And it's also taking a lot of guts for me to write this review... like I must feel some type of way because I really do feel for small businesses and want them to succeed... just not with service like this. Wish I had listened to the other Yelp reviewers instead of giving this place the benefit of the doubt. I brought in my 2 year old shih-tzu, and she was returned to me... looking nothing like a shih-tzu. The lady really sounded like she knew what she was talking about too. Me: "I'd like a puppy cut, longer around the face." Her: "Okay. Around one centimeter on the body? Shorter?" Me: "One centimeter is fine." Her: "And her face, round cut?" Me: "Yes, sounds good." Two hours later... (Please see photo for accurate understanding of my frustration) Is this the same dog? Where is her face? I swear there was some fur underneath her mouth... that's all gone? Hm. I was in SHOCK. Or SHOOK. However you call it. Didn't have the words. She tried to give me a host of excuses... "your dog kept on smiling, so I couldn't get an even cut." "She had a lot of knots on her back and her stomach, so I just cut it off. If it looks uneven, that might be why." Look, no amount of excuses can forgive the fact that you just completely shaved my dog, and cut her fur unevenly all around. Went in not too long ago to buy my baby some bday stuff. I was a little sad that Oscar was no longer there. Oscar helped me shop (my last visit) and suggested stuff to me if they didn't have inventory on things that I wanted. Don't get me wrong, the new guy I saw was nice, but every time I asked him something, he gave me the same answer over and over and over and over of "you need to email the owner". Disclaimer: I am a cat person. If I were a dog person I'd probably give this place 5 stars but you shouldn't advertise yourself as a pet supply store when 98% of your stock is for dogs. The paltry two or three shelves that hold the minute selection of cat merchandise isn't worth the space. They cut my dog during grooming and shaved giant chunk of skin off. When I picked him up the guy at the register told me that the groomer had an issue with tangles but that's all. I didn't think anything of it, maybe he had a small bald spot or something. But NOT that they cut him. I saw it later that night--it was hidden behind his ear and it was huge. I got busy with work and didn't get a chance to take photos earlier. But here's what it looks like now--all scabbed over. My dog is extremely calm and docile, so there is no reason why this would have happened other than carelessness. I just moved into the area and this groomer is the closest to my house. Update: 12/07 - upgraded to 5 stars Just took Sophie for a haircut and Lulu for a nail trim. Very happy with the result. Unlike last time, Sophie was happy to see us. You see, we brought her somewhere else the last time and when we picked her up, she was so upset that she refused to even look at my husband. (Treats stepped in and everything was right again.) We're very happy that the person actually listened to us and did what we asked. The price ($48) is also great as I paid $10+ more at the other place. The parking problem has been solved! At least for now. There's a park right on the other side of the 4th Street Bridge with plenty of street parking. It's a short walk to the shop. For those of you coffee fanatics, you can even pick up a cup of coffee from Philz on the way. After all the mixed reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect about this place. It carries a good selection of doggie fashion. However, it's really geared toward the tiny dogs as Sophie (16 lbs) would not fit into many of the items on the shelf. I'm impressed by some of the toys it carries. For someone who has been to most pet stores in the Bay Area, it's not often that I find toys (quite a few of them) that I have not seen elsewhere. Also, the store carries some interesting food bowls and beds. There is a nice selection of accessories, cat products and high quality food like Innova and Merrick. Pet grooming is also available. To shop here, it's good to know your prices. I checked out items that I have gotten at other stores to compare the prices. Prices are not unreasonable for a boutique. I'll give you an example: Pill Pockets - $5.59 @ Citipets, $5.99 @ B&B, $9 @ Furry Tales, and $9.95 @ Barry For Pets. So, it's on the high end of the prices, but not the highest. I also found the prices for some of the items very reasonable, at the low end of the spectrum compare to other boutiques and pet supply stores. One strange pricing I found is with the carob bars it sells. The 1 oz bar is priced at $2.70 while the 1.55 oz bar is priced at $2.95. I got Sophie the bigger bar. read more

