Lola Belle after her grooming appointment with The Dog Groomer

After trying several dog groomers in San Francisco we found The Dog Barber. I couldn't believe what a fantastic job they did on Lola Belle my mini Cavapoo. She has never looked better, I was amazed as well as my friends.. Robert the owner & groomer was so nice & communicated with me through our 1st groom appointment to make sure we were on the same page. I am so grateful we have finally found an awesome dog groomer

We love Roberto and his team! Communication with Roberto is very easy via text and he always gets back to me the same day with availability. They're consistent, and follow the inspo photos I show them of how I want my dog's hair cut. My dog is usually there for about 3 hours and always comes back smelling clean!

Took our litte guy Odie here for the first time. It's a busy small business, but they do a great job communicating and updating as needed. For example, Odies fur was a bit matted and would require more additional time to fix. They called and let us know, and that it would cost a bit more before completing. Totally fine bc look how cute he came out !

Went to the dog barber for the first time. Booked appointment via email. The owner responded a couple days later and we finalized on estimate cost, appointment detail. The location is convenient with ok street parking. Dropped off my pup and owner asked for some instructions. 4 hours later, a text came to let me know my pup will be ready. I tried to call after 3 hours to see if ready to pick up as i thought that was the original estimate but no one picked up. Wish the communication was a bit more but given this is a small business, all were probably busy with multiple pups and prioritized them. So that's understandable. I like his summer cut. Will plan to return.

After trying a few different SF dog grooming options, we found The Dog Barber. My dog Roux has a long coat that is prone to tangles so we visit for a bath every two weeks. When you walk in, you can see the dogs getting groomed as everything is out in the open. The owner, Roberto is so nice and accommodating. Roux always leaves looking great. Highly recommend.

This has been our go to place ever since we moved to the city. We have been to two other places when we forgot to book (yes reserve a spot early, there's a reason other places are easier to book). These days it seems like dog grooming is pricey wherever you go. It has gone up slightly here as well - $95 (+$5 if matted) for our small 8 pound cockapoo. But worth it. Communication with Roberto is always super easy via text and when we pick up our little one, she always looks perky and happy!

Wonderful cuts! Although very cute when fluffy, it comes a point every 2-3 months when a professional haircut is a must for our little puppy. We tried taking him to a few other places and had mixed results. Usually a few weeks after the cut when his her would grew some, we could see how uneven the cut was. Then we were told about The Dog Barber! Roberto and the crew are great. We have been going therefor a couple of years now and have been happy every time! If you are looking for a dog barber, I highly recommend The Dog Barber! Just make sure to call in advance as their calendar gets filled very quickly.

My sweet little 6.5 lb Pomeranian turns into a monster when she gets groomed. In the past I've been called 3 different times by groomers to come get her because she was too much for them. The last groomer that was able to handle her always charged me a naughty puppy fee. The dog barber not only didn't charge me a naughty puppy fee, they did an amazing job and even told me that she did really well . They took 2 1/2 hours from start to finish. I'm So happy to have found a good reliable groomer close by. Highly recommend. read more

Came in for a nail trim for my 15yo dog and they did absolutely amazing. I have been going to petco in the past and I'm upset I didn't know about the Dog Barber sooner! It took less than 10 min, my dog was calm, and his nails were the shortest they have ever been (without causing any bleeding). Great price as well. Would definitely recommend. read more

We had been going to another grooming place for over a decade. That establishment started to go downhill. So we asked around for a new recommendation and one of our friends told us that she takes her dog to The Dog Barber. We decided to give it a try. We were able to get an appointment pretty quick (they rely mostly on email and text for appointments). It's pretty easy to park in front. They took our pup back promptly and said it would be a few hours. It took them about an hour or two before he was ready. Our pup is 15 so we were nervous how he would do with a new groomer. But he did great! He came back happy, smelled great, and his nails were trimmed perfectly. They deshedded him as well. And they actually charge about $10 less than the other place we were going to. I wish we found Dog Barber sooner! Our pup seems to like it better than the old place. Goes in no problem and comes out happy. Good sign! Also he smells great for almost a month after grooming. Dog Barber is now our go to place! read more

Great place! Easy to make an appt & they did a wonderful job. My pug is so soft & clean. She hates getting her nails trimmed and most places don't do the job right - but her nails have never looked better after her appt! I'll def be back, really happy to have found this place. read more

The Dog Barber/Roberto is an excellent groomer, consistently giving Maisie the cutest cuts of any groomer she's seen in SF. And he's also the kindest, gentlest, most dog-focused groomer imaginable, way above & beyond! I saw him in action yesterday with a nervous pup, and he was amazing. What can I say about this place? I love it! I've been coming here for the past 5 years and they are the absolute best. I've tried out a few spots as well as various mobile services and nobody gives a cut quite like these guys. Great service, friendly staff, and always very accommodating. The location is easy enough for me to get to and if you are dropping off early enough, parking is not an issue either. There usually are a few spots open on the street right in front which makes drop off and pick up a breeze. The place itself is a small hole in the wall, but they keep it clean and orderly. I love seeing all of the other dogs getting really great cuts here as well. The prices are reasonable considering the quality of the work. If you don't mind spending a little more to have your pup looks it's best, then this is the spot for you. I highly recommend The Dog Barber in SF. read more

