Not a bad spot at all. They had some pretty good lunch deals here. We were in town and I actually found this spot because of Yelp. There were plenty of parking so you don't have to worry about not being able to find a parking spot. I tried their tempura shrimp roll and also their chicken teriyaki bento box. The bento box came with miso soup, salad, an egg roll, and the California roll. I honestly really enjoyed the bento box. I thought it was a really good lunch deal. The chicken teriyaki sauce was also pretty yummy. I also liked their eggroll alot. In all, I didn't have a bad experience and would consider coming back here if I'm ever in town again. read more

Our women's group met here for lunch - in fact we meet here every other month. I always pick one of the lunch Bento Boxes. This time I chose the Vegetable Tempura. Included in this box (and it comes to the table in a box!) were pieces of lightly fried and breaded sweet potato and zucchini, salad, egg roll, California roll, rice and soup. I opted for the Hibachi soup instead of the Miso. The tempura was greaseless and the veggies were tender. The salad is lettuce with a light dressing. Everything was excellent except for the Hibachi soup. I order it ever time and it's so salty. I'll try the Miso next time. The service is excellent with friendly staff. Also, the restaurant is clean. In my opinion, this is the best sushi in the Evansville area. The sushi and sashimi were very fresh. There were six of us so we ordered a variety of rolls and the sashimi deluxe so we could try different items. We each started with the Treasure Salad which I highly recommend. The staff was working hard to take care of both dine-customers in and take out orders. The menu has unique special rolls which are very good. Also recommend the Bob Roll. Our server was very attentive and took great care of us. All staff members were working hard and I could tell that all customers were treated well. We had a great time eating here! We tried this place for the first time tonight. It seems like it's a little past its heyday but still trying to hold on. It was a Sunday, and very cold out so I suspect they weren't expecting a big crowd, but it was exceptionally cold in the restaurant. The limited staff seemed a bit stretched thin even though there were only a couple tables. They had some pretty etched glass dividing half walls with Asian motifs which were pretty. The prices were reasonable but the quality was so-so. I was impressed with the portion of salmon for the teriyaki salmon entree. The miso tasted a bit odd- different than anywhere else I've had it. The tempura udon broth was also not the best. I've had some tempura udon where I'm obsessed with the broth, but this wasn't very unmemorable. It's definitely a small family run spot and I hope they can be successful. I would come back if someone wanted to go but it won't probably be the top of my list. I live in Indianapolis and visit family in Evansville hence the occasion to come here. read more

My scallop bento box had 3 scallops, the sushi was warm and had a spoiled taste & Combination rice was like eating cardboard. The server was not pleasant & clearly annoyed with taking care of a to go order while she had tables to take care of. Good food, big portions. The fried squid appetizer was super good because it was tender and crispy & not overly fried & oily. My only gripe was I got the teriyaki shrimp dinner bento & I guess I missed the part where rice wasn't included. It was extra for a bowl of rice. What kind of Asian restaurant doesn't include rice with an entree??? Asian people need rice with an entree! The sushi was delicious. The lobster roll was good. I've ordered from Fuji Yama twice. Both times have been during the covid shut down so I can't comment on the table service or anything like that, although the same woman was at the counter both times and she was very friendly. The food was ready at the specified time both times as well. The first time I ordered the teriyaki chicken dinner and it was good. Food was tasty and still hot when I got it home, which tells me it hadn't been sitting out for too long like at some places that tell you a time then finish it much sooner. Last night I ordered a rainbow roll. The first piece I bit into (one with white fish) had a bone in it. I was disappointed but spit the bone out and kept eating. The tuna tasted funny, and tuna is usually one of my favorites. As I was about to eat a piece with salmon the salmon fell off the top of the roll when I saw that the underside of the fish was grey and filmy. I turned on a brighter light to get a better look and sure enough, even the top of all pieces of salmon was too pale to be good. At that point I decided the sushi was not safe to eat and threw the rest away. I would go back here for cooked food if it was my only option, but with so many other options in town I'd rather avoid a place that gave me unsafe food altogether. read more

