My roots didn't get fully colored; i did address this prior to the start of my service. I explicitly pointed out to how stubborn my grays are, how I wish to have a shiny smooth color no overlap or "zebra" stripes. I was assured it would not be the case. I wound up with exactly that. I'm so irritated by how my hair turned out that even if I were to be paid to come back I would not.

I reached out to a number of artists - many didn't respond and of those that did - some were abrasive and pushy or wanted to charge an arm and a leg for coming early. From the jump, Tony was courteous, attentive, and flexible. He really listened to what I wanted, thought about it, and executed. And even though I changed my palette a bit a few days before the wedding, he was totally flexible. He did a test run with me before the wedding and it was no big deal for him to show up at my place at 5 am (I needed to leave for City Hall at 7:45 am). I covered his cabs to and from my home and he even provided me with lip gloss to refresh my lips throughout the day. In addition, Tony's rates were incredibly reasonable and well worth the cost! Truly amazing. I've seen her for over 10 years. So my cut was perfect as always. I have curly hair and I prefer to style it more wavy. The real challenge was getting gray and silver highlights. I haven't had my hair colored in ages - I'm loving how easy it is to embrace my silver and gray hair. I wanted to celebrate my silver and grays coming in with gray highlights that were not chunky, not a whole curl (like Storm). More like a natural swirling of gray highlights wrapping around my curls. It looks so good, so flirty and arty, fresh but also natural. AND MY CURLS WERE NOT DAMAGED! I don't think there is another stylist or salon with this expertise to not damage the curl pattern with such an intense bleaching process! The owner Robert was also assisting and guiding the process. The sinks are also the most comfortable I've experienced at a salon. The salon is near Times Square, so it's great for if you are sightseeing and need perfect curly hair love.

I stumbled upon Jay's work just like any other yelp reviewer. Comparing him to others and doing my research like crazy. I have had virgin hair up until last year and like most, I get extremely scared and anxious when it comes to dying my hair. The first time I decided to change my hair color I had asked the hairstylist (another place) if I could get a full balayage. For some reason she only gave me a partial one which ended up in semi-disappointment. I didn't grow to love my hair or get compliments until 5-6 months later... Upon meeting Jay I had showed him three different pictures and told him anything in between is fine, just as long as the colors aren't too crazy and my hair remains long. He was very attentive to details and walked me through everything he did. Throughout the bleaching/hair dye process I did get a bit nervous, just bc the color got extremely platinum blonde and he started laughing. Probably bc he saw how anxious I was getting and the worry on my face. In the end I got a caramel to ashburn to blonde/silverish color and I am immensely satisfied with the result. I paid $160 for haircut and color (excluding tip) and compared to other salons that charge you $300+ that's a freaking steal! My only issue (if you even want to call it that) was that he took in 4-5 other clients while dealing with me so it pushed back my time a bit, but that's understandable since I was going to be there for awhile anyways. I would 100% recommend Jay to all my friends and future yelpers who are reading this right now. Trust the process!!

I also felt pressured into paying for additional services that I didn't feel were necessary. The stylist cut far more hair than I asked for. He seemed overly eager to use scissors rather than preserving my length, and I left with much shorter hair than I wanted. I paid $232 and left extremely disappointed. Based on my experience, I don't believe the stylist was experienced with Black hair textures. If you're African American and looking for someone with expertise in caring for natural or textured hair, I would not recommend this salon
