These actions alone make me think that this company is in business to gorge money from their customers, not create customer loyalty. I will be looking for another electricity provider when my contract is up. I would rather pay more for my service for a company with good customer service and prudent policies than deal with a company that seems out to get their own customers. I notified this company 2 weeks in advance to set up transfer of my service. they were supposed to terminate my service on the 9th instead they cut off my electricity on the 4th which caused me to lose all my food in the refrigerator ( about $200) and dine out for 3 days. not cheap. when notified of their error after 4 phone calls and 2 hrs, I was told they would credit me $25. lmao what a joke!!!!! read more

Ok so I see a lot of negative reviews for this company. I wish I would have read them before. Every one that I read is spot on with my experience. I believe the one comment that was positive was more than likely a bot or something like that. Pleas, please, read before you make a decision on this company. I paid final bill, or at least what Frontier said was final bill. Closed out account due to their POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND BUSINESS PRACTICES. Now a year later, I am receiving phone calls from collection agency saying that I owe Frontier more $. I told the agency that if I did owe $ I would pay just send me an invoice or something from them stating what I owed. He refused stating that I just needed to send them the $. So after several attempts to contact Frontier later, finally got a hold of someone who told me that yes I did owe the $. I inquired as to why almost a year later was I just now receiving this information, I was told that this is how they operate. If they don't receive the full amount, they immediately turn you into a collection agency. I again stated that I have the close out bill in hand and that I sent final payment that their company told me. So why was I just now being told that I owed more. Sounds like they made a mistake which does happen. Again the person stated that this is how they due business. So please as CONSUMERS, the only way we can fix things like this is to STOP USING THEM. I encourage all to please read this in full and pay attention before making a decision, and yes I understand that a lot of people will read this and think that he is just upset. True to a point but really just want people to read and understand what happens. This is a money hungry company, it's best to stay away. Wish there was an option to pick less than a star, because they don't deserve more than that. Frontier utilities took $13,400.00 from my bank account. I owed $133.37 and decided to pay $134.00 to be a little over to cover the .37. But their site didn't accept it correctly. After I put in $134.00 it added an extra .00 which brought the amount up to $13,400.00 with out my knowledge. My bank charged me $600 in overdraft charges! But after going to talk to my bank, I filed a claim and they were able to returned the money back in my account, including the $600 because they could see it was a mistake. Something frontier can learn....good customer relations! They warned me not to deal with this company anymore or at least don't pay with my bank account.  But now Frontier is charging me a $35.00 fee for not having $13,400.00 in my account!!! Ridiculous!!!! I am being penalized for using their site that didn't accept inputting an amount with dollar and cents, but instead adds 2 more zeros at the end making it a lot more than its supposed to be. If I would've paid the correct amount of $133.37, it would've charged $13,337.00 and still blamed me for it. They have since then corrected this glitch online, but still charge me $35 penalty. After arguing to get my money back, and the guy wouldn't budge, I told him I'd be sharing this with everyone. He smugly said, "that's fine, go ahead".  On another note when looking at their website, I check payment history, it says I paid $98.3 for $98.30 and $168 for $168.00, but then shows the correct amount of 104.97. Which isn't a big deal, but it does show how they have issues adding digits in the correct places and where to input the decimals. Also,  if you call them,  you can tell the call goes to another country and its hard to make out what they're saying because of strong accents   Great way to keep customers,  I will be switching ASAP read more

What's very interesting to me is that all of these reviews are exactly what I experienced. I was not with them long enough to notice rate hikes b/c after two months of them saying they sent me a bill and turning off my electricity I changed to another company. OF which I'm having NO problems receiving and paying my bills.....mmmm, what's the common thread here? They padded the last invoice with all sorts of extra charges, I've tried countless hours to get my issue resolved with their customer service people, raising it to management but NOTHING gets resolved. This is the most frustrating company I've ever experienced and I would absolutely not recommend signing up with them. Horrible company. They turned off our electricity without notice over a $35 bill/3 days of service. We are new customers and had only used their services for 3 days. We never received any notice, nor pink slip, nor phone call. They said they had called but had two numbers on the account and one of them was incorrect. They only called this number and never left a message. When we received our FIRST bill (the day our electricity was turned off) from them the bill simply stated that there was an "opening balance" of $35. There were no big, bold, red lettering saying we were late and at risk of having our electricity turned off, nothing. All we had received in the mail since that day, was a welcome letter. I've used their prepaid services several times despite their high prices. One of the houses I owned the electricity bill was very high despite no one lived there and they disconnected the power without a proper notification. When I signed up I was told or at least I understood that when you have no money in your account it will be disconnected and no need to cancel the services since this is a prepaid account, however they now say I owe them money after 4 or 5 months. I didn't receive any call or letter stating that I have some balance. Very confusing and unprofessional. Do not recommend to anyone! read more

