This was once Chavas. I've been wanting to try it since it changed names/owners. I had a friend tell me they have a great taco Tuesday special! 5 street tacos with rice and beans for 7.99$ that's an incredible price. My steak tacos were delicious. They have a good smoky spicy salsa. The green salsa for the tacos was good! Margaritas are average, but priced so well. They have a cold white dip that's not super close to the local original recipe, but not bad. It's very spacious inside. I will definitely be back. It's crazy to be able to get a full meal and margarita for under $15 in this economy. Such a great deal! read more

When traveling we Always try to find somewhere new to eat...and we thought we had found on, but low and behold we have visited once before...2015 to be exact....we liked it then and we still do...Being this far out of the way and to see Birria Tacos on the menu was quite a shock....along with ChoriQueso that was just plain delicious...Building is older....has that Dive joint written all over it...service was good...very small town, and they all know each other. Wife went with the Flautas with ground beef and a side of rice...a huge side of rice we should have shared. I went with the Birria...its not Texas style birria, but the meat was super tender and had a great flavor...for the location they were excellent...the consome was beef broth with cilantro and onions...overall very good...beans were really good. Most of the reviews for this restaurant were positive, so I decided to give it a try. I was passing through town and craving a margarita. I listened to the advice from a few other posts and ordered the chicken fajita nachos. They were definitely delicious and I would recommend them due to the white queso. Unfortunately the margarita did not taste like it had any tequila in it, despite me confirming with the waitress. I ordered one frozen and one on the rocks, both were a let down. This use to be our go-to place for Mexican in Muskogee. They always had great service and great food. However, even pre-COVID, everything started going downhill. The quality and QUANTITY of the food has declined dramatically and they apparently have had to decrease their staffing because it has been extremely slow the last few times we've been. read more

We stopped here on our drive from Texas to Wisconsin. There were several positive reviews. The staff were gracious and gave quick service. The table where we were seated was dirty and had to be cleaned, including seats. The drink order was taken, and served quickly. The dinner choices we made were: Cheese Enchilada Plate Chicken Chimichanga Plate Kids Soft Taco Plate Dinner was served served quickly, but the cheese enchilada plate was cold, the enchiladas were not hot at all, in fact the cheese inside wasn't melted. The enchilada sauce on top was a thin red sauce that had an off sweet flavor. Both Bathrooms were disgusting with barely any room inside. Although the staff was friendly and we had quick service, we were not impressed with the food flavor, temperature, or atmosphere. read more

This is the worst mexican place i have ever ever been. It was clean and staff was very friendly. I ordered an al pastor california burrito. I got carnitas and pineapple in a tortilla smothered in cheese. Rice was half cooked. My mom ordered camaronies and got dry camaronies smothered in garlic powder. Waiter forgot our silver which my mom didn't like. We went here based on reviews. I live in Muskogee and eat here at least twice a week. The food is great and extremely cheap especially for the quality of service and food you get. I would recommend the #1 carne guisada (flour tortillas) , or the beef/spinach enchiladas. If your in Muskogee and looking for great Mexican food you definitely need to stop and try Chavas. read more

Excellent surprise in Muskogee. Let me begin for tbe benefit of my east coast friends. Dining in the heartland can be very hit or miss. Hits occur when the restaurant is authentic to its cuisine. There is some good BBQ, but quite a bit more that is very bad. I have had some of my worst steaks in the heart of beef country (Kansas and some other square states) and worst BBQ pork in pork country (Tennessee and the Carolinas). I cannot quite explain this, except that so many customers are completely without food experience or education. This is true everywhere, but more pronounced when the foodies do not reach a critical mass. For instance, I cannot tell you how many people believe themselves great on the charbroiling adventure, but cook with gas. Enough said. My point is meant to be simple. Sometimes, a community will have extremely authentic, flavorful food in their midst and be almost oblivious. Here we are at Chavas, a Mexican place. They serve "TexMex." Most people think this is Texas-inflenced Mexican cuisine, but it actually originated from the heavily chili based food of the Tejas Indians. These Texas natives have little to do with Mexico. The rice originates in the gulf region and the beans with pork based oil (lard) probably came with the European missionaries. Masa, the basis of tamales and true tortillas, is very native throughout Latin America. . Chavas serves tamales made in house. If you have ever seen the matrons of a family lead daughters and children, and a few willing men, in making tamales, you will understand how amazing this is. The two we had were soft delightful items. Premade have dense flavorless cornmeal. These were the opposite. The rest of our fare, a chili relleno, an enchilada, beans, rice, and even a taco all fit the stereotype TexMex combo meal. We even ordered a Chimichanga, a quitessential Arizona invention, to see how the chicken inside would be. These were all inspired and each with something special--not weird or fusion or precious--just true. The ground beef had a cherizo flavor, the cheese in the relleno was not a giant glob, even the beans were good. The chicken was seasoned with subtle, not hot, spice. This meal rose above the stereotype and was quite pleasing. The salsa was a bit pedestrian, but I am sure it conforms the the commom customer. The wave of salsa (a fully American adaptation) innovation is a few years away. Try roasting the ingredients. Unfortunately, the Muskogee water had a distinct dirt flavor, and until I squeezed a lime in it, almost ruined everything. (I did not want a third beer, even at 3 dollars and served in a mug so cold the beer was freezing--it was still 100 degrees outside.) We had a good time and far too much to eat. Good food, good service. It's much better than the El Charo's in town. Take the family there to eat on occasion, and we all enjoy it. I would say for authentic Mexican food this is THE place to eat in Muskogee. Do not waste your money at El Charo, El Chico or Hamlin's El Toro (that's just bull). This place deserves 4 stars for the beans alone. I had enchiladas that were good, but those beans - you can bet that if I am in Muskogee at mealtime, I will suggest this place. Hotel staff recommended this place and I'm glad they did. Went in for lunch and was please by the prices. Got the lunch skillet and it was a very large portion. Was able to save some for dinner. Service was great, chips were good, but the salsa was bland. So don't be afraid to ask for some spicy salsa and they will provide some for you. I stopped into Chava's on a whim, I wanted to try something new. I had a wonderful experience. My server was very prompt and polite! The food was delicious, absolutely no complains there. Everyone in our party had enjoyed Chava's in the past. Thursday evening our party of six encountered the worst food AND worst service imaginable. The food was both poorly prepared and poorly presented. The dining room was "nasty". Our most senior guest, stated "in 88 years, this was without a doubt, the worst food I've ever been served".
