TL/DR: Frost is letting their product quality fall which is almost always a permanent change to an establishment. I'm concerned the Frost of old is gone. For years Frost has been our standard of what a donut shop should aspire to be, in particular their maple bacon bar. Unfortunately over the past year they have compromised the quality of their product to manage cost. I understand needing to raise your prices in this economy, but as soon as an establishment decides that quality of their product is optional then they have caused a permanent change. Once a business has accepted that they produce a lower quality product there is no motivation for that quality to recover. Customers that seek quality will go elsewhere and the remaining customers will be shopping on price so they will not reward any increase in quality (and the associated increased cost). read more

Um wow. I can't believe I haven't tried this place yet. It doesn't taste like a generic donut store. The bread was really good, it had a bite on the outside but was soft, fluffy and air pockets on the inside. Clearly homemade. The maple/chocolate bars are legit bars, like they had to been 8-9 inches long. The icing too. The chocolate donut for the example, I'm so used to getting a glob of super sugary and thick layer of crap on the donuts. These on the other hand had a great ratio and equally tasty layer of chocolate. What I really enjoyed about this donut was the ratio of bread to icing and the icing wasn't overly sweet; you could still taste the bread without going into shock from so much sugar. "Umami" of flavors for a donut if you will. The only thing I am disappointed in is how long it took me to find this donut shop. This is what I would say is as good as a donut could get. We ordered off of the LUNCHEONETTE menu for the 1st and only time. I ordered the meat lovers scramble and my boyfriend ordered the biscuits and gravy with over medium eggs and ham. We also ordered a maple donut and apple fritter. This was by far one of the worst meals I have had. The food was flavorless, the potatoes were so undercooked that they were crunchy, the gravy was your standard canned gravy, the biscuits were rock hard (they were my side and I didn't even try to eat them) the ham was burnt on the edges , the over medium eggs were extremely runny, and the maple donut came in a little paper bag most of the frosting got stuck in it. I'm sorry to be this kind of person, I love to write good reviews but this is not one of them. I was following the page on Instagram and really excited to try the donuts and macarons. It is pretty far from where I live so one day my husband and I were in the area and stopped by. We ordered 6 different macarons and 1 donut: pretty disappointing. The macaroons tasted like pure sugar, flavors were barely there and the texture was not right at all. 2 of them were not that bad.. but since I was comparing to the other 4, I can't really say that the two were "better". All 6 were in the same scale. The donut? Took one bite and couldn't eat it anymore, it was stale-- I mean, imagine fried food left there the whole day.. and it was just 2:50pm not the end of the day for the store, maybe if they were fresh they would be good? Oh goodness. The service here sucks so bad. I'm not sure if the staff realizes this, but if no customers came in- they would be out of jobs. I come in in the mornings at a pretty consistent time. It's always the same people working. There's never a line. They always act like they're dying and try to rush you out. They don't give you a minute to look at the treats. They try to pressure you to hurry it up. I have three kids so I'm damned efficient. I'm friendly and easy to serve- if you can't suck it up for me- good luck to you. Went to Frost this morning. Haven't been there for some time. First thing I noticed was that there was very little selection available. The prices were very high for donuts and the macaron prices were ridiculous. Due to the lack of selection, I just grabbed a couple of maple bars. Wow, you could literally see through the frosting because the amount was so scant. So, basically I paid (quite a bit) for two fried bread bars with a "hint" of maple. When Frost first started, I had to eat a donut in two sittings because it was very decadent and filling. Now, I'll skip Frost and have toast at home. This place is really fancy and in a good location, has gourmet cup cakes, doughnuts and macaroons. But why "one star" - this place gets basic things wrong, the taste, texture and size of food. The cup cake is very small for its price, and does not taste good - it's dry and the frosting is very grainy. I've been coming to this store on and off for the past 3 years. The location is convenient when shopping in the area. The doughnuts, the coffee, the service are fine. I'll keep coming back. One thing that gets me every time: the customer area can be dirty. You might want to consider getting rid of the kids area. It's a good idea but it's germ fest. The books are unkept and dirty from sticky fingers. You have some customers that don't care, and that ruins it for everyone. If