I am with Clive L. I used to take my dog to Julia, and she always did an awesome grooming job. She was professional, skillful, and friendly with no BS. My dog may not be the easiest to deal with, but she always managed to give him a great haircut. Now with the new management, I am no longer taking my dog there and here are the reasons: - they called me to book an appt with them and offered 20% off for the service. Though that sort of raised a flag (Julia never had to do it probably bc ppl kept coming back to her.) - it was actually the 2nd time for my dog to have an appointment with them, and yet they needed his name, breed, and other info that they should already have in the system. - the day of: usually my dog's grooming takes 3hrs. It took them 6hrs. I could be ok with that, but when I got there and saw his haircut, I could not believe how horrible his haircut was esp. after 6hrs of work. The groomer didn't even come out and the receptionist, who has no idea about grooming, just told me my dog was "active" and would not comply. They had to give him "timeout" many times and that was the reason why it took so long. I still couldn't understand why his hair was uneven EVERYWHERE. I didn't take him to Petsmart so that a groomer can practice. I thought I took him to a professional. - on top of the poor job, they forgot to give me 20% off that they promised, and called me later to either have me come back to swipe my card again, or give me cash, or offer 20% for the next appointment. I told them they did a horrible job, my dog seemed very stressed, I would not be going back there ever. My Pomeranian chihuahua mix's hair was getting a little long and his normal groomer is out of town for a couple of weeks so I came by here to try them out. The groomer cut my dog's ear, something that has never happened in his 8 years of getting groomed. I've seen him groomed before and he will stay motionless on the table the entire time so how a groomer manages to make a slice in my dog's ear is beyond me. Never again! I took my yorkie in to get groomed and I specifically asked the groomer not to shave her. I even showed her a picture of her last cut that I liked. It was a shorter cut but not buzzed. (Different groomer in OC) She had long hair and when I got her back she shaved. She also had a spot where the clippers ran too deep so a chunk was missing. My dog is VERY easy to handle, there was NO excuse for this. Her face was also trimmed lopsided. In the end she looked ridiculous. The poochie has been getting her hairs did at Furry Tales now for 3 years. Julia has been great at building a bond with Brooklyn and myself. She doesn't even need to ask what kind of cut we need for the pooch...she just does her magic and suffers thru being poked by Brooklyn's needle hairs. One hour later Brooklyn emerges looking super fly and smelling oh so good. For any of you who think this place is expensive since it's "boutique", don't judge. Don't bother if your dog is bigger than a chihuahua. Walked in on this store after a doctor's visit at UCSF. Must have walked into someone's very exciting show time. The lady was busy watching something in her laptop. They have lots of cute outfits for little dogs. Don't bother looking if your dog is anything bigger. And don't bother asking either. She was very professional, kept me up to date and took care of every detail including nasty knots, smelly breath and way too long nails. Our dog needed her nails clipped. So while we were taking her out for a stroll, we decided to swing by this place to get it done. The lady greeted us and asked if our dog has gotten her nails cut before and we answered yes she has. But the thing that shocked the heck out of me was that she only asked for our dog's name and then without even making sure our dog gets used to her, she just scoops her up from behind and takes her to the back, ties her to a rope and starts clipping her nails. At the same time me and my roommate just looked through the glass in awe and disgust as we see our poor dog shaking with fear. It was not a pleasant experience. I won't say I will never be back because this was based purely on a grooming experience. But it definitely has prevented me from coming back in the near future. read more

This is the most upsetting dog grooming experience. I was taking my dog to Pupology and they did a wonderful job but I moved so i needed to find a closer place to bring my dog to for grooming. For starters. My appointment was booked for 9AM. When I arrived the shop was closed. I called and there was no answer. I only waited 3 min, but still not a great first impression. I spent several minutes talking to the lady and explaining how I wanted my dog to be groomed. I specified I didn't want her too short and that I like my cockapoo to keep her fluffy look. I also specified that I like her ears left long. When I picked her up I was stunned to see how short she went! She told me she went with a summer cut. I never asked for a summer cut! Worst of all my baby's beautiful ears were cut so short it makes her look silly! And her tail also shaved down to almost nothing! I've never seen such a poor grooming job. My biggest gripe is that I feel like the lady didn't listen to a thing I said during our consultation. She also put christmas looking bows on her ears. The bows are cute but not for this season. I took them off her as soon as I got home and realized that where she affixed the bows she chopped the rest of the hair so that now it looks like her ears have a weird, choppy, short layer. Her beautiful, long flowing ears look so botched! When I commented on the short length of the ears, she was quick to use the excuse that her ears were so knotted she had to cut them down. I brush out my dog's hair on the regular, but she does have long hair and it does get tangly. Other groomers take the time to brush her out. I guess she didn't want to take the time to do that and figured it would be faster to just cut the tangles rather than brush them out. Also, in the past groomers have always remarked over how sweet, and easy to groom my dog is. When I asked this lady how my dog was, she said, "she was Ok. She likes to sit down a lot!" I should also add that my dog couldn't wait to get out of there! She normally doesn't do that. It made me feel like she may have not had the nicest experience. I will not be going back to this grooming salon. read more

Thanks for the fresh cut! The groomer listened to what I wanted for my dog and she also took initiative to give a little style to my dog. I'm pretty open when it comes to change, it's just hair and it grows pretty quick anyways, so it was funny to see how my little guy ended up. I think next time I'll ask for her to surprise me. Overall, my dog's fur was evenly cut, the process was simple (dropped him off at 3pm and picked him up at 5pm on a Saturday), and they were reasonably priced for this area. It was also super convenient for me since I live down the street. Check them out. read more

You've gotta love the variety of dog clothing and accessories. Although the clothes are too small for my 20lbs puggy. But my puggy gets a great nail clipping and then a treat for being a good doggie. They have a great selection of premium dog food and homemade dog treats. There are lots of pet collars and leashes, dog charms, toys, baggies, bowls, etc. The really bad thing about coming here is parking. If you're in the area, I would suggest walking. We live on Folsom St so my husband dropped me off and drove around until we were done. read more

alright, so i switch dog groomers even more than i switch dentists. but no more! They gave us a weekend appt. (bonus!) and didn't seem scared when I said two BIG and VERY FURRY dogs. Even when we showed up there was no sign of fear. (the dogs are super sweet. but they shed 6 dogs worth of fur in an hour). We started taking bets about whether they'd ever want us back or whether they'd give us a ridiculous surcharge to encourage us to come back, but NO. The prices were really reasonable and the owner was really sweet. Our dogs weren't stressed when we picked them up, either. Extra big bonus is walking distance to home. Alright, so I will say that after we took our dogs here they shed for days. Like they do after we give them baths but we're not professionals. So while they were nice and our dogs were clean I don't think we got much more than a bath -- which we can do ourselves. read more

