In my opinion this is the most historic and unique restaurant & piano bar in the galleria area. It takes something special to be in business for 4 decades on Westheimer Rd. The atmosphere on a busy night at Fuads is like no other in town. It kind of feels like you have walked in to an old restaurant in New York or New Orleans when you go to Fuads. The restaurant is long, narrow, dark, candle lit and Geoff is typically on the piano playing some great music as patrons gather around. I really can't name any other restaurant in Houston like it. Everyone should go at least once to check it out, even if it isn't their cup of tea.There is no menu, but many selections from steak, lamb, veal, fish, etc. that you can customize with many sauces and sides. In many cases the salad, main course or dessert is cooked or prepared table side. The have an enormous wine list and many liquors to choose from. The prices of the entrees and alcohol are not cheap but not over priced either. If you are dining on a budget or used to chain restaurants it may not be for you. read more

A friend of mine highly recommended this restaurant, so we made 6:00 reservations this past Saturday. I didn't understand why the reviews I'd read said this restaurant was too dark as it was decently lit when we arrived. However, after about an hour, the lights were dimmed, and I finally understood. I actually enjoyed both atmospheres - it was nice to see what the place looked like in both scenarios. We started with the wine list. I have to say, it's not the most inspired wine list I've seen. And the markup is incredible, but that's not atypical for nice restaurants. (Catalan and Ibiza being notable exceptions.) We drank the Kathryn Kennedy Lateral -- a good (not great) choice. The chef then came out to talk to us, and that was a nice twist. I would go again just for that opportunity. I had the lobster bisque, which was absolutely amazing. It's one of the first times I've had lobster in a soup that didn't consist of tiny chunks -- this included good-sized pieces of lobster that actually tasted like lobster. Really good - I ate all the lobster and saved the remaining broth to take home. My husband had a crab cake, which had very little breading and a wonderful mustard sauce. I highly recommend both. We then had the Caesar salad, which they make at your table. (I haven't seen that since my La Tour d-Argent or Harry's Kenya days.) Excellent. Entrees -- hub had veal in a white wine with capers sauce. Pretty good, but nowhere near as good as my rack of lamb. That was exceptional. Not too much lamb taste (which for me is NOT a plus), but the meat quality and herbs on it made it an outstanding, melt-in-your-mouth dish. I would go back just for that. Dessert - Bananas Foster. It was fun to watch it being made - lots of ceremony. The flavor is better at Brennan's, but the presentation was better here. More theatrical. It's heightened by the fact the restaurant is so dark - the flames really stand out. The only downside for me was the vegetables - a plate of broccoli, carrots, brussel sprouts, and cream-sauced potatoes that were nowhere near the quality of the rest of the meal. Still, not bad, and not enough to knock down the five stars this restaurant earned that night. The service was attentive but not overbearing. Food was delicious, or it could have been the fact that we waited 1 1/2 hours before we got it that biased our opinion. Other than the food the whole experience was horrible. We went for Valentine's Day dinner. No one was at the door to greet or sit you down. When we were shown to our table it was a small table against the wall elbow to elbow with other tables. If you plan to have a conversation with your date be prepared to have everyone hear what you are saying, The waiter served us a basket of toasted bread...and that's it. No butter or anything. Another waiter later came by and asked if we would like more butter. More...as in he thought we had some already. About 30 minutes in we got a menu. No prices and no explanation as to how to order. After a few minutes the waiter/chef came by and asked what we wanted. This by far was the reason this restaurant got one star. This gentleman acted as if he knew us and had a personal vendetta against us. Rude and condescending is the only way he can be explained. He expected us to order the appetizer, soup or salad, and entree at the same time. He did not take our order for an appetizer since we had not realized that he wanted the full night's meal planned by us already. After an hour he came back and we decided to just order a salad and our entree because of the treatment we had already received. We actually thought of leaving but knew we were not going to find anything else on Valentines night. The food came, an hour and a half after we were seated. We enjoyed our meal and the house merlot was tasty. The waiter/chef never came back to ask if we wanted dessert . I heard him point to our table and tell one of the waiters that we were done and to clear off our plates. Without asking. We were given 3 different checks at the end of the night. All in all it seems like a place built for this little man and his ego. It is very sad because when we first got there we thought it was a cute little place and were excited to try it. We had heard of the bananas foster which was not on the menu that night either. I've read some great reviews here about this place and maybe they are better suited for slow nights and regulars. This is probably the only restaurant in town