I traveled all the way to the beach by public transportation (bart+bus). It was a pleasant and beyond expectations experience! It's totally worthy! I believe they are a couple and the husband is the one who will be cutting your hair. The front desk is the wife who is a super nice and kind lady. They first wash your hair for you and believe me it's the most relaxing time you will ever have! I almost fall asleep! He also has really good skill on designing and cutting hair. He's experienced and knows many styles and hair types, and always provides me nearly exactly what I hope for. I love the relaxing nature of the shampoo given as well as the politeness that he has and his spouse who helps him manage his bookings. I've been going to see Paul for over 10 years now. He gives the most amazing, relaxing shampoo / head massage (akin to the high end salon head massages in Asia). I go for haircuts but my sister swears by his hair coloring / color matching skills. Paul also uses the best hair care products (Goldwell, etc.). His prices are super reasonable (he really should be charging way more than he does). His wife Fay is so hospitable and prepares coffee, Jasmine tea, and nuts / cookies. Disregarded the photo I brought in and stole my hair. I say stole because after showing the pictures and using my hands to show I was looking for collar bone length they asked if I wanted to keep my hair after it was cut. This seemed hella weird to me and I said no, and immediately after this the first cut took off much more than I wanted, at which point I explained I didn't want it any shorter, and the dude proceeded to take another 3 inches off from there. The dryer was also very hot and my scalp feels irritated (I don't blow dry my hair normally). I feel traumatized from the experience. My prior hairdresser is awesome and I love her to bits, but my finances became too tight to see her, and so I tried Peter Pan Salon on the recommendation of a friend (and the reviewers here on Yelp). Paul started out by taking a look at my hair and listening intently to what I wanted. Then he led me to the shampoo sink, where he administered the the longest, most vigorous and luxurious shampoo/scalp massage I've ever had. Seriously, he could sell that separately as a spa treatment. I'd buy it. I got cold feet just as he prepared to start cutting. As soon as I saw the shears, from my lips spilled a torrent of concerns. I wasn't sure from his reaction that he'd understood me at all. He just smiled and said "don't worry." And then he went all Edward Scissorhands on me. To my ever-increasing anxiety, piles of hair were landing all around me. Piles. And I don't have that much to part with, people. When the dust settled, he whipped out a blowdryer and a small round brush, followed by a dry variation on his Scissorhands theme... and in a matter of 10 minutes, I had the most luscious, thick and healthy-looking hair I've had since I was 13. It's fashionable, it's soft, it's youthful but still age-appropriate for me, it's sexy, and it's even easier to style than it was before. Paul not only understood my weird hair texture, he used it to advantage. For the first time, someone actually *got* my hair!! And to top it all off, it was the cheapest haircut I've had in 15 years. Simply, this place is amazing! The side-service (cookies, tea, magazines, etc.) was incredible! They were very attentive and accomodating at 4:30 in the afternoon when everyone else is pooped and would rather sit on the couch watching Oprah, then have to worry about another needy customer. The color varieties Paul showed me were awesome and it was easy to find a match with his help of course. The shampoo and conditioning treatment with a massage bonus was one of the best I've received thus far. If my hair and scalp could talk, we would hear singing... Maybe something like "Hallelujah!" After the color, Paul got to cutting... With long hair and layers, it's difficult to mess anything up, and he didn't dissapoint me at all. I was looking for a simple trim and to fix the hair-cut my sister gave months ago, and he did more than that. He made my hair look amazing! I waited for a couple of weeks to post a review because I like to see how well my color lasts and how the cut works out in a variety of situations before passing judgement. I'm happy to say that I am completely satisfied with my cut/color. I should have taken before/after pictures because my hair needed help when I came in to Peter Pan. It was way too long and I had even dyed it myself a couple of times. Now it is shiny, healthy, and soft. It has great movement and it looks good whether I blow dry or just let it air dry. My grays are nowhere to be seen and he perfectly matched my color (it's a more ashy brown and not everyone picks up on that.) Both the gentleman that cut my hair and his assistant/receptionist were very sweet. They made good suggestions when we were working out the cut and the shampoo/head massage was unbelievable. I really liked his haircut, which made me more inclined to accept his suggestions. Great price, too. $115 for cut and color- and I have long, thick hair. Many salons charge more than that and don't do such a good job. I will be back to Peter Pan! read more

I've gotten two very different cuts (long and layered & short bob) and left perfectly satisfied both times, even with a drastic first-time bob cut. Months after both visits, I was/am still receiving compliments on my haircut. Paul is amazing at stylish haircuts while factoring in how it'll look once it grows out. 2. You can give him as little or as much guidance as you want and feel confident that he will give you honest feedback and give you a quality cut. In twenty some years, he is the only hair stylist I've come across who was able to successfully pull off a classy hairdo with only "i want a change...whatever you think will go with the shape of my face" to go off of. read more

