I have kept her on her toes as I often want to switch up my color treatment and every time she is a good listener, careful and intuitive with my vision...and she's also very good with time management. Chris is the best!!! My review is so delayed as I have been going to Chris since 2016 and I have always walked out of the salon with a bright smile and wonderful hair. Whether it's a total change of hairstyle, or just a trim, always 100% satisfaction. I have long, wavy, thin and frizzy Asian hair which is rare and not the easiest to manage, Chris always gives me good tips on how to style them too. He's observant and great in listening to your needs or wants. He might not be the most talkative hair stylist, he's laser focused while he's cutting your hair. but this is more than perfect to have a silent haircut for an introvert like me. My hair was getting long and falling flat and shapeless. I booked online with Amanda and got a really great cut even though I didn't really know exactly what I wanted just the elements like the length and layers and general shape. I loved that we went through my typical styling and hair routine because even after the salon styling, the next day the cut looks great for my quick home blow dry and brush. Even the next day after waking up my hair falls nicely. Amanda also has really great energy and made me feel pretty comfortable since I'm usually a bit nervous trying new salons. Before my last visit I would have given a five star review, but unfortunately, after my last visit this isn't the case anymore, and to make a long story short, just because I don't get any sort of fancy hair treatments (wash and layer cut my long hair only) and I don't dress fancy enough, they not only under serviced and over charged me, but they also mocked me on site, to make sure I woudn't come back. Long story: After my hair was washed, I noticed she hadn't offered a hand massage like the previous times and rushed me to my chair. After exchanging a few words, suddenly two other customers begin laughing out loud along with a couple of employees, and as they were doing it, my hairdresser flipped my chair around (like she never had done before) so I could stare straight into the laughter which immediately stopped (and one of the employees left) leaving me with nothing but an assumption that it was about me, which as you can imagine is pretty awful sensation to feel when you are an introvert with many psychological issues because of bullying. Despite not using or buying any fancy products this time around, not only I was charged slightly more than usual but after coming home I realized my hair hadn't been cut properly. My lesson was learned. While I believe establishments have the right to choose what kind of service they provide to their customers, I have to say that unless you plan to destroy your hair with treatment after treatment and unless you dress like you're going to a cocktail party every day, I don't recommend this place at all. read more

This is a long overdo review. I'm reminded to finally write this because I'm looking at hairstyles for my hair appointment later today. What I haven't mentioned is that I live in Washington, D.C., and I am still returning to Chris! Chris has been my "hair guy" for over a decade, since I first moved to SF for graduate school. His salon was down the street from my house - It was called 10th Ave Salon then. I chose him because he was inexpensive ($20 at the time), and I didn't need anything fancy. I have straight black hair, so it's often just a trim or adding some layers. Why I stayed with him until the day I left SF, and even now when I return to visit, is because he does an amazing job. I usually arrive to my appointments with an idea of how I want my hair cut, sometimes with photographs as well. Chris will gently remind me that many hairstyles don't look quite the same on black hair (boo!) - like how a wispy short do will not look nice on my thick straight hair. I've really learned to appreciate his opinion, and that's what they are. He never dictates my style. He's yet to fail me. In addition, Chris cut my hair twice now for donations to Locks of Love. I've loved my short dos after both haircuts. Over the past 11 or 12 years, his prices have gone up quite a bit (not unreasonably so with inflation) and his salon is a bit trendier, but what matters is the haircuts still maintain the same quality. I'm sad to be across the country now, where I've yet to find a new "hair guy", but I will continue to stop here for a cut or trip whenever I'm in town. read more

Amanda is great at her craft. I am a balding guy with most of my hair on the sides and back and it takes a lot of skill to shape and layer what I have left. When I found Amanda and had my first cut with her, I was so happy and will be a customer for life. I've been going to Chris for probably close to 10 years. Truth be told, I've "flirted" with other stylists during that period (10 years is a long time to be "monogamous" right?), but no one has come close to cutting my hair as well as Chris. More recently, I moved to Marin and tried to locate someone a bit more geographically convenient, but even people up here who have great reputations didn't cut my hair nearly as well as Chris. And so, I make the drive across the Golden Gate to get my hair cut by Chris. I also went to his new location (now known as g salon and formerly known as 10th Ave Salon and before that, Trendy Cut),and it's gorgeous! It definitely makes his previous location look like a real pit! His new place has beautiful white chairs that would be right at home in a very hip salon in South Beach (Florida, that is...) or a common area in the SF St. Regis--it's very modern and sleek. It is dramatically different from before and a significant upgrade. Chris is a great stylist, he's efficient, and he's really nice. I could not recommend him more highly. I sometimes wonder why his schedule's not more full, and I think that's a function of how humble and low-key he is as the quality of his haircuts are fantastic. read more

Chris is the only person I trust with my hair. I refuse to let anyone else cut my hair. I started going to Chris when he was at 10th Avenue Salon and continue to see him now that he is at G Salon (just around the corner from the previous location!) Chris will NEVER... -Give you 1cm bangs -Give you a mullet -Give you crooked layers -Most importantly, Chris will never make you leave the salon in tears (The above are all things OTHER salons did to me without fail) Chris will ALWAYS... -Make sure he thoroughly understands what you want before putting those scissors anywhere near your hair. When I come in and say noncommittally, "Yes please cut off an inch", he won't make a cut until he shows me his definition of "an inch" with his fingers and has me confirm. -Make sure he's giving you a haircut that will actually look good on you. When I kept coming in for bang trims he eventually suggested that I should grow my bangs out and gave me some tips. That being said, when I actually had bangs he was the only person who knew that "Please trim my bangs" meant "Please make my bangs look GOOD" (unlike other salons who heard, "Please make me look as bad as possible") -Make you walk out of the salon with bouncy, voluminous, blowdried look-at-me hair If I ever move out of the Sunset I'm still coming back to get my hair cut here. Never risking getting my hair cut at the mall ever again, not when Chris is around :) read more

I had my haircut in this salon a while ago and I wasn't motivated to write a review until recently when I'm planning for my next haircut. Amanda was the one who cut my hair. I chose her because she has good reviews about her cutting skills. Except she wasn't able to (or not willing to?) cut my hair to the one I shown her in a photo (nothing fancy, just shoulder length with bangs), I honestly liked my hair style after the cut, and this is the only reason I gave it two stars instead of lower. So my dissatisfaction with this experience has to do with what Amanda said to me during the cut, and it was as well overpricing. There was one instance during the cut, a cop's car passed by with the alarm on, and she said something like 'oh they're coming to catch you', in addition to feeling this was a very weird comment and not funny at all, it made me feel unwelcoming and being bullied out of the blue. I don't think she said that because she was trying to be funny and make me laugh. If there are so many good comments or reviews about this salon, or about Chris, I do think they should have some in-house courtesy training to make sure every stylists do the same and be reasonable to their customers. After all, they're working in the service industry. For the price, I understand this is San Francisco, everything is kind of expensive here. But it's really not the proper excuse for treating people disrespectfully or sloppily. Besides, I'm not a person who'll justify a more-than-$60 haircut (cut only) if I don't expect the service to be good or at least I feel being treated reasonably. read more

I then followed him when he opened his own place over at 10th Avenue Salon.