where the chef would talk to you and maybe make you something you would even like better off the menu once he knows what your likes and dislikes are. Okay, it's something different to give Fuad's four stars. This place is very interesting to me....The service wasn't all that spectacular from our waiter of two times now, but this host was indeed very curteous and friendly as always. we've only been here a couple of times and phoned several. I love that we can order what we want, but the food isn't always going to come out as you expect it to, so i'm not going to brag that any food you order will come out great. The chef is nice, good memory in faces, kind of laid back. This place is like an upscale Cheers to me. Everybody seemed to know everyone there, singing along with the piano, dancing, its so free spirited in there! We came with our baby son and one other diner just randomly walked up to us and folded one of our napkins into a bunny for our six month old son. Our baby seemed to like it, in a typical event this would be odd, but here it's just what comes natural and was interesting. The seafood is out of this world, I love their seabass and swordfish, or I think that it was swordfish. Either way it's good, I think it was the owner/manager i came across who looked at our table the whole time sending people to check on us if we were okay and asked me himself. So attentive, besides our waiter. It's so dark in there by the way, bring a flashlight to look at your food. This is the only restaurant I would come to in thiss complex, I've been to the melting pot...not good for groups, so it wwas too slow for us..good for a date though...I've been to the Palm...personally I think it's overpriced for food that delivers just a decent cheer to it, the atmosphere is what gets you going though. This is an interesting place...expect fine dining as a free spirit. Food was wonderful in terms of seafood and their chicken appetizer, but dessert was decent, steak was too tough for medium rare. We went to Fuad's for Houston Restaurant Weeks ready to be pleased. The menu looked great and when we sat down, the wine list was excellent. We were very pleased with the wine we chose, which was reasonably priced and delicious. That was our last good experience. We can hardly believe we paid $45 for food whose awfulness was equalled only by the service. Our first course--escargot for my dining companion and mushrooms with lump crab for me, was tasteless and lukewarm. Both improved slightly better with seasoning, lemon for the escargots and salt for the mushrooms, but were still poor. Our second course was salad. His was supposed to have a bleu cheese dressing, which it did not; mine was supposed to have a special house dressing. We guessed that the gravy boat full of dressing that came on his plate was my dressing, but that would mean he didn't get any, so we shared it. We thought we would let the waiter know about the missing bleu cheese dressing when he came to ask how everything was, but the waiter never did that with any of the courses. The true low point of the meal, however, was the roast duck breast with cherries. The person we spoke to at the beginning of the meal, who may have been the owner--he never introduced himself--said that it had been cooked for one or two hours. This gave us pause, and I ordered the filet of beef instead. My companion, not without misgivings, ordered the duck. The duck was AWFUL. It was dried out and tasted terrible. We wound up splitting my filet (my idea), which was at least cooked as ordered and tasted decent with the sauce and a generous helping of salt. We also received a common plate of sides to share: potatoes au gratin and vegetables cooked in a manner so as to render them virtually without flavor. I didn't know it was possible to ruin asparagus, but this restaurant accomplished that difficult feat. Of course, having to add salt is a good way to become thirsty very quickly. The first waiter we managed to flag down to ask for more water said yes and never came back. Fortunately the second one refilled the water glasses. We watched the owner and the chef making the rounds of the other tables and greeting people warmly whom they obviously knew. Neither of them stopped by ours to ask how we were doing, which was probably a good decision on their parts, because we would have told them. Things initially appeared to get better at dessert. I had ordered the Flaming Bananas Foster, while my companion ordered the Cherries Jubilee. The bananas were indeed flamed tableside. The waiter who performed the task then walked away without a word, leaving the bananas to sit in the pan, and returned five minutes later with a goblet of half-melted ice cream onto which he spooned the bananas--thankfully, still warm and not burned--as well as the Cherries Jubilee, which consisted of four warm cherries in a similar goblet of half-melted ice cream. The restaurant was rather dark when we entered and the lights were further dimmed twice during our meal. I wound up having to use the flashlight on my cell phone a number of times, especially to check that my steak was done as ordered. The passageway to the restrooms is partially blocked by boxes and there are no handicapped stalls in either the men's or the women's room. I cannot believe this is okay with ADA regulations. On the way out of the restaurant, we saw a framed sign that said, "As long as satisfaction is a personal ideal, we will cherish each guest's approval and strive to exceed your expectations. --Kamal Darvishi, Fuad's." Apparently satisfaction has ceased to be a personal ideal at Fuad's. With the exception of a remarkably incompetent and recently-closed Wendy's, this is the worst restaurant meal I have ever had. It is without exception the most disappointing meal I have ever had. If Fuad's reason for participating in Houston Restaurant Weeks is to drive potential new customers away, they have succeeded extremely well. read more

