Service always begins at the door with "welcome" in Japanese. Smiling faces and cheerful employees moving to assist their Guests. I elected to sit at the Sushi bar as I was alone. I saw the delicious fresh presentation of the lunch special at the entryway and knew it was for me. So I ordered one for now and take out for my wife for later. My order came to me within 10 minutes. Before I began I took in visually how fresh and colorful it all looked, and appreciated the eye appeal. I was ready for it all. I had the Teriyaki chicken, and tempura mix. It came with Japanese salad, and white miso soup. Also it came with pickled vegetables, a large scoop of rice, and dipping sauces. The food was good and it's what I expected, but I really had a nice surprise with their tempura. It was light crispy and not overladen with residual oil. The flavor of the prawns came through the flavor of the other vegetables came through, but my surprise was the perfect cooking of the broccoli tips in tempura batter.. I know from home cooking broccoli can be tricky because it does have a specific smell to it and sometimes it can be better but this was perfect and the texture was so delicious. I really enjoyed it. I look around the place just before I left one last time for the day and it has a nice appearance of comfortable energy to the room. It's not too dark not too bright it's definitely comfortable and everyone is well taken care of everywhere I looked. It looked very clean And slightly handicapped I was very happy that everything was accessible to me. I will come back again. I've been dining here for decades. Always good sushi and good service. Today I provided my phone number on the merchant's slip AND added a 20% tip for lunch. When I got back to my computer, I discovered my tip had been rung up as a separate sale and either my server, "Abraham C." or the cashier changed my 20% tip to 26%. WATCH OUR FOR ROBATA'S TIP INFLATION. For myself I will never return there. Suggest you write in language, like a check, the amount you are tipping or go to one of the many other sushi bars in the area. read more

We got the 49 er roll and it was pretty good. The crunchy saigon roll was okay but I really liked the 49 er. We got the dinner set and the ebi sunomono was really good! Salmon teriyaki was great. Roasted broccoli was good! Loved it. Extra side of siracha was 1.50 which has never happened to me before but just a heads up for you. We ordered beef but switched to salmon after the waiter said no beef was available and there's a $2-$3 difference so we asked the waiter and he changed it back so just pay attention to your bill. We love this restaurant and come here almost every week. The lunch specials are very reasonably priced and always delicious. They are extremely accommodating of any allergies or dietary restrictions. This would be enough for us to return weekly however what really makes this restaurant special is the outstanding service from Maia, who is more than incredible! read more

I highly recommend Robata Grill and Sushi. My husband and I went here on a date night and had an excellent time. The food was great, we started with the Spider Roll, I had the Black Cod and my husband had the Butter Lamb (Batayaki Lamb) and we finished off with the Macha Tiramisu. Actually awful! $43 for a chirashi that has 4 pieces of raw fish total (also has 2 pieces tamago, fish eggs, mushrooms and ginger). Very little rice. All of it tasted worse than supermarket quality. It's more expensive, worse quality, and you get less compared to other sushi restaurants. There is actually no reason to go here. I would give 0/5 stars if able. read more

As soon as I walked through the door I knew my dinning experience would be great. The atmosphere and ambience was very calm, and felt very authentic and Japanese. In addition, the customer service was spectacular. The staff were super friendly and very respectful. The best part, however, definitely had to be the food. The chicken kaarage was cooked super well and had this really nice crispness to it. I really enjoyed the sushi. I would highly recommend the 49er roll, the spicy tuna roll, and the spicy scallop roll. The flavors were great! Definitely order the seaweed salad, as an appetizer. It wasn't overly fishy tasting like it can be at other places and it has a bit of spice to it which helps complement the flavor. read more

Found this place through friends years ago and it was good to go back. The staff are friendly and the food is good at reasonable prices. I highly recommend the grilled yellow tail collar. It's hamachi Yaka. This was so good with buttery meat just delicious. We are still talking about it days later. The tempura was standard. I like the variety of vegetables like broccoli, bell peppers, green beans and squashes. Good shrimp too. The hella roll was very good with asparagus. Overall it's a good Japanese place with sushi. In recent years the ownership has changed but the people working there are the same. read more