Came here to buy some goodies for a friend's new dog. Amazing how much there is! Gourmet treats, clothes, toys, bowls... anything and everything you can imagine to spoil your furry friend. I ended up getting little chew toys. One was a little purse by Pawda. HA! I was very tempted to get the little Nike shoes. While I think the shoes themselves are the cutest things in the world, I just couldn't do that to a dog. I just went into Furry Tales (which is about a block from my house!) to see if they had cat stuff; I've always hoped for a pet boutique that carried things for cats, too, and right now my husband and I travel to the Sunset to get Merrick's cat food for our cats. As everyone knows, driving in SF is no picnic, and we try to avoid it at all costs. When I saw that not only does Furry Tales carry an assortment of cute cat accessories (dishes shaped like tiaras, for instance) and treats (Bud and Pussy Pleaser are among the more amusing products!), but they ALSO carry my cat food brand...let's just say that I was very excited. Lots of text messaging ensued. I ended up chatting with Chad for about 20 minutes about everything from the nature of the pet boutique to whether they may carry more varieties of Merrick's in the future to how much that Pomeranian loved being groomed to my mai-tai induced headache and coffee. I didn't get to meet Julia, but the vibe I got while there was really positive, and I called my mom (in Oregon!) the moment I left to tell her how excited I was that I'd discovered Furry Tales right next to my dentist's office. Everyone should come to this place--help Chad and Julia succeed! These guys turn our dog back into a puppy every time we take him in for a grooming. Store has everything conceivable you would need for your best friend - and probably your cat, but am not so well versed in cat because I don't have one. Furry tales is so great! Julia is not only fabulous with my greyhound, she just gave me and the man a lesson on how to cut his nails and groom him at home. I've owned my dog for 8 years and never found someone who was so good with people and with pets. She also does not take too many appointments which really helps. Regarding the store, the product selection is fabulous. Where else can you find a collar with Batman and Superman pins all over it? Really like this place - close to my office, has accommodating staffers, and the owner's dog Mickey is a great host. Julia is very nice and does a great job with my malteses. Thank you for baby-sitting them when I've been a bit late in picking them up after their appointments! I took my Cocker Spaniel, Oscar, to Furry Tales a few weeks ago for grooming. I had only adopted him a few weeks earlier, and the poor guy had dirty and matted hair. Julia (I think) was extremely friendly and accommodating. She discussed Oscar's needs in depth on the phone with me, and emailed me all of the proper forms so that I could fax them in. She treated Oscar very well and did a wonderful job of removing his matted hair and making him look great again. There is also a wonderful selection of treats and dog toys to reward your dog after a long grooming session. Dash is super sensitive about his paws so we decided to try a dremel as an alternative to clipping. Julia was so gentle with him that she was able to use both a clipper and a dremel on him to achieve the best pawdicure hes ever had and he didn't seem to mind it all. I brought my dog Mike here (he is a maltese yorkie mix) and I made it clear that I do not want the standard Yorkie cute. I hate that look on my dog since he looks more like a brown fluffy maltese. Every other groomer I have been to gives him the Yorkie cut, even when I ask them not too. This place actually listened to me. They gave him the cute teddy bear look that I wanted. The lady there also gave great instructions on how to keep his eyes clear of buggers and get him used to having them taken out. Very nice overall. I bought two slightly over priced shirts.. but hey rent for these places is not cheap so I expect to pay more than I would online. I see some negative complaints about food and clothes costs vs buying online. Things are cheaper online because they don't have to rent a nice building in a decent area, decorate in a pleasing way, or pay staff to operate the store... seems like common business knowledge to me.. but whatev I am scheduling another appointment for Mike soon and I hope he gets the same cute teddy bear look again! We live right above Furry Tales so it is tough not to get dragged in to buy new toys every week. Captain loves checking out the latest bottle of O'Drools or Kennel One. Julia is great and always gives Captain a treat. Furry Tales is a boutique and a bit on the small side so you're not going to find everything here but they manage to pack a lot of fun into a small space. If you want a cheaper, larger, less exciting selection go to PetCo. If you want fun treats, clothes, and toys for you dog this is the place. read more

I love this pet shop more and more as I visit it for different things. Got the dogs washed and nails clipped -- gorgeous pups! Bought them some treats -- devoured! Bought dry food -- good price and excellent quality! My husband mentioned our collie/corgi mix is shedding, and the owner brought out some of her brushes to demonstrate what could do what, and ordered one for us! It's just so nice to have a neighborhood pet shop to ask questions and get great products. read more
