Great food. The beef fried rice is awesome along with the sushi. It's a little pricey but I'm all for paying for quality.

Great service and cute little dining room keep me coming back to Fuji! The sushi is better than average but definitely not my favorite in NWI. They have a million choices of rolls plus a ton of other menu choices. It's close to home and way better than grocery store sushi so I am thankful they remain open. Umami! I absolutely love this place - the sushi is fresh and never tastes 'fishy', the service is friendly, the prices are very reasonable, and the presentation is lovely. Over many trips, I've tried the dragon roll, snow roll, ebi asparagus, butterfly, fancy, green river, and more that I can't remember. Through all of these, I've never been disappointed. Their edamame is salted just enough, the miso has a good balance of ingredients, and the sushi looks like little jewels on a plate. The new menu is also a bonus, since pictures defintely help when choosing from foods that I'm not familiar with. I've become a loyal fan of Fuji, and will continue to go back at every opportunity. read more

Crazy amazing sushi at dirt cheap prices! Seriously, this place is a great sushi joint. All the rolls I've tried have been great and are beautifully prepared. Get the miso soup and edamame too! The servers are incredibly nice and attentive. We've been in a few times to celebrate birthdays/promotions and while I'm pretty sure we didn't mention it within earshot, they brought out a cute pineapple dragon thing. The sushi here is amazing. My favorite is the firefly or the spicy girl roll. The music sets the mood perfectly while I sip my hot tea over the delicious miso. I have never had anything bad here. My friend gets the Black dragon and she loves it and thinks its the best thing on the menu. Desserts= A+ Presentation= A+ Taste=A+ Russell= A+ Russell + me = beautiful babies. The service is superb. The waiter that I usually see here is so attractive, Russell makes miso horny. I wish he was on the menu, cause I'd take that spicy roll home! read more

Fuji is a nice little gem in NWI. I live in Southern California and was visiting my Mom in Valpo for a few weeks...Fuji was a nice change of pace from the usual Indiana fare. The folks working there were very nice and the food was great for what it is. I had an order of yellowtail sushi and a beef teriyaki plate that was worthy of this review. Sure, I can find better back home, but I am not complaining. I saw a lot of wonderfully delicious looking rolls being served up while I dined alone. I would not hesitate to recommend Fuji to anyone. Now, if this were a local San Diego place it would only get 2 stars...but comparing that market to Indiana is really not fair...not fair at all. It is tough to run a Japanese restaurant anywhere, and Fuji is an oasis in an otherwise drab culinary landscape. It is a little pricey but that is to be expected to get these ingredients to Portage. Terrible service. While my friends and I figured out the payment options at the register, the host apparently thought we were taking too long and started slamming menus and telling us it was time to go. I was in total disbelief. Then 2 of my amigos went to use the bathroom and she once again became very agitated and threatened to call the police. My brother who lives in Merrillville recommended this place to me a few months ago, and after having drove past it for 20 years thinking it was a camera store, i stopped in today with my girl. Service was quick, very friendly, and attentive. it was after the lunch hour so there were only a few tables seated. The miso was good. The edamame, which i had never had served warm, were very good, and salted just right. The obligatory factory made squid salad which i am a huge fan of was served over a cucumber salad which added a new dimension of crunch to my delight. after long and tireless deliberation over their extensive list of roll options, i opted only for the hollywood roll which included soft shell crab, crab, unagi, with avocado, wrapped in tobiko, with several different spicy sauces drizzled about. excellent choice. my girl had a california roll and some unagi sushi which she enjoyed. we ordered chicken tempura for the little one along with some rangoon type app of some sort and both were very good. overall service was fast, it was a younger crowd both waiting and making sushi today. we spent about 54 bucks before tips, but the one roll was 16. very good choice for such an unassuming, unpretentious place. read more

Work order via doordash. 30% of order showed up. DoorDash driver said it wasn't his fault and could do nothing. Called the restaurant and they said they gave order to driver and he stole it. Bag was not tampered with at all. They were not willing to listen and said they placed all 5 boxes in bag and it only contained 3 boxes. Sent image of bag and order to restaurant via text and they admitted it was missing. Not willing to bring food to complete order was bad service. DoorDash is refunding money for missing food via request from restaurant. read more