I would have to agree with all of the other posters on here that mentioned how relaxing Paul's hair washes are. I've only had one other experience like this and it was only better because it was rougher...what can I say, I like it rough...jk Paul has amazing scissor skills. I have looked far and wide for someone who knows how to cut asian guy hair. I've been to my fair share of salons than charge way too much and I can honestly say Paul has probably gotten closest to how I want my hair. Other stylists don't get the concept that asian hair is coarser and too short = sticks straight out/up. I'll probably go back when I need a trim... too bad he's 40 minutes away!..ahhhh My only complaint would be communication, but it's not a barrier, just an awkward work around. read more

This hair salon does actually provide decent haircuts; the shape is still maintained really well. For me, I felt that there wasn't a problem with any type of language barrier because I could communicate with the stylist in cantonese. However, the stylist didn't listen to what I wanted done with my hair. From someone with hair that reached chest level to hair that was above the shoulders...that's a dramatic change. It was also something I didn't ask for. I asked for something an inch or two below the shoulders, but I definitely did not get that. Another thing with the stylist is that he doubles as the guy that washes your hair. People in the reviews I've read raved about how it was so relaxing and comfortable, but that's not what I felt. All I got was rough treatment. He didn't check whether or not the water was too hot for me to handle, and he also didn't care for how hair he was scratching your head from shampooing or if you could even handle massages to the head/neck area. Overall, I felt that it was really inconsiderate of him. I'll give him two stars, as the haircut I received did maintain a really good shape. I've been cutting my hair here since I was in graduate school, they are the most kind and loving people I've ever met~ Every time I just call them to make appointment and arrived there 5 mins earlier to find the street parking which is easy and sometimes they will even tell us where can we get the parking spot! how lovely! No need to mention the designer's 25 years professional skill, they treat every customers like their best friend. And they wont push you to do other extra "beauty salon" stuff like some other salons!! They always listen to what you want to do with your hair and give you their professional advise! the most important part I like is they give every customer one "FULL HOUR" service! the designer just Focus on you!!! that's a very respectful way to treat each of their customer! Cool dude with a cool bike.. I've had my hair blow dried here a couple times, and I liked what he did. He listens and tries to understand what you want, busts out pictures if thats what it will take. Due to the fullness of my hair, curls stay in place, at most, for a day before the weight of my hair pulls them down, elongating and straightening my hair. Even so, when the curls fell out, my hair looked smooth and behaved. He does a VERY thorough wash, which I really appreciate, good hair stylists understand the importance of working on clean hair. He did a hot oil treatment, which did make my hair look and feel a little softer. I would say the price is the best thing about him, good $30 blowdrys are hard to find. The hot oil treatment is $20. Maybe he and I will take the next step and I'll actually get a haircut from him (gasp!) Oh, and bring cash! (or write a check). If he says he doesn't have appointments available, gently press him until he finds a slot. I've been able to have him squeeze me in, without making another client wait. read more

I followed Paul ever since Yo-Yo's in the SF Richmond district. That was 2 or 3 years ago. Through out the years, I've been to a lot of salons. It's hard to find a good stylist... Paul is a GREAT stylist! Paul's scissors skills are the best! Top notch in every way! With the fancy French/Spanish music playing in the background, Paul performs artistic masterpieces while cutting my hair. Sometimes I get lost in the Parisians atmosphere which is the salon. Customer service is excellent. He always remembers my name and what we last talk about. Compared to other salons and their haircutting factory lines, Paul will take the time to find out what style will work for you, a great niche. You would have never guessed that there would be such an elegant, cozy, and upscale hair salon located so close to Ocean Beach. Tucked away in the outer Richmond district is probably the best kept secret in hair styling. Now I haven't let anyone other than one of my stylist/friend touch my hair in the last three years, but because she wasn't going to be able to cut my hair this week, I had no choice but to look elsewhere. As hesitant as I was, I found myself on Yelp scouring reviews to find a hair salon that best suited my needs. Being an Asian male, I wanted to find someone who was familiar with cutting my type of hair but at the same time, had a niche for style. I quickly found myself intrigued with this place when I first came across the reviews. The thing that caught my attention the most was the fact that this salon only had one stylist there. After going over some reviews and checking out there website, I called to make an appointment. Paul has brought over 30+ years hair styling experience from Asia over to San Francisco and I was not disappointed at all. I walked in and was instantly greeted by him and his wife. They were extremely warm and friendly. The salon had a very relaxed and intimate environment and I felt very comfortable the entire time I was there. Now since I haven't been to anyone else other than my friend for the past three years, I had to explain to Paul in detail of what I wanted. He understood exactly what I was telling him and was able to deliver a really clean and stylish cut (one that I haven't had before). I never felt rushed, which is definitely a plus when going to a new stylist. I think that $35 for a stylish cut is very reasonable and would definitely recommend him to any one of my friends.