When the restaurant opened at 5:30, with a few guest waiting, the hostess greeted us and took us to a dark corner table that was somewhat hidden from the main dinning area, then she left us quickly and so we asked one of the servers if we could move to a table with more light and better visibility. We move to the better location. I ordered the Hamachi sashimi and my friend ordered the salmon sashimi. My serving was much more plentiful than my friend, however the price was the same, this was a disappointment. The Hamachi sashimi was just ok. We also ordered the Robata roll, also 19.95, that was the only item that was worth the cost. I would skip the sashimi if I ever returned to this place. We had the desert Mochi, seems like they just popped it out of a frozen food container and charged an expensive price. The music and lighting were not good. Terrible pop music from a bygone era, like old 80 music. Overall I did not like the experience, except the waiter was good. read more

Sushi is always fresh. Love the dengaku and the veggie cooked sushi. Service was fabulous and comfortable seating.

Roboto is good. It's much nicer inside than you would expect. Their fish is fresh and it's overall a pretty good deal. I haven't gotten food from here in a while but we were present pleasantly surprised this evening. It was all tasty. We need to go back more often. read more

I loved it here, the food, which I only got the tofu bento box due to me being pescatarian, was truly delicious. The ambiance was awesome too, it was quiet and I recommend the booths. I am only in California for about a week for vacation, but it is a must-stop and is one of my favorite Japanese food places. The food and service is always good here. Even though they are under new management, they have kept the nice details and quality of food! Happy hour at the bar is also a nice option (4-6 I think?) and there is a table that has a fire in the bar so we will definitely try to reserve that next time we go! There is also outdoor seating on the patio and dogs are allowed. I have taken my dog out there with my family on 2 occasions and it worked out great. Our waiter, Gregory, had a cold, poker face, making us feel like we arrived at the worst possible time. He didn't check if everything was alright with our meal. My estimation of Robata has continued to degrade each time we come. The quality of the fish here has degraded, although to be honest it wasn't that great to start with. Today's special of mediocre spicy hamachi roll (mostly chopped and mushy hamachi trim) and a mediocre rendition of tempura (heavy and oily not light and crisp) are on offer. The sashmi and nigiri at lunch is often served frozen and still defrosting. Not only was the meal subpar, but the service recently has been downright snarly. When I misunderstood what is a confusing lunch menu (you apparently must order two or more separately listed and separately priced items to make up a lunch and therefore "qualify" for the soup and rice) I was told, "if you are going to order it that way, you are not going to get the rice and soup" instead of explaining courteously how lunch here is ordered. My fellow diner got a similar curt "you can't order like that! " When I asked if I asked if our $22 lunch per person included green tea, I was told, "no, we charge for that separately now." Most sushi places offer value, freshness or service as a selling point. I'm sorry, but to have high cost and low quality lunch offerings alongside suboptimal service is not a recipe for success. read more

Not for Nigiri, there go I... In terms of fresh, great quality fish, they are clearly in no conscious competition for, as if, Sushi Ran or Samurai Sushi. Went for lunch to fix a nigiri Jones and didn't want to travel or spend too much. I got what I needed, baseline. Chef's selection nigiri was tired and dry, but wasabi, soyu, and gari (pickled ginger) can hide the flaws (but shouldn't have to). I think if they put effort and invested in daily fresh nigiri specials, they may get something going. Robata is a solid family style Japanese teriyaki grill. The sake menu is diverse and satisfying. Prices at lunch were delightfully untypical of Mill Valley privilege entitled "I can, so I'll pay it.l. Whatever." I'm going back for the grill and a little Benihana old school vibe. read more

Despite having lived in Marin for years and passed by this restaurant many times, I had never had a meal here. We had one of those rare very hot days and we picked this restaurant because we knew it would have air-conditioning. Apparently we weren't the only ones who had this thought. Robata gets kudos for good service on the evening we went despite being packed with people looking for a cool place to get out of the heat. I had the hamachi kama with a side of wakame seaweed and my husband had the tonkatsu. I liked the wakame, but the hamachi kama was very overcooked and dry compared to a version of this I had in a San Francisco restaurant. I was disappointed. I was also taken aback when I ordered a pinot grigio and was served pinot noir. The waitress was clearly not a wine drinker, but was very gracious about correcting the error. My husband thought the tonkatsu was okay, but not better than average. It's quite possible the restaurant was overwhelmed by the number of people there that night, so I may give it another try at some point in the future. read more