Cheapest price on electricity I have found and they got me switched over....no problem

This company has been guilty of extremely unethical conduct and predatory billing. During the last week of August something went wrong with the auto pay on their side (other bills on the same account came through during this period). We also have statements that say do no pay this bill and it will be drafted. They sent termination via mail and no other contact (even though it is in the terms of agreement to keep phone and email up to date) while we were out of town and cut the power roughly 5-7 days later. Having the power off for a week cost us roughly $500 in lost food and $250 property damage after having to throw out the deep freezer. This is in addition to the multiple fees heaped on the account due to missing the 1 payment. After we called it took 2 days in the Houston summer to get the power on due to multiple wrong entries on account of Frontier staff. On top of this they are billing the old account an additional $180 for early termination. There is an open market in Texas and I strongly encourage you to take your business elsewhere. read more

We have used them for a year now n they have saved us money. Easy to sign up with and nice folks to deal with.

I saw a rate on powertochoose.org and called Frontier to sign up for the plan. I asked the phone rep what all of the options are and he told me all of them. He did not mention the plan that I saw on power to choose. I asked him about that plan and let him know that I'd like to sign up for it (since it was better than all of the plans he mentioned). He helped me sign up for it. A few weeks into my year-long contract, I looked at the fact sheet and realized that he did not sign me up for the plan I chose, instead he signed me up for one with much higher rates. That is a very deceitful practice, and I was very disappointed. Their rates were high, had a lot of bogus charges, and the bills were difficult to understand. Recently, my year was up and I decided to choose a new electric company. I found a great rate on power to choose and called the company. I asked about the plan I saw and the phone rep informed me that the plan was exclusively available on power to choose. You have to sign up for it through that website. Then it hit me that this was probably the case when I had signed up for Frontier a year ago. The rep wanted his credit/commissions/kudos or whatever for making me sign up through him for a plan I did not choose. He should have been honest that he couldn't sign me up for it, instead of signing me up for something I didn't want. read more

Sketchy billing practices. I signed up for Average Billing (paying only $62.04 per month) yet this amount never appears anywhere on my bill, which consistently shows me owing $300-$400 a month. When I pay my Average Billing amount, inevitably I will then receive a cut-off notice in the mail. When I call Customer Service and explain that I'm on Average Billing and am only contractually obligated to pay $62.04 per month, they claim that they reflect that I am on Average Billing but that the billing system doesn't recognize when a customer has Average Billing and if the bill isn't paid in full, a cut-off notice is automatically sent out. I asked if this is a common problem and was told "yes". I then asked what they plan on doing to fix the problem and I get total silence (only crickets chirping). I have escalated my issue to various managers on duty and am promised the issue will be resolved but I still get cut-off notices each month. One Customer Service Rep had the hutzpa to tell me: "Just pay the full amount of the bill and you won't get a cut-off notice." I nearly reached through the phone and rang the jerk's neck. read more

Agent of Frontier Utilities came my home and explained advantages of their company. Several times I asked her if there will be any hidden fees or not. She assured me that I will not see higher bill than I had before if the usage is not higher. I got my first bill from them, usage was less, but the bill is 50% more. And now they say that, it will take 2-3 bills for me to go back to Columbia Gas. This is trick. That's why stay away from them. This is just an example of not trusting salesmen and I have learned my lesson thanks to Frontier. I was misled by the salesmen who was showing that I would have a cheaper rate it I used Frontier as my supplier. He very clearly pointed to a number on my past electric bill and said that was what I was currently paying as a rate. His rate quote was 7.7c which was cheaper than the number he pointed out, however my rate was actually significantly less than his cheaper quote. Now my bill has been 30 or more a month and I feel very upset about this situation. I am reviewing my experience everywhere I can, to prevent anyone else from making a similar error. They requested I emailed them to get in touch to discuss my issue. However, I emailed them on 3/21 and I have yet to get a reponse to that email. Just be super careful and read the EFL. The rate they promote has NOTHING to do with the actual plan they lock you into. The 7.3c sounds great, but the reality was $70 base charge AND average 12.9c. VERY different. BAIT AND SWITCH. Other companies list the detail to avoid these situations. I am filing a complaint with the regulatory commission. i cancelled my service in Oct 2018 and on March 9,I received a threatening email "According to our records, a payment is required to avoid your account being submitted as past due to credit reporting agencies, which could have a negative impact on your overall credit profile." even though I had paid my account in full. I contacted Frontier and they said it was sent in error. Makes no sense to me how such an error could be made. read more