Easy to miss nestled in a typical retail strip center. Mood is dim and a little romantic. Food is good. There is no menu, chef cooks up whatever he wants or what you ask for. Pricing is TBD, so dont be surprised when the bill comes. If you are ok with the "up in the air" feeling and dont mind dropping a couple hundred bucks its a good place to eat. My girlfriend and I like to visit this place every couple months as it has an amazing old-school charm. The food is beautifully prepared and the staff are very attentive. Last night made me love this place even more when Joseph (the chef) helped me setup an intimate moment for me to propose to my now fiance. I found a deal on Restaurant.com for Fuad's and decided to try it out for my anniversary dinner. We've eaten at places with no menus and enjoy having the chef recommend entrees. Fuad's chef did a great job based on our requests. He whipped up an appetizer of cheese, prosciutto, salami, and crackers. We both wanted fish for dinner, so he made us a delicious tuna steak and salmon filet with an extensive variety of vegetables (potatoes, broccoli, green beans, brussel sprouts, carrots, cauliflower, and spinach). We had great wine and excellent service from the staff. I was worried given the mixed reviews online, but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it wasn't overly expensive. I recommend this place for dinner or simply drinks at the bar or piano. read more

First, I have really liked Fuads over the last few years that I have been going. I often will take a first date there for an mature dining experience where the food is usually good to excellant. I enjoy that they remember, not only my name, but my drink. As a matter of fact, on my first visit when I asked for my favored Bourbon and they didn't have it, they showed up about ten minutes later with a bottle they went and purchased. There "no menu" policy has a certain charm that adds to the experience when the chef comes a sits with you and asks what you want to eat tonight, and then makes it. However, ya knew it was coming, I took a young lady to dinner there for Valentine Dinner last night (2012). Ok, Fuads is not cheap and with no menu or price list it is a bit of a crap shoot. I have usually spent around $120.00 for dinner for two and have "trusted" fair/consistant pricing. Last night though I had sticker shock when the check was presented and the price was almost 300% more than usual. Well over the mid $300.00's + tip (not mention tip was not mentioned if included since of the holiday premium). Interestingly, there WAS a menu last night. I can understand that on a night that had the place full...however, no pricing listed. We ONLY had the entre, a small steak and a very small lobster tail (and there hot veggie platter), no desert, appitizer etc. We had three adult beverages, tea and a soda. When I go out, usally price is not my main concern however, my date laughed at the look on my face that I allowed to slip at my suprise. I was not alone, my date, the gracious lady she is, pointed out she saw/heard a couple of other patrons that appraoched the matrede', JR, expressing their supprise as well. She said they too had the same blood rushed out of their face pale look that had flashed across my face. That being said, we had a very nice time in this romantic, ecletic "known by the inner Houston crowd" that most would never go to unless taken by a loyal patron. Ok, here is the real rub. I am a loyal and vocal fan of Fuads, but, I really feel betrayed and a bit disrespected and do not feel there was any sharred loyalty. I can understand a mark up for this type of holiday but this seems extreme. When I called to make reservations nothing was mentioned at the change for the night. I do not think if I would have gone to "The Palm (in the same strip center) I would have had this type of suprise . My dad used to own a handful of restaurants around Houston back in the 70's and while it is a tough business, loyatly to dinners can make a difference. Will I go back....likely so, however, I will be keeping my ears and eyes open for a simaliar type of place that I can enjoy the atmosphere and conversations with my date. Fuads has been my "go to" place for several years if I wanted romance and, yes, a place to impress for its ecletic, continental charm, but now I am in the market. Suggestions?? read more

