While maintaining a focus on physical activity and skill in taekwondo, the focus on values including respect, responsibility, and perseverance go far beyond just what is written on their walls. The staff work with the parents and families as a team to reinforce positive behavior and good character not just within their facility, but also at school and at home. There is a constant narrative of commitment to self improvement and to invest into helping to better our surrounding community as well. One of our children has had some trying behavior and over the past two years the staff has poured their effort into support and structure to help us guide him the right way. It is VERY good for younger kids. I have a lot in my class but that's ok, everyone has to start somewhere! While I will switch to another gym in the future, Northern Hemisphere is awesome for people, especially older kids improve on basic skills. However, I have seen coach Paul yell at several kid. There was a girl who was a red head, and lost her balance on a mat after landing, and was struggling to get up, when he yelled at her " Hey, red headed kid! Get off the mat!." I could not believe this. My experience has been good, but I would not recommend.

The instructors at Matsunami are direct students of Lyoto and Chinzo Machida, who themselves are Shotokan teachers and pro MMA fighters. At Matsunami karate you can expect to get the best of both worlds in martial arts training with Machida Karate. The Machida Karate program is a fun and challenging karate class that also teaches MMA style drilling, conditioning and some ground fighting. The atmosphere is relaxed but focused and the classes are challenging. I've been training it for 3 years now and can't recommend it enough. Try a class.
