"This is the rhythm of the night Baby, tonight's like fuego We 'bout to spend the dinero We party to the extremo" (Black Eyed Peas) Our visit to Fuego Mexican Grill today was the result of three simple factors lining up perfectly. #1 - We hadn't had Mexican food in quite a while, so correcting that deficiency was on our radar. #2 - We were already in Cromwell picking up our Travelers Championship volunteer packages. #3 - And for several reasons, we never managed to have an anniversary meal this year. Together, those factors made Fuego the natural choice -- and a very good one. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Walking into the dining room, we were struck by how stunning the room was. We saw dozens of ornate red/orange fire burst light fixtures on the ceiling. In fact, the ceiling had more than just light fixtures. It also had long cascading strands of white and pink flower garlands. There were cactus plants on the windowsills and huge murals of Mexican heritage imagery in the dining room, bar, and pretty much everywhere[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. . Our lunch started off when Valerie brought us a bowl of complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were terrific- a little thicker than others, but salt-free and addictive. The salsa was also very good -not watery and runny, just a little spicy, with plenty of onion, cilantro, and tomato chunks. For our food, we ordered a Traditional Quesadilla ($15.99) - described on the website as "Two flour tortillas, filled with melted cheese and shredded chicken or beef (we went with chicken), Sour cream, Guacamole and pico de Gallo on side" and an order of their Camarones Fuego ($23.99) - "Sauteed garlic shrimps with mushrooms in a spicy sauce. Served with white rice and salad". The food was delicious and the portions were very large. In fact, we took home more than we ate there, so it's almost like "Buy a lunch and get another one for free". My shrimp plate was great. First of all, it was definitely spicy, which was fine with me because I love that. It had a lot of shrimp and mushrooms, and probably more than a cup and a half of rice. The salad was a nice addition to the plate- lightly dressed Romaine, spinach, onions, and Cotija cheese. Valerie was pleasant and efficient throughout our visit. All in all, we really enjoyed our experience at Fuego. Improvement Opportunities I noticed some inconsistencies between their website pricing and descriptions when compared to the actual delivery of the dishes. Specifically, the quesadilla had a lower website price, and the Pico promised on the website was not delivered on our plate. I had an incredible experience at Fuego Mexican Grill. When we first walked in, the greeter was so lively and friendly honestly, he set the tone for what I thought would be a great experience. He sat us down, but we didn't like the spot, so when our waitress came, we asked if we could move. She said, "Yeah, go where you want," but that was it. We ended up carrying our own chips, salsa, and menus to the new table, which felt a little odd. From there, the service was... cold. She seemed annoyed that we didn't know right away what we wanted to drink or eat, and while she technically did her job, it didn't feel welcoming. As for the food, it was just okay. Arrived around 5:30PM last Friday evening & although the parking lot was packed, we had seating for 2 immediately upon arrival. We came for drinks and Guacamole and were very pleased with both. For dinner I order the TACOS DE BIRRIA for $17.99 it comes with 3 Soft corn marinated tortillas, filled with slow braised beef, melted cheese, onions, cilantro and queso fresco ,and homemade thick and flavorfull consome. I visited Fuego's relatively recently opened Brick and Mortar in Cromwell. They have food truck roots, but I'd describe the restaurant as a very well executed family style Mexican restaurant. The parking lot was fairly full at 5:40 on a Saturday night. There were open tables, but not many. The decor wasn't a particular selling point, but the inside was clean and nice and there were some cool lighting fixtures. Service was efficient and friendly. My one note on service is that we had five people sitting at a large circular table and it made sharing two salsas for the chips difficult. They brought us more salsa as we ran out, but we ran out a couple of different times. Not a big deal, but something to think about. I'm familiar with the Fuego Food Truck (it was often at GastroPark), but I never ate their food. I assumed the food was going to be good given Fuego's reputation, but I was eating with some family members who can be hard to be please and some of them don't eat a lot of Mexican food. This was a borderline miracle in my family. Everybody liked their food. My Tacos Birria were very good. The tacos were packed with tender shredded beef. It had a shreddable pot roast sort of consistency. The tacos had a good crispy texture and were well topped with queso fresco, cilantro and pickled onions. The beef consommé was also good. The side of pinto beans were decent, but didn't move the needle for me. I tried a little bit of everybody's dishes, which included a carne asada dinner, a carne asada dinner, a shrimp burrito, and chicken nachos. Everything was good. The carne asada was very tender and flavorful. The small shrimp from the burrito were tender and the mild cheese sauce was tasty. The shredded chicken in the Chicken Nachos was well seasoned and tender. I assume they put the same chicken in burritos and enchiladas, and that's a good thing. The Greater Hartford area has a number of what I would describe as family style Mexican places, as opposed to Mexican restaurants trying to serve super high end authentic Mexican food. I placed an order over the phone, and it was repeated back to me the way I ordered it. I go to pick the order up and it's still not ready when I get there so I patiently wait even though I felt like I gave them enough time between me ordering and my arrival to the restaurant. I leave with my order then realize they didn't give me one of the items I ordered so I call the restaurant, and the hostess says if the order was put in incorrectly so I can return and they'll give me the item for free for the inconvenience of their mistake. We stopped by Fuego yesterday for lunch. Pretty large restaurant with lots of seating option. Staff was very friendly, professional, and attentive. Being a new restaurant it felt very clean and well maintained. The ambiance is modern and comfortable. The menu has many options and kinda a different take on modern Mexican cuisine. We had the Carne Asada Burrito $19. It didn't come with any sides. But the flavor was very good and it was loaded with all the usual fixings. We also had the Enchiladas Verdes $17 which was good as well, but again no sides of rice and beans. I think the prices were a little higher than average for this style cuisine for this area. But they did also have some lunch specials which were slightly less. The meal was served with complimentary chips and salsa too. I would go back again. Food was good, I like the establishment. I was SOO excited for Fuego Mexican Grill to open. What they did with the decor was phenomenal and I expected the food to be equally extraordinary! We did go on their first night, so I chalk some things up to learning curve, but other things not so much. PROS: -first drinks were great -chips and free salsa were fresh and tasty -other sauces were fresh and tasty, tasted homemade rather than like food service sauces -the water guy was extraordinarily on point! -everyone was nice -flaming drink was cool CONS: -we were ignored for about 10 minutes after being seated, in spite of only 3 tables being full in the dining room, and 8 servers standing around -drinks were slow to come out -drink menu does not display prices and all drinks are not equally priced -there were no spicy sauces - everyone kept telling me they'd bring a spicy sauce but none were spicy (we tried 3 sauces in addition to salsa) -queso was bland and plain - I combined it with my non spicy sauces for some extra flavor -my husband's fajitas didn't come out sizzling, though those from another table did. The fajitas were mediocre and lacking flavor - Chili's has better fajitas. The fajita accompaniment plate was unappetizing to look at and the rice and beans were bland. -camarones Fuego was not Fuego! Bland served with plain unseasoned white rice (not even salted!) and a DRY side salad. 20 min in when my server showed back up, I asked for dressing and she brought ranch, gross. -service was very slow and our server would simply disappear from the room for 10-20 minutes at a time. Drinks took 20-25 min. This is probably more of a first day issue that I'm sure will improve. -my second drink tasted as if it had no alcohol at all, just tart grapefruit juice. This newer place is soooo good. A former 99 restaurant, they completely transformed it and it's stunning inside! Food was so good, the chips and salsa you get when you sit are fantastic- some of the best salsa I've had in a long time.