The setting isn't fancy- but the sushi is out of this world. I have sent so many people their way (as I am sure have many other regulars) that the place can get pretty busy these days- and they are not set up for a large crowd. I have eaten (carryout) from Fuji many times....and each time their amazing food has been consistently fresh and delicious! I usually get the dragon roll (smoked eel, cucumber, avocado, salmon roe and AMAZING), a couple sides of edamame (freshly brined to order...still warm when you get it home), and recently tried their chicken udon which was outstanding. the broth (err sauce) was so rich and hearty with generous portions of chicken and freshly cooked vegetables, and the noodles are thick and luscious and seemingly homemade. The portion size was also quite large and for 10.00 definitely worth the price. Their miso soup is so mild and refreshing. Their Spider roll is also very good. I have yet to try everything else that looks so enticing on their very large menu...I will be posting a picture of the menu soon since i could not find one anywhere online. They do not yet have a website. Since i have only had takeout thus far, I am not sure about the service in-house. The language barrier is severe though. Over the phone, if you do not know what you want, it's best to come in person to ask any questions. The woman who usually runs the restaurant is sweet but can come across as in a hurry and frustrated because she does not understand much english. But, it is WORTH the effort. Other than Fuji, if you want sushi you have to drive to Merrillville (House of Kobe) or Chicago for pricier spots that may have better service but it's the amazing food that I care about. They have a huge variety of sushi, sashimi, traditional japanese entrees such as mongolian chicken and many varieties of teriyaki, tempura, noodle dishes, and donburi (breaded, fried meat or fish served over rice) Restaurant is clean, simply zen-style design, usually only one waitress working (main business is carryout) and dining room is BYOB. Non smoking as well. Overall I will be eating at this place for years to come. As long as they are still in business I will be supporting them however i can to get the word out! Then the california roll came out and another one, I can't remember the name now. But whatever it was it seemed a little off. Like it wasn't fresh or something. It's difficult finding good sushi in NWI or should I say almost impossible. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the simplicity in Japanese culture; rebuking the motto of "less is more." I've been here on at least 3 occasions and was never particularly impressed, however, it beat out local grocery store refrigerator sushi. So...when in portage...visit Fuji. It is mentionable that they serve delicious shrimp tempura. I've tried their dragon roll - delish, could be sooooo much fresher. Teriyaki Box - not worth the price by a long shot. When I think of good sushi places, a hole in the wall in a Portage strip mall does not come to mind. Or at least it didn't before I came to Fuji with a few friends. It was surprisingly good and I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner. Don't be thrown off by the location or the outside appearance. Inside Fuji is clean, neat and bright. The staff was very polite and friendly towards our group and that always a big plus with me. Their selection of rolls is amazing. The sushi was fresh and not cheap tasting like it can be at some NWI places. I would choose Fuji over Little Tokyo in Valpo every single time. Really bummed out that I didn't try it sooner, but I know now that I'll be going many many times in the future. read more

I moved to Northwest Indiana 2 years ago and have made it my mission to find good sushi. Before tonight, the only sushi I could even find was at Strack and Van Til. This place looked a little sketchy when we pulled in, but it did not disappoint. Not only is this by far the best sushi in Northwest Indiana, it's among the best sushi I've had around the United States. The fish was incredibly fresh. The selection was amazing. Initially we thought the prices were fairly high for the specialty roles, but once we realized the specialty rolls are gigantic (12 pieces), the prices seemed more reasonable. The customer service was out of this world. Our waitress was incredibly attenative and helpful. We order 4 rolls and had all 4 rolls within 15 minutes of ordering. When were leaving the owners/managers came out of the back to make sure our meal was good. If you are like me and desperately seeking sushi in Northwest Indiana, consider checking out Fuji. Don't be turned off by the strip mall when you arrive. This place needs and deserves more business. I may be back before the week is over. read more

Sushi is pretty good, but the beef teriyaki was quite tough, and of the 4 pieces of sashimi I ate, 1 tasted unfresh. The servers were nice though they got me the wrong box initially. There's no other option nearby but compared to Chicago it's meh and the prices are up there with chicago's sadly. read more

Like seriously, there's a Sushi place in Indiana? I had yelped local restaurants last time we visited Indy to see the Dunes , and I was very surprised to see a sushi place come up. Once I read the good reviews I was IN. Once we walked in we were seated right away, and noticed that the place looks still up and coming and newish. Which is okay, but you could tell the server was still finding her footing. But she remained very pleasant and effecient throughout , so it wasn't an issue. Our food arrived a lot faster than I expected and was delicious. I have a sushi spot in Elk Grove (suburb of Chicago) that I'm partial to, but I'll give credit where credit is due. The rolls were so good we ordered a second round. DELISH. Thinking about it now is making me hungry. If you're looking for some healthy food or if you're a vegetarian like me and find looking for good veg food a challenge, then go here. Plus the prices are fair! read more

My boyfriend and I went to Fuji for dinner one night and were pleased with our meal. We ordered the sashimi platter, which was fresh and contained very large pieces of fish. We ordered a couple of rolls, whose names I can't remember, and they were good. The rolls were huge! I am usually stuffing an endless amount of sushi into my nigiri hole, but I was full after splitting two rolls and a sashimi platter. I was slightly disappointed with the service. The server was nice, but he didn't really explain anything to us. Usually a server will explain which roll is which and will point out the different types of fish on a sashimi/nigiri platter; however, our server just plopped things down on our table and we kind of guessed what everything was. A gem in the city of Portage, Indiana, you'd be silly not to try it. I've had some good sushi, and this ranks with the best of them on the staples. I love, love smoked salmon pieces, and they have big fat smoky pieces for a crazyfair price. The soup is good and the ownership/staff is straightup Japanese. The negs - decor is kinda weak. Rectangle table area in the middle of a stripmall. Also, not noted for any discernible drink selection, beyond Saporro. ^ digest all of that, then... Try this place. Tasty, overall. (They are closed Mondays) I live in Valpo and my friends and I agree that the best two things in portage are Fuji and the movie theater. So my favorite things to do are get Fuji and see a movie. I am a spicy girl roll lover and always have been. Can't bring myself to try much more. I also LOVE their miso. Sometimes I even get two bowls.... Every time I go in, the waitresses always greet me with a smile and ask how I've been. Shout out to Vivian who is the best!