This is my 3rd year going to Evansville for an annual training. I discovered an amazing Japanese restaurant last year. Decided to try somewhere different this time to familiarize myself with the variety this little town offers. Prior to arriving I saw this place offered one of my favorite dishes (Katsudon), a pork cutlet with donburi base over rice and and slightly scrambled egg poured on top. Onions don't like me but this item would be in serious trouble if it were missing so that's good. They were a bit too generous with their toasted sesame, which is not usually a topping on Katsudon so the taste of the sesame kind of overpowered the udon taste a few times. The portion size was actually perfect for my appetite so I left just full enough to feel satisfied but not like I needed to be rolled out to the car. It was not very crowded when I first arrived at 1230pm but tables were filling up as I was leaving. The plus on this is that it is opened past traditional Japanese restaurant hours which gave me the opportunity to take my time through my meal. I was greeted with a smile at the hostess stand and from what it seemed a family operation. Alas, no military discount but that's ok. My total bill was reasonable for my order. Would I go back?... likely only if their competition was gone and this was my alternative for katsudon. The establishment is pleasant. Just remember, I have extremely high expectations so that means it's not bad. This likely suits the locals tastes but not this discerning Asian ;) read more

I'll be honest.. When I first moved to Evansville in 2016, this was my least favorite sushi place. It wasn't until 2018 that I decided to give them another try with my (now) husband. Needless to say, the quality of the fish is 10x better and I actually prefer their fish over every other place here in Evansville! If you didn't like their food prior to 2018, I highly recommend giving them another chance! read more

I went here for lunch and tried the bento special. The waitress was very kind and attentive. The sushi tasted very fresh and the cooked food had a great flavor. I was blown away by the rainbow dragon roll! It was very cold in the restaurant and towards the end of our meal I felt very rushed by another waitress who came in and kept asking if everything was okay and if we wanted our bill even though we were still eating but also having conversation. I understand that they close at 2 during the day but it was only about 1:30. I've worked in food before and waited on people who walked in five minutes to close. I am relatively new to Evansville and was looking for sushi. This place is close to where I live so I stopped in. I was disappointed. As soon as I walked in I was told that I had to call in an order. She did not even let me sit and order. Therefore, I believed that perhaps they were not offering dine-in service. She would not let me place an order at the counter either. I was confused but stepped outside and called in my order. I waited 15 minutes as she requested. When I went back I saw people being seated for dine-in. I really was annoyed because I asked about dine-in but was refused the dine-in. Now about the sushi. I wish I had seen that they put that nasty mayo on the sushi. I like spicy but the spicy mayo is actually gross, not really spicy, and adds nothing.By the way, they could actually put it on the side in case some people just don't like mayo. I am not a fan of many things that contain any type of mayo. However, when it comes to sushi I am not a fan of mayo on it at all. I like wasabi paste for my sushi. If I wanted that mayo, I would have grabbed sushi at the supermarket. Then there is the fact that I went to a Japanese restuarant expecting my sushi to be rolled with the nori on the outside, as that is the traditional way to roll sushi. The rice was on the outside. Now, this may not seem like a big deal, but again, if that is what I wanted I could have grabbed that at a supermarket. I cannot say much about the ambiance because I was not allowed to eat inside. From what I saw it just looked like a typical casual Japanese restaurant. It was quiet. When I walked in the first time there were no eat-in customers. When I returned to pick up my order, there was one table of four eating quietly. There was a couple about to walk-in but I don't know if they were there to eat or to just to pick up. Pros: Sushi is good. Always fresh, moderately priced, decent serving sizes, convenient if you're on Northside of town, never crowded. Cons: Takes FOREVER for orders to come out. Given that I've never seen more than 2 or 3 tables at a time in the restaurant, you'd think service would right on top of things. I was visiting Evansville from out of town this weekend and went to Fuji Yama on Friday around 1pm for lunch based on good Yelp reviews. Unfortunately, my group was given the worst service any of us had ever experienced in a restaurant. We were pointed to a table upon arrival and couldn't even make eye contact with the server for 15 minutes. Once she finally came to the table, we placed food and drink orders together since we had been sitting staring at the menu for so long. Despite catching our server's attention twice and being told that our drinks were "on the way," we waited 45 minutes for waters. By the time our food finally arrived we were already late to the event we were attending, so we ate what we could in 5 minutes. Our soups and side salads came at the same time as the main meals. We weren't given any dishes for soy sauce, or chopsticks. Sides of rice we ordered never even arrived. We wrapped up the sushi we couldn't gobble down quickly in napkins to go, since we couldn't imagine how long we might have to wait if we asked for a to-go box. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy, with only 4 or 5 tables seated, but it appeared that they only had three employees in the building including the sushi chef! We watched several people walk in and wait to be seated for more than 10 minutes. Some left before they were ever greeted. I don't know if the food was good because I had to gulp it down so fast and left half my meal behind. The portions were definitely huge for the price. We had planned on getting separate checks (told the server beforehand to make it easier) but were so late that we had someone put it all on the same card to save time. The employee who checked us out was angry at the slow server and seemed to be aware of the problem, but didn't even offer an apology. read more