During the COVID-19 crisis, The Dog Barber will accept grooming appointments if you have a vet's note. Email from vet is acceptable. + Both of my dogs got dropped at the barber and I got a text when they were ready for pick up. + Email or text is preferred communication. + Various forms of electronic payment are accepted (Venmo, PayPal, Zelle, ApplePay) but I used Venmo Try to get the recipient username in advance to avoid confusion. + Rate is $85 for small dogs. + Quality cuts. Today was my dog Archie's first hair cut ever and both my partner and I were worried he would come out looking weird. I cannot be happier with the result!!!! The dog barber staff was extremely friendly and made me feel at ease when I dropped off my baby. I am a new dog mom so off course I over worry. The gentleman at the front assured me Archie would be ok and he asked me what kind of cut I wanted in detail. Archie looks amazing at pick up and the cut is absolutely perfect!!!! Great place to take your pup for grooming. Leo has been getting his grooming from the Dog Barber for many years now. Always happy to go and comes home looking beautiful. The BEST! We recently adopted a 13 yo pooch whose beloved companion was too ill to care for her. She desperately needed grooming. We took her to a very popular groomer in Castro District and she was returned to us injured, limping. She healed but we have now found the Dog Barber on Market and what a difference! My little Shihtzu Gizmo goes here every month diligently for his best looking haircut for years now. Roberto not only does a great job on the cute style also he makes sure the well groomed sanitary area maintains nice and clean for a long time. Recently they helped to discover and removed a tick latching on Gizmo. So we could take Gizmo to vet before serious infections. We really appreciate it. read more

When I adopted my senior dog Elsa, I took her to PetSmart to be groomed for the first time. My dog is very anxious at baseline and unfortunately, they ended up cutting her ear because she wiggles too much/doesn't like to be touched near her face. We were very traumatized and I was hesitant to bring her to another groomer. Luckily, I found the Dog Barber. I told Roberto and his staff about Elsa's anxiety and the patience required to groom her. I've never had a problem and every time I get her from the Dog Barber, Elsa looks and smells great! I've been taking Elsa here for two years now and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The Dog Barber did an amazing job on my little poodle! This place is amazing for dogs with more complex and hard to manage hair/fur such as poodles, they'll comb it all through and have your dog leaving all spazzed up ! Had an amazing experience, drop off and pick up was simple. Price was fair and reasonable for the professionalism and quality of the groom. Definitely will be going to the Dog Barber for my dog's future grooming. read more

Absolutely amazing! I am just blown away at how well our dog was groomed even down his furry toes that always need a good trim. They really pay attention to small details. We have been looking for a good groomer for our pup and bounced around a couple other places in the neighborhood that end up being too pricey and a mediocre haircut at best anywhere else. Roberto was very quick to respond when I requested about an appt and I really appreciate the flexibility when we were able to take a cancellation appt the next day. Customer service is top notch! Our maltipoo in particular had very difficult grooming experiences prior to Dennise. Dennise is dedicated to serving every dog she grooms regardless of age and temperament. We can attest that she built a strong relationship with our maltipoo that has helped her feel more at ease being groomed (a true feat). Dennise also is the only groomer we have trusted with our bernedoodle puppy which has clearly paid off: our puppy seems to truly enjoy hanging out with all the groomers and other pups when she is in the shop. Dennise is clearly passionate about her work and it is an added bonus that she gives her clients excellent hair cuts. Shout out also to Brian for all of his hard work behind the scenes keeping the business side streamlined. He is kind, friendly, and makes scheduling appointments easy for us which is greatly appreciated. We look forward to continuing to work with Dennise and Brian for many years to come. He was patient with her, sent a reassuring message and took his time with her haircut. I sent a photo of the haircut I wanted for Maggie and Gustavo gave her one of the best haircuts she's had. When he dropped her off he told me that she did well during the groom and Maggie even said goodbye to him which is a sign of a good relationship between them. A nice touch was the grooming report I received at the end with a cute photo. My long time search for a groomer has ended and I'll be booking with Gustavo from now on!

