Wow this place really blew me away. It's a near perfect spot for a business lunch or dinner (or if you're willing to splurge with your own money for a good meal or a hot date). I wasn't sure what to expect based on the name of the restaurant, but essentially their seafood options are spectacular. And it feels like an exclusive club because the decor and service are both very much high class and special. We tried the coconut shrimp as the appetizer and really liked it. It was lightly fried and the shrimp was cooked to perfection - not under and not over. I would highly recommend this one to start. Loved it. If you're looking for a fair-priced meal, they have lots of salad and sandwich options. I tried the salmon poke bowl and it was so delicious. The fish was extremely fresh, and all the flavors blended together really well. It was like a healthy party in my mouth. It was great decision. You wanna splurge a bit and live large like YOLO? You gotta get the crab cake. Now, how good can a crab cake be? Well, if you're paying close to $50 for one crab cake, you better believe it's gonna be freaking awesome. And alas, it was. Best crab cake I've ever had in my life, no joke. And I've tried a lot of crab cakes in my many decades of dining out. I was excited to finally try Balboa Surf Club since I drive by it all the time and it's located near several of my favorite restaurants. Unfortunately, this turned out to be one of the most disappointing dining experiences I've had in quite some time. We had an 8:00 PM reservation but weren't seated until around 8:30 PM. While delays happen and I was willing to overlook that, the experience only went downhill from there. We ordered Palomas to kick off our Friday night. The drinks took quite a while to arrive, and when they did, they were noticeably watered down. I politely mentioned it to our server, who quickly took them back and brought replacements, which I appreciated. Unfortunately, the second round was nearly identical to the first. When I brought it up again, instead of acknowledging the feedback, the server responded by saying it was "just not a sugary drink." That completely missed the point. I wasn't expecting a sweet cocktail--I was pointing out that the drinks tasted diluted and poorly made. What bothered me most wasn't the drinks themselves, but how the feedback was handled. I wasn't looking for free drinks or trying to be difficult. I was simply offering honest feedback, and it felt like my opinion was being dismissed rather than heard. Unfortunately, the food didn't redeem the experience. We ordered several dishes to get a good sense of the menu, and most were overwhelmingly salty. The salt overpowered any other flavors to the point that we couldn't finish some of the dishes. The sushi was the best thing we had, but even that lacked the presentation and quality I would expect at this price point. To be fair, the manager did remove the drinks from our bill as a courtesy, and I appreciate that gesture. However, by that point the damage had already been done. A resolution is only effective when guests feel heard and respected throughout the process. Instead, I felt like I had to defend my opinion and justify my feedback before anyone took it seriously. At the end of the day, a restaurant can be trendy, crowded, and beautifully designed, but none of that matters if the food and service don't deliver. Balboa Surf Club has the atmosphere and location, but in my experience it falls short where it matters most. Overall, I'm glad I finally tried it because I had always been curious, but now I know I won't be back and cannot recommend it. If you're looking for a similar concept, I'd recommend Hudson House. The atmosphere is comparable, but the drinks are consistently well-made, the food is much better, and the service has always been far superior. read more

I've been hesitant to come to Balboa Surf Club because the menu always seemed too random. There are very few times where a place exceeds my expectations, and Balboa did. The decor was a combo of old money Houston and mid-century mod. Lots of plants, lots of wood. Very dim. Service was slow but attentive and friendly. There are no mocktails on the drink menu, but they have a few on deck. They can also custom make you one. My husband ordered a Paloma and stated that it was very strong. For an app, we got the coconut shrimp. 10/10 -- well fried, coconut forward. Fun and easy bites. We also got the salmon roll and thought it was refreshing. Light umami, sauce was not needed. For our mains, we got the cheeseburger and redfish. My husband does not love seafood, but he devoured the redfish. It was flaky, buttery, with lots of crab. The burger was ok -- it reminded me of an elevated Big Mac. It was not a bad burger, but it wasn't that melty, gooey, buttery number some of us love. Get the lemon meringue. Magnificent! I'm sad that it took me so long to find this restaurant! For starters, everything about this restaurant is high end and gorgeous and the attention to detail is impressive. The entrance is beautiful and the staff was very welcoming and friendly. We had a reservation and were seated promptly, but I noticed the restaurant filling quickly around noon so you should definitely make a reservation. Our server was upbeat and knowledgeable and gave us his recommendations which I greatly appreciated. The coconut shrimp batter was tasty and crispy and the shrimp was perfectly fried. I ordered the