While I would argue that this restaurant is not authentically Japanese, I had a great time here last semester with my college club mates. We ended up seating about 20 people at two hibachi grill stations, and since hibachi is not an authentically Japanese way of cooking, I had a lot of fun witnessing it for the first time. Both the hibachi chef and the waitresses were extremely attentive, and I was very impressed with the quality of the food and overall service. Would recommend this place to others who are looking for a good meal, or would like to have a large party meal with their friends. read more

If you are looking for something you would find in a 'Beni Hana'--lower your expectations. If you are looking for a quaint place to eat some legit, really good Japanese food, Fujiyama might be a good place to hit up. If you're in a hurry, don't come here. I ordered a hot sake', and was told that there was no sake'. Really?!?! In a Japanese hibachi/sushi joint? Come on, man. The owner, who was also the hibachi chef, ran to the store and got some, because, at this point, we had already been there for a good 25-30 mins. When he got back with my sake', about 15 mins later, we started seeing the initial offering a of most area hibachi grills, i,e. Miso soup, and salad. (Dressing is similar to Zuki's...but definitely the poor man's). Food was good. No doubt about it, and price wise, considerably less than some of the more well renowned places in Evansville. However, if you plan on eating here... Don't be in a rush to do anything else. read more

I have eaten here a few times and the quality has gone seriously downhill. As most of you know, the whole appeal to eating out at a hibachi grill is to have your food cooked in front of you. When we arrived there was already a family sitting at the table across from us, no big deal, you usually sit with strangers at a place like this. However there are 2 grills and since they got there first, the chef cooked their and our food facing the other party and we got to watch his back the entire time. My 2.5 year old was very upset by this. Hibachi is usually a great was to guarantee that my toddler sits in her chair for most of the meal, because she is being entertained the whole time by onion volcanoes and flying knifes and spatulas, but she was bored, and so was I. To add insult to injury the family who got to watch the food being cooked didn't seem to be enjoying themselves one bit. When we used to go there we would always have an abundance of leftovers, enough for a big lunch the next day, but the portions have gotten so small that even my tiny 100 lb mother-in-law ate every morsel on her plate. They didn't even have bean sprouts. What kind of Japanese restaurant doesn't have bean sprouts on a Monday? My husband ordered a sashimi plate and they never brought his rice, and I'm sorry, cooked crap and shrimp do no belong on a sashimi plate. Not to mention his salmon was smoked Nova Lox. This is sushi people, not bagels! Our sodas were very watered down also, when we told the waitress she just asked if we wanted refills instead of, i don't know, fixing the problem. If you want Hibachi, i suggest you try one of the other places in town. read more

I love Fujiyama. Yes it's a bit pricey (you expect that with Hibachi grills), but it's cheaper than some of the other Hibachi places in Evansville. I also like that there's not a huge wait.
