I had the Seafood Chimichanga and it was cooked to perfection. It was nice and crispy on the outside and packed with flavor. We also ordered the Carne Asada Burrito and the Molcajete. Everything was so authentic and the portions were great. You can really tell they put a lot of effort into the presentation and the taste. The service was top notch and the staff made sure we had everything we needed throughout the night. I do enjoy stopping into this restaurant from time to time, but I do find it a bit pricey. You typically don't get rice and beans with your meal, which makes the overall cost feel even higher. Fuego occupies an enviable corner at the intersection of Rt. 372 and Shunpike Road, formerly the 99 Restaurant. I was familiar with the location but surprised to see the changes. The space seems huge and indeed, there were quite a few larger parties in attendance that were handled with ease. The staff was competent, and the food was mostly good. The chicken taquitos were crispy, but the enchiladas verdes were just okay. The shredded chicken was dry and it doesn't even come with a side of rice. Another visit to Fuego since it has been a while eating good Mexican food. Family down from upstate New York and it was the ultimate place to go. There is always that friendly welcome from the concierge and the 'best table' in the house. Skipped the table-side Guac this time much to my chagrin. Since it was Sunday there was no lunch menu to tempt me and I got the Tacos Pulpo. This plate of food is huge and filled with the freshest ingredients. The octopus was tender and sweet and it comes on flour tacos [my favorite]. The red cabbage salad is amazing. I thought that the leftovers would make a great lunch tomorrow but there was not a shred of evidence left on my plate. Had a chat with the owner and we filled in each other about the neighborhood. When we first walked in, the greeter was so lively and friendly honestly, he set the tone for what I thought would be a great experience. He sat us down, but we didn't like the spot, so when our waitress came, we asked if we could move. She said, "Yeah, go where you want," but that was it. We ended up carrying our own chips, salsa, and menus to the new table, which felt a little odd. From there, the service was... cold. She seemed annoyed that we didn't know right away what we wanted to drink or eat, and while she technically did her job, it didn't feel welcoming. As for the food, it was just okay. It didn't look like the photos and honestly felt a bit thrown together. I got the carne asada and the rice had zero flavor (definitely the worst part of the meal). My friend's lobster enchiladas were really good! The drinks were also just okay. Not bad, but definitely not memorable. We even ended up ordering two drinks each, which I usually never do, just to give them another shot. Also the decor was beautiful but I fully decorated restaurant! I placed an order over the phone, and it was repeated back to me the way I ordered it. I go to pick the order up and it's still not ready when I get there so I patiently wait even though I felt like I gave them enough time between me ordering and my arrival to the restaurant. I leave with my order then realize they didn't give me one of the items I ordered so I call the restaurant, and the hostess says if the order was put in incorrectly so I can return and they'll give me the item for free for the inconvenience of their mistake. So, I return and she tells me I have to now pay because the manager said I had to so now I'm frustrated because it's a bunch of back and forth and now, I have to wait again. Fuego is beautiful, the perfect spot for pictures! Each section of the restaurant has its own unique style. The servers were welcoming. The margaritas are good! They have a happy hour menu with selected options (wine, beer, plain margaritas (no flavors), wings, taquitos, nachos, quesadilla ($6) ). The food on the other hand not so great. We ordered, birria tacos, fuego bowl, and the entire happy hour menu. The best thing were the wings! Maybe the reg menu nachos are better, but it's literally store bought chips and fixings thrown on top. The fuego bowl didn't have much flavor, reminded me more of hibachi chicken. Anyone else love Mexican restaurants in their 20s and eat way too many free chips and salsa with your margs to save money and fill up so you didn't need to order an app? The hubby was flying home on Valentine's Day, so I spent the night out celebrating Galentine's Day at Fuego! The place was packed, parking lot full and service was still great! We loved our drinks (and mocktail) and all of our dishes; no one had leftovers to take home! My carne asada burrito was big, filling and the flavors were perfect together! Surprisingly, salmon was on the menu here and I didn't order it. But my friend did and I heard great things! I did frequent a lot of Mexican restaurants back in the day, but they don't make it into my rotation often anymore. I love several spots but I know chips, salsa and guac are my weakness and my metabolism isn't the same, so I sort of try to avoid the temptation to binge on them too often. This is a 4.5 Review. I wish Yelp had half stars because the ONLY ding this place gets is for the Guak needing a little help. He made it at the table for me & I asked for it spicy, l but I was on the phone so I didn't watch him. It needed more jalapeños, more lime & salt & pepper, but after modifying it was delicious. I cannot say anything negative about the food or service. Staff was friendly & delightful. The rice, beans, plated guak, pickled onions & the pork (the star of the show) were all perfection! Even the table salsa was good. They make their own house Tabasco which was a little sweet with heat (not my favorite) but It complimented the salsa when combined & gave it that extra little kick. I cannot speak to the acoustics of the place because I went in near closing, so they were not full, but the music was pleasant, appropriate & at a good volume. My husband and I decided to try Fuego because of the reviews. Upon entering the restaurant, we found it to be clean and adorned with interesting decor. We ordered queso dip, flautas mexicanas, and chicken enchiladas verdes. While the food was edible, it was very plain and underwhelming. The prices were fair, but the flavor was lacking. Our waiter, Juan was very friendly and always made sure we had what we needed. We wanted to like Fuego, as CT seems to lack decent mexican food, but this place just fell short. Arrived around 5:30PM last Friday evening & although the parking lot was packed, we had seating for 2 immediately upon arrival. We came for drinks and Guacamole and were very pleased with both. For dinner I order the TACOS DE BIRRIA for $17.99 it comes with 3 Soft corn marinated tortillas, filled with slow braised beef, melted cheese, onions, cilantro