crab cake based on my yelp research and the servers recommendation. The crab cake was the best one I've ever had. The amount of crab was generous and the seasoning was outstanding. Went in for a work lunch. Ordered the salmon and subbed the Napa salad with a Caesar salad. Both the salad and salmon were delicious! The salmon was cooked perfectly, easy to slice into with just a fork and had some crispy corners on top. The servers stayed on top of water refills and were friendly. It had a nice atmosphere and would probably be really nice at night. A funny note: I love to people watch and all the servers are constantly walking around, like they make practical circles around the place I got a tiny bit motion sickness haha! Everything is made in house, from the burger buns to all the desserts-- pretty impressive~ Our top picks were the stone crab claws and the tuna frites + chocolate cream pie for dessert! ** Nigiri platter (4/5): this came with tuna, salmon, and scallop which was super creamy. A little let down that the salmon was served more in a gunkan maki form (battleship style like the usual spicy chopped scallop) than a true nigiri. But everything was fresh and still enjoyable~ ** Rainbow roll (4/5): your usual California roll but topped with tuna, salmon, and yellowtail + some heat with the slices of jalapeño and tanginess. Definitely creamy, but not overly mayo-y tasting. Happy we tried it~ ** Sashimi salad (5/5): loved the chopped Napa salad and that home sesame vinaigrette! Joseph took very good care of us and could answer any questions we had and has the most pleasant sense of humor and professionalism. Cocktails are very delicious and well balanced. Entrees we ordered were the SPICY AHI TUNA ROLL, SHASHIMI SALAD, THE MOROCCAN, THE TUNA BURGER, AND THE CRISPY CHICKEN BURGER. It was super clean and inviting, tons of natural light brightening up the restaurant. Started off the a glass of Sauvignon Blanc and we split the spicy tuna roll and coconut shrimp. We are not coconut fans but loved the coconut shrimp. The spicy tuna was fresh and very flavorful and delicious. For my meal I orders the tuna frites with a side of wasabi which really elevated the dish in my opinion. The tuna was seared to perfection and very flavorful. It offers upscale American seafood, sushi, salads, burgers, and steaks. The restaurant offers complimentary valet and a private parking lot. There are a lot of parking spaces available in this plaza. I do recommend making reservations online via Open Table for any occasion. Balboa Surf Club's interior decor is gorgeously upscale, sleek, and modern. It is divided into two spaces inside: the first with an open space with the outside light radiating the ten dining tables behind the hostess. The other more dim-lighted seating with green and brown sophisticated decor is the main dining area. There are outside dining options as well. FOOD: 1. Nigiri Plate (4/5; ahi tuna, salmon, and jumbo scallop): The nigiri slices for the ahi tuna, salmon, and scallops were amazing. My personal favorite was the scallop, which was 5/5. The other two (ahi tuna and salmon) were 4/5. 2. Coconut Shrimp (2/5; toasted coconut battered rock shrimp, with spicy mayo for dipping): We could not taste much of the toasted coconut. Otherwise, it is fried shrimp with a spicy mayo side. It could be better. 3. The Crab Cake (5/5; jumbo lump crab, served over lemon dill sauce with French fries): This is the best lump crab I've tried with a great serving size! It was so delicious, and the lemon dill sauce was heaven. I would order this again. There was a thin layer of breadcrumbs at the top with seasoning, that complemented the crab flavor. 4. Coconut Tres Leches (4/5): This was scrumptious! The cake was milky and creamy. I love it when the tres leches cake is more moist than dry from the condensed milk, and this one nailed it. The first time I came here I was in awe about the upscale look and ambience! I came for a business lunch and inside we were greeted by 2 hosts and then escorted to our table which our vendor had already arrived. We got a round corner booth for 4 people and this was perfect. I also noticed that around the room, there were several other business meetings happening because there were several groups of people who were wearing business professional outfits. Our server came out and greeted us and took our drink orders then we ordered some appetizers at some point but it took a minute for our server to come back to us. It wasn't necessarily busy but I also don't know if she was just giving us space because she saw we were talking? After ordering the appetizers, the food came out and she checked in on us and luckily came by to take our entree orders. Everything I ate was delicious and I really enjoyed the ambience. The interior itself was beautiful and I hope to be able to come back for a dinner service because our business partner mentioned that she had been there for dinner several times with her girlfriends and the dinner food was her favorite. The chef came out to greet us and also sent over 2 complimentary desserts which was so nice of him! I was really glad to get to try a dessert and it was delicious, I just wish I wasn't so full that I couldn't eat more! Service could be better but I'll give benefit of the doubt that the server was trying to be respectful but we would have also liked to order accordingly to keep the lunch meeting within the hour instead of 1.5 hours. read more
