Photo stores should support photography and those interested pursuing it. This store has an unneeded unfriendly attitude. I'm not sure they even care about selling gear here, just interested in making the customer feel dumb. They do sell old cameras and gear, which most shops don't these days, so I have to give them one star for that. They have lots of random gear in this store. I hope this place closes down and a friendlier, more welcoming camera store takes its place. I had to buzz twice to be let in and from the second I stepped inside Gabe treated me like a piece of trash. I'm a photographer with a graduate degree in visual arts. I know my shit when it comes to cameras. Gabe asked, "What do you want?" and I responded that I was just looking around. "Well, that doesn't help me." He muttered at me. "Okay," I said, perplexed as to why a shop owner wouldn't want a customer to look at his products. "Do you have any large format cameras?" Gabe listed three large format cameras they had. I asked if I could see one of them and he said, "What's wrong with a high end 35mm?" He asked. Again, I was perplexed. I told him that's not what I wanted, and I already own 2 35's, and 2 medium formats. I asked again if I could see the Hasselblad. He told me I had to make an appointment to see it. Yeah, okay bud. "Like a doctor's appointment." He said. I'll make damn sure none of my other photographer friends or co-workers ever supports this place. The service was absolutely horrendous. read more

It's funny when people are negative about a business that's been around for 60+ years, ran by a man who clearly has owned it or worked there for a realllly long time and still chooses to keep the spot open no matter what. I'm happy that it's in the neighborhood. When i'm not working a ton, and can come here to grab film I do. The hours aren't ideal but shit, this spot is a relic. If you ever need to find anything obsolete, Gabe's is the place to go. I worked for Gabe for several years and learned a lot about photography, equipment, business and overall customer service. Yes, the store is probably still cluttered because there is so much to be found and yes, some of it probably belongs in a museum and yes, there may be some arrogance but he is knowledgable and helpful. This morning when I came into work we had a crisis and needed a pretty obscure accessory for a 3 year old camera. We called every camera place in bklyn ignoring Gabe's because of the one negative review we saw on Yelp. None of the places we contacted had the item in stock, many of the places were obvious bait and switch operations and said they will only check the stock if we come in. Finally at the end of our rope we figured we'd give Gabe's a try as an absolute last resort. We were shocked to quickly find out that not only did they have the item, but after tax it was $25.00, $10 less than all of the mail order stores we found with it. I quickly shot on over to Gabe's and the person who helped me out was fantastic. I was in and out in seconds and our day was able to start only two hours late. Without their help we would have all had to go home for the day until the item came in the next morning. read more

Gabe's is just an overpriced garage sale disguised as an actual store. It is full of overpriced photography relics that belong in a museum or a box buried in your basement. The customer service leaves much to be desired. You will be lied to about inventory in a sad attempt to actually get somebody to go inside, and the people there are just not friendly. If you want to be ripped off locally then Gabe's is the place for you, if not stay away. read more

quirky guy gabe helped me out yesterday at the cortelyou at twilight event - went in to have my camera "tuned up". gabe cleaned it up for me, and we exchanged some high spirited banter. i like his shop, filled with all kinds of old school camera / filmmaking supplies. you can definitely find some great one-of-a-kind treasures. you can also get your modern day necessities there too, and gabe has a wealth of information and opinions on electronics, new and old. i'm happy he's still in the neighborhood, what with all the gentrification and monopolies / conglomerates taking over our stretch of cortelyou road. he's got a great collection of telescopes too, for all you astronomy buffs. let's help keep this great shop in business - he's been here for years, and i hope he sticks around for many, many more xoxo read more

Went there to buy binoculars at last minute before a trip The pair sold to me were missing both lens caps and strap. The box looked decades old. Afterwards I looked on line and found that the price I was charged was DOUBLE the price online. I certainly feel ripped off. Buyer beware. read more

Unlike the ill contrived review issued by Christian V on 7/21/16 I had quite the opposite experience upon entering this establishment. Gabe was quite welcoming, informative and generous with the abundance of knowledge he possessed. It is not often that you come across a business owner as passionate about his or her craft.Within our conversation it was clear that financial gain was not his priority. I am able to express this in an unbiased capacity even though he is my uncle because I had not seen him in forty years. I had no contact as a r3esult of my own issue and failure to make contact and due to the absence my familiarity with his persona would be equal to one who had just met him. I was proud to see him with such enthusiasm for his trade after all these years and can only say I wish I had been in contact with him all along.