Went to lunch with three friends and wound up staying three hours. We started with their famous "Roadkill" appetizer (which includes spicy quail, shrimp and crab meat), followed by three steaks and lamb chops which were prepared exactly as ordered with a side of fresh vegetables for the table. We washed it down with some excellent California Cabernet from their wine cellar and finished the meal with flaming Bananas Foster, prepared table side. I love this restaurant! Its probably one of the oldest Memorial/River Oaks area hang-outs near the Galleria by far. I'm surprised to see below that some people don't like this place, it can be a tad pricey but the food and atmosphere are incomparable imo. They have all types of dishes some that they prepare at your table. They actually wheel a cart out to your table and make the casear salad, steak dianne and bannas foster at the table right in front of you. They also flame the rack of lamb(probably the best in Houston that I have had) at the table. It is a small, dark, fun little spot off of Westheimer in the same shopping strip as the Palm and Melting Pot. The owner told me they have been there for 30 years! I'm gonna list off what I have had here and vouch for personally. Fillet- like butter! Ribeye Bacon Wrapped Quail/Shrimp Lobster/Lobster macaroni Chilean Sea bass Caviar Escargot Red fish Rack of Lamb Chicken Parmesan Lasagna Chicken/Shrimp Alfredo Veal Pescada Veal Chop Pork Chop Chicken Fried Steak or Chicken Fried Chicken Chicken Strips Beef/Chicken Kabob and rice Salmon Tabbouleh/Chicken Tabbouleh Hummus/Hummus Shrimp Cocktail Beef/Chicken Quesadillas Pizza Hamburgers and fries Nachos Crepes Bananas Foster Cherry Jubilee Cheesecake They have plenty more selections than that, but that just the food I have had there before. To the vegetarian reviewer below I must say I disagree about the Hummus and the Tabbouleh, both are very good to me..the Chicken Tabbouleh is great! Fuad's has some vegetable dishes but they mostly cater to meat-eaters like myself. I have to give Fuads 5 stars for obvious reasons. The food is great. I have never been to a restaurant in Houston that has a similar atmosphere as Fuads. It reminds me of a restaurant you would find in NYC, long and narrow, dark and candlelit. Its really unique to me. Also, you can literally get anything you want at almost anytime you want it! The selection is endless. I cant forget to include that this place usually stays open till about 2 am, sometimes the kitchen is open until 2 am! Not recommended for vegetarian, this restaurant don't have a menu, the chef told he will prepare some vegetarian special dishes, one of the dish was tasting stale, and smell was YUKKKKKKKKK...... When we asked the chef he argued back and resistant to accept that food was stale. Despite providing stale food, the total price for the horrible food was 60$ for 2 dishes for lunch on weekday. I don't recommend this place especially for VEGETARIAN people.. You will end up eating some food that tastes bad and pay far more than it deserves. I hate this place!!!! read more

Went to Fuad's last night.Overall the food was mediocre. Chilean Sea bass was too greasy. Shrimp cocktails were good. Both were overpriced. Most important concern was that after being seated and eating dinner, we went to the piano bar. We were RUDELY told to leave the piano bar and go to the back bar because they were having a private party in the piano bar area We believe that we should have been told that we were not going to be able to enjoy the piano bar BEFORE they served our overpriced dinner. Well....I am sad to write rhis review. I have been going to Fuads since the 80's. My previous experiences had been a culinary delight mixed with a romantic and warm atmosphere. Had not been there in a long time but wanted to treat a very special friend to a quiet, romantic dinner. The Fuads I knew does not exist even though the same people run it. The food was less than average. My lamb pops were smothered in a sauce that made it impossible to taste the lamb and the sauce was not a good tasting sauce. She had the filet that came with a completely tastless sauce. You could make a better salad at a salad bar. The side vegetables were over cooked and tasted like frozen food. The potatos au gratin were bland. To make matters worse, the temperature in the resaurant could not have been above 60 degrees. When asked how our food was, I was honest with chef. He was in complete denial about the state of his product. He said that the reason I did not like it was because my palate was probably not sophistcated enough to appreciate his mastery. No chef, your mastery has disolved and you are coasting on your past laurels. The front of the house service was lackluster to boot. Sadly, I will not return or accept the chef's invitation to come back so he can dumb down his food so I will like it. read more

Classic, old-school and fun in every way. If Dean Martin was alive and living in Houston, this would be his favorite place. I'd compare the vibe to Dan Tana's or The Dresden in LA. The dark interior, staff in tuxedos and piano player really takes you back to a different era. Personally, I love the food too. Is it expensive? When the check arived I stated to laugh. Our not so special meal was $100. I think I would have rather spent that money at McDonalds, at least I would have been satisfied with my food. When we sat down we were served crackers and butter. Not even fresh bread :( We were excited to try a restaurant where we could order whatever we wanted. What we got was home cooking 101. Cold and a mess. I guess we were young and my wife didn't have a huge ring. We are both teachers, but like goinf out on the weekends. We usually treat ourselves to a nice meal and I don't mind paying, if the food tasts good. My fish was horrible- I didn't care to make a scene in front of my wife. When the bill came and I found out the fish was $35 dollars- the bill $100- I told my wife to wait outside. We have never been charged that much for fish! After a polite confrentation about the bill, and the owner's suggestion to call the cops, he adjusted the bill. If you want bad food and a chance to apper on an episode of COPS! You too can have a disappointing meal at Fuad's. read more
