I will say that before I came it was difficult to read their menu online or gauge if there were sugar free options. I will attach a photo of their menu in person, in hopes it might be easier to read on your phone when thinking about what to order. Additionally, I will say the barista was kind and willing to explain everything thoroughly, so I knew what I was ordering. I will emphasize that this is a drive through coffee stand. Their decor is adorable and very inviting for people wanting to enjoy a creative drink.

After this, it took 26 minutes to make my juice. It seemed like the printer prints tickets telling them what to make went down. It took two employees TO CHANGE A ROLL OF PAPER. Then they continued making to go orders. No one thought to triage what was sitting in the shop and make those first. There were seven people waiting at this point. Someone called in a phone order and that was put through before my juice was started, and this was 15 minutes after ordering. I know this comes across a bit Karen, but we need to teach young employees of businesses like this how to handle busy days, when equipment breaks, etc. Nothing was communicated to any of us sitting in the shop. I feel bad for the employees when something like this happens - I have worked food service so I understand. But communicating goes a long way, and there was none here.

My son loves his Mango Fresca, I got a mango smoothie with chamoy sauce, They also have a chip that she sprinkles lime juice and some kind of sauce on. It was delicious! Omg there's a corn dish that if I were in walking distance I'd walk here to get that! I think the Taco Loco is the one that had slivers of pork skin in it. They have a lot of things- esquites (corn in a cup w/ cheese & mayo- so like elotes but in a cup), elotes, tamales (these might be seasonal, I'm not sure), fruit cups, hot cheetos with cheese, mangonada, fresca con crema, bionico, diablito, chamoyada, chicharron preparado, smoothies, crepes, etc. I haven't tried everything, in fact, I've only gotten their fruit cups with mango and tajin because I'm a creature of habit and it's an amazing, healthy snack on the go. Next time I venture into the mall I'll definitely try some of their other foods. My mom didn't know what tajin or chamoy was and wasn't sure how she'd like it on fruit. I tried to explain it because I'd eaten it a lot when I lived in California briefly- she's pretty open minded so she agreed to go in and check it out. The employees here were the absolute sweetest and prepared a little sample to let her try a bit of both before she committed. She ended up ordering a mixed fruit cup including watermelon, mango, and cucumber and chose the tajin. She loved it! This place is very spacious and clean looking. There's also pretty close to an entrance of the mall- right under the food court- so it's really convenient, even if you don't want to go into the mall at all! I hope this place stays open because I really love it and recommend it to everyone I know who lives in the area.

Ya know, it's weird that this has been in my drafts for forever. But I like this place. I like that…read morethey were down with the açaí bowl situation before it was cool (or at least, before it became de rigeur and/or spread to the damp and drippy PNW). I started chowing down on smoothie bowls in sunny southern California and the majorest of major metros like Manhattan, and it seems like it took forever for the "trend" to spread to our rainy neck of the woods. One could certainly get wheatgrass shots every which where, but smoothie bowls, not so much. ANYWAY, Carioca Bowls was leading the vanguard of delish and genuine açaí bowls in PDX long before it was an expected food variety in all hippie-ish towns in the US. Their bowls meet my exacting ingredient standards: Now that smoothie bowls have gone mainstream, many are just lightly disguised dessert with "health food" marketing: Hidden sweeteners and grody additives pushed on the unsuspecting hoi polloi ruin it for people who don't do their homework. But not Carioca Bowls: You can ACTUALLY get an unsweetened açaí bowl if that's your jam (it's mine: If I wanted dessert, I'd get a cupcake), and they don't drown the top in honey (honey has its place, and that place is far away from me), and drink in the extremely second-wave granola vibes while you're at it. Third-wave hippie food, like third-wave coffee shops, have suffered a loss of soul: Minimalist design, LED lighting, and cookie-cutter staff with vaseline smiles beckoning "welcome in!" with vacant looks in their eyes have sapped a lot of the joy from the spaces serving hippie food and matcha tea. Carioca Bowls remains a comfortingly messy, quirky callback to sincerity: Murals, houseplants, low lighting, a big messy garden-y space outdoors for sitting and chowing, organic unfussy aesthetics that make the whole scene just feel welcoming and comfy. You can eat your bowl here and not feel like you're a nuisance to the staff, or like there's a glaring spotlight on you (unlike SOME smoothie/juice/bowl places I could mention). Nary a whiff of extruded white plastic ANYWHERE in this place. It makes me feel at home, the way a wheatgrass-sniffin', long-hair-havin', big-hug-givin' hippie should feel. When I walk through the door, I feel RELAXED, ya know what I mean? Anyway, give it a try - this isn't my 'hood but I will still occasionally make a pilgrimage just to get a bowl and drink in the vibes. So if I were writing a Michelin guide (buy those tires!) I suppose I'd give this at least a star, as it's worth a special trip (IF you're into what I've described here - it's highly specific, but it's MY vibe). Anyway, long live Carioca Bowls!