They were careless with the lives of YOUR animals. Two dogs without collars or leashes ran out onto the sidewalk behind her and luckily followed her to the other side of the store. They could have just as easily run into the street without collars and been killed! I yelled out about the gate and the lady DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE DOGS WERE FOLLOWING HER. Then she carried one dog back to the other side and the other dog, again without a collar or leash just walked back onto the sidewalk and back to the other side again. They were lucky these two dogs were so well behaved but no matter how well behaved a dog is, they should ALWAYS be on leash when out on the sidewalk. Fortunately all the dogs are safe, but seeing this carelessness I would NEVER BRING MY DOG BACK HERE. If they are that careless with other peoples beloved animals they shouldn't even have a business. Do not trust them to protect your animal while in their care. ** edit in response to owner below: Well it seems other commenters have seen the same, including with their own dogs being off leash outside. So I highly doubt what you're saying is true. Either way, never bringing my dog here again and I'm going to continue to tell others the same. Lastly, if you let shops dogs outside off leash then you are still an irresponsible dog owner. Leashes are required by law for a reason. If you don't care enough about your own dogs to leash them outside, I don trust you with my dogs. You should be fined and your dogs taken before they are harmed.

I love birds so much and I know the folks who work here do to! I talked to some of them when I…read morevisited this store. But sometimes we love animals in a way that supports their exploitation and harms them. The issue is that this store is misguidedly treating these sentient beings like merchandise by buying them from breeders (possibly even breeding mills, they would not tell me where they get birds from) then selling them to make money. Birds, and no animal, should be bought/sold for profit and in doing so we are commodifying them and contributing to the existing crisis of birds who are already in need of homes. If people stop buying/selling birds, people would instead adopt them from rescues and shelters and alleviate the stress and burden on rescuers while getting animals who actually need homes in to homes, instead of breeding more and more in to existence. Additionally, many birds suffer immensely in captivity and rip our their own feathers out of distress (a behavior that does not happen in the wild) these animals are not domesticated, are highly social and should be living in huge flocks and flying free in their natural habitats. I really hope someday this store will do the right thing and prioritize what is in the best interest of the animals by ceasing to buy birds from exploitative breeders and selling them like merchandise for profit, and instead host adoption events with local bird rescues as there are thousands of birds who desperately need forever homes. I love pet stores and I shop at them all the time as I have 20+ rescued animals I need supplies for. The vast majority of pet stores in SF thrive without selling animals, and I know the Animal Company can too! :) The folks at the Animal Company are nice people and my concerns are not a personal attack on them.

If they haven't had the item I'm seeking, they make helpful suggestions. Longer: I have an extremely picky cat and there have been times over the years I've forgotten to order her special food or the delivery is delayed, so then I go hunting through the City. Plus, I love animals and stopping in a mom and pop pet shop "just to see what there is" happens frequently xD Unfortunately, the Animal Company hasn't carried what I needed in the past, as the cat and dog food selection is fairly limited (yet varied) given the hundreds of varieties of foods nowadays. I digress... just last weekend my kitty's special kidney food was delayed in transit and the lil chonker ate through her last order in record time. Kitty has gotten accustomed to a mix of kidney+core wellness and she let us know allllllll night Friday into Saturday that her food was not right. After two nights in a row of poor sleep, I was determined to find (Weruva) Wx Low Phos tilapia+tuna somewhere in the City. PFE website says they have it, but no stores have in stock (thank goddess I called before trekking). Called a few of the smaller shops around town with no luck. As options were dwindling, I gave The Animal Company a call and imagine my surprise when a cheery voice on the other end of the phone confirmed they did indeed have what I was looking for! It was 4th of July and the person on the phone informed me they were closing early, around 3pm, and put 4 cans of food aside for me. I immediately hopped off the couch and we got on our way to the J. Within an hour I had kidney friendly food plus some kidney friendly treats (!! Wx Low Phos new product) in hand, a full belly (stopped at Subs Inc. across the street), and we were on our way back home. Note: yes, about half+ the store is dedicated to birbs. I'm glad I took some time to read reviews+Rick's responses here on Yelp, 'cause admittedly it made me a lil sad to see some of the birbs in the store, I realize now I subconsciously avoided it. Turns out, many of the birbs in store are being boarded (and very! well cared for). Totally understandable some may look sad given they're in a new environment and very likely missing their humans. I know my kitty would be absolutely out of sorts if taken out of home while I was away (and sure, birbs are different than cats, but these birbs are VERY smart). I've been following a woman on YT, I think a random covid SiP stumble, who has educated me on these magnificent, fascinating creatures (birbs). Thalia is truly incredible, and having that continuity of care has meant everything to us. Elsa genuinely loves going to daycare--she pulls me to the door at drop-off and can't wait to get inside. She's made best friends there that she clearly adores, which is such a joy to see. We receive detailed updates and photos, so we always know how her day went. What really sets Expert Pet apart is how much they go above and beyond. From fun activities to adorable holiday photo shoots, it's clear how much care and effort they put into each dog. We also love that it's a small, neighborhood daycare rather than a kennel-style facility with dozens of dogs. The personalized attention, thoughtfully matched play groups, and access to both indoor and outdoor space make a huge difference. I've been taking Roxy and Louie to Roberto for over a year now and he does a great job! Reasonable for San Francisco grooming prices and takes about 3 hours when I had one dog, and 4 hours now that I take both at the same time. read more