and queso fresco ,and homemade thick and flavorfull consome. I visited Fuego's relatively recently opened Brick and Mortar in Cromwell. They have food truck roots, but I'd describe the restaurant as a very well executed family style Mexican restaurant. The parking lot was fairly full at 5:40 on a Saturday night. There were open tables, but not many. The decor wasn't a particular selling point, but the inside was clean and nice and there were some cool lighting fixtures. Service was efficient and friendly. My one note on service is that we had five people sitting at a large circular table and it made sharing two salsas for the chips difficult. They brought us more salsa as we ran out, but we ran out a couple of different times. Not a big deal, but something to think about. I'm familiar with the Fuego Food Truck (it was often at GastroPark), but I never ate their food. I assumed the food was going to be good given Fuego's reputation, but I was eating with some family members who can be hard to be please and some of them don't eat a lot of Mexican food. This was a borderline miracle in my family. Everybody liked their food. My Tacos Birria were very good. The tacos were packed with tender shredded beef. It had a shreddable pot roast sort of consistency. The tacos had a good crispy texture and were well topped with queso fresco, cilantro and pickled onions. The beef consommé was also good. The side of pinto beans were decent, but didn't move the needle for me. I tried a little bit of everybody's dishes, which included a carne asada dinner, a carne asada dinner, a shrimp burrito, and chicken nachos. Everything was good. The carne asada was very tender and flavorful. The small shrimp from the burrito were tender and the mild cheese sauce was tasty. The shredded chicken in the Chicken Nachos was well seasoned and tender. I assume they put the same chicken in burritos and enchiladas, and that's a good thing. The Greater Hartford area has a number of what I would describe as family style Mexican places, as opposed to Mexican restaurants trying to serve super high end authentic Mexican food. I'm not sure our family has had a better experience at any of those family style places. Fuego had my recommendation. 4.5 Stars read more

Although the decor isn't sure what it wants to be, the service and food more than make up for weird lights. Antonio was personable and friendly since the moment we arrived. He made us feel very welcome. As soon as we sat down, chips and salsa were placed in front of us. Chips were good, salsa was ok - not to my taste preference but I still ate it! I had their jalapeño passion fruit marg and it was really good! Spicy! For dinner me and my wife ordered a shredded chicken quesadilla to start and it was massive - it's not an app - it's a meal! Fuego means fire and this new eatery is ON FIRE. We chose the 4th of July weekend to try it out and it was a big bang with our family. We tried several food options, all delicious. We stopped by Fuego yesterday for lunch. Pretty large restaurant with lots of seating option. Staff was very friendly, professional, and attentive. Being a new restaurant it felt very clean and well maintained. The ambiance is modern and comfortable. The menu has many options and kinda a different take on modern Mexican cuisine. We had the Carne Asada Burrito $19. It didn't come with any sides. But the flavor was very good and it was loaded with all the usual fixings. We also had the Enchiladas Verdes $17 which was good as well, but again no sides of rice and beans. I think the prices were a little higher than average for this style cuisine for this area. But they did also have some lunch specials which were slightly less. The meal was served with complimentary chips and salsa too. I would go back again. Food was good, I like the establishment. I love Mexican food even if it's more an American Mexican. This was such a great gem to find in town. The place is clean and the staff were wonderful. Our waiter Antonio was the best! He answered all our questions and had great suggestions for meal selections. I ordered the traditional chicken quesadilla, it's def more like a meal I shared it with my husband. We stopped here finally and it was a great overall experience! To begin the service was attentive, enthusiastic and quick. The whole restaurant was decorated nicely for Halloween but aside from that the style was very traditional Mexican which I love. We ordered a festive drink, quesadilla and burger. I was SOO excited for Fuego Mexican Grill to open. What they did with the decor was phenomenal and I expected the food to be equally extraordinary! We did go on their first night, so I chalk some things up to learning curve, but other things not so much. PROS: -first drinks were great -chips and free salsa were fresh and tasty -other sauces were fresh and tasty, tasted homemade rather than like food service sauces -the water guy was extraordinarily on point! -everyone was nice -flaming drink was cool CONS: -we were ignored for about 10 minutes after being seated, in spite of only 3 tables being full in the dining room, and 8 servers standing around -drinks were slow to come out -drink menu does not display prices and all drinks are not equally priced -there were no spicy sauces - everyone kept telling me they'd bring a spicy sauce but none were spicy (we tried 3 sauces in addition to salsa) -queso was bland and plain - I combined it with my non spicy sauces for some extra flavor -my husband's fajitas didn't come out sizzling, though those from another table did. The fajitas were mediocre and lacking flavor - Chili's has better fajitas. The fajita accompaniment plate was unappetizing to look at and the rice and beans were bland. -camarones Fuego was not Fuego! Bland served with plain unseasoned white rice (not even salted!) and a DRY side salad. 20 min in when my server showed back up, I asked for dressing and she brought ranch, gross. -service was very slow and our server would simply disappear from the room for 10-20 minutes at a time. Drinks took 20-25 min. This is probably more of a first day issue that I'm sure will improve. -my second drink tasted as if it had no alcohol at all, just tart grapefruit juice. I'm sure elements of service will improve over time, but the food needs an overhaul. It was all around uninspiring. And I was a huge cheerleader for this place leading up to the opening, so it was a big disappointment! read more

This newer place is soooo good. A former 99 restaurant, they completely transformed it and it's stunning inside! Food was so good, the chips and salsa you get when you sit are fantastic- some of the best salsa I've had in a long time. Wish I took pictures but we ordered the tortilla soup, veggie quesadilla, steak and shrimp tacos. We all loved our meals (I got the shrimp tacos which was amazinggggggg!)
