We had an art show to attend in Sidney and stopped here for dinner afterwards. It's a beautiful restaurant in downtown Sidney. I started with a cup of clam chowder. Salty and creamy, it was very good. Next I had the Ahi Tuna dinner. The tuna was a bit overcooked but still delicious (and also salty). But the veggies were way overcooked, mushy and served cold. Yuk. The rice was also way overcooked and a mush pile, yuk as well. My SO had the Ahi tuna appetizer as her meal and the Greek salad. The tuna was coated both sides with a thick layer of wasabi and completely overpowered. She tried to scrape it off. The salad was ok but lacking any feta (again, a Greek salad). Service was painfully slow even though it was not busy. (3/4 of the tables were open.) Given that, the bill was over $100, I would certainly expect more for that price. For dinner we both ordered the special, a 10 oz New York Strip. We split a wedge salad. The bread and garlic butter were wonderful! I could have feasted just on that! Our server, Madison was very helpful and thoughtful. We were really glad that we could pay our check right from the table using the QR code. We would definitely go back!

I have always considered Applebee's to be a relatively dependable travel choice but this location proved that theory wrong!! We visit mid-afternoon on a Saturday so the place was relatively empty (past lunch rush and too early for dinner) so one would expect the service to be at leading acceptable. While we were quickly seated and addressed by a waitress I have to say it was quite possibly the worst waitress we have experienced! She clearly didn't want to be there and was so blunt, "short" , and unfriendly that we were actually uncomfortable asking her for anything! She never offered a refill on drinks or even a dessert option. The food was mediocre (that is being very generous). The salad was bitter and the salmon was the thinnest I have seen served. I might add that we tipped as if the service was fine but, because of the service we will never visit this location again. Because of the quality of food it is unlikely we will choose an Applebee's as this is likely representative of corporate decisions.

That usually means choosing a fast food chain location. These chains serve their purpose but aren't much fun. This place popped up on Yelp and turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. The location is a short drive off the highway into downtown Sidney, taking about 4 or 5 minutes to get there from Exit 92. It was located in a retro building on the main intersection in town cross corner from the County Courthouse. Approaching from the West on Court St., it looked a little divey. It looks more pleasantly vintage from the Ohio St. side, which is actually its storefront. Our visit to this place prompted me to do some quick research. The Spot has been in business for over 100 years, opening in 1907. A fire destroyed the original building in 1940 and according to the local paper, "the current Art Moderne-style building was completed in 1941 and still features its original white porcelain tile, mid-century neon sign and iconic diner layout." It truly has a retro feel inside, going more or less for a 1950s aura where you would not be surprised to see Richie Cunningham sitting at a booth drinking a malt. Although the jukebox is digital, the upgrades enacted by the new owners who took over last year generally seem to be spot on. While it looks retro, the infrastructure is in nice shape with a clean, tidy appearance. It's a pleasant place for a meal. The format is walk-up-and-order. The girl working the counter was polite and efficient. To be fair in context, however, we walked in around 6:45 PM on a Wednesday night an hour-and-a-quarter before closing. It was not at all busy when we entered with one party there finishing their meal and only two others who walked in before we left. Hence, efficiency would be expected with no other customers to be served, but I'll still note the good work. The food was up quickly without any issues. We sat in 1950s comfort to enjoy our meal. I had the Turkey Club. It was quite good. I ordered mine with Onion Rings as my wife wanted to split these with me. She had the Swiss Lad sandwich, which she said was also very tasty. We split an Iced Tea which was likewise quite good. With everything, we spent $25.48 for dinner. At less than $13 per person, I was happy with that value. We'll certainly look for this place again when we are passing through Sidney.

Bush visit 28-Aug-04 and another picture highlighting this establishment was previously owned by Rob Lowe's (Brat Pack actor from the 1980's) grandfather. The menu included several diner classics so I selected the "Big Buy" which was a double decker hamburger which was cooked to my liking. The wait was very reasonable and I enjoyed seeing families enjoying their dining experience together on a Tuesday evening. It was also enjoyable listening to some familiar music from my youth while waiting and then consuming my meal. I also selected onion rings which were thinly sliced and had a flaky texture, but these can cool quickly it seemed, but were tasty. I tried the chocolate and vanilla mixed/twist malt and a piece of raspberry pie. The malt was delicious, but the pie was a little dry although I finished it quickly. I also appreciated seeing the work ethic of Isabell meticulously maintaining the dining room tables carefully. I asked some folks in town about the new ownership and a few indicated "hit or miss", but for me on this evening it was a hit. Hopefully the new ownership adapts and adjusts by being a good listener to a customer base that provides feedback so it can be a thriving business for years to come in this unique location. To top it off, I had ordered food delivery and after 2 -1/2 hour wait it never came and I had no dinner. One of the hosts, Jerome found me and I explained and he insisted on making sure I was fed and heated me up a steak and fried potatoes. I was so grateful and it was delicious and way better than the delivery that never came. In the morning I was fed the fluffiest Griddle pancake that was soft on the inside and crispy on the outside served with honey vanilla butter sauce and maple syrup. I also had cheesy eggs toast and sausage. It was all fantastic! I had to take half home it was so filling. I recommend this place to anyone who wants a relaxing night away.