you can't maintain it just get rid of it. Doughnut crumbs on the tables, floors, and seats. Again people should clean up after themselves but some feel compelled to leave a mess. When the store is busy I get there is a delay in cleaning up, but you gotta make time for it. Most recently, I was there Dec 23rd. There wasn't a line for doughnuts and the store had ~5-8 customers sitting at tables enjoying their coffee and doughnuts. At least one staff member wasn't busy and could have come from behind the counter and cleaned up. One suggestion: Have wet wipes available for customers. Ordering the "Blueberry Lemon French Imperial Doughnut", makes you feel all "Hoity Toity" - So, ahem, what the Hell?...order a glass of Chardonnay. And then, you have to pay for your "pish posh" doughnut and glass of wine. You'll sit at the little table of your choice, periodically dabbing your mouth with the corner of a paper napkin, while sipping your Chardonnay (pinky out). ...And the rest of the time, ...you'll be kicking yourself in the ass...because, for the price of that doughnut and chardonnay...you could've bought a cheap bottle of wine, and a half-dozen doughnuts to share with friends. A landmark to sugar highs. They have cultivated a little bit of the air of the gourmet dougnuttery about them in their external branding, but it doesn't seem to come with any tax in the form of high-falutin' ways around the shop. They're nice and the phone, and when you get in, the kids behind the counter are charming. In every way it feels like a welcoming and pleasant neighborhood establishment. What this one offers is a prominent location on Bothell-Everett Highway, in newer construction that can only be described as strip mall writ large (it's in Mill Creek Town Center, which is a strip mall with ambition). There's parking, and there's a big case of fresh, bright, and shiny doughnuts. It doesn't have much of that coffee shop vibe; I just popped in and out but I didn't notice many tables and chairs where you can hang out. So that leaves the focus on the doughnuts, which is where most people want it. They have a lot of unusual-looking ones, and quite a few with unusual ingredients. I know they have a few they're famous for. I had bites of a couple out of the box I brought to the office, and I can say that even the weird ones taste good. The emphasis seems to be on massive amounts of sugar in every recipe--every bite was super, super sweet. Filled GOOD. Cake BAD. I recommend their filled doughnuts: Marcona Almond and Tart Cherry Bismarck and Bavarian Creme. Their fillings are very flavorful and makes up for the dryness of the bread. I've found that any of their variation of a cake doughnut (say Red Velvet Cake Doughnut or the Aztec Chocolate) have just been dry. Donuts are pretty low on my sweet list. That being said, Frost puts out a decent product but I think they should be eaten fresh. My current favorite is the Butterfinger. The candy is in little bits and softened a bit by the moisture of the donut. I'm also a fan of the crullers (chocolate and maple) and the froissants. I like the airiness that contrasts the typical density of the donuts. A little puff of pastry topped with yummy chocolate, maple, or even white chocolate strawberry. The maple bacon bar has a good amount of bacon on it and pairs well with the maple icing. The staff members are funny and conversational and above all, patient when customers like me can't quite decide which delectable flavors to try. read more

Hard to believe this was my first time at Frost. I knew it existed when it was a donut shop, but never ventured inside its doors until last night. It was a spontaneous idea offered by my friend who was celebrating her birthday a day early. How can you say no to the birthday girl? The store itself is Pinterest-worthy with it's bright lighting and pink and brown motif, and most delightful dessert display. I love that they have expanded to include a variety of sweet treats, in addition to donuts. Sadly, the one GF cupcake they offered (Death by Theo Chocolate) was dry. Really dry. The frosting was a lovely chocolate mousse with a sliver of white chocolate on top, but the rest of the cake was lost on me. Our party enjoyed their traditional confections, ranging from Campfire S'mores to peanut butter cheesecake, Butterfinger Blast and Bavarian creme-filled. If their frozen custard is available the next time I come in (they were out last night), maybe I'll go that route instead. I'm happy to give Frost another try, but am hoping they work on their GF cake recipe and offer more GF options in the future. Just sell your cheesecake filling in a cup, I'd buy that! read more

