    Soft shell crab poke

For an establishment inside a mall, sushi rolls were tasty (think we got lucky they were rolled pretty recently) and the poke bowls were made to order. Ingredients were fresh and everything was tasty. Presentation and packaging of the food were all exceptional.

    Assortment of maki

This is an interesting concept with decent execution. Basically, they sell oversized maki by the piece, rather than the roll. (They also do poke but I haven't tried it yet.) I got 5 or 6 pieces, which filled me up and cost about $17, which seemed just a bit on the pricy side but not insane. Sushi was generally pretty good, although it could have tasted a bit fresher. I also would have appreciated more detailed descriptions on the menu. I did not care at all for one piece. I don't know if that's because I didn't like the ingredients or the execution. I'd go back here and probably will.

First of all - don't even contemplate coming here without a reservation. It's insanely popular and…read moreI can see why. We had dinner reservations for 7:45 but got there two hours early because we really wanted to try out their happy hour. Huge selection of food for happy hour and delicious drinks. We waited an hour but were sat and immediately cancelled our dinner reservations because we knew it was about to go down. Fair warning - if you're approaching 40 like us, it's dark, it's loud, and you're sitting on top of people. It will be worth it. We had the double knot roll, spicy tuna roll, BAO, and some drinks. All 10/10. But the real star is the grilled meats. Specifically the scallion ribeye. We tried to take pictures of all of it but it was literally too dark in the restaurant. I would go back and just order ribeye skewers for the entire happy hour. They don't take happy hour reservations but get there early. It's the best.

It feels like a converted cellar lit with candles, very vibey and romantic. Only thing I would say is it's pretty dark so if you have bad eyes it makes it hard to keep reading the menu to make your selections, so preview it off you know you are doing the tasting menu. The food was really good, and everything was presented well. The service was outstanding, the staff was attentive professional, and very patient. Stand out dish was grilled scallops. My table loved the fried rice. Enjoy your meal!!

They have really great options to choose from on Happy Hour and their regular menu! The Bao Buns & Steamed Dumplings did not disappoint! I was full after those two options but the HH menu had plenty to choose from. Fresh sushi is also prepared as you walk in! Beautiful dim lighting right at the entrance. That was my first time having that beer, not bad. I switched over to a special cocktail made my the bartender; great customer service! The host was also incredible with his greeting and recommendations. The place is clean, spacious and cozy. I say the bar, much space and many TVs. Check it out!

All of them were tasty and filling, and for happy hour, decently priced. It's a good place to try and to meet up with friends. DRINKS We had their yuzu paloma and one of their specialty cocktails. Both were good but VERY strong, so if you're looking for something sweeter or something that doesn't pack too strong of a punch, then they might not be for you. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly. AMBIANCE It's a great place to catch up with friends over some finger foods and drinks. Located at the heart of Center City, it's also nearby a variety of other establishments if you want to hop around. PARKING Paid street parking is available at a limited capacity. We were sat right by the kitchen, which was cool as we got to see their assembly line. (Deff reserve in advance and dont be more than 15 mins late for ur rezzy!) We tried the tuna rice crackers (one of my faves), cheesesteak bao, edamame dumplings, wagyu beef, kung pao chicken wing, NY strip steak, crispy walnut shrimp, kimchi fried rice, it was a ton of food. Deff filling. Service was great and all the food was incredible. Highly recommend. Great spot for a special occasion. Pro tip: Parking is tough in this area of the city so give yourself ample time to find.

Let me tell y'all something…read more.. I came to Sampan tonight as a party of one, and apparently being alone is the restaurant equivalent of showing up to a cookout without bringing a side dish. Now before I start, let me say this: I'm a huge fan of the owner. Matter of fact, I used to work for him part-time years ago. So writing this review feels like having to tell your favorite aunt that her potato salad got raisins in it. Nobody wants to do it, but the truth is the truth. The night started with them seating me at the prep station bar in the corner. Cool. No problem. I like my peace. I like my solitude. I like pretending I'm a food critic with important opinions. What I don't like is sitting there so long waiting for service that I started considering applying for a job. Nobody greeted me. Nobody checked on me. Nobody even looked concerned that I was aging in real time. When someone finally came over, my place setting wasn't complete. No napkin. No proper setup. Just vibes and uncertainty. I decided to do the chef's tasting because I wanted the full experience. Big mistake. That tasting menu moved faster than a church announcement after the pastor says, "We're running out of time." My server never asked if I'd been there before. Never explained anything. Never guided me through the menu. He was talking so fast I felt like I was taking the SATs. The ceviche was okay. Not bad. Not great. It was there. The cheesesteak bao had less flavor than the hold music at PECO. And here's where things got ridiculous. The bao was greasy enough to lubricate a transmission, and I realized I didn't even have a napkin. Now I'm sitting there looking like I just changed the oil in my car. So I had to flag down the host and ask for a napkin. At this point, I'm wondering if I'm on a hidden-camera show. The rest of the tasting menu showed up one plate at a time, and honestly, most of it was so forgettable I can't remember if I ate it or imagined it. But then... Like an angel descending from heaven... That bronzino arrived. Baby. Listen. That bronzino and those string beans saved the entire evening. That fish walked in like Martin rescuing Gina from another bad decision. Perfectly cooked. Flavorful. Beautiful. For a brief moment, I thought Sampan had turned this thing around. The pork chop was pretty good too. Then the kimchi fried rice came out and said, "Not so fast." Now I've had this dish before, and I know what it's supposed to taste like. Tonight? Absolutely not. I took one bite and immediately started looking around for the version I ordered. It was so disappointing I sent it back. And when dessert time came, I was emotionally unavailable. I declined. Respectfully. I was done. Look, maybe they had an off night. Maybe the staff was overwhelmed. Maybe dining solo just isn't their thing. I don't know. What I do know is that one heroic bronzino shouldn't have to carry an entire restaurant on its back like LeBron in Cleveland. The fish did everything it could. It fought hard. It deserved better teammates. Unfortunately, one MVP performance couldn't save the game. For me, this is probably my last visit.