This company is using dishonest and fraudulent practices and will do their best to rip you off in the end! Beware!!! I was a dedicated customer with them for 4 years and yet, they slowly increased my rates and gleaned my pockets. I became aware of the issue on my last bill when the kwh rate jumped to .25!!! This amounted to a $200 bill for a small apartment. When I looked into my billing statements, I discovered that this rate was exactly double what I was charged last year at the same time. What the hell! I called customer service and they told me that my rate jumped because I was not on a contract. Never once did they contact me to provide me with cost savings alternatives. Instead, they were smiling all the way to the bank, charging me an astronomical rate, hoping that I wouldn't figure out their scheme. They then offered me a contract at about .15 but refused to do anything about the out-of-control bill they issued me. Screw that! I dropped them immediately and went with Glexa. Frontier is going to lose its customers and go out of business if they keep this up! Totally unacceptable. read more

So my first invoice was due the on the 17th, the invoice states that after the due date there will be a 5% charge of 4.95. My pay day was the 21st, so after reading my statement and logging into frontier (which online didn't have ANY additional fees listed) I made my payment on the 21st. The customer service rep on the phone today told me that a discountion notice was sent on the 18TH, and that was a $20 fee. NO WHERE on that invoice does it say that if not paid by the due date that I'll have a $20 fee. She told me there's no way to have a set due date. If this Is how you all are going to do business, it's horrible. I now am coming up on a due date of the 15th, but my direct deposit isn't until the 19th... So you all mean to tell me that I'll have to pay another $20 disconnection notice? I haven't heard of an electricity company doing this. This is ridiculous. I needed to change my name due to marriage and the customer service line was super nice!! She told me exactly what to do and then when I sent the email and forgot to add the attachment - they actually responded immediately. Once I got over my D'oh moment and resent with my documents - my account was updated within an hour with a confirmation email. Since I often quote, if you give a mouse a cookie.... I then asked for my latest bill to be recreated with my new name and her response was within minutes. Unfortunately, she couldn't do that but she had already put in a request for a letter of service that will include my updated name! I'm very happy with the service! read more

Really never had any issues with them because I really understand power grid in Texas. Companies handle billing and really are limited as to what they can do according to PUC. I needed a company quickly to get away from Griddy a novel approach to electrical buying direct but spoiled by a questionable operator according to many reviews. When rates reached $9.00 per kwh was time to go. I broke from my mold saying never to buy electricity or a home or car on a NON- fixed rate the same for free electricity...NOTHING IS FREE! Frontier did perform switch easily without any issues. The issue came with rates above 3000kw that was not published in the EFL and up billing on rates below Use 300kwh pay for 1000kw. Major electrical buyer I have 3 story home pool 4 A/C's 3 sheds are a draw in Summer Winter not so bad gas heat. I was shocked to find out my rate over 3000kw is 17.6c per kwh at Frontier. This only happens In July and August..... Time to switch again. The "special renewal offer" they sent was ridiculous so time to move on. Not really their fault most companies do the same I guess they think you're automatically going to accept and not check elsewhere. Now at Constellation Energy with small bill credit but huge discounted rates beat Frontier by almost 2.8 cents per kw should equate to $700.00 savings per year. Company billing companies in Texas need to operate wiser and try to retain customers that pay on time, since that's all they do is bill and handle complaints they really cannot do anything about. Don't do it! Unfortunately, due to other issues, we forgot to renew or cancel our contract. Our rate went monthly from .06 to .12 AND a 9.99 monthly service charge! At least in our area, this whole energy supply "choice" just causes more heartache and money out of our pocket. This costs us hundreds of dollars. read more

I just found a really nice small apartment for my baby and me, and decided to shop around for electricity quotes online, I filled out what I thought was a quote from Frontier Utilities to check for deposit and stuff, and a few hours later I read an email from them saying my request for service was successful (this was Sunday, April 21st) so I called Monday morning at 9am, spoke to rep 503 and told him what was going on, and he said my request was not successful that AEP had not accepted the request, he told me to disregard the email so I hung up. So today Friday, April the 26th I go to my apartment to continue the move in process and find out I have electricity, so I called AEP and they tell me my service provider is Frontier Utilities, but when I called Monday morning I specifically asked the rep (503) several times if I could get a cancellation email, or how I could make sure that request was cancelled, and he assured me I had nothing to worry about, now with all the bad reviews that I read, I guess I'm gonna have a really hard time dealing with this. I feel cheated on by this company for providing services I didn't request and not cancelling them when I called to clarify the situation, I'm not ready to move in and nobody is at my apartment. read more