FROST DOUGHNUTS = LOVE These babies are fresh, extremely moist, not overly sweet (like Krispy Kreme!) AND you don't get that after taste of oil (which is a huge turn-off). Wish they had a store in Seattle! Friendly staff, cute store and a huge variety if you come earlier in the day. I tried the Maple Bacon Bar, which was like a breakfast sandwich all in one..strange and not my fav but the boy loved it & I think it's one of their most popular donuts! Frost is a good spot to pop in for a quick pastry or cake dessert/snack whenever you're in Mill Creek Town Center. They have a few other locations in the area as well, including their relatively new location in Lincoln Square in Bellevue. I don't know if it's their first, but this location has been around for many years and is a staple of Mill Creek Town Center. The store looks deceivingly small from the outside. On the inside, it is spacious, with lots of tables and a clean, light, open atmosphere. The display cases are huge and lined with a large variety of donuts, cupcakes, pastries, and macarons. Huge racks for pastry cooling line the back of the counter, and the employees are usually professional and friendly. I've been here many times and tried a bunch of things. In general, I prefer their donuts to their other desserts. The raised donuts are very large and generous with the frostings/toppings. The cake donuts are smaller, but not too heavy, and well-balanced in terms of sweetness. Their pastries and cupcakes are okay, but the cake/pastry part is often a little overly dry, with icings/frostings that don't particularly impress. I'm personally not the biggest fan of macarons in general, but I've had them from Frost and I think they are generally pretty good. One thing I like about Frost is that they're constantly experimenting with new flavors and combinations. It doesn't always work out for the best, but I appreciate that adventurousness. On my most recent visit, I grabbed a few different donuts, including their classic Butterfinger Blast (a glazed donut topped with chocolate icing with crushed Butterfinger), a blueberry cake donut, and one of their experimental flavors, "Blueberry Pancake," which was a blueberry cake donut topped with a maple glaze. Really enjoyed all three flavors. The Butterfinger Blast is a personal favorite of mine. Overall, Frost is definitely worth going out of your way at least once if you love dessert pastries/cakes. Frost Doughnuts is a necessary detour for any foodies in (or visiting) the Seattle area. There you will find a constantly changing assortment of the best artisanal donut selection anywhere. I had such a hard time choosing just a few I ended up getting a dozen of assorted donuts. The prices are a little high but so worth it for such deliciously perfect donuts!!! The SMOKEY BACON MAPLE BAR, CARAMEL APPLE FRITTER, BAVARIAN CRÈME BISMARK, BLUEBERRY BISMARK, FRENCH CRUELLER WITH MAPLE were all phenomenal! The perfect textures, the impeccable flavors and the unparalled execution in making these donuts were out of this world! The DOUBLE CHOCOLATE, SALTED CARAMEL, WHITE CHOCOLATE RASPEBERRY TRUFFLE, STRAWBERRY CAKE DONUT were all delicious as well but didn't take my breath away. Okay, here's the third pitch (my third attempt at the infamous bacon maple donut) and what do you know! It's a blooper into shallow center field...the crowd goes wild! Okay, bad analogy...Anyhoo I decided to give "Frost" one last go, and there was some improvement, hence the added star. 1. They actually had the bacon maple bar (Tip: show up before 1200 hrs) so I bought 3. 2. Customer service was actually helpful: I purchased a total of 4 donuts, but the counter guy suggested for what I was going to pay for 4, I could get the 1/2 doz. for 0.75 cents more...plus I was greeted and the transaction was quick. Some things though did remain the same: 1. For the 4 donuts it would've cost me $8.00 USD's...so do the math...that's like $2.00 a donut! Again, they are good, but not that good...if maybe they had like gold shavings on top or a toy surprise in the middle or something. 2. As good as the bacon maple bar was, you'd think they would use an entire piece of bacon, but no, just crumbles...I mean for a $2.00 USD donut at the very least you'd get an entire piece o' bacon, maybe some eggs on the side. Why did I add only add one star? Well, I still can't get over the price. We went to some hole in the wall donut shop a couple of weeks ago and for $6.00 USD you get an entire dozen donuts, decent selection and honestly, they were just as good....yeah, they do not have the BMB (I'm tired of writing it out), but that's almost a gimmick for "Frost". since that's the ony donut of it's kind that they serve...so that tends to be the draw. The money was charged to me, but no order ever arrived. I have called and visited but never catch a manager. I have emailed the owner, but no response. I would expect when i reach out that someone would go out of their way to ensure I got satisfaction. Move over Top Pot, there's a new doughnut shop in town. ;) I didn't try the bacon maple, but gave the hubby a couple and he sure did like them. I loved the Banana Bismark and the German Chocolate. That's all I had the stomach for this time around, but I have found my new doughnut place for sure. I got the mixed dozen for $14.99, I believe is the same as Top Pot, and oh so worth it too. You just have to think about this place as a doughnut version of Trophy Cupcakes. Yes, it's a doughnut, but it's a SPECIALTY doughnut. if you like the plain stuff, stick to your neighborhood ma and pa.
