This restaurant was an absolute delight. Since the owners are Korean, we ordered bulgogi, which came out well seasoned on a sizzling pan. Delicious. Meanwhile, the two specialty rolls we ordered were among the best we've had since moving to the Midwest. They were also surprisingly affordable, at $11 or $12 each. You'd pay at least a couple bucks more at most places. To top it off, the owners were sooo kind to our children. They positively doted on them, even bringing out some complimentary butter cake and yogurt snacks. All in all, Mikato will certainly be a stop on our next trip to Owensboro! read more

My wife has Gluten and Dairy Allergies. They are able to adjust where possible to make the dishes ordered without Gluten and/or Dairy. The best part was the honesty. They didn't have some sushi due to seasonal or market price and would have gone to waste if not sold before the expiration date. Whereas some other sushi restaurants would still serve bad sushi to make the sale. This was our first time and now this would be a staple dinning whenever we are in town visiting family. The owners, husband-Kevin and wife-Jenny, and their daughter-Halim who happened to be visiting, are the most wonderful, friendly, welcoming, honest and such beautiful people I've ever meet dinning. If only more restaurants would take some time and get to know their customers. They made us feel like we were family visiting and having a meal at their home. They serve, Korean and Japanese dishes, plus Hibachi Grill. Amazing food and people's. Stopped in here quickly for lunch with some friends and man were we surprised. It was a little dark looking and we were afraid it was closed, but we were warmly greeted when we got in and seated immediately. We got a combo of fried rice, sashimi appetizer, and bulgogi. We tried to dine here for an early lunch 11:30 on a Saturday, only to see they didn't open until noon for lunch. Came in the following Saturday, and noted only 1 person dining there. Greeted warmly by the sweetest lady, who was also our server. They offer sushi and hibachi dishes, but we were interested in the Korean offerings. We ordered the Bibimbap, as well as the Spicy Pork Soup. (Sundubu Jigae) Surprisingly, they did not bring banchan. We asked for some Kimchee, and our server told us they don't bring it anymore because " people thought it was stinky". She did give us a small potion. It was delicious. The Bibimbap was fantastic, we both agreed. The spicy pork soup was not what I expected. The base appeared to be the miso soup that they serve with a hibachi meal, not a rich red broth. I love spicy food, but they used sliced jalapeños and whole dried Thai chilies to make the soup spicy. It was just not too appetizing. On the plus side, the decor is beautiful, clean and romantic. Another star down because it took nearly 30 minutes to get our lunch. I would like to give them another try in the future, and perhaps upgrade my rating. ( fingers crossed) read more

The food was amazing, but the service was even better. The server and her husband were so friendly and took so much time, effort, and care into our service. We ordered tempura ice cream, and they had ran out of a few items to make it. This was unbeknownst to us, and instead of telling us they didn't have the ice cream, the husband went to Walmart to get the necessary items to make it. Literally the best service we've had, they were all so friendly, and as my bf said, "They have no business being that nice." This place was simply amazing. My wife and I came her on a friends recommendation and we were not disappointed. The staff was friendly but our waitress was so sweet, warm and welcoming. She was a little older woman, I believe she may even be an owner? Either way service was amazing. We got there right as the place opened and we were literally the first customers that day. It was very clean and nicely lit. The atmosphere was exactly what you expected. So my wife and I ordered egg rolls but there was some issue to where we couldn't get them. On the waitress recommendation we got some type of substitute dumpling filled with veggies and pork. These were soooo good. I'm actually glad they did not have the egg rolls. Then we ordered sushi. My wife got a shrimp tempura roll and I got a Texas ranger roll which was tempura shrimp and crab with sirloin on top. This had to of been the best sushi I ever had. For our entrees my wife got some type of spicy chicken hibachi and I got the steak and chicken mix. Now, when I say spicy, her food was SPICY but so flavorful and delicious. My food came out next and the seasoning on the steak was out of this world. We will return and we have been telling all of our friends. People need to support businesses like this more often. Everything is so superior than what you get at a chain restaurant. We were visiting from California and we were so impressed with this place. Sushi was fresh, food was authentic and delicious and the most important part, the service is amazing. We had the bi bim bap and it was as good as any place in San Francisco. Had a couple of sushi rolls and the salmon looked very fresh. I think the lady in front was the owner, and she's the sweetest most attentive person. You can tell they really care and they treat customers like family. After many years visiting family in Owensboro, finally a restaurant I can look forward to going. Wow! We travel and stay in the Owensboro area down on the waterfront annually for our family trip to Holiday World. The town has great things to offer in a stark contrast to the tourist world of Santa Claus, IN. In all the years we have made this trip, we had not ventured out of the waterfront and had no idea this place was here. We left the dinner choice to our 13yo and we couldn't have been more pleased with the result. Fully prepared to be eating sushi, we settled in and opened the menu. How incredible to find that the family was Korean. We quickly changed direction and ordered from that section of the menu. The incredible love and attention those dishes were beyond any we have had back home, and we have a healthy Korean population where we live. Even better than the food was finding that the matriarch was the heart behind those dishes. Hearing her pride in her food made it a truly special meal. Pulled up unaware that this was a new place! Decided to try it out and was happy I did. My mom and I were looking for some hibachi, she got steak and I got chicken. Both of us thought it was really good, better than some competitors. The rice was delicious and the chicken was cut in nice chunks with a teriyaki sauce. My mom said her steak was the best she's ever had! The ambience was calm, unlike some places like this that can get really crowded and loud. Maybe because it's new maybe because they don't care I am not sure. Everyone there seemed to be lost in a fog no one seemed to know who ordered what. After waiting a long time to get our sushi it was half decent. When I got my chicken and rice it was less than appealing to the eye, and the chicken tasted like the grill that it was cooked on hadn't been cleaned in quite some time. The shrimp and rice was more visually appealing but tasted awful. I really don't see us going back especially with all the competition here in Owensboro. We will stick with Wasabi West! read more
