Came in from out of town for the holidays and wanted to continue training in BJJ while I was home…read more I went here with 2 of my friends who had never done BJJ who wanted to try it out. The facility is very spacious. There's a main training area and then another smaller room with mats and workout equipment for other classes or free rolling. The place is also extremely clean and the vibe is great. If you've been to a martial arts academy with a bad vibe you will know what I mean, but this place is nothing but positive. The woman at the front desk was very helpful and got us situated with a 10 day trial and my friends with rental gi's. We were then greeted by the head coach John Ingallina who is the embodiment of a professional. He is extremely welcoming, kind, professional, and explained the whole Gracie Combatives system to us. During class he was great at explaining the techniques being taught, and made good work of going to each person and ensuring they did it right. As an out of towner I was completely welcomed by the staff and other class members. I 100% would recommend this, and have done so to my 2 friends who I am very close to.

The team/instructors do a thorough job to ensure that even first timers starting out their jiu jitsu journey are welcomed with open arms. At the end of my first class everyone made sure to introduce themselves and ask what got me interested to sign up. I highly recommend for those looking for their next physical and mental feat!

Martial Arts isn't about violence, power, and control over others. Rather, it is about using violence as a very last response, having the Personal Power to better ourselves and learning how to control our body and our mind! I have been affiliated with SMAA for nearly 20 years and I can attest first hand that I have witnessed the highest levels of courtesy, respect for others and a sincere interest in their students, clients and visitors rare in our society today. Regardless of the day, each and every time I enter the doors at Syracuse Martial Arts, I am greeted with smiles and warmth. The program at SMAA reflects this demeanor at the highest level as well. I have taught well over 20 Workshops at the school and the skills, attitude and energy is always consistently solid! For anyone that may say negative things about SMAA, I can only shake my head and think of what my teacher, the Top Student Of Bruce Lee and the Leading Authority on Martial Arts in the World today once said to me..."They only tackle the MAN with the ball. If you weren't worthy of criticism or threatening, you would be ignored."

We were visiting Syracuse for one week, and my husband--a seasoned black belt in two different karate styles--called ahead simply to ask if he could attend a few drop-in classes during our stay. His goal wasn't to "shop around" for a new school. Like many dedicated martial artists, he wanted to continue his training while traveling, train respectfully, and perhaps learn something new from another instructor. The owner's response was shocking. He told us that it would not be okay because he was only interested in committed students and that someone coming in for a week would just be "fooling around" in class and taking time away from his regular students. He said it wasn't something he wanted to get involved with. That response goes against everything we believe the martial arts are supposed to represent. Respect, humility, camaraderie, and the willingness to share knowledge with fellow martial artists are foundational values within the martial arts. Experienced practitioners visiting other dojos has long been a respected tradition when done with courtesy and permission. Instead of welcoming a fellow black belt who reached out respectfully beforehand, my husband was treated as though he would be a burden. If this is how prospective visitors and fellow martial artists are treated, it's worth considering what kind of culture exists within this dojo. A dojo should be a place where respect is freely given to those who show it. Unfortunately, we found the attitude to be exclusionary, dismissive, and contrary to the spirit of martial arts. We left with the impression that this dojo values exclusivity over community. If you're looking for an instructor who embodies the traditional values of honor, respect, and mutual learning, our experience suggests you may want to look elsewhere.
